Matrix proteins play critical roles in regulating the prismatic and nacreous layer formation in the shell. However, due to the dearth of in vivo experiments, their specific roles during shell formation are still unclear. In this study, a new method to detect the content of Sr in the nacreous layer (DCSr-NL), which can semiquantitatively measure the nacreous growth rate, has been proposed. In vitro experiments show that during in vitro crystallization, the Sr element can replace Ca partially, resulting in isomorphism. In vivo experiments show that the best labeling conditions are when the Sr/Ca in seawater is 0.3, at 24 °C, and at 4 days of culture. Although a surface morphological difference in the inner layer of nacre is seldom detected by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), knockdown of the classical gene nacrein or unknown gene NU9, combined with DCSr-NL, shows that both significantly decrease the nacreous layer formation rate. The knockdown of the classical gene Pif177 or unknown genes NU3 or MRPN affects the surface morphology and decreases the nacreous layer formation rate. In general, thanks to DCSr-NL, we can efficiently analyze the growth rate of the nacre with or without morphological changes by SEM, and it is of considerable significance for exploring the target gene’s function in forming the nacre in vivo.

(Eu 2+ , Dy 3+ )-co-doped strontium/calcium aluminate phosphor as one of color-tunable emission materials was synthesized via solid-state reactions at 1300 °C for 3 h. Effect of strontium/calcium ratio on the crystal structure, particle size/morphology as well as photo- and mechano-luminescent properties of the phosphors was investigated by X-ray diffraction, Rietveld method, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and spectrophotometry . The mechano-luminescent properties were measured by two mechanical stress instruments (i.e., impact and compression), respectively. The results reveal that a mixed phase with SrAl 2 O 4 and CaAl 2 O 4 has a monoclinic structure with a space group P2 1 for Sr x Ca 1-x Al 2 O 4 : 0.001Eu 2+ , 0.001Dy 3+ phosphor (x = 0.2–0.8), resulting in the change of crystallographic parameters due to different calcium/strontium ratios. According to the results of photo- and mechano-luminescent characterizations, SrAl 2 O 4 : 0.001Eu 2+ , 0.001Dy 3+ phosphor (x = 1.0) has a superior mechano-luminescent property rather than CaAl 2 O 4 : 0.001Eu 2+ , 0.001Dy 3+ phosphor (x = 0), although they both have photo-luminescent properties. Furthermore, the CEI diagram indicates that the emission color of the phosphor can be tuned from blue to bluish white and eventually to green, and the mechano-luminescent peak appears and becomes intense as Sr 2+ ions substitute for Ca 2+ ions in the phosphor gradually. In addition, the photo- and mechano-luminescent mechanisms of phosphor were also discussed.

Perovskite manganese oxides have recently attracted significant interest due to the strong coupling between their charge, orbital, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom. These materials exhibit prominent anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR), positioning them as potential candidates for magnetic sensors technologies. However, their low AMR values under moderate magnetic fields remain a challenge for practical implementation. In this work, we enhanced AMR performance by optimizing the lattice structure through A-sites ionic ratio adjustments. La 0.7– x Sm x Ca 0.3 MnO 3 ( x = 0.0–0.06) was synthesized using a non-aqueous sol-gel method, with Sm 3+ and Sm 2+ substituting La 3+ and Ca 2+ , inducing significant lattice modulation. Structural analysis revealed that the Jahn-Teller distortion reached its peak at x = 0.02, achieving an AMR value of 43 %, the highest reported so far. Magnetic measurements showed that higher Sm doping weakened the double-exchange interaction, leading to a decrease in curie temperature and ferromagnetic phase fraction. This study offers an effective strategy for improving AMR performance in perovskite materials under moderate magnetic fields, enabling their practical use in magnetic sensing devices.

The electrical and magnetic properties of strongly correlated manganese oxides originate from and depend on the coupling of spin, orbital, lattice and other degrees of freedom, and can also be controlled by external stimuli (such as a magnetic field). Here, the films have been prepared using spin-coating method to determine the role of Jahn–Teller (JT) distortion and double exchange (DE) interaction in electronic transport and magnetoresistance (MR) by magnetic field in La 0 . 7 − x Sm x Ca 0 . 3 MnO 3 /SrTiO 3 (001). The Sm-induced lattice distortion suppresses the metal-insulator transition temperature and increases the films’ resistivity, which is due to the weakening of the DE interaction between Mn 3 + –O 2 − –Mn 4 + ions and the enhancement of the single electron bandwidth. Moreover, the MR can be increased to 96.5% and the AMR can be increased to 66.6% under 1 T magnetic field. These findings indicate the importance of JT distortion in multi-field control of hole-doped perovskite manganites.
