Inorganic ion-exchange materials show potential application for toxic radioactive ions due to their remarkable high efficiency and selectivity features. Here, two type of carbon-supported titanate (C@TNFs and C@TNFs(H)) nanofibers have been synthesized by a cost-effective in suit growth method. The resulting C@TNFs and C@TNFs(H) microspheres present uniform flower-like morphology and large surface area. The interlayer Na + in the titanate shell provides docking sites for ion-exchange of radioactive ions (U(VI), Ba(II), and Sr(II)). Interestingly, the exceeding theoretical cation-exchange capacities (CECs) are achieved on C@TNFs for U(VI) ∼4.76 meq g −1 and Ba(II) ∼2.65 meq g −1 and C@TNFs(H) for Ba(II) ∼2.53 meq g −1 and Sr(II) ∼2.24 meq g −1 , respectively. The impressive adsorption performance is mainly attributed to the synergistic effects of ion-exchange and surface complexation. More significantly, C@TNFs and C@TNFs(H) maintain high distribution coefficients ( K
d
U ) of >104 mL g −1 over a wider pH range (pH = 3.5–9.0) and high adsorption rate with short equilibrium time within 50 min. Competitive ion-exchange investigation shows a selectivity order of U(VI) > Ba(II) > Sr(II) at individual 10 ppm concentration, pH = 6.0 and T = 298 K. The related spectroscopic studies reveal the intercalative mechanism of radionuclides in the deformed titanate structure, as a result of target ions firmly trapped in the interlayer of C@TNFs and C@TNFs(H). These advantageous features allow the C@TNFs and C@TNFs(H) to be promising candidates for the remediation of toxic radioactive ions polluted water.

As a new carbon-based membrane material used for ionic and molecular sieving, the graphene oxide (GO) membrane also has potential application in radiochemical separation. In this work, the permeation performances of some typical metallic elements in high level-liquid waste (HLLW) through the ionic sieving 5-μm-thick GO membranes were investigated. It was found that the permeation rates of ions through GO membranes markedly decreased with the increase of hydrated ionic radii. Cs(I) and Sr(II) permeated through GO membranes quickly, whereas lanthanide ions and actinide ions infiltrated much more slowly, thus providing the feasibility of separation according to the difference of hydrated ionic radii. Moreover, the concentrations of initial metal ions and acidity in feed solutions also had influences on the permeation of ions through GO membranes, and higher initial metal ions and feed solution acidity were favorable to the removal of Cs(I) and Sr(II). The barrier separation test indicated that GO membranes had promising ability for the separation of Cs(I) and Sr(II) from lanthanide and actinide ions due to the difference of hydrated ion radius, and the separation factor of Cs(I)/U(VI) and Sr(II)/U(VI) would reach about 10 and 3 in single penetration. The presented results demonstrated that the membrane separation based on GO membrane would be a promising candidate for the removal of Cs(I) and Sr(II) from HLLW.

Recovery of multiple radionuclides from radioactive effluents is extremely important for either environmental protection or sustainable development of nuclear energy. In this work, we report a strategy of simultaneously selective removal of uranium(VI) and strontium(II) from simulative highly saline low level radioactive effluents employing co-imprinting method. Specifically, a novel aerogel (U/Sr-IP) is imprinted with uranium(VI) and strontium(II) from biogenic dopamine and sodium alginate. The aerogel shows better selectivity for uranium(VI) and strontium(II) against other cations compared with non-imprinted polymer. The maximum adsorption capacities are calculated from Langmuir models to be 317 and 160 mg/g for uranium(VI) and strontium(II), respectively. Simultaneously selective adsorption of uranium(VI) and strontium(II) saves the time and space in dealing with complex radioactive wastewater. Noteworthily, when the concentration of sodium chloride (1 mol/L) is five times than that of radioactive effluents, 83% of the adsorption capacity is maintained even after 5 recycles. After the adsorption, uranium(VI) and strontium(II) are eluted by Ca(NO 3 ) 2 and Na 2 CO 3 successively, which makes the aerogel more practical by sequential elution. The prepared U/Sr-IP is an efficient and competitive adsorbent in harsh environment, displaying a promising application in removal of radionuclides from highly saline low level radioactive effluents. This work demonstrates a concept of simultaneously selective adsorption of two or more radionuclides for the first time.

Organo-montmorillonites (organo-Mts) were prepared by grafting with 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES), and surface modification which was composed of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HDTMAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solutions. XRD, BET, FTIR, SEM and Zeta potential analysis were used to characterize the surface and structure properties of the as-obtained products. The XRD and FTIR results showed that APTES was successfully grafted to calcium-saturated montmorillonite (Ca-Mt) and the BET data illustrated that the surface area and microporous volume decreased largely after modification, while the pore diameter increased. Moreover, batch experiments were conducted to investigate the adsorption behavior of Sr(II) on organo-Mts. The experimental results showed that the adsorption capacity of APTES-Mt was 65.6 mg/g, much larger than those of Ca-Mt, SDS-Mt and HDTMAB-Mt (13.23 mg/g, 26.85 mg/g and 3.91 mg/g, respectively) under the chosen conditions. Pseudo-second-order model fitted well with the adsorption kinetic studies for all materials with an equilibrium time of 24 h. Further, the isotherm adsorption could be described well with both Langmuir and DKR models for SDS-Mt, Freundlich model for Ca-Mt and APTES-Mt as well. The Sr(II) removal by Ca-Mt was mainly ion exchange, nevertheless, that by SDS-Mt and APTES-Mt were surface adsorption and ligand adsorption, respectively.

The need for high-performance and novel technologies for selective treatment of radionuclides in water has recently stimulated broad research. In this study, we examined the ability of carbon nanotube (CNT) membranes in selective removal of strontium (Sr 2+ ) and cesium (Cs + ) from water and wastewater. In single-metal systems that contained only Sr 2+ , Cs + or their competitive metal ions, the distribution coefficients ( K d ) of functionalized CNT membranes for divalent cations, i.e., Sr 2+ , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ , were measured as 4.41 mmol g −1 , 2.14 mmol g −1 , and 1.30 mmol g −1 , respectively, and those for monovalent cations, i.e., Cs + , K + and Na + , were 0.81 mmol g −1 , 0.79 mmol g −1 , and 0.81 mmol g −1 , respectively. When Cs + or Sr 2+ co-existed with a competing cation, both pristine and functionalized CNT membranes showed excellent selectivity to Sr 2+ over Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ while their selectivity to Cs + over K + and Na + diminished. Moreover, the CNT membranes remained their selectivity for Sr 2+ in a wastewater effluent despite the complex water composition. Overall, the selectivity sequence of the CNT membranes for divalent cations support the occurrence of inner-sphere complexation on CNT surfaces, while that for the monovalent cations was probably determined by electrostatic interactions. This study demonstrates that Ar/O 2 plasma treatment is a greener technology for the production of CNT functionalized membranes for selective removal of contaminants from water to achieve “fit-for-purpose” treatment.

A non‑aqueous separation strategy that combines acetonitrile (ACN) with 1, 3‑propanediol (PDO) is presented for the 90 yttrium(III)/ 90 strontium(II) (Y(III)/Sr(II)) separation. In an initial dissolution step, the ACN-PDO mixture displays a pronounced solubility contrast between Y nitrate (1.22 g/100 g) and Sr nitrate (0.09 g/100 g), enabling the selective dissolution of trace Y(III) while Sr(II) remains largely undissolved. Furthermore, ACN-PDO mixture also exhibits favorable physicochemical properties, e.g., relatively low viscosity (about 40 mPa·s), a suitable density difference (0.25 g/cm 3 ) from n -octane, and lower miscibility with n -octane, for constituting an extraction system with N,N,N’,N’ tetra-octyl-3-oxopentanediamide in n -octane, in which both Y(III) extraction efficiencies and separation factors greatly exceed those of aqueous-based extraction systems. Density functional theory calculations also confirmed that the Y/Sr separation is more favorable in ACN-PDO/ n -octane systems compared to water/ n -octane systems due to differences in solvation effects and contact ion pairs. A practice integrated separation process achieved a Y(III) recovery of >90 % with product purity exceeding 99 %. The overall decontamination factor (>460,000) is markedly higher than the values reported for existing aqueous‑based methods.

Radioactive strontium (Sr 2+ ) and cobalt (Co 2+ ) in nuclear wastewater pose significant environmental risks, leading the need of developing effective remediation strategies. In this study, a poly (triazine imide) (PTI) composite intercalated with bromide (Br − ), referred to as PTI/LiBr, synthesized via a molten salt method, is introduced as a novel adsorbent for the removals of Sr 2+ and Co 2+ . PTI/LiBr composite exhibited rapid adsorption and high efficiency for both radionuclides, driven by electrostatic interactions and partial exchange of Li + ions. The removal efficiency for Sr 2+ and Co 2+ exceeded 95 % within 30 min. Adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model, while isotherm analysis indicated that Sr 2+ adsorption aligned with the Freundlich model and Co 2+ adsorption followed the Langmuir model. The adsorption process was confirmed to be spontaneous and endothermic. The γ-radiation tolerance tests verified the structural stability and high adsorption efficiency of the material under ionizing radiation conditions. Additionally, DFT-based wave function and charge density analyses showed a stronger and more stable interaction between PTI/LiBr and Co 2+ compared to Sr 2+ , which might be driven by favorable magnetic interactions and significant charge transfer. This study highlights the potential of PTI/LiBr as a robust and efficient adsorbent for mitigating radioactive pollutants in complex aqueous environments.
