Alkali Ion-Accelerated Gelation of MXene-Based Conductive Hydrogel for Flexible Sensing and Machine Learning-Assisted Recognition

Weidan Na,Chao Xu,Lei An,Changjin Ou,Fan Gao,Guoyin Zhu,Yizhou Zhang

Conductive hydrogels are promising active materials for wearable flexible electronics, yet it is still challenging to fabricate conductive hydrogels with good environmental stability and electrical properties. In this work, a conductive MXene/LiCl/poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) hydrogel system was successfully prepared with an impressive conductivity of 12.2 S/m. Interestingly, the synergistic effect of MXene and a lithium bond can significantly accelerate the polymerization process, forming the conductive hydrogel within 1 min. In addition, adding LiCl to the hydrogel not only significantly increases its water retention ability, but also enhances its conductivity, both of which are important for practical applications. The flexible strain sensors based on the as-prepared hydrogel have demonstrated excellent monitoring ability for human joint motion, pulse, and electromyographic signals. More importantly, based on machine learning image recognition technology, the handwritten letter recognition system displayed a high accuracy rate of 93.5%. This work demonstrates the excellent comprehensive performance of MXene-based hydrogels in health monitoring and image recognition and shows potential applications in human–machine interfaces and artificial intelligence.

Modulating the Coordination Environment of Lithium Bonds for High Performance Polymer Electrolyte Batteries

Zhilong Tian,Lei Hou,Doudou Feng,Yucong Jiao,Peiyi Wu

The new-generation lithium metal batteries require polymer electrolytes with high ionic conductivity and mechanical properties. However, the performance of the polymer electrolytes is severely influenced by the lithium bond formation between the functional groups and lithium ions (Li+), which has barely been considered in the past. Herein, a lithium bond enriched polymer gel (PAEV) is elaborately designed by copolymerizing 4-acryloylmorpholine (ACMO) and 1-vinyl-3-ethyl imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([VEIM][TFSI]) in 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([EMIM][TFSI]) with the presence of LiFSI. The lithium bonds formed between LiFSI and carbonyl groups in PACMO can be regulated by the Li+ coordination number, and further weakened by the hydrogen bonds with [EMIM][TFSI] and poly[VEIM][TFSI], to effectively render the polymer electrolyte with adjustable ionic conductivity and tunable mechanical property. In addition, with the regulated coordination environment of Li+, the LiF and Li3N layer can be uniformly formed on the Li surface to facilitate Li+ nucleation and deposition. As a consequence, the PAEV electrolyte confers the Li/LiFePO4 (LFP) battery with high capacity of 124 mA h g-1 at 1 C under 25 °C, and 152 mA h g-1 under 50 °C. This work can promote the development of high performance polymer electrolyte via lithium bond manipulation.

Synergetic Lithium and Hydrogen Bonds Endow Liquid-Free Photonic Ionic Elastomer with Mechanical Robustness and Electrical/Optical Dual-Output

Lei Peng,Lei Hou,Peiyi Wu

Photonic ionic elastomers (PIEs) capable of multiple signal outputs are intriguing in flexible interactive electronics. However, fabricating PIEs with simultaneous mechanical robustness, good ionic conductivity, and brilliant structure color still remains challenging. Here, the limitations are broken through introducing the synergistic effect of lithium and hydrogen bonds into an elastomer. In virtue of lithium bonding between lithium ions and carbonyl groups in the polymer matrix as well as hydrogen bonding between silanol on the surface of silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) and ether groups along polymer chains, the PIEs demonstrate mechanical strength up to 4.3 MPa and toughness up to 8.6 MJ m −3 . Meanwhile, the synchronous electrical and optical output under mechanical strains can be achieved in the PIEs with the presence of dissociated ions contributed by lithium bond and non-close-packed SiNPs stabilized by the hydrogen bond. Moreover, due to their liquid-free nature, the PIEs exhibit extraordinary stability and durability, which can withstand extreme conditions including both high and low temperatures as well as high humidity. This work provides a promising molecular engineering route to construct high-performance photonic ionic conductors toward advanced ionotronic applications.

Lithium Bond-Mediated Molecular Cascade Hydrogel for Injury-Free and Repositionable Adhesive Bioelectronic Interfaces

Lin Li,Bingsen Wang,Haotian Zhang,Jie Miao,Xisheng Sun,Nan He,Bo Jiang,Haonan Wang,Dawei Tang

Flexible bioelectronic interfaces with adhesive properties are essential for advancing modern medicine and human-machine interactions. However, achieving both stable adhesion and non-damaging detachment remains a significant challenge. In this study, a lithium bond-mediated molecular cascade hydrogel (LMCH) for bioelectronic interfaces is designed, which facilitates robust adhesion at the tissue level and permits atraumatic detachment for repositioning as required. By integrating the adhesive properties of the molecular cascade structure with the elastic characteristics of the hydrogel interface, the LMCH interface not only achieved a high adhesion strength (197 J m −2 ) on the skin, but also significantly extended the cracking cycles on the tissue surface during the peeling process from 4 to 380, marking an enhancement of nearly two orders of magnitude. Furthermore, with Young's modulus similar to that of human tissue (25 kPa), exceptional stretchability (1080%), and high ionic conductivity (7.14 S m −1 ), the LMCH interface demonstrates outstanding tissue compatibility, biocompatibility, and stable detection capabilities for electrocardiogram (ECG) and electromyogram (EMG) signals. This study presents new insights and potential for advancing bioelectronics and implantable interface technologies.

A fresh perspective on dissociation mechanism of cellulose in DMAc/LiCl system based on Li bond theory

Yi-Ying Ma,Ze-Long Lu,Yun-Zhu Xing,Wei-Shi Zheng,Chun-Guang Liu

In this case, various characterization technologies have been employed to probe dissociation mechanism of cellulose in N , N -dimethylacetamide/lithium chloride (DMAc/LiCl) system. These results indicate that coordination of DMAc ligands to the Li + –Cl − ion pair results in the formation of a series of Li x (DMAc) y Cl z (x = 1, 2; y = 1, 2, 3, 4; z = 1, 2) complexes. Analysis of interaction between DMAc ligand and Li center indicate that Li bond plays a major role for the formation of these Li x (DMAc) y Cl z complexes. And the saturation and directionality of Li bond in these Li x (DMAc) y Cl z complexes are found to be a tetrahedral structure. The hydrogen bonds between two cellulose chains could be broken at the nonreduced end of cellulose molecule via combined effects of basicity of Cl − ion and steric hindrance of [Li (DMAc) 4 ] + unit. The unique feature of Li bond in Li x (DMAc) y Cl z complexes is a key factor in determination of the dissociation mechanism.
