This work studied the application of phosphoric acid-gallic acid in vinyl chloride acrylic emulsion and its rust conversion performance. The increase of phosphoric acid affected the stability of the system, leading to the rapid precipitation of flocculent precipitation. Rust conversion coating (RCC) showed the best synergistic conversion effect when gallic acid (GA) was 0.2 wt.% and phosphoric acid (PA) was 2 wt.%. XRD and FTIR analysis show that the components of adherent rust (AR) are α-FeOOH, γ-FeOOH and Fe3O4. The conversion products are ferric phosphate (FP) and ferric gallate (FG). The RCC can effectively treat the rusted steel (RS) produced by simulated marine atmospheric corrosion. The corrosion current density was reduced by three orders of magnitude, the adhesion reached 2.75 MPa, and the salt spray corrosion resistance was 20 days. The results of Raman, XPS, SEM and EDS show that the ionic dissolution of iron, complexation and further oxidation reactions occur at the interface between the adherent rust and the RCC. After rust conversion treatment, unreacted rust (UR) affects the further improvement of adhesion strength and anti-corrosion performance. Keywords:rust conversion coating;anticorrosion;gallic acid;acrylic emulsion;rust converter

The continuous development of the global marine industry has posed significant challenges to sustainable development due to corrosion in marine engineering structures. While rust converters are regarded as cost-effective solutions for corrosion mitigation, existing technological advancements fail to meet the heightened demands of contemporary marine engineering practices. To address these limitations, an MXene–phytic acid–gallic acid (M–P–G) hybrid composite was synthesized by integrating two-dimensional nanomaterial Ti3C2Tx with organic acids (gallic acid and phytic acid). This composite achieved synergistic enhancement in both rust-conversion capability and corrosion inhibition performance. Experimental results demonstrated that the M–P–G composite with a mass fraction of 1.0 wt % formed a dense rust-conversion layer on substrates, significantly improving protective performance. The M–P–G/epoxy (EP) coating exhibited an impedance modulus of 1.51 × 109 Ω cm2, surpassing conventional coatings by 2 orders of magnitude. Furthermore, through density functional theory calculations combined with scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared analyses, a corrosion protection mechanism was proposed. This mechanism elucidated the differential conversion capacities of the organic acids toward diverse corrosion products, providing critical insights for the rational design and evaluation of next-generation rust-conversion and anticorrosion materials.

Rust conversion and composite coatings offer effective solutions for enhancing corrosion resistance in structural materials used in marine environments. They are both cost-effective and easy to implement. In this study, we introduce a novel coating that combines tannic acid-based iron-rust conversion with graphene-based nanocomposites, resulting in improved corrosion resistance for epoxy coatings on steel surfaces. We employed a variety of characterization techniques to assess the superior anti-corrosion and structural properties of these new coatings, including X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with focused ion beam and energy dispersion X-ray spectrometer, transmission electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, as well as mechanical testing. The development of the new materials holds promise for environmental benefits and widespread industrial applications of nanocomposites in the field of rust conversion coatings.

Fabrication of coating system with high-performance and long-life anti-corrosion performance is an important way of prolonging service life and reduces the waste of metal equipment. Herein, one smart coating with rust conversion and self-healing characteristics was prepared though the addition of tannic acid (TA)-grafted cornstalks derived carbon nanosheets (CNS) and 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ)-loaded mesoporous silica (MS) into the coating. Thermogravimetric analysis results indicated that the grafting/loading rates for TA and 8-HQ were 17.5% and 27.3%, respectively. Pull-out test results reflected that the value of dry adhesion of the smart coating at the steel/coating interface was two times higher than that of the pure coating. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results reflected that the anti-corrosion performance and service life of the coating were evidently improved, and the coating exhibited self-repairing property. /Z/ f =0.01Hz of smart coating was still 1.8 × 10 7 Ω cm 2 after 80 days immersion. The high-performance and long-life of the coating were attributed to the sheet structure of CNS, formation of TA-Fe layer at steel/coating interface as well as chelate products between 8-HQ and corrosion products. It is expected that the prepared smart coating could find wide application due to the simplification the operations and improvement the service life of traditional coating.

We aimed to improve the corrosion resistance of transmission network cabinet equipment in high temperature and humidity environment. In this paper, using acid modified acrylic acid as the main component, the composite conversion agent was obtained by adding phosphoric acid phytic acid and other components. Through the surface morphology, electrochemical test and adhesion force test of rust conversion coating, the versatility and corrosion resistance of rust conversion coating on the substrates were analyzed. Combined with zinc phosphate primer, the effect of rust conversion agent on the adhesion and salt spray corrosion resistance of the commercial primers was studied. The composite conversion agent has good effect on atmospheric corrosion rust layer. The corrosion resistance and adhesion force of the atmospheric corrosion rust layer treated with rust conversion agent were significantly increased. The adhesion of zinc phosphate primer on atmospheric corrosion rust coating with rust conversion was three times higher than that of atmospheric corrosion rust coating without rust conversion, respectively. Composite rust conversion agent has broad versatility, which can be used for rust conversion of atmospheric corrosion rust layer. At the same time, it has a good corrosion resistance, that can obviously improve the corrosion potential of the corroded surface and reduce the corrosion current density. In addition, the composite rust conversion agent can significantly improve the adhesion and corrosion resistance of the primer coating.
