V2C MXene synergistically coupling FeNi LDH nanosheets for boosting oxygen evolution reaction

Yafeng Chen,Heliang Yao,Fantao Kong,Han Tian,Ge Meng,Shuize Wang,Xinping Mao,Xiangzhi Cui,Xinmei Hou,Jianlin Shi

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a pivotal electrochemical reaction process for many renewable energy technologies. Due to the sluggish OER kinetics, searching for efficient low-cost non-precious metal catalysts is one of the crucial but very challenging steps. Herein, V 2 C MXene synergistically coupled with hypophosphite-intercalated FeNi (oxy)hydroxide (H 2 PO 2 − /FeNi-LDH-V 2 C) electrocatalyst is synthesized. The H 2 PO 2 − /FeNi-LDH-V 2 C exhibits excellent OER performance with an overpotential of 250 mV (η 10 ) and small Tafel slope of 46.5 mV dec −1 in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, and excellent rechargeable Zn-air battery performance with superior open circuit potential (1.42 eV), power density (137 mW cm −2 ) and well durability. The strong interaction and electronic coupling with prominent charge-transfer between FeNi-LDHs and V 2 C MXene endow the composite significant OER performance and structural stability, and the adsorption/desorption balance for the OER reaction pathway, eventually promoting the intrinsic activity. This work demonstrates the great promise of MXene-based nanohybrids as advanced electrocatalysts for renewable energy applications.

Graphitic-nitrogen-enriched carbon skeleton with embedment of Fe3C for superior performance air cathode in zinc-air battery

Quan Zhou,Yue Yang,Qitong Ye,Tong Xue,Mudong Tu,Yipu Liu,Hua Li,Xiang-Hui Yan,Zhong-Li Zou,Bei-Ping Wang,You-Jun Lu,Feng-Lan Han

Combining catalytic active materials with nitrogen-doped carbon structure has been an effective strategy for designing high-performance electrocatalysts , where N species plays a vital role in modulating the electronic structure of composite material. The N dopant in the carbon structure exists in different states, but it has been ambiguous which type of N structure contributes the most to the overall catalytic activity. Here, Fe 3 C nanoparticles embedded in graphitic nitrogen-dominated carbon framework (Fe 3 C@NC) has been successfully fabricated from Fe@ZIF-8 and exhibits excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and stability. Experiments and theoretical calculations confirm the interaction between Fe 3 C and N-doped carbon. Moreover, graphitic nitrogen is proved to exhibit the highest promotion contribution among different N states, which can effectively reduce the energy barrier of the potential determining step (from O 2 to ∗OOH) for ORR. The Fe 3 C@NC composite is applied as the air cathode in a Zn-air battery, which shows a high E OCV (open-circuit voltage) of 1.48 V, a power density of 155.6 mW/cm 2 , and a specific capacity of 798 mAh/g Zn . This work suggests the synergy of Fe 3 C, N species, and carbon layer in promoting the performance of ORR catalysts.

Construction of 3D Hierarchical Co3O4@CoFe-LDH Heterostructures with Effective Interfacial Charge Redistribution for Rechargeable Liquid/Solid Zn–Air Batteries

Zihao Chen,Senjie Dong,Minghui Wang,Zunpeng Hu,Huiling Chen,Ye Han,Ding Yuan

Constructing three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical heterostructures is an appealing but challenging strategy to improve the performance of catalysts for electrical energy devices. Here, an efficient and robust flexible self-supporting catalyst, interface coupling of ultrathin CoFe-LDH nanosheets and Co3O4 nanowire arrays on the carbon cloth (CC/Co3O4@CoFe-LDH), was proposed for boosting oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in rechargeable liquid/solid Zn–air batteries (ZABs). The strong interfacial interaction between the CoFe-LDH and Co3O4 heterostructures stimulated the charge redistribution in their coupling regions, which improved the electron conductivity and optimized the adsorption free energy of OER intermediates, ultimately boosting the intrinsic OER performance. Besides, the 3D hierarchical nanoarray structure facilitated the exposure of catalytically active centers and rapid electron/mass transfer during the OER process. As such, the CC/Co3O4@CoFe-LDH catalyst achieved excellent OER catalytic activity in alkaline medium, with a small overpotential of 237 mV at 10 mA cm–2, a low Tafel slope of 35.43 mV dec–1, and long-term durability of up to 48 h, significantly outperforming the commercial RuO2 catalyst. More impressively, the liquid and flexible solid-state ZABs assembled by the CC/Co3O4@CoFe-LDH hybrid catalyst as the OER catalyst presented a stable open circuit voltage, large power density, superb cycling life, and satisfactory flexibility, indicating great potential applications in energy technology. This work provides a good guidance for the development of advanced electrocatalysts with heterostructures and an in-depth understanding of electronic modulation at the heterogeneous interface.

Phosphorus doped Co9S8@CS as an excellent air-electrode catalyst for zinc-air batteries

Wanqing Li,Yuhang Li,Hongquan Fu,Guangxing Yang,Qiao Zhang,Shengzhou Chen,Feng Peng

A novel phosphorus-doped Co 9 S 8 and carbon nanosphere composite (Co 9 S 8 /P@CS) was successfully prepared by adding a certain amount of sodium hypophosphite during the thermal treatment process of preparing Co 9 S 8 . The results of XRD and XPS confirmed the incorporation of phosphorus into the lattice of Co 9 S 8 . Electrochemical tests demonstrated that Co 9 S 8 /P@CS performs a high electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Under the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , Co 9 S 8 /P@CS-1:2 as the best catalyst has the lowest overpotential of 233 mV and Tafel slope of 48 mV dec –1 , which is far superior to the current noble-metal catalyst IrO 2 (414 mV, 96 mV dec –1 ). A rechargeable Zn-air battery was assembled with Co 9 S 8 /P@CS-1:2 as the air-electrode catalyst. Its maximum power density reached 142.50 mW cm −2 at 0.56 V and the current density was 255.47 mA cm −2 , significantly higher than those of the battery made by Pt/C-IrO 2 catalysts. Especially, after 350 h (1050 cycles) of charge and discharge, the performance of this assembled battery did not show a significant decrease, predicting a broad application prospect. In-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to analyze the active sites of catalyst and catalytic mechanism, revealing the relationships between structure and the catalytic performance for OER.

Kai Chen,Suqin Ci,Qiuhua Xu,Pingwei Cai,Meizhen Li,Lijuan Xiang,Xi Hu,Zhenhai Wen

The application of electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is vital in a variety of energy conversion technologies. Exploring low-cost ORR catalysts with high activity and long-term stability is highly desirable, although it still remains challenging. Herein, we report a facile and reliable route to convert ZIF-8 modified by Fe-phenanthroline into Fe-incorporated and N-doped carbon dodecahedron nanoarchitecture (Fe-NCDNA), in which carbon nanosheets are formed in situ as the building blocks with uniform Fe-N-C species decoration. Systematic electrochemical studies demonstrate that the as-synthesized Fe-NCDNA electrocatalyst possesses highly attractive catalytic features toward the ORR in terms of activity and durability in both alkaline and neutral media. The Zn-air battery with the optimal Fe-NCDNA catalyst as the cathode performs impressively, delivering a power density of 184 mW cm –2 and a specific capacity of 801 mAh g –1 ; thus, it exhibits great competitive advantages over those of the Zn-air devices employing a Pt-based cathode electro catalyst.

Pyridinic and graphitic nitrogen-enriched carbon paper as a highly active bifunctional catalyst for Zn-air batteries

Haoqing Ji,Mengfan Wang,Sisi Liu,He Sun,Jie Liu,Tao Qian,Chenglin Yan

Pyridinic and graphitic nitrogen are recognized as the most promising dopants for promoting oxygen reactions since they are beneficial to the formation of corresponding C–N bonds as efficient active sites. However, complete control of such efficient nitrogen-doping sites in carbon materials is difficult to realize in practice in a pyrolysis process . Here, we present maximized pyridinic and graphitic nitrogen-doped oxygen electrode via the precise use of nitrogen-containing precursors and carbonization temperature. The critical roles of pyridinic and graphitic nitrogen dopants in enhancing oxygen reaction activity are unraveled and this highly active material exhibits a remarkable half-wave potential of 0.89 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and a small potential gap of 0.78 V between ORR and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 0.1 M KOH, which is one of the best to date among metal-free bifunctional electrocatalysts . Both zinc-air batteries using liquid electrolytes and the all-solid-state batteries assembled with such air cathodes exhibit excellent cycle performance and reversibility, which can be expressly observed by in-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization. This nitrogen dopants engineering strategy gives an effective methodology to make full use of nanocarbon materials for their practical applications in next-generation powerful and durable energy devices.

High oxygen reduction reaction activity of C-N/Ag hybrid composites for Zn-air battery

Zhiwei Zhang,Hanning Li,Jie Hu,Baozhong Liu,Qingrui Zhang,Carlos Fernandez,Qiuming Peng

A novel nitrogen-doped biomass carbon/silver (C-N/Ag) composite has been synthesized by a simple method, wherein the precursor of soymilk simultaneously serves as carbon and nitrogen sources, reductant and substrate. The structure, morphology and valence state of samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectra. Results show the formation of nano-sized Ag homogenously disperses on the surface of mesoporous substrate, and the self-reduction role mainly attributes to the presence of unsaturated carbon bonding. Electrochemical properties were characterized by galvanostatic discharge and impedance spectra techniques. The sample prepared with 1 mmol AgNO 3 solution, activated by 0.1 M KOH and annealed at 900 °C shows excellent oxygen reduction reaction activity and good electrochemical durability in alkaline medium. The onset potential, limiting diffusion current density and electron transfer number are 0.93 V, 6.26 mA cm −2 and 4.00, respectively, superior to those of 60 wt.% Ag/C and comparable to 20 wt.% Pt/C catalysts correspondingly. The discharge performance of Zn-air batteries is better than that of 20 wt% Pt/C.

Corrosion-engineered stereoscopic nano-microflower FeOOH for efficient electrocatalysis toward oxygen evolution reaction

Changwang Ke,Qin Zhao,Yu Zhang,Xiaofei Yang,Weiping Xiao

Designing inexpensive and high-efficiency Fe(oxy)-hydroxide nanomaterials are essential to accelerate the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, it is still a challenge to increase its electronic conductivity and exposure of the active site, as well as make it work under high current densities. Herein, a facile corrosion engineering strategy is proposed to in-situ synthesize the self-supporting Fe(oxy)-hydroxide heterostructures on nickel foam substrate in the corrosion system of “FeCl 3 -NaCl”. The morphologies and phase compositions characterization show that Cl - concentration can accelerate the oxygen corrosion process, while the concentration and species of metal irons can change the composition of the corrosion products. The synergistic effect of Cl - and Fe 3+ enabled the FeOOH-Fe 2.0 catalyst with stereoscopic nano-microflower structure, which owns abundant active sites, strong catalyst-base bond interaction, and fast electron transfer efficiency, reducing the potential reaction barrier of OER kinetics. Therefore, the obtained FeOOH-Fe 2.0 provides a lower overpotential of 263 mV to achieve the current density of 100 mA cm −2 and a low Tafel slope of 64.03 mV dec −1 in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Furthermore, the FeOOH-Fe 2.0 catalyst is used as an air electrode material to assemble Zn-air battery, which reaches the peak power density of 107.10 mW cm −2 and achieves long-term charge/discharge performance. This project offers a simple and effective method for preparing high-efficiency OER catalyst by corrosion strategy and confirms its application prospect in rechargeable Zn-air batteries.

Recycling cobalt from spent lithium-ion batteries for designing the novel cobalt nitride followers: Towards efficient overall water splitting and advanced zinc-air batteries

Zhuang Wang,Mian Li,Bin Fu,Wenping Cao,Xiangjie Bo

Although cobalt nitride (CoN)-based nanomaterials have been widely designed as advanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts, the continuous consumption of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has led to a high price of cobalt metal. Therefore, in the future, recycling valuable Co elements from spent devices and boosting their service efficiency will inevitably promote the utilization of Co-based materials in water splitting and zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, we realize the Co recycling from spent LIBs by a simple hydrometallurgy method. Under the assistance of hexamethylenetetramine and polystyrene spheres, after the hydrothermal and pyrolysis treatment in the NH 3 atmosphere, the as-reclaimed cobalt oxalates were successfully transformed into novel three-dimensional (3D) CoN nanoflowers (denoted as CoN NFs). Benefiting from the unique 3D flower-like architectures, intrinsic high conductivity, large surface area, uniformly dispersed CoN nanoparticles, and the synergistic effect between Co 3 N and CoO phases, the 3D flower-like CoN NFs exhibited excellent OER catalytic activity. The performance was much better than commercial RuO 2 in the 1.0 M KOH solution. Furthermore, the CoN NFs-based water splitting cell needed a voltage of 1.608 V to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which is even 16 mV smaller than that of Pt/C||RuO 2 benchmark (1.624 V). Meanwhile, the CoN NFs-derived ZAB exhibited a high peak power density of 107.3 mW cm −2 (vs. 103.2 mW cm −2 of Pt/C-RuO 2 -based ZAB) and a low charge–discharge voltage gap (0.93 V vs. 1.43 V of Pt/C-RuO 2 -based ZAB). Due to the excellent structural and elemental stabilities, the corresponding water splitting cell and ZAB had outstanding durability. This work successfully explored an advanced industrial chain from recycling Co metal in spent devices to designing the high-efficiency HER/OER/ORR electrocatalysts for advanced water splitting devices and ZABs. This will further promote the value-added utilization of valuable Co metal in various energy storage or conversion devices.

Porous N, B co-doped carbon nanotubes as efficient metal-free electrocatalysts for ORR and Zn-air batteries

Peng Wei,Xiaogang Li,Zhimin He,Xueping Sun,Qirui Liang,Zhengying Wang,Chun Fang,Qing Li,Hui Yang,Jiantao Han,Yunhui Huang

The flexible design and construction of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts with high activity, great stability, and superior cost efficiency are essential for metal-air batteries and fuel cells. Hollow carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered promising electrocatalysts owing to their outstanding thermal stability, robust chemical properties, and high specific surface area. Herein, a convenient and controllable solid-phase route is proposed for the preparation of porous nitrogen (N) and boron (B) co-doped carbon nanotubes (NBCNT) by using tubular polypyrrole (PPy) and sodium tetraphenylboron ((C 6 H 5 ) 4 BNa), in which (C 6 H 5 ) 4 BNa serves not only as a B source but also as a pore-forming agent that can help to regulate N configuration and expose more active sites. Due to the synergistic effects of porous one-dimensional hollow structure and the binary heteroatom doping, the optimized NBCNT catalyst demonstrates superior catalytic performance for ORR in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. Moreover, Zn-air batteries are constructed based on the as-prepared catalysts, which reveal a high operating voltage (1.43 V) and peak power density (173.93 mW cm −2 ), further demonstrating a comparable electrocatalytic performance of the catalysts to commercial Pt/C catalyst. This work reveals a novel construction of high-efficiency and cost-effective metal-free catalysts for various energy conversion and storage technologies.

UiO-66-NO2 as an Oxygen “Pump” for Enhancing Oxygen Reduction Reaction Performance

Shanshan Zeng,Fucong Lyu,Ligang Sun,Yawen Zhan,Fei-Xiang Ma,Jian Lu,Yang Yang Li

In this work, UiO-66-based metal–organic frameworks are investigated as an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst for the first time. UiO-66-NO2 is solvothermally grown on the surface of cobalt phthalocyanine-anchored carbon nanotube (CoCNT) surface, serving as an oxygen “pump” to accelerate the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The UiO-66-NO2-attached CoCNT (UiO-66-NO2@CoCNT) exhibits superior electrochemical catalytic properties, exceeding the state-of-the-art commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst with more positive half-wave potential (15 mV difference, at 1600 rpm), better stability (no significant degradation for UiO-66-NO2@CoCNT vs 19% degradation for 20% Pt/C after 25 000 s), and higher methanol tolerance. When assembled in a flexible zinc–air battery, the UiO-66-NO2@CoCNT remains a competitive alternative to commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst with comparable power density and excellent flexibility, suggesting its potential in wearable electronic devices. The outstanding performance of UiO-66-NO2@CoCNT composite is closely related to the synergetic effect among the three components: CNT as a conductive backbone, cobalt phthalocyanines as the oxygen reduction catalytic active site, and UiO-66-NO2 as an ideal oxygen adsorption pump (the oxygen diffusion rate is 4.8 times that of 20% Pt/C and 17.7 times that of CoCNT). The synergy between the three components facilitates oxygen adsorption, transfer of adsorbed oxygen molecules, oxygen reduction, and electron conduction.

Biomass Waste-Derived Electrocatalyst Constructed with g-C3N4 as a Multifunctional Template for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Liyan Wang,Sheng-Qi Guo,Zhenzhong Hu,Boxiong Shen,Wei Zhou

Graphical Biomass waste-derived electrocatalyst : A biomass waste-derived N-doped honeycomb-like carbon electrocatalyst by one-step pyrolysis. g-C 3 N 4 is used as a multifunctional template to control the morphology of the catalyst and provide a source of N. The catalyst delivers remarkable ORR activity and zinc-air battery performance with fast discharge and higher current density. Exploring an effective way to convert biomass waste into highly active oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts will not only benefit alleviating environmental management pressure, but also open up new ways for the development of alternatives to Pt-based catalysts. Although the traditional pyrolysis conversion method has been proved to be stable and feasible, the low electrocatalytic activity of the product and the cumbersome post-treatment process make it difficult to be popularized. Here, we report an effective method to overcome the mentioned drawbacks: the introduction of g-C 3 N 4 . The experimental results confirm that g-C 3 N 4 can be used as a multifunctional template for adjusting the morphology and providing N source. More importantly, it will decompose at 700 °C and avoid post-treatment of residues. The pyrolysis products assisted by g-C 3 N 4 exhibit similar ORR performances to commercial Pt/C, including onset potential of 0.963 V (vs. RHE), half-wave potential of 0.835 V (vs. RHE) and limiting current density of 6.35 mA ⋅ cm −2 . Impressively, the product displayed outstanding performance on output power density (107 mW ⋅ cm −2 ) and discharge performance at different current densities as the air electrode of zinc-air battery, which even superior to that of commercial Pt/C. This study elucidated the functional role of g-C 3 N 4 in reaction system and facilitated the development of more efficient biomass waste-based ORR electrocatalysts.
