Expanded graphite confined SnO2 as anode for lithium ion batteries with low average working potential and enhanced rate capability

Xianghong Chen,Haiying Lu,Yu Lei,Jiakui Zhang,Feng Xiao,Rui Wang,Peiran Xie,Jiantie Xu

To significantly improve the electrochemical performance of tin-based materials as anodes for lithium ion batteries , hybridizing tin-based nanomaterials with carbon is an effective way. This is due to carbon materials serving not only as conductive networks to increase the electrical conductivity , but also as construct void to buffer volume expansion. However, the use of excess carbon in hybrids and the low lithium storage ability of the carbon could lead to the reduced total capacity of the electrode. Herein, we develop a simple and effective approach to the synthesis of EG/SnO 2 - x in which SnO 2 nanoparticles are tightly anchored on the surface of expanded graphite (EG) with well-defined expanded structures and highly conductive frameworks. Benefiting from the rational mass loading of SnO 2 , as well as the high conductivity and strong lithium storage characteristic of EG, the EG/SnO 2 -3 hybrid displays outstanding electrochemical performance with excellent rate capability ( e.g. , 406.3 mAh g –1 at 1 A g −1 ) and long cycling stability ( e.g. , 262.7 mAh g −1 over 500 cycles). In particular, the large proportion of capacity secured from a narrow voltage range of 0.01–0.3 V, corresponding to a low average working potential, is vital for the hybrids applied in high voltage full-cell LIBs.

Towards a broad-operation window for stable CO2 electroreduction to HCOOH by a design involving upcycling electroplating sludge-derived Sn@N/P-doped carbon

Xiaohui Zhong,Zuqi Zhong,Shujie Liang,Gongchang Zeng,Shuang Cheng,Hong Deng,Zhang Lin

The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to HCOOH offers a promising strategy for a carbon-neutral cycle. Sn-Based materials have been demonstrated as applicable in extensive studies of CO2RR to HCOOH, but great challenges still remain, including the weak CO2 adsorption and narrow potential window as well as low stability. Herein, we developed ultrasmall Sn nanoparticles inlaid on N/P-doped carbon (Sn@NPC) composites by an upcycling design using Sn electroplating sludge. The obtained Sn@NPC electrode exhibited a higher Faradaic efficiency of 87.93% for HCOOH at 1.05 V vs. RHE and an FE over 80% within a 500 mV broad potential window. Moreover, the Sn@NPC electrode achieved excellent long-term stability up to 105 h, which was superior to that of most Sn-based catalysts in similar systems. Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that Sn@NPC could enhance CO2 adsorption, which led to stronger *OCHO adsorption, weaker *HCOOH adsorption and faster electron/mass transport. This work may provide a promising lead for recycling metal from electroplating sludge and for the design of efficient and stable catalysts for the CO2RR.

The core-shell structure of bacteria based C@Sn/Carbon nanotubes exhibits super stable cycling performance for lithium-ion battery anodes

Feng Li,Putao Han,Jun Zhou,Yuhua Yang

Tin-based materials are recognized as a promising anode for lithium-ion batteries due to their high theoretical capacity, abundant reserves in nature, and suitable low discharge potential. However, their practical application has been hindered by rapid capacity fading during cycling, which is primarily caused by pulverization during severe volume changes. To extend the lifespan of Tin-based anodes, it is essential to mitigate the significant volume alteration associated with the insertion and extraction of lithium ions. In this work, we engineer successfully a simple core-shell structure where Tin-based components are only encapsulated within bacterial cells and compounded with carbon nanofibers (Sn@C/CNT). The bacterial exterior carbon-shells preserve effectively the structural stability of the Sn nanoparticles, suppress their aggregation, and buffer their volume expansion. Additionally, the carbon nanofiber network on the surface, characterized by high electrical conductivity and excellent mechanical flexibility, securely anchor the core-shell structure. This design enhances significantly the electrical conductivity and structural integrity of the overall electrode. When utilized as an anode in lithium-ion batteries, Sn@C/CNT exhibits an outstanding cycling stability and excellent reversible capacity of 798.77 mA h g −1  at 10th cycle, and 736.31 mA h g −1 even after 150 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g −1 .

Regulation of Interstitial Buffering Space in Yolk–Shell Tin–Carbon Nanocomposites Used as Electrodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Haozhi Zhao,Congwei Wang,Quanlong Wang,Chuanyi Chen,Longyu Wang,Rongyu Li,Yongyong Yu,Yuede Pan,Gang Li,Kaiying Wang

Tin-based anodic materials, benefiting from their large theoretical specific capacity and minimal operating potential, are considered high-development potential alternative anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Nevertheless, the alloying-dealloying processes between tin (Sn) and lithium ions result in severe volume expansion, which leads to a poorly stabilized solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) layer and resultant inferior cycling performance, posing major obstacles to their commercialization. Herein, a structural regulation strategy was proposed to optimize the interstitial void buffer layer within yolk–shell structures to mitigate the lithiation-associated volume expansion. The tetraethyl orthosilicate-hydrolyzed SiO2 layer was located between Sn and the resin-derived carbon coating, whose thickness could be sophisticatedly optimized via regulating the hydrolysis durations. Following the carbonization and etching, an optimized buffer layer was encapsulated within a protective carbon shell (Sn@Void@C), which could effectively accommodate Sn’s volume expansion during the alloying period, significantly enhancing its performance in electrochemical processes and structural stability. Specifically, the Sn@Void@C anode retained a high specific capacity of 720 mAh g–1 after 400 cycles at 0.2 C and demonstrated an outstanding capacity of 520 mAh g–1 after 500 cycles at 0.5 C. This work provides a facile and effective strategy for rationally designing tin-based anodes for lithium-ion batteries.

Sn@C Composite Architecture for Improved Stability and Performance in Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes

Jiapeng Lu,Lingling Wang,Xin Min,Ya Chen,Wei Wang,Zhaohui Huang,Minghao Fang

The theoretical capacity of metallic tin (Sn) is 994 mAh g−1, making it a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The cycling performance rapidly deteriorates due to the significant volume expansion and contraction during the lithium insertion/extraction process, which is the main limiting factor for the practical application of Sn-based anode materials in LIBs. We report a new material design and fabrication method for carbon-coated Sn solid sphere anodes, using amorphous carbon as the conductive and buffering matrix to form Sn@C composite materials. The size of the composite phases can be easily controlled by varying the carbon source ratio and reduction calcination temperature. The results show that the sample with a carbon source ratio of 1:4, reduced at 600 °C, exhibits excellent electrochemical performance. At a current density of 0.2 C, the discharge capacity reaches 994 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles. At a current density of 3 C, the capacity is maintained at 318 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles. The synthesis of high-performance Sn-based anode materials through a simple and controllable method holds significant importance and value.

Chengyu Yang,Lvyin Hong,Peidian Chong,Yafeng Li,Mingdeng Wei

New tin-based metal-phosphine complexes of [Sn(OH) 4 (PPh 3 ) 2 ] and [Sn(OH) 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 ] have been successfully synthesized and used as supercapacitor electrodes for the first time, exhibiting a high specific capacitance, a good rate capability, and an excellent cycling stability. The specific capacitances (highest specific capacitance for tin-based materials) of 1204F g −1 and 764F g −1 for two samples at a current density of 1 A g −1 in 6 M KOH can respectively be achieved, and their capacitance retention remained at 95.1% and 89.2% even after 15,000 cycles at a current density of 10 A g −1 . Furthermore, a flexible quasi-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor composed of Sn(OH) 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 and activated carbon was assembled and exhibited a specific capacitance of 290.6 mF cm −2 at a current density of 1 mA cm −2 . More importantly, this device also displayed excellent cyclic stability of ∼100% for 1800 cycles during the galvanostatic charge/discharge process at 5 mF cm −2 .

Self-Supporting Sn-Based Carbon Nanofiber Anodes for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Jingjie Xie,Lan Xu

Due to its high theoretical specific capacity, abundant resources, accessibility and environmental friendliness, Sn has been considered as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) anodes. However, Sn anodes still face great challenges such as huge volume change and low conductivity. Herein, a self-supporting Sn-based carbon nanofiber anode for high-performance LIBs was prepared. Sn-based nanoparticles with high theoretical specific capacity were uniformly embedded in carbon nanofibers, which not only mitigated the volume expansion of Sn-based nanoparticles, but also obtained composite carbon nanofibers with excellent mechanical properties by adjusting the ratio of polyacrylonitrile to polyvinylpyrrolidone, exhibiting excellent electrochemical performance. The obtained optimal self-supporting Sn-based carbon nanofiber anode (Sn-SnO2/CNF-2) showed a discharge specific capacity of 607.28 mAh/g after 100 cycles at a current density of 500 mA/g. Even after 200 cycles, Sn-SnO2/CNF-2 still maintained a capacity of 543.78 mAh/g and maintained its original fiber structure well, demonstrating its good long-term cycling stability. This indicated that the self-supporting Sn-SnO2/CNF-2 anode had great potential for advanced energy storage.

Synthesis of Hollow SnO2/SnS2 Hybrids and their Application in Sodium-Ion Batteries

Ke Wang,Ying Huang,Xiulan Qin,Mingyue Wang,Xu Sun,Meng Yu

Graphical Stress relief : A facile two-step hydrothermal route is introduced to prepare hollow SnO 2 /SnS 2 hybrids. Subsequently, their electrochemical performances as anodes in Na-ion batteries are investigated. The as-prepared hollow SnO 2 /SnS 2 hybrids are composed of ultrafine SnS 2 nanosheets, which directly grow on the pre-grown hollow SnO 2 hollow spheres. In the structure, both the SnO 2 hollow structures and surrounding SnS 2 nanosheets are able to alleviate internal stress during sodiation/desodiation. Alloying-type Sn material has been considered as an excellent anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the limitation of capacity is still a challenge that remains to be solved. In this approach, we introduce a facile two-step hydrothermal route to prepare hollow SnO 2 /SnS 2 hybrids and investigate their electrochemical performances as anodes in SIBs for the first time. Benefiting from their structural features, the hollow SnO 2 /SnS 2 hybrids exhibit a high reversible sodium storage capacity of about 485.64 mA h g −1 at 300 mA g −1 after 100 cycles with a capacity retention of 78.7 %, which is much higher than 25.9 % for bare SnO 2 hollow spheres and 28.5 % for bare SnS 2 nanosheets. Taking into consideration the outstanding performance and the special structural design, this work could provide a potential strategy to improve the electrochemical performances of tin-based electrodes, as well as that of other anodes in SIBs.

Sn@Zn/Co-NPC as Anode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries via the Solvothermal Method

Liu Xinyu,Li Mingzhao,Shi Chonghua,Wang Jing,Yao Shaowei

Sodium-ion batteries are considered promising for large-scale energy storage due to their abundance. Therefore, it is crucial to develop stable anode materials with high specific capacity. SnO 2 was coated with Zn/Co-zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) by using the solvothermal method to obtain SnO 2 @Zn/Co-ZIFs. Then, Sn@Zn/Co-NPC (N-doped porous carbon) was obtained through heat treatment in an inert atmosphere. In this material, Sn provides a higher capacity, while Zn/Co-NPC not only can provide part of the capacity and increase the conductivity of the material, but also helps alleviate the volume expansion of Sn during the charge and discharge process. Therefore, the effect of the amount of Sn on the electrochemical properties of the materials was investigated by varying the addition of SnO 2 . The results show that the 50Sn@Zn/Co-NPC electrode material retains a discharge specific capacity of 334.90 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g −1 current density. After 200 cycles at 500 mA g −1 current density, 50Sn@Zn/Co-NPC electrode material still has 275.80 mAh g −1 discharge specific capacity. The 50Sn@Zn/Co-NPC electrode material has excellent electrochemical properties. Therefore, this paper provides a reference for the design of stable, long-cycle, and low-cost anode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

A Bifunctional Carbazide Additive For Durable CsSnI3 Perovskite Solar Cells

Chenghao Duan,Feilin Zou,Qiaoyun Wen,Minchao Qin,Jiong Li,Chang Chen,Xinhui Lu,Liming Ding,Keyou Yan

Inorganic CsSnI 3 with low toxicity and a narrow bandgap is a promising photovoltaic material. However, the performance of CsSnI 3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is much lower than that of Pb-based and hybrid Sn-based (e.g., CsPbX 3 and CH(NH 2 ) 2 SnX 3 ) PSCs, which may be attributed to its poor film-forming property and the deep traps induced by Sn 4+ . Here, a bifunctional additive carbazide (CBZ) is adapted to deposit a pinhole-free film and remove the deep traps via two-step annealing. The lone electrons of the  NH 2 and  CO units in CBZ can coordinate with Sn 2+ to form a dense film with large grains during the phase transition at 80 °C. The decomposition of CBZ can reduce Sn 4+ to Sn 2+ during annealing at 150 °C to remove the deep traps. Compared with the control device (4.12%), the maximum efficiency of the CsSnI 3 :CBZ PSC reaches 11.21%, which is the highest efficiency of CsSnI 3 PSC reported to date. A certified efficiency of 10.90% is obtained by an independent photovoltaic testing laboratory. In addition, the unsealed CsSnI 3 :CBZ devices maintain initial efficiencies of ≈100%, 90%, and 80% under an inert atmosphere (60 days), standard maximum power point tracking (650 h at 65 °C), and ambient air (100 h), respectively.

SnSe2/SnO2 heterostructures confined in graphene nano-ribbons for superior lithium storage performance

Wan-Jing Yu,Bochuan Deng,Tianhui An,Jing Wang,Yong Ji,Haiyan Cai,Hua Zhang,Hui Tong

Tin-based materials have been widely concerned as a competitor among various anode materials for lithium-ion battery (LIBs), due to their high theoretical capacities and relatively low lithiation potential. However, intrinsic drawbacks of poor electrical conductivity and severe volume expansion have hindered practical application of tin-based anode materials. Herein, we design and construct a novel multiphase-structure of SnSe 2 -SnO 2 confined in graphene nanoribbons (SnSe 2 -SnO 2 @GNRs) as anode materials for LIBs. The composite can deliver a specific discharge capacity of 998.0 mA h g −1 at a rate of 0.1 A g −1 . When the current density is increased to 5.0 A g −1 , the specific capacity is still maintained to be 416.0 mA h g −1 . The excellent electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the flexible and interlaced GNRs network in nanocomposite, which can not only improve the electrical conductivity of SnSe 2 -SnO 2 and alleviate its drastic volume change upon lithiation and delithiation, but also bring in abundant surface defects, which is conducive to electrochemical pseudo-capacitance energy storage. Meanwhile, the SnSe 2 -SnO 2 heterostructures can further enhance the electrochemical reaction kinetics of the anode materials and promote the anchoring of Li atoms at the interface. This opens a new pathway to synthesize Tin-based nano-structure as superior anode materials for high-performance LIBs.

Fe-doped Sn@ 3D carbon lithium-ion battery anode mesoporous material with sodium alginate as the carbon source

Yang Dongping,Xiong Deping,Feng Zuyong,Wen Kunhua,Wu Kaidan,He Miao,Feng Yefeng

Sn-based materials receive a lot of attention because of their high theoretical specific capacity, acceptable price, and good electrical conductivity. However, Sn-based materials have a large volume expansion in the circulation process, leading to the rapid decay of capacity. According to the ion diffusion time formula: t  = L2/2D, where L is the diffusion length or the particle size, and D is the diffusion constant of the ions and the electrons. It can be seen that reducing the particle size can significantly improve the multiplier performance of the material. At present, the main methods for preparing nano-sized metal/carbon composites are the high-energy ball grinding method, hydrothermal method, calcined metal, and organic matter precursor. In this paper, sodium alginate was used as a precursor system for the Fe-doped Sn @3D carbon composite material, which was applied to the lithium-ion battery anode to obtain excellent electrochemical performance (1133.5 mAhg −1 after 200 cycles at 0.2 Ag −1 ). The increase in the specific surface area of Fe-doped Sn @3D carbon also increases the charge transfer efficiency and further improves the multiplier performance of the electrode. Meanwhile, the nano-size and structure can better buffer the volume expansion and protect the structure of the electrode.
