Ammonia nitrogen is a major stressor that negatively affects the welfare of fish during transportation, leading to considerable economic losses. However, there is a lack of effective materials to adsorb ammonia nitrogen in water during the transportation. In this study, we prepared a biochar microsphere, chitosan loaded magnesium biochar microsphere (CS-Mg-SB-M), which showed the superior ammonia–nitrogen adsorption efficiency and reusability compared to the materials prepared with either magnesium impregnation or chitosan modification alone. The removal rate of ammonia nitrogen reached 83.41 % in water containing 50 mg L −1 ammonia nitrogen. The Pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models fitted the adsorption process well, suggesting that chemical and monolayer adsorption play a dominant role in ammonia nitrogen adsorbed by CS-Mg-SB-M. The adsorption mechanism of ammonia nitrogen removal by CS-Mg-SB-M involved the synergistic effects of physical absorption (colossal surface area and pore size) and chemical absorption (including coordination bonds, hydrogen bonds, and ionic bonds) according to results of SEM, XRD, FTIR and molecular dynamic simulation. In practical applications, CS-Mg-SB-M demonstrated 33–53 % ammonia nitrogen absorption efficiency, elevating survival rates to 40–60 % alongside measurable enhancements in muscle quality (e.g., cellular structure, drip loss, whiteness, brightness, and redness) of fish after 24 h of transporting in high-density and individual packing modes. This study represents the first application of feasible material to remove ammonia nitrogen in the live fish transportation system, concurrently enhancing survival rate and muscle quality.

The problem of blue algae accumulation can be alleviated by utilizing blue algae as biomass for resource utilization, which can remove excess phosphates from water to alleviate eutrophication. Herein, Magnesium (Mg) and/or lanthanum (La) were used to modify biochar via high-temperature slow pyrolysis with blue algae as the raw biomass. These modified biochars exhibited abundant carbon (18.0 %-50.3 %), oxygen content (17.4 %-49.1 %), along with a high specific surface area (82.26–233.80 m 2 /g). The surface of metal-modified biochar was enriched with hydroxyl and carboxyl groups and metal elements were efficiently incorporated into biochars. Adsorption kinetic and isotherm experiments were conducted under the optimal pyrolysis temperature of 600 °C, pH of 6.0, and adsorbent dosage of 2.0 g/L. The adsorption kinetics studies by metal-modified biochars for phosphate fitted well pseudo-second-order model Redlich-Peterson isotherm model. Biochar modified by Mg and La exhibited the highest removal efficiency (97.8 %) for phosphate at adsorption equilibrium. The adsorption mechanism involved the electrostatic interaction between hydroxylated metal oxides and negatively charged phosphate ions and the precipitation of phosphate ions through chemical reactions with metal oxides in the solution. After phosphate adsorption, the pristine and metal-modified biochars derived from blue algae were applied as the soil amendment. Biochar adsorbed phosphate apparently improved the germination rate of seeds facilitated the height, width, weight, and chlorophyll content of vegetable seedlings, and induced oxidative stress, which proved that the biochar recovered after adsorption was a high-quality soil amendment. This study provides a new approach for the treatment of phosphate wastewater and the algae application.

The production of sludge-based biochar to recover phosphorus (P) from wastewater and reuse the recovered phosphorus as agricultural fertilizer is a preferred process. This article mainly studied the removal of phosphate (PO 4 -P) from aqueous solution by synthesizing sludge-based biochar (MgSBC-0.1) from anaerobic fermentation sludge treated with magnesium (Mg)-loading-modification, and compared it with unmodified sludge-based biochar (SBC). The physicochemical properties, adsorption efficiency, and adsorption mechanism of MgSBC-0.1 were studied. The results showed that the surface area of MgSBC-0.1 synthesized increased by 5.57 times. The material surface contained MgO, Mg(OH) 2 , and CaO nanoparticles. MgSBC-0.1 can effectively remove phosphate in the initial solution pH range of 3.00–7.00, with a fitted maximum phosphorus adsorption capacity of 379.52 mg·g -1 . The adsorption conforms to the pseudo second-order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm adsorption curve. The characterization of the adsorbed composite material revealed the contribution of phosphorus crystal deposition and electrostatic attraction to phosphorus absorption.

Adsorption of levofloxacin (LEV) onto four types of magnesium (Mg)-impregnated biochars, fabricated via thermal pyrolysis of wood chips pretreated with MgSO4 was investigated. The Mg-impregnated biochars were characterized with various tools and techniques. Batch sorption experiments were conducted to determine the sorption kinetics and isotherms of LEV onto the Mg-impregnated biochars. The pseudo-second order kinetic model described the adsorption kinetic data better than the pseudo-first order kinetic model and the Elovich equation. Due to multi-mechanisms, the Freundlich model described the experimental isotherms better than the Langmuir model. The Langmuir maximum adsorption capacities of the Mg-impregnated biochars to LEV ranged from 7.38 to 25.2 mg g−1. In the fixed-bed column experiment, higher bed height and lower flow rate led to greater LEV removal. Findings from this work indicate that Mg-impregnated biochars can be used as an alternative adsorbent to effectively remove LEV from aqueous solutions.

Nonoxidative dehydrogenation of isobutane is one of the sustainable strategies for producing high value added isobutene. As alternatives for the commercial Pt- and Cr-based dehydrogenation catalysts, supported V-based catalysts are worthy of study. In this work, a series of VOx/mMgAlO-R catalysts (m = 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30) were designed and prepared by loading VOxon mMgAlO composite oxide supports derived from mesoporous Al2O3-supported layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanocomposites. The calcined and reduced catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, Ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance (UV-Vis) spectra, NH3temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), Temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and low temperature N2adsorption–desorption isotherms. The as-synthesized VOx/20MgAlO-R with appropriate Mg addition exhibits superior activity (43–56% conversion and 77–81% selectivity), excellent stability and coking-resistance for the isobutane dehydrogenation. The structure–performance relationship reveals that the formation of VOxspecies confined in the reconstructed LDH interlayer and porous MgO facilitates dispersing and stabilizing the VOxspecies. The low polymerization degree and higher proportion of V4+ion for VOxspecies, strong acidity of medium acid sites and low concentration of strong acid sites are responsible for the excellent anti-coking and catalytic performance. The strong VOx–support interaction is beneficial for enhancing the stability of the catalysts. Keywords:isobutane dehydrogenation;layered double hydroxide;vanadium-based catalysts;magnesium modification;polymerization degree

The isomerization of glucose catalyzed by attapulgite (ATP) modified by MgCl 2 was investigated. The catalytic performance of ATP on glucose isomerization was significantly enhanced after MgCl 2 modification (Mg-ATP), achieving a fructose yield of 36.5 % and a selectivity of 90.2 % in an aqueous system at 120 °C for 1 h. Combined with the characterization results, it could be concluded that the microstructure of ATP has been changed after MgCl 2 modification, leading to an increase in surface area and the number of weak basic sites, which are beneficial for the glucose isomerization reaction.

Supported VO x catalysts are promising nonoxidative propane dehydrogenation (PDH) materials for their commercially attractive activity and propylene selectivity. However, they frequently suffer from rapid deactivation caused by coke deposition. This article describes the promoting role of magnesium on the stability of VO x /Al 2 O 3 catalysts for PDH. A series of VO x /Al 2 O 3 and Mg-modified VO x /Al 2 O 3 catalysts were synthesized by an incipient wetness impregnation method. The catalysts were carefully characterized by Raman spectra, UV-Vis spectra, STEM, TGA and in situ DRIFTS. We showed that the stability of a 12V/Al 2 O 3 catalyst was significantly improved on addition of small amounts of MgO. Experimental evidences indicate that V 2 O 5 nanoparticles emerge in the 12V/Al 2 O 3 samples, and appropriate Mg addition helps dispersing the V 2 O 5 nanoparticles into 2D VO x species thus decreasing coke formation and improving stability in nonoxidative dehydrogenation of propane. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J , 2017

Although ball milling is effective for biochar modification with metal oxides for efficient phosphate removal, the recyclability of the adsorbent as well as the precursors for modification, still need to be optimized. Herein, a magnesium-modified biochar was first prepared with the precursor of MgCl2·6H2O through the solvent-free ball milling method. After that, recyclable biochar beads were fabricated with the introduction of sodium alginate and Fe3O4.The beads were proved to have excellent adsorption performance for phosphate with a saturated capacity of 53.2 mg g−1, which is over 12 times higher than that of pristine biochar beads. Although the particle size reduction, surface area, and O-containing group increments after milling are beneficial for adsorption, the remarkable promotion in performance should mainly result from the appropriate formation of magniferous crystals on biochar, which greatly accelerates the electrostatic interactions as well as precipitation for adsorption. The beads also exhibited excellent magnetism-driven recyclability, which greatly avoids secondary contamination and broadens the application field of the adsorbent. Keywords:biochar;modification;adsorption;phosphate;sodium alginate;recyclable
