Although Mg alloy-based hydrides have been considered as promising solid-state materials due to their high capacity and low cost, the high dehydrogenation temperature of ∼ 300℃ severely limited their practical application. Herein, a series of Mg-based quaternary alloys of Mg 85 Ni 5 Cu 5 M 5 (M = Al, Zn, Co, La) hydrides were prepared by a combination of meltspinning and ball milling process, demonstrating an efficient approach to promoting the hydrogen storage properties. Among them, the Mg 85 Ni 5 Cu 5 La 5 hydride (H-Mg 85 Ni 5 Cu 5 La 5 ) as the most excellent one starts to release hydrogen from 175℃, 125℃ lower than that of MgH 2 . Especially, the peak hydrogen release temperature of H-Mg 85 Ni 5 Cu 5 La 5 was remarkedly reduced from 347℃ to 253℃, compared with MgH 2 . Additionally, the H-Mg 85 Ni 5 Cu 5 La 5 presented an impressive initial hydrogen capacity of 4.2 wt% with a high-capacity retention of 92.6 % over 10 dehydrogenation cycles. In/Ex-situ XRD analyses proved that the synergistic effects of in-situ formed metallic Ni and LaH 2 catalytic phases during the milling and ab/desorption processes can simultaneously enhance the ab/desorption kinetics of Mg/MgH 2 . That is, the LaH 2 can act as a hydrogen pump to promote the dehydrogenation of hydrides, while the Ni is beneficial to accelerate the dissociation of metal-hydrogen atoms and the formation of hydrogen molecules on the surface of Mg alloy. These findings highlight the potential of multicomponent Mg-based alloys for practical use in solid-state hydrogen storage systems through in-situ formed catalytic phases.

Lithium borohydride (LiBH4) is a promising hydrogen storage material, but the irreversibility of hydrolysis and the high cost of regeneration have severely restrained its commercial applications. Herein, we reported a cost-effective method to regenerate LiBH4 by ball milling hydrous lithium metaborate (LiBO2·2H2O) with low-cost Mg-based alloys, instead of MgH2, under ambient conditions. An effective strategy is developed to improve the regeneration kinetics of LiBH4 by introducing the light rare-earth metals into Mg to facilitate the breakage of B–O and conversion of H+ into H–. A yield of 40% can be achieved for a relatively short ball milling duration (10 h) for the LiBO2·2H2O-CeMg12 system. The optimized regeneration of LiBH4 is believed to be efficient and economical since it utilizes an intrinsic hydrogen source in LiBO2·2H2O and cheap reducing agents. Our finding is expected to enable a wide deployment of LiBH4 for hydrogen storage.

In this work, Mg(In) and Mg(Ag) solid-solution ultrafine particles were successfully synthesized by using a direct current (DC) arc-plasma method and their hydrogen storage and hydrolysis behaviors were thoroughly investigated. In particular, microstructural analyses clearly reveal that MgH 2 @MgIn and MgH 2 @MgAg composites are autogenerated upon hydrogenation via the formation of nano MgIn or MgAg intermetallic phase on MgH 2 : Mg(In/Ag) + H 2 ⟷ MgH 2 + MgIn/MgAg. Upon dehydrogenation, in-situ TEM observations confirm that the reverse reaction occurs through the diffusion of In/Ag from the MgIn/MgAg phase to MgH 2 . Such a diffusion process is coupled with the decomposition of MgH 2 , leading to the microstructural transition from MgH 2 @MgIn or MgH 2 @MgAg to corresponding solid solutions. For Mg-In system, the discovery of the intermediate phase Mg 3 In through in-situ TEM observation indicates that the dehydrogenation process is a two-step reaction dominated by the diffusion of In. Meantime, the improved hydrolysis performances of the MgH 2 @MgIn and MgH 2 @MgAg composites are primarily attributed to the direct participation of MgIn/MgAg in the hydrolysis reaction, providing more active sites for accelerating hydrogen yield. Therefore, the introduction of In or Ag into Mg has provided with noticeable improvements in the hydrogen storage as well as the hydrolysis properties of MgH 2 .

Solid-state magnesium-based hydrogen storage encounters challenges associated with sluggish hydrogen absorption and desorption kinetics. The incorporation of catalysts is considered a promising means to improve the hydrogen absorption and desorption kinetics of these alloys. In this experiment, we prepared the Mg 80 Ni 15 Y 5 alloy via vacuum melting and incorporated TiF 3 in varying weight percentages of 1, 3, 5, and 7 wt% through ball milling . The phase composition and microstructure of the samples were analyzed and measured using X-ray diffraction meter (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) techniques. The results revealed that the TiF 3 introduced two catalytically phases, MgF and TiF 2 . And TiF 2 transforms into TiH 2 after hydrogen absorption, which covers the surface of MgH 2 and prolongs the nucleation time of MgH 2 .Furthermore, the addition of TiF 3 made the surface of alloy markedly coarser and more irregular and few cracks, providing channels for hydrogen diffusion. This behavior optimized the kinetic performance of the alloy. It was observed that the samples containing 7 wt%TiF 3 achieved 99.2 % hydrogen saturation even in low-temperature. It's worth mentioning that the addition of 7 wt% TiF 3 to the Mg 80 Ni 15 Y 5 alloy significantly reduced the dehydrogenation activation energy to 58.5 kJ/mol, as opposed to pure magnesium with an activation energy of 158.2 kJ/mol. This substantial reduction has effectively accelerated the hydrogen absorption and desorption rates of the alloy. However, it had only a negligible impact on the thermodynamic properties of the sample with 7 wt%TiF 3 .

LiBH 4 (LB in short) with a hydrogen capacity as high as 18.5 wt% and a low molecular weight (21.78 g mol −1 ) is among the most promising candidates for the hydrogen-based economy. However, current major technologies in (re)generation of LB rely heavily on energy-intensive processes, which greatly prohibits practical scaling-up of applications. Here we report a sustainable and effective approach to (re)generate LB via converting renewable H + in crystalline water into H - , achieving a desirable yield of ∼50%. This one-step synthesis method relies on the reaction between spent fuels, specifically LiBO 2 · x H 2 O, and Mg-based alloys to form LB under ambient atmosphere. Notably, our approach surpasses the efficiency of other conventional method, such as LiH-B-H 2 and MgH 2 -LiBO 2 systems, which not only bypasses the energy-intensive dehydration procedure of LiBO 2 · x H 2 O (∼470 ℃) but also eliminates the use of costly hydrides or high-pressure H 2 . Our findings indicate that Mg participated in the regeneration process prior to Al in Mg-Al alloys and [BH 4 ] - is gradually evolved from other intermediate species [BH x (OH) 4- x ] - ( x = 0, 1, 2, 3). By combining hydrogen release and efficient storage of hydrogen-rich substrate in a closed materials cycle, this study may shed light on a promising step toward application of renewable hydrogen in a fuel cell-based hydrogen economy.

The composites comprised of Co nanoparticle and C nanosheet were prepared though a high-temperature carbonization reaction. The catalysis of Co@C composites on the hydrogen storage behavior of Mg 90 Ce 5 Y 5 alloy was investigated in detail by XRD, SEM, TEM, PCI, and DSC method. Because of the synergistic catalytic function of C and Co in C@Co nanocomposites, the Mg 90 Ce 5 Y 5 alloy with 10 wt.% C@Co shows the excellent hydrogen absorption and desorption performances. Time for releasing hydrogen reduces from 150 min to 11 min with the addition of the C@Co composites at the temperature of 300 °C. Meanwhile, the dehydrogenation activation energy also declines from 130.3 to 81.9 kJ mol −1 H 2 after the addition of the C@Co composites. This positive effect attributes to the C layer with the high defect density and the Co nanoparticles, which reduces the energy barriers for the nucleation of Mg/MgH 2 phase and the recombination of hydrogen molecule. Besides, the C@Co composites also improve the activation property of the Mg 90 Ce 5 Y 5 alloy which was fully activated in the first cycle. Moreover, the temperature for initial dehydrogenation and the endothermic peak of the alloy hydride were also decreased. Although the addition of the C@Co composites increases the plateau pressures and decreases the value of the decomposition enthalpy, these differences are so small that the improvement on thermodynamics can hardly be seen.
