Although palladium (Pd) based materials are considered the best catalyst for formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR), they are still confronted with a lot of barriers, such as the growth/sintering of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) and the accumulation of adsorbed poisoning intermediates. Herein, tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) decorated carbon black was utilized as the catalyst carrier to synthesize Pd/SnO 2 /C for FAOR. The introduction of SnO 2 significantly reduced the particle size of Pd NPs and forming the Pd–O–Sn structure. Compared with Pd/C, Pd/SnO 2 /C owned higher concentration of O ads and less adsorption amount of poisoning intermediates. The oxygen atoms adsorbed on Pd surface were rapidly transferred to SnO 2 due to the spillover effect. The FAOR reaction kinetic results showed that the introduction of SnO 2 accelerated the diffusion rate of formic acid on the electrode surface . Pd/SnO 2 /C exhibited high specific activity (5.97 mA cm −2 ), excellent durability, and high anti-CO poisoning ability toward FAOR due to the introduction of SnO 2 .

The self-assembly of tin dioxide (SnO2) porous microspheres was conducted via a surfactant-free one step hydrothermal reaction. The crystalline structure and morphologies of the as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that the porous microspheres consist of single crystalline SnO2 octahedral nanoparticles approximately 40 nm in width and 60 nm in length, with exposed high index {221} facets. The as-prepared porous nanostructure was used as an anode material for a lithium ion battery, whose cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance, charge–discharge galvanstatic behavior and cycle performance were examined. A highly stable capacity about 690 mA g−1 after 50 cycles at a current density of 500 mA g−1 was achieved, which is much higher than that of non-assembled SnO2 octahedral nanoparticles and irregular SnO2 nanoparticles. The superior electrochemical properties result from the preferable nanostructure, with the pores favorable to the diffusion of electrolyte and providing buffer space for the volume change during alloying and dealloying reactions. Meanwhile, the special crystalline facets of the octahedral nanoparticles can facilitate Li+ ion insertion and extraction.

A hydrothermal/calcination method was successfully applied to prepare ultrafine tin dioxide (SnO2)/few-walled carbon nanotube (FWNT) composites (SnO2@FWNT). The corresponding morphological and structural information were further obtained by the characterization technique of transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In the SnO2@FWNT composites, ultrafine SnO2 nanoparticles with an average size of 2-3 nm were uniformly distributed on the FWNT with a thickness of 2-5 layers. With the synergistic effect of highly conductive FWNT and highly dispersed SnO2, the SnO2@FWNT hybrids presented excellent specific capacitance of 220.5 F g -1 at a scan rate of 2 mV s -1 under neutral environment. A power density of 30.63 kW kg -1 and an energy density of 512.79 W kg -1 were obtained, respectively. In addition, a specific capacity retention rate of 89.57% was acquired after 1000 cycles, indicating a superior stability of SnO2@FWNT hybrids. The results indicate that the SnO2@FWNT composites can be used as an alternative electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors.

The tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) nanocrystals were synthesized by direct precipitation method and a series of SnO 2 samples were obtained via calcining SnO 2 at different temperatures. The characteristics of SnO 2 samples were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The effects of calcination temperatures and additives on the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) on SnO 2 samples under UV-light irradiation have been researched. The results showed that the SnO 2 sample with low temperature-treated ( T ≤200 °C) exhibits the highest degradation efficiency, while with increasing temperature-treated (from 400 °C to 1000 °C) SnO 2 samples show decreasing degradation activities. The additives, such as methanol, sodium fluoride, Fe(III), Ag + , and terephthalic acid showed different influences on MB degradation in UV/SnO 2 systems. It has been demonstrated that in SnO 2 -MB systems both hydroxy radicals (OH ) generated on the surface of SnO 2 and photogenerated holes (h + vb ) in the valence band (VB) of SnO 2 jointly control the photo-oxidation process of MB. In SnO 2 system with increasing temperature-treated ( T ≥400 °C) the contribution of OH to MB degradation gradually decreased due to the diminution of surface-bonding hydroxyl groups (–OH) and chemisorbed water (H 2 O) molecules on the surface of SnO 2 , by comparison, the contribution of h + vb increased. The effects of Ag + and Fe(III) species on MB degradation and the formation of OH were investigated in detail and the mechanisms have been discussed. The presence of Ag + ion at low concentration promotes the degradation of MB by capturing the photogenerated electrons (e cb − ) on the surface of SnO 2 catalyst, suppressing the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. The presence of Ag + ion at high concentration observably reduces the degradation in catalyst system which the photodegradation process is controlled by OH , conversely, it intensively promotes the degradation in which the photodegradation process is controlled by h + vb . The effects of Fe(III) species on the degradation are similar to those of Ag + ions.

Pristine tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) and Au-loaded SnO 2 composite nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The phase structure, composition, and morphology of synthesized Au-loaded SnO 2 composite nanoparticles were comprehensively investigated. Furthermore, the gas sensing performance of the as-prepared pristine and Au-loaded SnO 2 gas sensors toward low concentration of hydrogen (H 2 ) were systematically evaluated. The results indicated that compared to the pristine SnO 2 gas sensor, the Au-loaded SnO 2 composite nanoparticles could not only significantly improve the gas sensing response, but also decrease the optimum working temperature. Moreover, the experimental results showed that the 4.0 at.% Au-loaded SnO 2 gas sensor exhibited the highest response (25) to 100 ppm H 2 at 250 °C, which was about five times higher than that of the pristine one. In addition, it also provided a rapid response/recovery time (1 s/3 s) and a low detection limit (1 ppb). Therefore, Au-loaded SnO 2 composite nanoparticles are more suited for hydrogen detection compared to pristine SnO 2 gas sensor.

Tin dioxide (SnO2) with a high theoretical capacity of 1494 mA h g−1 has great potential to break through the capacity limitation of the conventional graphite anode (372 mA h g−1) in lithium-ion batteries. However, its practical application still faces several obstacles such as high volumetric expansion and poor electrical conductivity. To solve these problems, innovative design and synthesis of SnO2-based nanocomposite structures are necessary. Herein, we demonstrate an integrated design of a hierarchical pitaya-like P-SnO2/C@NC core–shell nanostructure which includes the core of SnO2 nanoparticles (∼4–12 nm) uniformly embedded in the porous carbon sphere and the shell of a continuous nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) layer. Specifically, during repetitive lithiation and delithiation processes, the ultrasmall SnO2 nanoparticles reduce the internal stress greatly, the porous carbon matrix provides buffer space for a large volume change, and the N-doped carbon shell further guarantees the whole structure unit sufficient electrical conductivity and structural stability. Consequently, the resultant battery exhibits a reversible capacity of 936.8 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g−1 and even an average capacity of 460.0 mA h g−1 at a high current density of 3.2 A g−1. The excellent electrochemical performance of pitaya-like SnO2/C@NC proves the efficacy of this structure design and thus provides significant reference for the construction of other electrode materials in rechargeable alkali metal ion batteries.

Tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) is of interest as an alternative anode material for lithium ion batteries. However, the major concern is the significant volume expansion during lithiation process, resulting in poor capacity retention and rate capability. Here, a facile morphosynthesis route is adapted for the fabrication of hierarchical SnO 2 nanocrystal networks with interwoven fibers, by immersing sacrificial eggshell membrane in a Sn-based sol followed by a calcination process in air. With both structural and compositional advantages, the synthesized SnO 2 networks electrode manifests superior reversible capacities of 938, 802, 736, 636, and 506 mAh g −1 even at high current densities of 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, and 5 A g −1 , respectively. Besides, its initial Coulombic efficiency (72.6%) is also much enhanced compared with that of bare SnO 2 nanoparticles (59.6%) and commercial SnO 2 nanopowders (46.8%). The finding highlights the probable potential application of the SnO 2 networks for next-generation lithium ion batteries.

Herein, the mesoporous tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) electrode materials with large specific surface areas were simply prepared through an initial solvothermal method in a mixed solvent of glycerol, isopropanol, and de-ionized water, along with a post annealing treatment in air. The average size of SnO 2 varied from 1 μm to 0.5 μm by changing the volume ratio of glycerol to isopropanol, and the product was denoted as SnO 2 -5/35 and SnO 2 -20/20, respectively. The electrochemical tests revealed that such SnO 2 electrode materials exhibited battery-type response. The SnO 2 -5/35 delivered the greatest specific capacity of 219.3 C g −1 , higher than 200.4 C g −1 for SnO 2 -20/20 electrode. In the configuration of hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) device, the SnO 2 served as the cathode and activated carbon (AC) was utilized as the anode. The SnO 2 -5/35//AC HSC exhibited an energy density of 33.6 W h kg −1 at the power density of 946.9 W kg −1 . In contrast, the SnO 2 -20/20//AC HSC delivered an inferior specific energy of 28.5 W h kg −1 . Both HSCs showed excellent cyclic performance over 6000 cycles under a high current load of 10 A g −1 . These results indicate that the SnO 2 materials, especially SnO 2 -5/35, holds significant application potential in the field of electrochemical energy storage. Additionally, the current synthesis method can be extended to the preparation of other metal oxides with extraordinary electrochemical property for the practical applications in supercapacitors.

We report on the relationship between the degree of reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and its room-temperature methane gas-sensing response by comparing four in situ reducing agents of GO: D-glucose, sodium borohydride, L-ascorbic acid and hydrazine hydrate. We found that gas sensing based on D-glucose and L-ascorbic acid had a higher gas response than that based on sodium borohydride and hydrazine hydrate because the residues contained oxygen functional groups. The poorly conductive GO was successfully reduced in situ by L-ascorbic acid to achieve high electrical conductivity and a high methane gas response. The incorporation of tin dioxide (SnO2) into the reduced GO (RGO) further increased the gas response by the p–n junction effect. The heterostructure of L-ascorbic acid-reduced RGO–SnO2 had the highest increase in methane response due to the synergistic effect between dehydroascorbic acid and the SnO2 surface. This was inferred from density functional theory calculations with self-consistently determined Hubbard U potentials (DFT+U). Compared with the current room-temperature methane sensing and fabrication technologies, the sensing technology reported here is cheaper to produce and more environmentally friendly while retaining the best sensitivity and wider sensing range.

To overcome the issues of fast capacity fading and poor rate capacity for tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) anode materials , an effective strategy is explored to fabricate nanostructured SnO 2 @carbon composites (SnO 2 @C) with large specific surface area, abundant cavity and confined dimension, considering the peculiar nanostructure to achieve increased contact interface between the active materials and the electrolyte, restricted agglomeration of SnO 2 , buffered volume variation, enhanced structure stability, shortened diffusion distance of lithium-ion and electron and improved electronic conductivity . Herein, two kinds of hollow SnO 2 @C nanostructures, namely hollow SnO 2 @C spheres and SnO 2 @C tubes are prepared by a simple approach. Comparing with general strategies involved templates, the preparation process in our strategy is greatly simplified, and the typical and tedious respective SnO 2 coating, polysaccharides coating and template removal are avoided, instead, the three processes are achieved simultaneously. It is believed that our strategy may pave the way for facile preparation of various microstructures of hollow SnO 2 @C composites with relatively uniform size and to a wide variety of applications. More importantly, when tested as promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, both the two hollow SnO 2 @C nanostructures exhibited superior electrochemical performance due to the synergistic effect of hollow nanostructure and relatively uniform carbon coating. The SnO 2 @C tubes delivered a reversible capacity of 587.1 mAh g −1 at 200 mA g −1 after 100 cycles. More importantly, the hollow SnO 2 @C spheres delivered a reversible capacity of 612.9 mAh g −1 at 200 mA g −1 even after 300 cycles.

In this study, we proposed an effective and rational method for in situ decoration of tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) nanoparticles on single-walled carbon nanohorns (SWNHs) by using poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) as dispersing agent and stabilizer. The morphology and nanostructure of SnO 2 /SWNH composites were tested by TEM, XRD and XPS in detail. The results indicated that uniform dispersion of SnO 2 nanoparticles with mean size about 5nm on the SWNHs. The nanocomposites as electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors were tested by cyclicvoltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD). Experimental results exhibited a high specific capacitance of 180.69 F/g at 1 A/g in 1 M Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte. The SnO 2 /SWNH composites showed good cycling stability, which the retention rate of the specific capacitance was 80.72% after 1200 times of charge and discharge cycles.

Tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) is a promising electron transport material to replace traditional titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) for fabricating efficient planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, in order to realize process compatibility and larger scale device, low temperature solution processed SnO 2 is normally used, which generates numerous trap states in ETL layer and directly affects the device performance. Here, an interfacial modification strategy proposed, depositing an ultrasonic atomized ultrathin graphene quantum dots (GQDs) layer between tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) and perovskite layer. Ultrasonic atomized deposition can effectively prevent the damage of the surface chemical properties of SnO 2 by aqueous solution. Additionally, we demonstrate that the GQDs change the surface property of SnO 2 film, and optimized the charge transport capability in SnO 2 and perovskite interface. Correspondingly, we obtained a significant power conversion efficiency (PCE) improvement for CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 -based PSCs from 13.61% to 16.54% and reached a highest steady-state PCE over 16%. We believe that the interfacial modification engineering by means of ultrasonic atomizing process is a promising tactic to obtain efficient perovskite solar cells.
