Magnesium hydride is considered to be one of the most desirable hydrogen storage materials due to its high weight capacity (7.6 wt% H2) and low price. However, its relatively high operating temperatures and slow dynamics have always hampered its commercial applications. In this paper, nano-nickel particle coated nitrogen-doped carbon spheres (Ni@NCS) were synthesized by a chemical reduction method and then introduced into Mg to form an MgH2–Ni@NCS composite via hydriding combustion and subsequent high-energy ball milling processes. The results showed that the MgH2–Ni@NCS composite possessed high hydrogen storage capacity and fast absorbing/desorbing kinetics, absorbing 5.7 wt% H2 and desorbing 4.3 wt% H2 within 8 min at 623 K. Moreover, the capacity shows negligible degradation after 10 cycles, indicating that the MgH2–Ni@NCS composite has good cycling stability. Even at relatively low temperature (373 K), the MgH2–Ni@NCS composite still absorbed 4.2 wt% H2 within 60 min compared to 0.9 wt% H2 for milled MgH2. The improvement in hydrogen storage properties is ascribed to the in situ formed Mg2NiH4 induced dehydrogenation of MgH2 and effective prevention of the agglomeration of magnesium during the hydriding/dehydriding reaction by the carbon material.

With rising energy demand for energy and the deterioration of the environment, the search for finding a sustainable energy material is crucial. Hydrogen energy has been widely recognized as a clean energy source, and magnesium-based hydrogen storage material (MgH 2 ) is a material with great potential, but some of its properties limit its practical application. In this study, we prepared flower-shaped niobium nitride (NbN) and 2D titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 ). Subsequently, the two materials were compounded to yield a NbN@Ti 3 C 2 composite material. Because of the synergistic effect of NbN and multivalent Ti as a catalytic pair, the addition of 7 wt% NbN@Ti 3 C 2 significantly reduced the dehydrogenation temperature of MgH 2 from 305 °C to 185 °C. Under isothermal dehydrogenation at 300 °C, 5.9 wt% of H 2 was dissociated within 180 s. The dehydrogenation activation energy was measured to be 44.82 ± 2.57 kJ/mol, considerably lower than that of ball-milled MgH 2 (126.04 ± 3.65 kJ/mol), representing a relative reduction of 64.4 %. The presence of carbon effectively avoids the reunification phenomenon during the cyclic testing; thus, the MgH 2 -7 wt% NbN@Ti 3 C 2 composite material maintained an effective H 2 capacity of approximately 95.5 % after 50 cycles at 300 °C, substantially enhancing the cyclic stability of MgH 2 .

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) stands out as a promising solid-state material for high-density hydrogen storage , offering enormous potential for applications in hydrogen transportation and storage. However, the stable thermodynamics and sluggish kinetics of dehydrogenation/hydrogenation of MgH 2 impede its practical use in on-board hydrogen storage. In this study, the nanocomposite of nickel/manganese oxide (Ni/MnO) was successfully synthesized through the hydrogenation of nickel-manganese two-dimensional layered double hydroxide (NiMn-LDH) and then introduced into MgH 2 by ball milling to form BM-MgH 2 -Ni/MnO composite. Notably, BM-MgH 2 -Ni/MnO-10 displayed excellent hydrogen absorption/dehydrogenation properties. For example, its onset hydrogen release temperature was remarkably reduced to 175.6 °C, 84 °C lower than that of BM-MgH 2 . At a temperature of 250 °C, it could desorb about 6.2 wt% of H 2 within 60 min. The fully dehydrogenated product could absorb 5.5 wt% of H 2 within 10 min at 150 °C. Moreover, BM-MgH 2 -Ni/MnO-10 exhibited excellent cycling performance. Throughout the cycling process, the in-situ formation of Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 and metal Mn was detected, leading to a synergistic effect that significantly enhanced the hydrogen storage capability of MgH 2 . This study presents innovative concepts for designing active catalysts to enhance the kinetics of de-/hydrogenation reactions of MgH 2 .

Magnesium-based hydrogen storage materials, such as MgH 2 , have attracted considerable attention because of its superior hydrogen storage capacities, inexpensive, and excellent reversibility. However, their high thermodynamic stabilities and slow kinetics lead to relatively high desorption temperatures, which severely limit the wide application of MgH 2 . In this study, the inclusion of vanadium induced the formation Ni-Co metal–organic frameworks (MOF) from a NiCo layered double hydroxide (LDH), thereby increasing the number of defects and vacancies, and improving the hydrogen storage properties of MgH 2 . The synthesized NiCo-MOF/V-O-doped MgH 2 system demonstrates excellent hydrogen storage capacity. More specifically, 5 wt.% of H 2 was released over 20 min at a relatively low dehydrogenation temperature of 250 °C, and almost complete dehydrogenation was achieved at 300 °C for 5 min. In addition, at 125 °C, the hydrogen storage material absorbed 5.5 wt.% H 2 in 10 min. Furthermore, the activation energy of dehydrogenation was determined to be 69.588 ± 6.302 kJ ·mol −1 which is significantly lower than that of the ball-milled MgH 2 (i.e., 118.649 ± 2.825 kJ ·mol −1 ). It was therefore inferred that during dehydrogenation process, a Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 hydrogen pump is formed by Ni, while the V-H and Co-H bonds formed by Co and V during the reaction act synergistically to catalyze the absorption and desorption of hydrogen, thereby increasing the hydrogen storage capacity of MgH 2 . These experiments provide new perspectives on the commercial application of MgH 2 .

Transition metals are the traditional catalysts to improve the hydrogen storage performance of Mg. In the present article, the multi-valence Co catalyst (Co@CNTs) is prepared to improve the kinetics of Mg. The dehydrogenation temperature decreases, and desorption kinetics of MgH 2 is significantly enhanced by the addition of the catalyst. The dehydrogenation of MgH 2 –Co@CNTs composite is a random bulk nucleation/surface and three-dimensional growth with constant interface velocity reaction. Although the dehydrogenation activation energy of MgH 2 –Co@CNTs composite is reduced, the enthalpy change and entropy change of the composite are similar to the raw MgH 2 , which means the dehydrogenation is mainly dissociation of MgH 2 . Besides, the cycle performance of MgH 2 –Co@CNTs composite is stable. The damping of the performance for the composite is negligible after 50 cycles, which benefits from the in-site formed Co 3 MgC 0.5 in the composite. The Co 3 MgC 0.5 can act as a ‘hydrogen pump’ to adjust the hydrogen storage performance of Mg. Theoretical studies show that multi-valence Co can trap H 2 molecules and weaken their σ-bonds. In the first cycle, the bridging effect of Co plays an important role in the improvement of H 2 dissociation and release. In the subsequent cycles, Co 6 C 1 becomes the active site to assist the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of the composite.

The Mg-based hydrogen storage alloy with multiple platforms is successfully prepared by ball milling Co powder and Mg-RE-Ni precursor alloy, and its hydrogen storage behavior was investigated in detail by XRD , EDS , TEM, PCI , and DSC methods. The ball-milled alloy consists of the main phase Mg, the catalytic phases Mg 2 Ni, Mg 2 Co as well as a small amount of Mg 12 Ce, and convert into the MgH 2 –CeH 2.73 -Mg 2 NiH 4 –Mg 2 CoH 5 composite after hydrogenation. The composite has three PCI platforms corresponding to the reversible de/hydrogenation reaction of Mg/MgH 2 , Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 and Mg 6 Co 2 H 11 /Mg 2 CoH 5 . Among them, the transformation between Mg 2 Ni and Mg 2 NiH 4 triggers the “spill-over” effect which promote the decomposition of MgH 2 phases and enhances the hydrogen desorption kinetics. Meanwhile, the conversion of the Mg 6 Co 2 H 11 to Mg 2 CoH 5 phase induces the “chain reaction” effect, which leads to preferential nucleation of Mg phase and improves the hydrogen absorption kinetics. Therefore, the Mg-RE-Ni-Co alloy has a double improvement on hydrogen absorption and desorption kinetics. Concretely, the alloy has an optimal hydrogen absorption temperature of 200 °C, at which it can absorb 5.5 wt. % H 2 within 40 s. Under the conditions, the capacity of absorption almost reaches the maximum reversible value (about 5.6 wt. %). Besides, the alloy has a dehydrogenation activation energy of 67.9 kJ/mol and can desorb 5.0 wt. % H 2 within 60 min at the temperature of 260 °C.

Magnesium-based solid hydrogen storage technology is anticipated to enhance the extensive utilization of hydrogen energy due to its secure and reversible hydrogen storage characteristics. Nonetheless, the intrinsic high Mg–H bond energy and surface dissociation energy of MgH 2 result in severe operating conditions and reduced efficiency. This work proposes a NiFe/CoFe nanocatalyst exhibiting a dual-site multichannel effect, which is incorporated into MgH 2 for surface catalysis using a brief high-energy ball milling technique. The surface-catalyzed composites can release over 90 % of the potential hydrogen storage capacity with a single activation. The MgH 2 -10 wt%NiFe/CoFe composite can absorb 4.88 wt% of H 2 at 150 °C. The release peak temperature of H 2 of MgH 2 -5wt.%NiFe/CoFe was markedly decreased to 281.01 °C, representing a reduction of 162.6 °C relative to ball milled state MgH 2 (BM-MgH 2 ). The Ea for dehydrogenation was markedly decreased to 71 kJ/mol, attributed to the dual-site adsorption of NiFe/CoFe catalysts and the multi-channel diffusion within the multiphase system. These factors facilitate the absorption and dissociation of H-atoms, thereby enhancing the kinetic properties of MgH 2 . This study provides valuable insights for designing multicomponent composite metal nano-catalysts and the advancement of MgH 2 hydrogen storage composites.

Mg/MgH 2 as a thermochemical energy storage (TCES) material suffers from a slow hydrogenation-dehydrogenation kinetic and poor reversibility. Addition of metal oxide is an effective way to improve the kinetic properties of Mg/MgH 2 . However, there is little study on the effects of complex oxides . Thus, the catalytic effects of complex metal oxides and its catalytic mechanism were investigated in this paper. Results show that the dehydrogenation peak temperature and apparent activation energy of MgH 2 -Ta 2 O 5 are 320.8 °C and 128.54 kJ/mol. Combined with complex metal oxide, MgH 2 -Ta 2 O 5 -Nd 2 O 3 could further reduce the dehydrogenation peak temperature (307.2 °C) and apparent activation energy (95.33 kJ/mol). MgO and NdH 2.61 are found in the dehydrogenated MgH 2 -Ta 2 O 5 -Nd 2 O 3 , indicating that n-typed oxide Ta 2 O 5 and p-typed oxide Nd 2 O 3 are formed and improved the kinetics properties of MgH 2 . Furthermore, Nd 2 O 3 /Ta 2 O 5 interface is formed and acted as “p-n junction”. When heating, the “p-n junction” is exposed to thermal radiation and produce electrons and holes, and then the kinetics properties of MgH 2 are further enhanced.

The Li–Mg–N–H (Mg(NH 2 ) 2 –2LiH) system, as a high-capacity Mg-based metal hydrogen storage material (5.6 wt%), has broad prospects for in vehicle hydrogen storage applications, but it still has high hydrogen ab/desorption barriers. To improve its hydrogen storage performance, a nanohydrogen storage alloy was innovatively combined with Mg(NH 2 ) 2 –2LiH, AB5 type nanohydrogen storage alloy LaNi 5 was prepared by co-precipitation method. Nano LaNi 5 and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were co-doped into the Mg(NH 2 ) 2 –2LiH system at a ratio of 10 wt% and 2 wt%, significantly enhancing the hydrogen storage performance of Mg(NH 2 ) 2 –2LiH. The initial hydrogen ab/desorption temperatures of the co-doped system decreased from 110/130 °C to 45/85 °C. The release of by-product ammonia is significantly inhibited. 4.73 wt% H 2 can be ab/desorption in 150 min at 180/170 °C. Cycle tests show that the co-doped system can still maintain a hydrogen storage capacity of 4.75 wt% after ten hydrogen release cycles. Mechanism and density functional theory study have shown that during the hydrogen release process, partially hydrogenated LaNi 5 weakens the chemical bonding in Mg(NH 2 ) 2 , promoted the dissociation of hydrogen from the Mg(NH 2 ) 2 –2LiH system, while playing a dual role of "hydrogen overflow" and "hydrogen pump". SWCNTs act as auxiliary agents, helping to refine particle size and increase thermal conductivity. The synergistic effect of the two optimizes the comprehensive hydrogen storage performance of Mg(NH 2 ) 2 –2LiH. This study provides a new research method for improving the comprehensive hydrogen storage performance of Mg-based metal hydrogen storage materials using rare earth element catalysts.
