In the present work, four oxides (SiO 2 , TiO 2 , LaO 1.5 , or CeO 2 ) were selected as additives to increase the surface areas and the pore wall stability of mesoporous zirconia (ZrO 2 ) fibers in virtue of enhancing the skeleton stability and hindering the grain growth. The preparation, characterization, and thermal evolution of mesoporous ZrO 2 fibers incorporated with different amounts of oxide additive and simultaneously combined with heat treatment via water vapour are presented. The effects of different oxide additives on the crystallization and phase transformation of mesoporous ZrO 2 fibers were investigated by X-ray diffraction. N 2 adsorption-desorption studies were conducted to investigate the changes in the porous structure of the ZrO 2 fibers heat-treated at different temperatures. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed the mesoporous structure of the ZrO 2 fibers. The oxide-added ZrO 2 fibers heat-treated in the presence of water vapour exhibited a mesoporous structure with increased surface areas and thermal stability. The related reinforcing mechanisms were proposed. It was deduced that water vapour promoted the removal of the soft template, leading to the formation of a mesoporous structure with a high surface area. Meanwhile, the increase in the surface areas of mesoporous ZrO 2 fibers with the incorporation of the oxide additive was mainly due to the enhanced thermal stability of the porous walls. The relationship between the mesoporous structure stability and the zirconia phase stability was fully discussed. This work provides a new route for enhancing the surface areas and structure thermal stability of mesoporous ZrO 2 fibers.

Lithium-ion batteries have been receiving more and more attention because of the energy crisis. As an important subassembly of lithium-ion batteries, the separator greatly affects the safety of the batteries. Herein, we report for the first time, a novel method fabricated separator by mixing zirconia fibers with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) via papermaking process. The separators possess abundant pores and uniform structure after the phase inversion process. The separator properties were systematically studied at different proportion of PVDF. We find that when the content of PVDF is 40%, the separator has high porosity (77.69%), high electrolyte uptake (523.3%), and excellent thermal stability (thermal shrinkage ratio is 0% at 500 °C). In addition, the rate capability, cycle performance, and ionic conductivity are also investigated. We anticipate that the papermaking method of zirconia fibers will provide a strategy to fabricate a promising separator for enhanced electrochemical performance and high safety of lithium-ion batteries.

ZrO 2 fiber is a promising high-temperature resistant and heat-insulating fiber material. However, the decrease in mechanical properties caused by grain growth at high temperatures seriously affects its application. How to achieve the synergy of its temperature resistance and the thermal insulation performance is still the focus of the current industry. In this work, we started with doping inequivalent elements and studied the phase composition, temperature resistance, and thermal insulation properties of Y 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 ceramic fibers by adjusting the Y/Zr molar ratio. The results showed that Y 2 O 3 could enter the crystal lattice of ZrO 2 and form a solid solution. With the increase in Y 2 O 3 content, the structure of fibers changed from a tetragonal phase to a cubic phase, and the configurational entropy of the system increased. The larger configuration entropy in the sample could produce a robust steric hindrance effect, inhibiting grain growth. After heat treatment at 1300 °C, the grain size of Y 2 Zr 2 O 7 (Y5Z5) fibers was only 61.8% that of Y 0.1 Zr 0.9 O 1.95 (Y1Z9) fibers. The smaller grain size made the Y5Z5 fibers still have excellent flexibility and deformation recovery performance after heat treatment at 1300 °C and could still return to the original state after 85% compression or folded in half. In addition, due to the larger configurational entropy, the mean free path of phonon scattering was shortened, thereby improving the thermal insulation performance of the fiber. In short, this work achieves the synergistic effect of temperature resistance and thermal insulation properties of zirconia-based fiber materials only through simple inequivalent element doping. Zirconia fiber, with its resistance to ultra-high temperature, is irreplaceable in many applications. Herein, a technique combining the sol-gel method and electrospinning was used to fabricate uniform 1D zirconia nanofibers from zirconium polyacetate. A suitable heat treatment process was established, and the effects of spinning parameters and additives on the fiber morphology were investigated using XRD, SEM, TGA , and FTIR. The results showed that addition of silica effectively inhibited grain growth and reduced the grain size to 30–60 nm. By optimizing the electrospinning parameters and the sintering process , fine-grained tetragonal zirconia fibers of 400–700 nm diameter could be produced.

High-strength zirconia (ZrO 2 ) continuous fibers, which are potential candidates as ultra-high temperature thermal insulators and reinforced materials, are typically fabricated by dry spinning an organozirconium precursor. However, the uncontrolled decomposition of organozirconium precursor usually occurs upon heat treatment that breaks the continuous fibers into pieces, resulting in the loss of tensile strength. Herein, in this contribution, we aimed to maintain the integrity of ZrO 2 precursor fibers during heat treatment. For this purpose, novel high-pressure vapor (HPV) pretreatment of ZrO 2 precursor fiber was introduced. The HPV pretreatment is considered to be efficient for the removal of the organics in precursor, promoting the formation of amorphous structures of Zr(OH) 4 and Zr(OH) 3 HCO 3 . Combining the studies of microstructures and tensile strengths, it was found that the amorphous structures played roles of cross-linking points, keeping the fibers integrity during the followed heat treatment. After HPV pretreatment, the high-strength ZrO 2 continuous fibers would be obtained by direct sintering in air without any atmosphere which substantially lowered the cost. The tensile strengths of sintered ZrO 2 continuous fibers pretreated by an optimized HPV procedure could reach up to as high as 1.299 GPa. The HPV pretreatment method provides a high-efficiency, low-cost technique for preparing high-quality ceramic fibers.

This article reports a facile synthetic method for preparing hollow magnetic porous zirconia fibers based on electrospinning and their application as a carrier for the Fenton reaction. First, we prepared uniform hollow porous ZrO2 nanofibers by employing the coaxial electrospinning technique, followed by heat treatment. By adding magnetic particles to the inner electrospinning precursor solution, magnetic nanoparticles were conveniently assembled into the hollow ZrO2 fibers. The hollow magnetic porous zirconia fibers have a BET specific surface area of 34.70 m2 g−1 and a pore volume of 0.18 cm3 g−1. At the same time, the catalyst functioned as an excellent carrier to load iron ions for the Fenton reaction. These iron-loaded fibers exhibited excellent catalytic performance towards the degradation of organic pollutants, such as methylene blue and phenol. Methylene blue with different initial concentrations (from 50 ppm to 300 ppm) can be effectively degraded (99% to 90%). More importantly, the fibers have unique magnetic properties and can be easily removed and reused, thus showing great potential for practical applications.

Abstract Polycrystalline zirconia fibers with dense surface and good flexibility were achieved from polyaceticzirconium (abbreviated as PEZ) precursor fibers followed by steam pretreatment and post-calcination.
PEZ was synthesized via a one-pot solid–liquid reaction between basic zirconium carbonate and glacial acetic acid in methanol. Rheological behavior of the precursor sol with different concentrations was investigated, the power law model was used to describe the rheological behavior more accurately, and the relationship between the rheology and the spinnability of sol was discussed particularly. For the polymeric structure of PEZ, acetic acid was used as chelating agent and the carboxyl group was acted as a bidentate bridging ligand, which was speculated by FT-IR analysis. The effect of the pretreatment atmosphere on the evolution of the precursor fibers and the microstructure of the final fibers was discussed. The acetate group was removed in the form of molecules, and the final fibers preheated under steam atmosphere had better densification and flexibility than those were not. In addition, crystallization process, phase composition and thermal decomposition were investigated by XRD, Raman spectra and TG/DSC. Graphical Abstract The preheated atmosphere exerts an important influence on the densification and flexibility of zirconia fibers. Under steam atmosphere, acetate group in the precursor fibers is removed in the form of molecules and zirconia fibers sintered at 1050 °C for 2 h have a dense surface. However, zirconia fibers not subjected to the steam pretreatment have a large number of voids on the surface due to the decomposition of the organics. Furthermore, the fibers preheated under steam atmosphere have better flexibility than those were not. Therefore, pretreatment under steam atmosphere is essential for the preparation of the dense and flexible fibers.

Phosphate removal is an essential measure in controlling the eutrophication of water. In this work, the electrospinning mesoporous zirconia fibers with high surface area were prepared and used as adsorbents to remove phosphate in aqueous solutions for the first time. The electrospinning mesoporous zirconia fibers which had large surface area and uniform pore size were prepared by the use of ammonium lauryl sulfate (ALS) and triblock co-polymer Pluronic (P-123) as dual surfactants . The morphology and composite were represented by XRD , TGA/DTA, FT-IR, SEM, and TEM . The specific surface area and pore properties of fibers were investigated by nitrogen adsorption-desorption method. These mesoporous zirconia fibers performed an outstanding phosphate adsorption ability whose maximum adsorption capacity could reach 222.79 mg/g, meanwhile, a nice cycle performance was also observed as the removal rate could remain 92.5% after 5 cycles on the initial concentration of 30 mg/L. The Freundlich model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model were both fitted with the adsorption data properly. Besides, the fibers also performed a nice ability in anti-interference against the changes of solution pH value and co-existing ions. Thus, the prepared mesoporous zirconia fibers would be a potential adsorbent of phosphate removal process under the conditions of actual wastewater treatment, with the advantages of the excellent adsorption efficiency, low in production cost, high repeatable utilization and environment friendly.

In recent years, ceramic fiber aerogel have been one of the most attractive insulating materials due to its low thermal conductivity, excellent mechanical properties and heat resistance. However, the high radiation heat transfer limits its practical application at high temperatures. In this study, a novel SiO 2 -ZrO 2 fiber aerogel/TiO 2 composite (SZTFAs) was successfully designed and prepared through an air-assisted electrospinning technique in conjunction with the hydrolysis of TiCl 4 . The SZTFAs exhibits anatase TiO 2 nanocoating on the fiber surface. The SZTFAs have low density (14 mg/cm 3 ), good mechanical properties (up to 80% compressive strain, 105.6 KPa), excellent high temperature stability (1200 °C) and fatigue resistance (after 1000 cycles, the maximum stress and Young’s modulus of the SZTFAs remain above 60%) and low thermal conductivity (0.0292 W/(m·K)). After 10 min of exposure to a butane flame, the backside temperature of the SZTFAs was 165 °C, which was approximately 40 °C lower than that of the samples without added TiO 2 . Due to the porous layered three-dimensional structure of SiO 2 -ZrO 2 fibers aerogel and TiO 2 nanolayer with shielding infrared radiation, the SZTFAs exhibit excellent heat resistance and thermal insulation properties. This study provides a method for developing ceramic fiber aerogels with excellent thermal insulation and mechanical properties at high temperatures.

In this work, we have prepared a novel yttria-stabilized zirconia fiber (YSZ f )-reinforced (La 1/5 Nd 1/5 Sm 1/5 Gd 1/5 Yb 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 porous ceramics (YSZ f /(5RE 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 PCs) through a foam-gelcasting-freeze drying process. The microstructure, phase composition, density, porosity, thermal conductivity, and compressive strength of the as-prepared YSZ f /(5RE 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 PCs were systematically investigated. In addition, the high-temperature thermal cycle stability and thermally insulating property of the samples were also tested. The results indicated that the as-synthesized YSZ f /(5RE 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 PCs (with 25 wt% YSZ fibers) exhibited high porosity, high compressive strength, low thermal conductivity as well as low thermal cycling shrinkage. This work demonstrated that the added YSZ fiber can remarkably improve the strength of (5RE 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 PCs with the high porosity, and as-developed YSZ f /(5RE 1/5 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 PCs would be an excellent candidate for high-temperature thermal insulator materials.
