With the development of vanadium redox flow battery technology, the demand for pure vanadium is rapidly increasing. The separation of vanadium from vanadium–chromium leaching solutions are critical step in the production of purity-vanadium. This study presents an innovative adsorption process that utilizes amorphous ZrO 2 (AZrO) for the selective separation of V(V) and Cr(VI). In this process, a high adsorption capacity for V(V) at 64.5 mg·g –1 was achieved, while the capacity for Cr(VI) is relatively low at 24.1 mg·g –1 , demonstrating good separation performance. This is mainly caused by the large specific surface area and mesoporous structure, which are favorable for molecular diffusion and mass transfer. The kinetic analysis shows that the adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order kinetic process with chemisorption being the rate-controlling process. AZrO showed excellent separation performance in mixed solutions over a wide range of concentrations. After five cycles, AZrO retained over 73% of its capacity, indicating good stability. In mixed solutions containing up to 40 g·L –1 of V(V) and 3 g·L –1 of Cr(VI), the innovative adsorption process successfully achieved effective separation and purification. By an adsorption–desorption process using 0.1 mol·L –1 NaOH, a 99.02% V(V)-rich solution was obtained from a high concentration sodium vanadium slag leaching solution, demonstrating its effectiveness for practical industrial applications.

The challenge of separating and recovering V(V) and Cr(VI) from wastewater is critical for environmental protection and industrial productivity due to the chemical similarities. In this study, a novel zirconium-based adsorbent with superior adsorption performance and selectivity was synthesized using the Sol-Gel method, with a specific surface area of up to 265.3 m 2 /g. The maximum adsorption capacities of V(V) and Cr(VI) were 222 and 123 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir isothermal adsorption and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption mechanism was thoroughly investigated confirming that the adsorption of V(V) and Cr(VI) on amorphous hydrous ZrO 2 (AHZOs) is chemisorption. At a pH of 3, the values of ΔG 0 (−46.8 kJ/mol) and E ads (−5.67 eV) for the main existing form H 3 V 10 O 28 3- on AHZOs are lower than those for the main existing form HCrO 4 - . V(V) replaced the adsorbed Cr(VI) during competitive adsorption to achieve selective adsorption of V(V) with a separation coefficient as high as 3142. The adsorption capacity of V(V) remains above 105 mg/g after five cycles. After adsorption, the purity of Cr(VI) can be increased to above 99.5 %, and a solution of V(V) with a purity higher than 99.25 % can be obtained after desorption. The use of 3 g/L and 100 g/L adsorbent can decrease the single V(V) and Cr(VI) to 1.618 mg/L and 0.36 mg/L, respectively, and meet the emission standards.

Fluoride contamination in groundwater is a worldwide problem that is related to human health. Zirconium-based adsorbents possess satisfactory selective defluoridation capacities. However, narrow efficiency pH range, easy aggregation and difficult separation are the main obstructions in practical application. In this study, the branched polyethyleneimine (bPEI) modified hydrous zirconium oxide (HZO)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers (NFs) are synthesized by immobilizing bPEI-HZO into PAN nanofibers via electrospinning. The resultant bPEI-HZO/PAN NFs exhibit a wide working pH range and an excellent adsorption capacity toward fluoride (67.51 mg·g −1 ) even at neutral condition, indicating non-negligible superiority in the practical application of groundwater defluoridation. This enhanced adsorption performance along with extended wider working pH range are ascribed to the optimization of the adsorbents from both composition and structure. Compositionally, the modification of bPEI improves the surface property of HZO, and thus increases fluoride capacity in alkaline groundwater. Structurally, electrospinning conquers the drawbacks of nano-adsorbents for both easy aggregation and difficult separation. In addition, the effect of co-existing ions was further investigated and the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as well as fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR) measurements were used to clarify the fluoride adsorption mechanism. Furthermore, the dynamic adsorption and regeneration performance were accomplished through the fixed-bed column experiment. All the results indicated that bPEI-HZO/PAN NFs are promising materials for defluoridation from groundwater.

Zirconium-based materials exhibit strong affinity for F − and As(III), but their practical application is hindered by hydrolysis susceptibility and limited adsorption capacity for As(III). In this study, we employed a ligand modification strategy, incorporating five organic ligands (acetylacetone, malonic acid, acetic acid, citric acid, and tartaric acid) to synthesize structurally stabilized zirconium-based adsorbents (PZA) via the sol-gel method. The adsorption performance and underlying mechanisms for F − and As(III) removal were systematically investigated. Our results demonstrate that ligand modification significantly optimizes the physicochemical properties of the materials, enhancing adsorption performance. The citric acid-modified adsorbent achieved a F − adsorption capacity of 79 mg/g, a 1.4-fold increase over unmodified materials, whereas the acetylacetone-modified adsorbent reached an As(III) adsorption capacity of 258 mg/g, surpassing most reported materials. Density functional theory calculations reveal that ligands improve adsorption through dual mechanisms of “geometrical configuration regulation” and “electronic effect”: (1) Ligand modification alters the electrostatic potential distribution on the material surface, expanding positive and negative charge regions by 29–42 % and 20–26 %, respectively, thereby strengthening electrostatic interactions with pollutants; (2) Frontier orbital analysis indicates that ligands reduce the HOMO-LUMO energy gap (ΔE decreased by 3.0–24.6 %), enhancing electron transfer capability; (3) Binding energy calculations confirm the spontaneity of the adsorption process. This study provides a novel strategy for the rational design of high-performance environmental functional materials through precise ligand engineering.
