Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have garnered significant attention owing to their merits of high safety, high theoretical specific capacity, low cost, and environmental benignity. However, irreversible challenges posed by side reactions and dendrite growth on zinc anodes have impeded their commercial deployment in large-scale energy storage applications. In this paper, a ZnCu-ZIF protective layer was in-situ grown on Zn foil through simple redox and coordination reactions to address the above issues. The protective layer efficiently isolates the anode surface from the aqueous electrolyte, thereby curbing severe parasitic reactions. Additionally, it facilitates uniform Zn deposition and mitigates dendrite growth. The findings indicate that the ZnCu-ZIF@Zn-1h symmetric cell maintains stable cycling for 2600 h at 1 mA cm −2 and 1 mAh cm −2 , demonstrating exceptional cycle stability. In addition, the ZnCu-ZIF@Zn-1h||MnO 2 full cell has a high specific capacity of 285.6 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and demonstrates excellent rate performance. Meanwhile, it retains 82.9% of its initial capacity after 1000 cycles at 1 A g −1 , exemplifying outstanding electrochemical durability. This work thus provides a novel paradigm for the facile scalable fabrication of highly reversible Zn metal anodes, highlighting significant potential for practical implementation.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) offer an attractive solution for grid-scale energy storage but suffer from a significant challenge in finding advanced Zn anodes and cathodes that are mutually compatible. Here we propose tellurides, specifically ZnTe, as a multifunctional material that can simultaneously serve as a Zn anode protective layer and a cathode material with excellent compatibility and performance. Theoretical analyses disclose that ZnTe possesses high electronic conductivity, favorable Zn 2+ adsorption and diffusion, and structural stability upon Zn 2+ insertion, which are fundamental to Zn anode protection and Zn 2+ storage. Experimental findings reveal that ZnTe effectively protects Zn anodes from dendrite growth and surface corrosion, resulting in a minimal voltage hysteresis of only 38 mV over 3100 h at 1 mA cm –2 . Additionally, the ZnTe cathode exhibits a conversion-reaction mechanism of ZnTe ⇄ ZnTe 2 ⇄ Te, with excellent plateau capacities. We also demonstrate the good compatibility between ZnTe-based anodes and cathodes by assembling full cells that deliver exceptional cyclability (80 % capacity retention at 2 A g –1 over 1000 cycles). Our work provides a general design guideline for compatible and advanced electrode materials for AZIBs.

The corrosion, parasitic side-reaction and dendrite of Zn anode as well as the dissolution of MnO 2 cathode limit the commercial application of zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). Herein, a novel coating layer on Zn anode and MnO 2 cathode of rechargeable ZIBs is rationally designed by mixing hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide(CTAB)-pillared organic montmorillonite with ZnSO 4 /MnSO 4 solution (ZnOMMT). ZnOMMT can serve as the protective layer to alleviate Zn corrosion and MnO 2 dissolution while the unique interlayer structure of ZnOMMT can also offer a selective pathway for fast Zn 2+ transfer and uniform Zn 2+ diffusion to inhibit the side-reaction and Zn dendrite generation. Notably, by the powerful pillaring of CTAB cations, the expanded and robust nanoscale interlayer tunnels of ZnOMMT for Zn 2+ diffusion are constructed to guarantee outstanding ionic conductivity (6.52 mS cm −1 ), high Zn 2+ transference number ( t + =0.66) and outstanding cyclic stability during deep cycles. Therefore, ZIBs with ZnOMMT coating layer deliver a steady long-term reversible capacity (267 mAh g −1 until 300 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 , 205 mAh g −1 until 700 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 ). The rational design of CTAB-pillared montmorillonite protective layer brings a brand-new opportunity to the realization of high-performance rechargeable ZIBs.
