The long-term accumulation of manganese sulfate residues can lead to the release of soluble manganese ions, thereby contaminating the surrounding environment. Although numerous methods exist to address the issue of soluble manganese ions, current harmless treatment approaches fail to consider the subsequent utilization of manganese slag. This study aims to control the magnetic properties of processed residues by adjusting the addition of barium hydroxide and the reaction duration. Our results reveal that the harmless treatment of manganese sulfate slag is achievable with various amounts of barium hydroxide, and the magnetic properties of the reconstructed slag increase with the increased barium hydroxide dosage. Magnetic separation is employed to separate the magnetic components from the reconstructed slag, and the distribution state of these magnetic substance is modulated by altering the particle size and reagent addition. Under optimal conditions, this study finds that the grade of iron was 24.17 %, the grade of manganese was 8.08 %, and the recovery could reach 79 % for iron and 70 % for manganese. Finally, the fining slag obtained by magnetic separation was utilized as an additive in the preparation of ferrites, reducing the minimum reflection loss of the ferrites to −16.18 dB, signifying up to 90 % electromagnetic wave attenuation. These findings indicate that the fining slags holds great potential as a dopant for ferrites, offering a viable pathway for the resourceful and environmentally friendly treatment of manganese sulfate residues.

With the retirement of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) entering peak period, the recycling of LiCoO 2 has become a hot topic. The spent LiCoO 2 batteries are rich in carcinogenic metal Co and high-value metal Li, so they are needed to be recovered in time before causing serious environmental pollution and resource waste. Thus, a clean and efficient process is proposed for the comprehensive recovery of Li, Co, and Mn from the spent LiCoO 2 cathode material. It is an integrated pyro-hydrometallurgical process, mainly consisting of sulfation roasting with NH 4 HSO 4 and selective sulfurizing leaching with (NH 4 ) 2 S solution. Using low melting point ammonium salt as roasting auxiliary, 99.7 %, 99.1 %, and 99.8 % of Li, Co, and Mn in the spent LiCoO 2 powder can be converted into sulfate when roasting under 400 ℃ for 75 min. Then 99.5 % of Li in the sulfation roasting product can be selectively leached with an aqueous (NH 4 ) 2 S solution, which is also a precipitator for Co, Mn, and impurity Al. In addition, 96.4 % of Co and 96.0 % of Mn in the sulfurized precipitate can be separated with impurity elements Al and C via oxidation roasting–water leaching process. Compared to traditional recycling, this method can achieve a higher Li leaching rate at a low roasting temperature, and the recovery of Co and Mn can be realized without adding any acid/base reagents or impurity cations. More importantly, the circulation of NH 3 /NH 4 + and S element in the recycling system has been taken into account, making it an environmental-friendly and economical process. In this study, the sulfation reduction roasting and selective sulfurizing leaching mechanisms were both revealed in details, and the behavior of the valuable elements was also elucidated.

Although hydrometallurgy is the primary method for recycling spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), handling the waste liquid produced during the leaching process remains a challenge due to the additional procedures and costs involved. This study presents an efficient, closed-loop recycling process for spent LiMn 2 O 4 (LMO) batteries. The waste LMO powders were initially leached with H 3 PO 4 and citric acid (CA) to obtain the leachate containing Li + , Mn 2+ , PO 4 3− and citrate ions. The metal ions leached into the solution are complexed by CA, achieving complete leaching of LMO. The H 3 PO 4 and CA provide both PO 4 3− and carbon sources for subsequent product preparation, minimizing resource waste and secondary pollution. The molar ratio of Li:Mn:Fe:PO 4 3− in the leachate was adjusted to 1:0.75:0.25:1, and LiMn 0.75 Fe 0.25 PO 4 (LMFP) with excellent performance was regenerated by spray drying and calcination. The regenerated LMFP-650 exhibited a capacity retention rate of 89.7% after 500 cycles, significantly improving the structural stability and cycling performance of LMO. This green, closed-loop recycling process prevents secondary pollution and promotes the sustainable development of the battery industry.

Carbothermal reduction followed by magnetic separation has been recognized as an effective recovery strategy to achieve separation of Mn and Fe from ferruginous manganese ores (Fe-Mn ores). However, it is difficult to improve the recovery of manganese more than 85% by changing carbothermic roasting reduction and magnetic separation. This work clarified the underlying reason for the poor separation with the magnetic separation process and proposed a promising process for the recovery of Fe and Mn from Fe-Mn ore. The effect of operating variables on recovery and separation of Mn and Fe from Fe-Mn ore is initially investigated during the carbothermic reduction roasting process followed by magnetic separation to reveal the underlying reason for the poor separation from Fe-Mn ores. Then, the stepwise reduction behaviors of the MnO-Fe 2 O 3 and MnO-Fe 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 systems were investigated to clarify that the formation of composite oxide Mn 1−x Fe x O (0 < x < 0.497) and hercynite (FeO·Al 2 O 3 ) directly caused the poor separation of Fe and Mn from high-alumina Fe-Mn ores. Then, the stepwise reduction roasting behaviors of Mn 1−x Fe x O and FeO·Al 2 O 3 were investigated by XRD, SEM-EDS and XPS analysis. After adjusting the experimental parameters, iron-rich products with a Fe recovery of 94.31% and a grade of 85.21% and manganese-rich product with a Mn recovery of 90.05% and a grade of 54.35% are obtained. The mass ratio of Mn/Fe increased to 8.5 in the manganese-rich product.
