The effects of nicotinic acid (NA) on the electrodeposition of Al-Mn alloy have been investigated in aluminum chloride-1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium ionic liquids (AlCl 3 -BMIC) containing 0.15 mol·L −1 MnCl 2 (AlCl 3 -BMIC-MnCl 2 ). The electrochemical behaviors of the AlCl 3 -BMIC-MnCl 2 electrolyte have been studied here using cyclic voltammetry and potentiodynamic polarization. The addition of NA obviously increased the nucleation overpotential of Al-Mn alloy and inhibited the reduction reaction of Al(III) and Mn(II). The resultant surface morphologies, composition, and roughness of the Al-Mn alloy coating were revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that these additives strongly affect the morphology, composition, roughness, and crystal structure of the Al-Mn alloy coating. With the addition of NA, the content of Mn decreased, and Al-Mn alloy coatings became more uniform and smoother. The crystal structure of Al-Mn coatings was also examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), where it was found that the phase composition of the deposits depends on the quantities of additives. For electrolyte containing little or no NA additives, the resulting alloy is amorphous structure. With NA additives up to 6·mmol L −1 , the Al-Mn coating changed into a mixture phase of amorphous and crystalline structure.

In this study, Al-Fe and Al-Fe-Mn alloy anodes are prepared and examined. The influence of impurity Fe on the microstructure and properties of Al alloy anodes is investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electrochemical testing techniques. The results reveal that the presence of impurity Fe in Al alloys significantly shifts the open-circuit potential of the Al anode towards the positive side and reduces its discharge efficiency. However, the adverse impact of impurity Fe is mitigated by alloying with Mn. Specifically, the open-circuit potential of Al-0.20%Fe-0.20%Mn anodes is observed to shift negatively by 70 mV when compared to that of Al-0.20%Fe in a 3 M KOH solution. Furthermore, the anode utilization of Al-0.20%Fe-0.20%Mn anodes, following continuous discharge at 30 mA·cm −2 and 100 mA·cm −2 for 30 min, is found to be 70% and 52% higher, respectively, than that of Al-0.20%Fe anodes. This highlights the effectiveness of Mn modification as a preferable approach to ameliorate the detrimental effects of impurity Fe.

SiMn alloy is the largest consumption product in the Mn series alloys. Manganese silicates generated during the pre-treatment procedures of manganese ores are the main ingredient for SiMn alloy production. However, conventional cognition is that manganese and silicon in the silicates are respectively reduced to Mn 7 C 3 and SiC by carbon, and then the carbides interact to form alloy. In current study, pure MnSiO 3 was synthesized firstly and then a new perspective on the interface reaction and morphology evolution for the reduction of pure MnSiO 3 were investigated via XRD, SEM, XPS and thermodynamics analyses. Interface reaction showed that the MnSiO 3 was firstly reduced to manganese carbides and SiO 2 , and then the SiO 2 was further reduced by the carbides to generate SiMn alloy. The intermediate product Mn 7 C 3 played a crucial role since the reduction of SiO 2 by newly born Mn 7 C 3 preferentially conducted than the carbon reductant. Morphology evolution of the interface between C and MnSiO 3 as well as thermodynamic calculations of Mn-Si-O and Mn-Si-C-O systems were minutely clarified in this work to clarify the reduction mechanism. In addition, decomposition of SiMn alloy to SiC ceramic at 1700 °C was an important inducement to illustrate the frangibility of industrial SiMn alloy product.

The interaction mechanism of the multi-element oxide electrodes remains a challenge, despite the fact that their synergy can not only improve the electronic structure, but also broaden the working potential window to some extent. Herein, the simple NiMn alloy system was taken up as a model to investigate the origin of the wide voltage window. Compared with conventional electrodes, this sandwich-type nanoporous-NiO(MnOx)@Ni electrode derived from a NiMn alloy could exhibit a wide working potential window of 1.5 V in aqueous electrolyte. The facilitated successive redox reactions between NiO and MnOx throughout the entire potential window strongly promote the capacitance extension without water decomposition, despite the fact that the cycling lifespan was limited by chemical dissolution of MnOx. The assembled quasi-solid-state supercapacitor can overcome the irreversible conversion and exhibit a remarkable lifespan of 5000 cycles at 10 A cm−3 (91% retention) and high energy density (37.67 mW h cm−3 at 0.2 A cm−3). This work provides new perceptions for the design of multi-element collaborative energy storage electrodes.

Alkaline zinc–manganese batteries are the most used disposable batteries in the world and cannot be recharged. Spent alkaline zinc–manganese batteries are mainly disposed of in landfills, and the resulting enrichment of the soil with potassium(K), zinc(Zn), and manganese(Mn) pollutes the groundwater and wastes valuable resources. Herein, a process for the treatment of used alkaline zinc(Zn)–manganese(Mn) batteries that involved water leaching, calcination, and vacuum aluminothermic reduction was developed. Investigation of the elemental migration process and reaction mechanism showed that the purity of potassium carbonate(K 2 CO 3 ) reached 99 % with 92.1 % recovery at a water leaching temperature of 60 °C and time of 25 min. The leaching slag was calcined at 700 °C for 1 h to obtain calcined slag with zinc oxide (ZnO), manganese(III) oxide (Mn 2 O 3 ), and manganese(II) oxide (MnO) as the main phases. When the calcined slag was reduced with aluminum powder, the recovery rate of Zn reached 99.7 % at a reduction temperature of 1100 °C, reduction time of 2 h, and ratio of aluminum powder to calcined slag of 1.5:1. Under these conditions, Mn was recovered in the form of Al 6 Mn alloy, and the main phase of the remaining reduced slag was alumina. In this study, potassium and metallic zinc were separated and recovered, and at the same time, an aluminum(Al)–manganese(Mn) alloy was prepared. The developed environmentally friendly and emission-free process enables the efficient recycling of the valuable resources K, Zn, and Mn, resulting in cleaner battery disposal.
