Zinc-iodine batteries (ZIBs) have attracted widespread attention because of their efficient capacity for ion transport and safety. However, the shuttle effect and physical properties of iodine species tremendously hinder their practical applications. Herein, we report a nitrogen-doped biomass litchi-shell derived porous carbon (marked as N -LPC) as the iodine host for ZIBs. The porous-rich structure of N -LPC is favorable for iodine loading and electron/ion transfers. Furthermore, the doping of heteroatomic nitrogen provides abundant anchoring sites to achieve strong interaction with iodine, thus the self-discharge can be suppressed effectively. Accordingly, the N -LPC/I 2 composite cathode exhibits a specific capacity of 127 mAh/g at 100 mA g −1 , as well as excellent rate capability and cycle stability. This study provides a strategy for discovering the cost-effective carbonaceous iodine host material.

Aqueous Zn-I 2 batteries (AZIBs) are highly desirable for green energy-storage technologies, but their development was greatly limited by their unsatisfactory energy densities. Herein, we report high-energy-density rechargeable AZIBs achieved by anchoring high-mass iodine to a distinctive N-doped hierarchical porous carbon (NHPC) material with large micropore volume and rich N-doping. The NHPC combined strong iodine confinement caused by the micropore and powerful chemisorption of iodine species with pyridine-N doping, which enabled high loads of iodine up to 61.6 wt%. Notably, density functional theory calculations and experimental studies showed that abundant pyridine-N active sites promoted electron transfer, and the interconnected micro-mesoporous structure facilitated the Zn-ion diffusion to synergistically promote the redox kinetics of AZIBs. The high content of iodine-loading cathode exhibited a high capacity of 219.3 mA h g −1 at 1.0 C, indicating excellent rate capability and superior cycling stability with a low capacity decay of 0.00147% per cycle within 10,000 cycles at 5.0 C. In addition, a preliminary device assembled with three batteries in series provided a high energy density of up to 72.6 W h kg −1 calculated by the total mass of the battery, which is almost two times that of the commercial aqueous lead-acid and Ni-Cd batteries. The high energy density and long cycle life of this aqueous battery indicate its great application potential in large-scale energy storage.

The multielectron conversion electrochemistry of I–/I0/I+ enables high specific capacity and voltage in zinc–iodine batteries. Unfortunately, the I+ ions are thermodynamically unstable and are highly susceptible to hydrolysis. Current endeavors primarily focus on exploring interhalogen chemistry to activate the I0/I+ couple. However, the practical working voltage is below the theoretical level. In this study, the I0/I+ redox couple is fully activated, and I+ is efficiently stabilized by a chelation agent of cost-effective urea in the conventional aqueous electrolyte. A record-high plateau voltage of 1.8 V vs Zn/Zn2+ has been realized. Theoretical calculations combined with spectroscopy studies and electrochemical tests reveal that the coordination between the electron-deficient I+ and the electron-rich O and N atoms in urea molecules is thermodynamically favorable for I0/I+ conversion and inhibits the self-disproportionation of I+, which in turn promotes rapid kinetics and excellent reversibility of I0/I+. Moreover, urea decreases the water activity in the electrolyte by forming hydrogen bonds to further suppress the hydrolysis of I+. Accordingly, a high specific capacity of 419 mAh g–1 is delivered at 1C, and 147 mAh g–1 capacity is retained after 10,000 cycles at 5C. This work offers effective insights into formulating halogen-free electrolytes for high-performance aqueous zinc–iodine batteries.

Currently, aqueous rechargeable zinc-iodine (Zn I 2 ) batteries are recognized as promising new energy storage devices due to their significant advantages, including large theoretical capacity, rapid charging and discharging capabilities and high safety. However, the shuttle effect caused by the soluble polyiodide ions leads to low utilization of active iodine and coulombic efficiency (CE). Herein, we use a high-concentration iodine solution as the oxidizing agent to synthesize polypyrrole (PPy/I 2 ) for the first time. Compared with the PPy polymerized by using FeCl 3 as oxidant (PPy/FeCl 3 ), the Zn I 2 battery based on PPy/I 2 cathode demonstrates an extended cycle life (84.2 % after 3800 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 ), high CE (>98 % at 1.0 A g −1 ), and minimal self-discharge (75 % after rest 12 h). The results based on electrochemical testing and characterization indicate that the exceptional performance of PPy/I 2 is primarily attributed to the early insertion of iodine species during the preparation process. This insertion creates reserved space for polyiodide ions, and the positive charge on the main chains of PPy effectively restricts their shuttle during battery operating. Furthermore, due to the ideal shuttle inhibition of PPy/I 2 , the Zn corrosion caused by polyiodide ions is effectively inhibited. The detailed characterizations explore the charge storage mechanism of PPy/I 2 . This research has guiding significance for improving the performance of PPy-based Zn I 2 batteries.

High rate tolerance and long cycle life represent the critical demand of the market for energy storage devices, known as one of major challenges for the development of rechargeable aqueous batteries. Herein, a layered Mo4/3B2T2 (where “T” denotes -O, -OH, and -F terminations) MBene (a transition metal boride) with in-plane ordered metal vacancies is first proposed as an iodine species host of an aqueous Zn‖I 2 battery, delivering a discharge capacity of 106.8 mAh g −1 at 25 A g −1 after 230 000 cycles and 80 mAh g −1 at 100 A g −1 , far exceeding those of all Zn‖I 2 batteries ever reported. The high performance is attributed to the strong affinity with iodine species and accelerated the redox kinetics by the conductive MBene with metal vacancies, as evidenced by the one-step conversion of I ‒ /I 0 without the generation of I 3‒ ions. This work unlocks a new route for the construction of other halide or sulfur electrode batteries with superior durability and kinetics.

To address the low capacity and poor stability of aqueous zinc–iodine batteries owing to the insulating nature of iodine and the shuttle effect of polyiodide, herein, tungsten nitride-modified porous carbon polyhedron (W2N/N-C) was prepared via the pyrolysis of ZIF-8 injected with phosphotungstic acid (PTA@ZIF-8). During the thermal treatment process, the self-nitridation enabled the in situ formation of tungsten nitride nanoparticles in hierarchical porous carbon with nitrogen doping for favorable loading of iodine. When used as the electrode material, the zinc–iodine battery exhibited the low polarization during the charge/discharge process with improved reversibility and good cycling stability for 2000 cycles. The improved electrochemical performance would be attributed to the confinement effect of W2N/N-C for the reversible conversion between iodine and polyiodide, thus enhancing the redox reversibility and utilization of active materials. The present work demonstrates an efficient strategy to prepare porous carbon with metal nitrides via the combination of carbonization and self-nitridation process for high-performing zinc–iodine battery.

The development of separator by tunning the zincophilic and iodide ion-repulsive properties of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) that regulate cycle lifespan and capacity of aqueous zinc-iodine (Zn-I 2 ) batteries is one of challenges. In this work, we have shown a systematic strategic-driven investigation to elucidate the role of functional triazine properties in COF modified separator towards overall performance of aqueous Zn-I 2 batteries. As such, three COFs with the same topology but different triazine number in their structures, have been synthesized, among which the triazine-richest framework, TAPA-TTB-COF-based separator demonstrated to be most effective to guide uniform Zn 2+ flux and simultaneously inhibit polyiodide shuttling due to the zincophilic nature and good iodide ion-repulsive capability of triazine. Consequently, the Zn||Gr@TAPA-TTB-COF@GF||Zn symmetric battery achieves a long life of more than 2100 h (5.0 mA cm −2 ) and the initial area capacity of the Zn||Gr@TAPA-TTB-COF@GF||I 2 battery reaches up to 5.5 mAh cm −2 (20 mA cm −2 ). After 2000 cycles, the discharge capacity can still maintain at 3.0 mAh cm −2 with a capacity decay rate of only 0.023 % per cycle. This study provides guidance for the rational design of functional COFs separators and promotes their application in high energy storage systems.

The shuttle of iodine species is considered the obstacle to the application of aqueous zinc iodine (Zn-I 2 ) batteries. Although cathode hosts with electrostatic adsorption to iodine species have been developed to suppress the shuttle effect of polyiodide, the strong interaction between polyiodide and hosts significantly slow down the kinetics of oxidation–reduction of iodine species. Here, a host with strong constraint and catalytic effects on iodine species based on strong base ion exchange resin is established, while the interaction and catalytic performance of hosts on iodine species is regulated by adjusting the functional group structure and the loading amount of quaternary ammonium cobalt phthalocyanine (QACoPc). UV–vis spectroscopy and electrochemical characterization confirm that the iodine host suppresses the shuttle of polyiodide. Moreover, the kinetic analyses reveal that the introduction of QACoPc into host improves the redox kinetic process of iodine species. Consequently, the polymer-based Zn-I 2 battery exhibits stable cycling ability (98.9 % retention rate after 2000 cycles at the current density of 10 C, 1 C: 160 mAh g −1 ) and excellent rate performance (150.6 mAh g −1 at 1 C and 105.9 mAh g −1 at 50 C) due to the strong constraint and catalytic effects of host on iodine species.

Aqueous zinc–iodine batteries (AZIBs) are gaining attention for their ability to store and convert electrical energy. Nevertheless, their performance is hindered by the continual migration of polyiodides towards the zinc anodes, leading to undesirable side reactions, diminished coulombic efficiency, and compromised cycling stability. Traditional carbon materials have proven inadequate in resolving these challenges, mainly due to their limited iodine capacity and weak binding forces. Herein, we explore the use of porous carbon nanosheets (PCNSs) synthesized via the “Pharaoh’s Serpent” reaction as cathode electrodes in AZIBs without pre-load iodine. The PCNSs, characterized by their nanosheet structure and expansive specific surface area, not only facilitate a shorter diffusion path for rapid electrolyte infiltration but also provide numerous sites for ion adsorption and capacitive storage, markedly improving the efficacy of electrochemical reactions and ion migration rates. Utilizing the synthesized PCNSs as the cathode electrode in AZIBs, a specific capacity of 296 mAh g −1 was achieved at 0.3 A g −1 . Even when the current density increased to 30 A g −1 , a specific capacity of 144 mAh g −1 was still attained, with a capacity retention ratio of up to 48.6%, which is competitive with that of supercapacitors. In addition, the AZIBs demonstrated impressive cycling stability, retaining 103% of their capacity after 10,000 cycles, and a notable energy density of 266.4 Wh kg −1 based on the cathode material. These findings significantly broaden the application of carbon materials in AZIBs research, emphasizing their potential in advancing AZIB technology.

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-iodine batteries (ZIBs) are considered a promising newly-developing energy-storage system, but the corrosion and dendritic growth occurring on the anode seriously hinder their future application. Here, the corrosion mechanism of polyiodide is revealed in detail, showing that it can spontaneously react with zinc and cause rapid battery failure. To address this issue, a sulfonate-rich ion-exchange layer (SC-PSS) is purposely constructed to modulate the transport and reaction chemistry of polyiodide and Zn 2+ at the zinc/electrolyte interface. The resulting ZIBs can work properly over 6000 cycles with high-capacity retention (90.2%) and reversibility (99.89%). Theoretical calculations and experimental characterization reveal that the SC-PPS layer blocks polyiodide permeation through electrostatic repulsion, while facilitating desolvation of Zn(H 2 O) 6 2+ and restricting undesirable 2D diffusion of Zn 2+ by chemisorption.

Zn–iodine (I 2 ) battery, as a promising energy storage device, especially under high I 2 loading, is harassed by the shuttle effect of the soluble polyiodide intermediates. Herein, the bifunctional role of 2D carbon nanosponge with rich P-dopant (4.2 at%) and large specific surface area (1966 m 2 g −1 ) in anchoring I 2 /I x − ( x = 1, 3 or 5) and catalyzing their mutual conversion is reported. Both experiment and computational results reveal the transfer of electrons from the P-doped site to iodine species, showing strong interfacial interaction. When being used as a host, it possesses high specific capture capacity for I 2 (3.34 g iodine g −1 or 1.6 mg iodine m −2 ) and I x − (6.12 g triiodide g −1 or 3.1 mg triiodide m −2 ), which thus effectively suppresses the shuttle effect, supported by in situ UV–vis and Raman spectra. In addition to the strong interfacial interaction that favors iodine conversion, the P-doped sites can also catalyze the conversion of I 5 − to I 2 , which is the rate-determining step. Consequently, Zn–I 2 batteries under a high I 2 content (70 wt%) deliver high specific capacity (220.3 mAh g −1 ), superior Coulombic efficiency (>99%), and low self-discharge rate; moreover, they can also operate steadily at 2 A g −1 with ignorable capacity decay for 10 000 cycles.

The synthesis of porous carbon materials as host materials to adsorb iodine solely through a high density of micropores is insufficient to meet the demands of high-performance aqueous zinc‑iodine batteries (AZIBs). To address this limitation, we designed a nitrogen‑phosphorus co-doped hierarchical porous carbon (NP-HPC) with mesopore dominance and high phosphorus doping levels (8.52 % nitrogen and 6.64 % phosphorus) using a sol carbonization strategy. Specifically, the abundant mesopores are conducive to promoting rapid mass transfer at the solid-liquid interface and enabling the electrolyte to reach the inaccessible micropore. The synergistic effect of special pore structure and high nitrogen and phosphorus doping levels in NP-HPC makes it a promising host to confine iodine tightly. Furthermore, the density functional theory calculations (DFT) results reveal that N, P co-doping enhances nitrogen atom charge accumulation, improves carbon skeleton zinc adsorption capacity, and provides extra pseudo capacity for AZIB. Therefore, the optimized NP-HPC-assembled AZIBs exhibited an excellent discharge-specific capacity of 123.4 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 with a high iodine loading of 13.25 mg cm −2 and a capacity retention of 90 % after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 . This study not only presents insights into the design of porous carbon with high heteroatom doping level, but also proposes a novel approach for achieving high area-specific capacity AZIBs.
