Solar irradiated construction of coordinatively unsaturated Znx+ (0

Jian Sun,Jiafei Ren,Haobo Ma,Xia Han,Juan Liu

Biomass-derived carbon is regarded as a potential replacement for commercial graphite carbon for the anode of powerful lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), because of its abundance and ecological advantage. In this research, biomass-derived carbon is prepared from natural Carex meyeriana Kunth, and the biomass-derived carbon electrode with coordinatively unsaturated Zn x+ (0 < x < 2) sites is synthesized by solar irradiation . The Zn x+ (0 < x < 2) electrode is used as the LIBs anode. It provides a highly specific capacity of 638.6 mAh g −1  at 200 mA g −1 after 900 cycles and an outstanding cycling capacity of 614.9 mAh g −1  at 1000 mA g −1 after 1000 cycles. The capacity of the electrode exceeds the majority of reported carbonaceous anodes. This study presents a practical strategy to prepare novel and low-cost carbonaceous anode. The resulting anode has promising potential for use in advanced LIBs and other energy storage devices due to its excellent Li + storage capability.

Nitrogen-doped carbon coated zinc as powder-based anode with PVA-gel electrolyte enhancing cycling performance for zinc-ion batteries

Yunhui Lin,Ming Zhang,Youzuo Hu,Shu Zhang,Ziqiang Xu,Tingting Feng,Haiping Zhou,Mengqiang Wu

Zn-powder based anodes are considered as candidates for Zn-based batteries in practical industrial applications in terms of cost, large-scale processing, versatility and tunability. However, Zn-P-based anodes suffer from even more severe side effects including corrosion, passivation, and uncontrolled dendrite growth. Herein, we successfully fabricated nitrogen-doped carbon coating layer on Zn particles (Zn-NC) as anode material for more homogeneous Zn deposition by inducing more zincophilic site on N-doped carbon layers and enhanced electrical connection with carbon networks on Zn-NC particle surface. Nevertheless, metallic Zn deposited on Zn-NC surface still suffers from unavoidable side effects with continuous cycling, even though the dendrite growth was suppressed. It is worth mentioned that PVA-gel electrolyte greatly improves the cycling performance of Zn-NC with limited water content, which can alleviate side reactions. Experiments and simulations address the importance of NC layers with higher electricity, chemical stability, and zincophilic property, as well as the role that PVA-gel electrolyte plays for the further improved cycling performance. Zn-NC with PVA-gel electrolyte achieves ultra-long cycling hours with over 3500 h at 1 mA cm −2 and 850 h at 5 mA cm −2 in symmetrical cells. This study provides a promising pathway and in-depth mechanistic analysis for Zn-powder based anode in versatile applications especially for flexible energy-storage devices.

Fabrication of large frame zincophilic bimetallic compounds as protective coatings for highly efficient Zn metal anodes

Yi-Han Song,Guo-Duo Yang,Tong Wang,Zhuo Wang,Su-Min Zhou,Xing-Long Wu,Hai-Zhu Sun

The integration of an artificial protective coating into the Zn metal anode is considered as a highly efficient approach to minimize growth of Zn dendrites. The present study involves the design and synthesis of NiCo nanomaterials featuring a three-dimensional (3D) open structure and an abundance of active groups on their surface. Subsequently, NiCo nanomaterials are applied as a protective coating onto Zn foil to safeguard the Zn anode. The NiCo protective coating provides a rich zincophilic site, thus enhancing the stability of the electrode and effectively inhibiting Zn dendrite growth. Hence, the NiCo@Zn\\|NiCo@Zn symmetric cell with a lifespan up to 950 h at a current density of 2 mA cm−2. When paired with NH4V4O10, the full battery exhibits satisfied ultra-long cycle stability, maintaining good capacity retention after 3000 cycles at 10 A g−1. This work provides a new idea for the practical application of zinc ion batteries.

Self-Adaptive Dirhodium Complexes in a Metal–Organic Framework for Synthesis of N–H Aziridines

Zhenzhong Li,Huating Jiang,Jinxiu Liu,Tiantian Ning,Nam T. S. Phan,Fang Zhang

Conformational dynamics of active sites in enzymes enable great control over the catalytic process. Herein, we constructed a metal–organic framework with conformationally dynamic active sites (Rh2-ZIF-8). The active sites in Rh2-ZIF-8 were composed of the imidazolate-bridged bimetallic center with a catalytic dirhodium moiety and structural zinc site. Even though the coordination sphere of the dirhodium species was saturated with two circularly arranged esp groups and two axial 2-MeIm ligands, it could still effectively catalyze the direct synthesis of N–H aziridines from olefins with high activity. We found that such a self-adaptive catalytic process was based on the dynamic breakage and reformation of the rhodium–zinc imidazolate bridges. Interestingly, the in situ generated dirhodium site with a unique Rh2(esp)2(2-MeIm)1 configuration was able to exhibit obviously enhanced selectivity compared to homogeneous catalyst Rh2(esp)2. Furthermore, the surrounding zinc imidazolate groups could effectively protect the dirhodium moieties from harsh environments, and this ultimately endowed it with high stability.

Atomic zinc sites with hierarchical porous carbon for high-throughput chemical screening with high loading capacity and stability

Mingyue Zhou,Xuan Wu,Yan Li,Huixia Zhang,Qinghua Liu,Linlin Song,Caiyun Wang,Betty Yuen Kwan Law,Zhihong Jiang,Wei Zhang

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease associated with aging, and the number of people affected is rapidly increasing. Abnormally hyperphosphorylated tau filaments and extracellular deposits of amyloid β-peptides (Aβ) fibrils are two important pathological hallmarks of AD. Currently, stopping the production of Aβ and blocking its aggregation is the main strategy for the treatment of AD. Turmeric is effective in treating neurodegenerative diseases, but there is no effective way to identify active compounds from their complicated chemical compositions. Instead of using conventional extraction and separation methods with low efficiency and time-consuming, our group tried to use atomic materials in high-throughput chemical screening due to their structural characteristics and the unique advantages of surface atomic. Herein, a novel atomic zinc sites with hierarchical porous carbon (Zn-HPC) was synthesized to quickly screen potential inhibitors of Aβ aggregation in turmeric. As-combined Aβ@Zn-HPC demonstrates superior storage stability and high selectivity, outperforming the most reported supporters for ligand fishing. Five compounds with strong affinity on Aβ@Zn-HPC were selected by high-performance liquid chromatography-hybrid linear ion trap/orbitrap mass spectrometer after incubation with turmeric extract. Finally, it was shown that curcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin can inhibit Aβ aggregation by using thioflavin-T fluorescence assay and biolayer interferometry. A new application for the accurate identification of Aβ aggregation inhibitors from turmeric were developed based on the active compounds possessing binding affinity to Aβ to inhibit its aggregation. The developed method could provide a promising tool for efficient drug discovery from natural product resources.
