Comprehensive Experimental Insights into Ultra-Long Cycle Life of Zinc-Ion Batteries Inspired by Super Low Concentrations of a Derivative of Urea in the Zinc Sulfate Electrolyte

Huilong Jian,Xue Yi,Lu Yang,Shengtao Zhang,Hongru Li,Fang Gao

In this study, a low-cost and friendly compound diazolidinylurea carrying a number of heteroatoms and inter/intra hydrogen bonding, a derivative of urea (DU), efficiently strengthened aqueous zinc ions batteries (AZIBs) in ZnSO4 electrolyte. The influence of DU on the zinc anode in the 2 M ZnSO4 electrolyte was fully studied by various surface chemistry and electrochemistry means. It is demonstrated that the super low concentration of DU (2 mM, 0.00556 wt %) could inhibit the formation of zinc dendrites, zinc corrosion, and the hydrogen evolution reaction during the constant current cycling of water system ZIBs, which thus enabled symmetric zinc–zinc batteries to reach a cycle life of 7336 h (nearly 306 days) under 1 mA·cm–2, 1 mA h·cm–2 at 25 °C and 426 h (nearly 18 days) at 55 °C, and inspired zinc–manganese full battery to maintain a capacity retention rate of more than 52% after cycling for 1000 cycles under a current of 2 A·g–1. These results are much superior over zinc ion cells based on the blank ZnSO4 batteries. Even if the Zn–Cu half cells including the DU/2 M ZnSO4 electrolyte were also more pronounced than those with the bare ZnSO4 electrolyte. The maximum corrosion inhibition efficiency of the DU for the zinc electrode in ZnSO4 solution exceeded 82%. Hence, the suppression of zinc corrosion and parasitic side reactions, as well as the formation and growth of zinc dendritic crystals by the addition of DU in zinc sulfate electrolyte, played a central role in intensifying aqueous zinc ion batteries.

In-situ scanning electrochemical microscopy visualization of self-passivation in galvanized steel under aggressive environments

Zeyu Huang,Hao Li,Yuhua Xiao,Qinhao Zhang,Pan Liu,Liankui Wu,Fahe Cao

Ensuring the long-term durability and safety of galvanized steel structures in industrial and environmental applications requires a deep understanding of their corrosion resistance, particularly at defects such as cut edges and scratches. These sites often initiate localized corrosion due to micro-environmental inhomogeneities. This study investigates the dynamic corrosion behavior of galvanized Zn/Q235 steel couples by integrating macro-electrochemical testing with in-situ high-resolution scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) to reveal the underlying interfacial physicochemical mechanisms. While macro-electrochemical measurements indicated significant passivation, with the corrosion current density decreasing by over an order of magnitude to 1.00 × 10⁻ 6 A·cm⁻ 2 after 24   h, micro-scale SECM mapping revealed a more complex mechanism. As corrosion progressed, oxygen reduction reactions became increasingly concentrated at the Zn/Q235 interface, where localized pH stabilized near 8. This remarkable pH buffering is attributed to the continuous precipitation of zinc corrosion products, an interfacial process that consumes both Zn 2+ and OH⁻ to form a passivating layer. At simulated scratch defects, an initially aggressive galvanic coupling with steep pH gradients was gradually suppressed as these precipitates formed, demonstrating a self-passivation effect. These findings elucidate a locally driven, interfacial chemical buffering mechanism, governed by precipitate formation, that controls passive film development and slows degradation. The results establish direct links between interfacial pH regulation, corrosion-product formation, and self-passivation at defects, advancing the interface science underpinning environmentally resilient galvanized coatings.

Interpenetrating Composite Hydrogel Electrolyte with Organic/Inorganic Polar Groups for Stable Zinc Metal Anode

Yaping Wang,Jiashuo Guo,Chao Liang,Wenyan Wang,Jiyuan Shi,Anqiang Pan,Yifang Zhang

Hydrogel electrolytes have been widely explored in flexible zinc batteries owing to their considerable mechanical strain and water-retaining properties. However, it is difficult to balance the contradiction between the ionic conductivity and the mechanical strength due to the deterioration of structural stability with the addition of electrolyte salts. To address this, we designed a coassembling organic–inorganic hydrogel (P–P/M) based on poly(vinyl alcohol)-polyacrylamide (P–P) interpenetrating matrix decorated with Zn-based montmorillonite (Zn-MMT). The Zn-MMT with overall negative potential can attract and regulate the transport of Zn2+, while the Brønsted/Lewis acid sites with positive polarizations offer anchoring sites for anions, which increases the cation transference number and reduces byproduct formation. Moreover, the formation of hydrogen bonds in the hydrogel can weaken the contact between free water molecules and the zinc cations, which effectively suppresses the corrosion of zinc foil. Consequently, the Zn//Zn cell with P–P/M electrolyte delivers a long cycle life of 2400 h at 0.5 mA cm–2. The good mechanical properties of the P–P/M hydrogel boost its application in flexible pouch cells even under bending and cutting conditions. This study provides an effective approach to designing organic–inorganic hydrogel electrolytes for long-life flexible zinc batteries.

Ultrathin formvar film protective layer via simple dipping strategy for ultra-stable zinc-metal anodes

Lihong Dong,Chunhui Zhao,Linlin Li

Aqueous Zn ion batteries (ZIBs) have become a strong competitor in the field of large-scale energy storage. However, surface side reactions, such as Zn corrosion, hydrogen evolution reaction, and dendrite growth, lead to low reversibility of Zn anode. This study introduces a time-saving and simple solution-dipping method to address above issues by spreading ultrathin Poly (vinyl formal) (PVF) protective layer on the surface of Zn anode (denoted as PVF@Zn). Owing to its abundant oxygen-containing functional groups, PVF molecule exhibits not only highly adhesive force with Zn metal surface but also higher zincophilicity with Zn 2+ ions. The former effectively prevents direct contact between electrolyte and Zn anode as well as guides a three-dimensional (3D) diffusion mode of Zn 2+ plating, the latter reduces the Zn nucleation energy barrier as well as enhances the uniformity of Zn deposition. Meanwhile, the hydrophilic and ion conductivity characters endow the PVF film with abundant nucleation sites and homogenous electric field distribution, further guaranteeing an even Zn deposition. Moreover, the outstanding mechanical strength and elasticity of the PVF film can withstand the volume variation during Zn plating/stripping, which is conducive to inhibit the growth of dendrites. Consequently, symmetrical cells assembled by the PVF@Zn electrodes deliver dendrite-free plating/stripping and an ultra-long stable cycle of 4900 h at 0.5 mA cm −2 , 1.0 mAh cm −2 . Even though the current density is as high as 10 mA cm −2 , the PVF@Zn electrode still possesses a cycling life of 4000 h and the corresponding cumulative plating capacity is up to 20,000 mAh cm −2 . When paired with a MnO 2 cathode, the PVF@Zn anode retains 72.5 % capacity over 1000 cycles at 1 A g −1 , which is much better than that of bare Zn (18.4 %). This work provides a promising method for rapidly fabricating ultrathin Zn anode protective layer to inhibit dendrites and side reactions in aqueous Zn ion battery.

In-situ regulation of zinc metal surface for Dendrite-Free Zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors

Yujia Long,Xiaomin Huang,Yuanxia Li,Mei Yi,Jiaqi Hou,Xinyi Zhou,Qiang Hu,Qiaoji Zheng,Dunmin Lin

Aqueous Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) combine the high power density of supercapacitors with the high energy density of batteries. However, the growth of dendrite and spontaneous Zn corrosion damage the service life of ZHSCs and further seriously restrict their large-scale application in energy storage fields. Herein, we study the corrosion mechanism of Zn metal in ZnSO 4 solution and report a method for the modification of Zn anode with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) layer grown in-situ. The obtained ZIF-8 layer with hydrophobicity can not only inhibit Zn corrosion and induce Zn electroplating/peeling on the Zn surface, but also promote uniform deposition of Zn during charge/discharge processes. As a result, the prepared dendrite-free Zn electrode shows low polarization (89.0 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) and high cycling stability (over 800 h at 10 mA cm −2 ), and the developed ZHSC maintains a high capacity retention of 96% after 13,000 cycles at 5 A g −1 . Furthermore, a solar power supply system is assembled by the ZHSC and monocrystalline silicon plates to certify the utility of the device, and it can light a LED successfully. This study provides a simple and inexpensive strategy to manipulate the Zn electrodeposition behavior from dendrites to non-dendritic structures, which builds a way for the development of practical ZHSCs with mild electrolytes.
