Tin (Sn) perovskites have emerged as viable candidates for high-performance, lead-free perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). However, the limited availability of efficient and stable Sn perovskites, and the development of large-area Sn PeLEDs encourage further research. Here, FPEA 2 SnI 4 (FPEAI, 4-fluoro-phenethylammonium iodide) perovskite is reported as a potential emitter for PeLEDs. To overcome the anisotropic carrier transport in layered FPEA 2 SnI 4 perovskites, an electronic push-pull effect strategy is introduced by incorporating 6-amino-4-hydroxy-2-naphthalenesulfonic acid (γ acid) molecule in FPEA 2 SnI 4 perovskites. The unique electronically push-pull configuration of γ acid establishes a cross-layer electron transfer channel, which mitigates electron aggregation within the organic layers, enhances electron injection and directional transfer, and effectively promotes radiative recombination. Furthermore, multifunctional γ acid provides multiple interaction sites for Sn perovskites, reducing defect state density and stabilizing FPEA 2 SnI 4 perovskites. Leveraging the enhanced robustness of FPEA 2 SnI 4 films with γ acid, a large-area Sn PeLED with an active area of 2.25 cm 2 , achieves a maximum luminance ( L max ) of 371 cd m −2 , a peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 15.49%, and an operational half-lifetime of 71.6 h at 100 cd m −2 . These findings underscore the application potential of Sn PeLEDs in the realms of solid-state lighting and planar display.

To circumvent the toxicity problem of lead, looking out for lead-free perovskites with a broadband emission and associated LEDs that cover the full region of white light is the key to research in sustainable chemistry and material community. In order to improve the luminescence properties of inorganic lead-free perovskites, chemical doping engineering is utilized. We have found that yttrium plays an important role as a dopant in broadening the emission of inorganic perovskites. This work reports on white light emission in a yttrium-doped tin perovskite and the white LED synthesized with this eco-friendly phosphor. The hue of the light can be adjusted via the change in the excitation wavelength. DFT is performed to calculate the band gaps, and a good agreement with the experimental results is illustrated. The dramatic fluorescence enhancement (by a factor of about 4.5) is also revealed on the phosphor. Based on this sustainable material, a WLED is fabricated, and a full-color white light emission is realized with a CIE of (0.32, 0.33). This work not only provides us with an inorganic phosphor for white LEDs but also demonstrates the potential of the chemical doping strategy in sustainable chemistry and materials science.

Summary The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of tin perovskite solar cells is impeded by the extremely poor resistance to oxidation and high density of intrinsic Sn vacancies. Herein, we grow a 2D-quasi-2D-3D Sn perovskite film using removable pseudohalogen NH 4 SCN as a structure regulator. This hierarchy structure remarkably enhances air stability resulting from the parallel growth of 2D PEA 2 SnI 4 as the surface layer. We then explore the hierarchy structure perovskite films in planar structural solar cells, which generate a PCE up to 9.41%. The device retains 90% of its initial performance for almost 600 hr. Our results suggest that adding removable NH 4 SCN in a perovskite precursor can significantly improve the stability and photovoltaic performance of Sn perovskite. This finding provides a powerful strategy to manipulate the structure of low-dimensional perovskite in order to enhance the performance of perovskite solar cells.

Serious issues such as easy-oxidation of Sn 2+ , fast crystallization rate and high defect density are still existing in tin perovskites to restrain their photovoltaic performance. Herein, a strategy of bottom passivation by potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) has been developed in FA 0.75 MA 0.25 SnBrI 2 -based perovskite solar cells. KSCN interlayer exhibited multifunctional roles in aligning energy levels, assisting perovskite crystallization and promoting charge transport. The resulting champion device delivered superior power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 11.17% under AM 1.5G illumination. It is worth noting that the champion indoor photovoltaics efficiency under 2956 K@1062 lx (334.41 μW/cm 2 ) illumination could approach 17.57%, which is the highest PCE for tin perovskite photovoltaics to our knowledge. The outstanding indoor performance demonstrates the huge application potential of eco-friendly tin perovskites.

Despite tin perovskite showing excellent optoelectronic properties such as ideal bandgap and high carrier mobility, the intrinsic instability of tin perovskite due to the reaction with water and oxygen that significantly shadows its application. Herein, a molecule substituted with two fluorine atoms for the construction of low-dimensional tin perovskite is explored. Tin perovskite film based on this molecule shows much enhanced hydrophobicity, bringing much enhanced stability in atmosphere. The unencapsulated device can be kept over 200 h in atmospheric environment. In comparison to the instantaneous degradation of device performance for traditional 3D solar cells, no obvious degradation of device efficiency is observed under continuous operation in atmosphere without encapsulation over 10 h. Furthermore, the low-dimensional perovskite film exhibits a unique two-layer structure that can effectively passivate defects of the tin perovskite film. Accordingly, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of Sn-perovskite solar cells realizes a remarkable enhancement by a factor of 45% and yields a PCE of 8.38%. This work indicates that molecular design of low-dimensional structure is a promising approach to improve the stability of tin perovskite.

Preventing the formation of Sn-I defect pairs is of vital importance for the fabrication of stable and efficient Sn perovskite solar cells (PSCs). This has spurred intensive efforts, which leave a formidable challenge of simultaneously addressing the unfavored chemical activities of Sn 2+ and I − in Sn perovskites. Herein, we report a europium (Eu) redox-doping method that leverages the facile reactions between Eu 2+ , Sn 4+ , and I 0 in the acidic environment of perovskite solution and thus alleviates the Sn-I defect pair issue. Experimental and theoretical investigations suggest that Eu 2+ could enter Sn perovskite lattice, altering the geometric and electronic structures of [SnI 6 ] 4− octahedra. This could reduce the energy barrier for charge transfer along the inorganic framework. Sn-PSCs with Eu redox doping deliver power conversion efficiencies up to 13.66% and improved stabilities.

Controlling the crystallization dynamics of solution-processed tin perovskites remains pivotal yet challenging for achieving high-performance lead-free optoelectronic devices. Herein, it is demonstrated that substrate-regulated interfacial nucleation governs crystal growth orientation and film quality of tin perovskites. The results show that pristine PEDOT:PSS substrates induce bottom-interface-dominated nucleation via strong PEDOT + -[SnI 3 ] n n− interactions, driving rapid upward crystallization of tin perovskites and yielding rough films with low photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE: ≈26%). Strategic substrate modification with potassium citrate (PC) weakens the PEDOT + -[SnI 3 ] n n− interactions, thereby redirecting nucleation initiation to the top interface during solvent evaporation. This results in controlled downward crystallization of tin perovskites, forming smooth films with improved crystallinity and superior optoelectronic properties (PLQE: ≈41%). The optimized tin perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) achieve record-breaking performance with an external quantum efficiency of 12.8% and a maximum radiance of 190 W sr −1 m −2 , which is the highest performance reported for tin perovskite near-infrared LEDs to date. This work demonstrates interface-directed crystallization control as an effective strategy for achieving high-performance tin perovskite optoelectronic devices.

Tin perovskites have emerged as a promising alternative material to address the toxicity of lead perovskites and the low bandgap of around 1.1 eV is also compatible with tandem solar cell applications. Nevertheless, the optoelectronic performance of solution-processed tin perovskite single-crystal counterparts still lags behind because of the tin instability under ambient conditions during crystal growth and limited reductants to protect the Sn 2+ ions from oxidation. Here, the reductant engineering to grow high-quality tin perovskite single crystals under ambient conditions is studied. Oxalic acid (H 2 C 2 O 4 ) serves as an excellent reductant and sacrificial agent to protect Sn 2+ ions in methanol due to its suitable redox potential of −0.49 V, and the CO 2 as the oxidation product in the gas state can be easily separated from the solution. The FPEA 2 SnI 4 single crystal grown by this strategy exhibits low trap density perovskite surface by constructing an FPEA 2 PbI 4 -FPEA 2 SnI 4 (FPI-FSI) single crystal heterojunction for X-ray detection. An improved X-ray sensitivity of 1.7 × 10 5 µC Gy −1 cm −2 is realized in the heterojunction device, outperforming the control FPEA 2 PbI 4 counterpart.

Tin perovskite solar cells (TPSCs) are considered as a sustainable alternative to their lead-containing counterparts, offering an ideal bandgap, a more stable crystal structure, and better semiconducting properties. However, the fabrication of efficient and able TPSCs has been a challenging task. Among the main components of TPSCs, herein, we investigated the transport layers and their interface with the perovskite layer. Several microscopy techniques revealed inhomogeneity in the common hole transport layer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), and the electron transport layer (ETL), indene-C60 bisadduct (ICBA). A hydrogen-bond donor molecule d-sorbitol modified the microstructure of PEDOT:PSS, increasing its conductivity and the crystallization density of the overlying perovskite layer. Blending 1% poly(methyl methacrylate) into ICBA rendered a uniform ETL, which facilitated electron transport across its interface with tin perovskite. The photocurrent density, open-circuit voltage, and fill factor of the TPSCs were all enhanced to achieve a power conversion efficiency of 15.8% and excellent short-term stability. Our findings address an often-neglected aspect of device fabrication and provide a new approach to boosting the performance and reproducibility of TPSCs.

The crystallization dynamics of lead-tin perovskites play a critical role in determining film quality and optoelectronic performance, yet the rapid crystallization rate induced by tin incorporation complicates the nucleation and growth processes of perovskite. With a focus on understanding the role of pre-nucleation clusters (PNCs) in precursor dispersion, we herein find that the particle size of fully developed micron-scale PNCs, under non-classical nucleation theory, is closer to the critical nucleation size, thereby lowering the nucleation barrier. Compared to partially aggregated pre-nucleation clusters (PAPNCs), PNCs exhibit a uniform distribution and larger dimensions, as confirmed by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analyses, which reduce colloidal heterogeneity and bring the nanoparticle in precursor dispersion closer to the critical nucleation size. This promotes consistent nucleation, accelerates crystallization, and results in compact, pinhole-free films with enhanced crystallinity, reduced trap densities, and prolonged carrier lifetime. These improvements lead to superior near-infrared photodetector performance, achieving a detectivity of 2.54 × 10 12 Jones and a responsivity of 0.56 A/W under 940 nm NIR illumination. This work highlights the critical impact of uniformly distributed large size PNCs on tailoring crystallization dynamics and advancing the performance of perovskite-based optoelectronic devices.
