Magnesium is a promising anode material . However, the magnesium anode will quickly react with the electrolyte to form an ion-insulated passivation film, resulting in voltage hysteresis. Because the magnesium anode is easily corroded, it leads to a decrease in its electrochemical performance. In this paper, the anode of the magnesium battery was modified by ZIF-8 coating. The ZIF-8 coating can largely prevent contact between water in the solution and the surface of the magnesium anode, which can inhibit the passivation of the magnesium anode. The voltage hysteresis time is significantly reduced from 4 s before modification to 0.3 s, which also effectively reduces the resistance of the battery. Compared with the unmodified magnesium battery, the modified magnesium battery has a larger initial voltage and a longer discharge platform. The anode utilization rate is doubled compared with that before modification, and the specific energy density is also greatly improved. The ZIF-8 coating with porous network structure and hydrophobicity can slow down the infiltration of corrosive substances to some degree, prolong its transmission path, and provide better protection for the magnesium anode.

Mg2+/Li+ hybrid batteries have recently been constructed combining a Mg anode, a Li+-intercalation electrode, and an electrolyte containing both Mg2+ and Li+. These batteries have been reported to outperform all the previously reported magnesium batteries in terms of specific capacity, cycling stability, and rate capability. Herein, we report the outstanding electrochemical performance of Mg2+/Li+ hybrid batteries consisting of a one-dimensional mesoporous TiO2(B) cathode, a Mg anode, and an electrolyte consisting of 0.5 mol L–1 Mg(BH4)2 + 1.5 mol L–1 LiBH4 in tetraglyme. A highly synergetic interaction between Li+ and Mg2+ ions toward the pseudo-capacitive reaction is proposed. The hybrid batteries show superior rate performance with 130 mAh g–1 at 1 C and 115 mAh g–1 at 2 C, together with excellent cyclability up to 6000 cycles.

Rechargeable Mg batteries have the advantages of abundant reserves and high safety, but suitable inorganic cathodes are quite limited. Organic polymers break the hindrance of the inorganic Mg-storage crystal lattice and provide more selections, but the reports on organic rechargeable Mg battery cathodes are relatively few. Herein, high-capacity bipolar organic cathodes are developed for rechargeable Mg batteries. Poly(1,5-diaminoanthraquinone) with double polyaniline chains is used as a bipolar cathode. The carbonyl and amino groups are employed as the N-doping and P-doping centers, respectively, and the conjugated anthraquinone unit delocalizes the charge density change during the redox reactions. Considering the mass of Mg salt, the poly(1,5-diaminoanthraquinone) cathode provides a high corrected capacity of 267 mA h g–1 (non-corrected capacities of 297 mA h g–1) for bipolar reactions. Moreover, compared with the single-chained poly(1-aminoanthraquinone) (44% capacity maintained after 140 cycles), the double-chained poly(1,5-diaminoanthraquinone) shows a much better N-doping cycleability (97% capacity maintained after 300 cycles), as the double polyaniline chains enhance the structure stability during the Mg-storage reaction. The present study demonstrates the importance of a large conjugated double-chain structure to enhance the Mg-storage performance of organic polymers. It is also imagined that the bipolar organic materials with both of N- and P-dopings are a highly promising strategy for development of high-capacity organic Mg battery cathodes.

The magnesium (Mg) metal anodes of magnesium batteries have attracted significant attention because of their high theoretical capacity, high safety, and low cost. Their development is hindered by the passivation characteristics of magnesium, especially the serious voltage lag and corrosion polarization in aqueous solutions. This study demonstrates a novel approach involving the electrophoresis deposition on the surface of a magnesium electrode with MXene@ZIF-67. MXene@ZIF-67 is a heterojunction material with a core-shell structure obtained from MXene and ZIF-67 by the in-situ growth method. The addition of ZIF-67 not only solves the problem of MXene layer-to-layer instability, but also improves the corrosion resistance of magnesium metal by utilizing the properties of ZIF-67 material topology. The core-shell structure design of the modified film layer enables MXene and ZIF-67 to achieve efficient synergy. On the one hand, the unique lamellar structure of MXene is utilized to achieve uniform Mg 2 + flux and reduce the interfacial resistance of the magnesium anode, and on the other hand, the unique ionic conductor performance of ZIF-67 enables precise separation of solvent molecules and simultaneous selective Mg 2+ transport. So, the film is beneficial for interfacial stability and reaction kinetics. The modified Mg battery exhibits a reduction in voltage lag time from 7.2 seconds to 1.3 seconds. A notable reduction in polarity and enhanced stability in plating and stripping was observed in magnesium metal battery for 300 cycles. The DFT calculations show that there is a high adsorption energy between the MXene@ZIF-67 film and the magnesium alloy.

A comparative study on the effects of different binders on the electrochemical performance of rechargeable magnesium batteries with Mo 6 S 8 cathode is conducted for the first time. The selected binders are commercial organic-soluble polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), water-soluble poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), gelatin, sodium alginate (SA) and Beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD). The binders significantly affect the physical properties, thus the electrochemical performance of Mo 6 S 8 cathode. Compared with those using traditional PVDF binder, Mo 6 S 8 electrodes with PAA and PVA exhibit enhanced cycling stabilities and rate capabilities, which are attributed to the improved cohesion among the electrode constituents and adhesion between the electrode laminate and the current collector. In addition, the anodic stability of these binders is not only related to the chemical structure of binders, but also to the uniformity of electrode surface . SA binder shows low anodic stability duo to containing easily oxidized groups. Non-uniform electrode surface decreases the anodic stability of PVDF based Mo 6 S 8 electrode. Gelatin can be used as a binder in the formulation of high voltage cathodes for rechargeable magnesium batteries.

Magnesium batteries offer a safer alternative for next-generation battery technology due to their insusceptibility to dendrite deposition. Selective membranes tailored for magnesium-ion conduction will unlock further technological advancement. Herein, we demonstrate fluorine-free magnesiated sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (Mg-SPEEK) selective membranes capable of facilitating magnesium-ion conduction while effectively rejecting soluble organic species. These membranes demonstrate a reversible Mg plating and stripping Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 85.4% and an ionic conductivity of 3.3 × 10–4 S cm–1 at room temperature, surpassing those for a Mg-Nafion selective membrane. Theoretical density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that SPEEK possesses more localized charge centers along its backbone compared with Nafion, potentially facilitating enhanced ion conduction. Full cells assembled with Mg-SPEEK coupled with the organic cathode pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (PTO) and Mg metal demonstrated significantly improved capacity retention as compared to those assembled with conventional nonselective separators.

Graphical An amorphous molybdenum polysulfide material is synthesized and used as the cathode for rechargeable magnesium batteries. This electrode provides a high capacity (185 mAh g −1 ) and a good rate performance (50 mAh g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 ). A mechanism study demonstrates that both molybdenum and sulfur undergo redox reactions and contribute to the capacity. Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) attract research interest owing to the low cost and high reliability, but the design of cathode materials is the major difficulty of their development. The bivalent magnesium cation suffers from a strong interaction with the anion and is difficult to intercalate into traditional magnesium intercalation cathodes. Herein, an amorphous molybdenum polysulfide (a-MoS x ) is synthesized via a simple one-step solvothermal reaction and used as the cathode material for RMBs. The a-MoS x cathode provides a high capacity (185 mAh g −1 ) and a good rate performance (50 mAh g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 ), which are much superior compared with crystalline MoS 2 and demonstrate the privilege of amorphous RMB cathodes. A mechanism study demonstrates both of molybdenum and sulfur undergo redox reactions and contribute to the capacity. Further optimizations indicate low-temperature synthesis would favor the magnesium storage performance of a-MoS x .

Graphite fluorides have become promising electrode materials for lithium batteries while their applications in magnesium batteries are rarely reported. Here we demonstrate for the first time CF 0.8 as a cathode material for magnesium batteries with a high discharge capacity of more than 800 mAh g −1 . X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the charge/discharge measurements are used to characterize its structure and electrochemical performance . SEM indicates that CF 0.8 sample is a layered structure with the thickness of approximately 300∼400 nm. The CF 0.8 cathode exhibits a high discharge capacity of 813.4 mAh g −1 after discharging to 0.5 V at 20 mA g −1 in 0.4 M (PhMgCl) 2 -AlCl 3 /THF electrolyte (named as APC/THF). Discharge product MgF 2 is confirmed by EDX and XPS measurements. Addition of LiCl to APC/THF solution can not only enhance the gravimetric energy densities but also greatly improve the rate performance. The possible function mechanism is proposed and discussed.

Magnesium batteries are recognized as a potential alternative to lithium ion batteries benefited from the advantages of low cost, high safety, and high energy density . But the development of magnesium batteries suffers from the sluggish motion of Mg 2+ in solid electrodes due to strong polarization. Compounds explored to accommodate magnesiation/demagnesiation, suffer from low capacity, sluggish kinetics and poor cycling performance. In this manuscript, copper current collector aided tellurium (Te) as the cathode material of magnesium battery is proposed. Due to superior electronic structure of Te atom, both reactants and products of cathode reaction exhibit metallic conductivity which accelerates the magnesiation/demagnesiation process This material delivers a specific capacity of 338 mAh/g at 100 mA/g, and keeps at 178.5 mAh/g after 400 cycles. Moreover, the electrode performs superior rate capability than the previously reported materials. A specific capacity of 265.4 mAh/g is achieved at 2 A/g without obvious polarization. Even at a very high current density of 3.75 A/g, a specific capacity of 118 mAh/g is still maintained. This study highlights the importance of electronic structure for multi-valent ion reaction related material, which also offers new strategy for cathode design of Mg batteries.

Hybrid Li Mg batteries stand out by combining the rapid lithium diffusion kinetics and the advantages of magnesium. However, the uneven Mg deposits may result in continuous parasitic reactions and penetrate the separator. Herein, cellulose acetate (CA), with functional groups, was applied to engineer coordination with MOFs and construct the evenly-distributed and ample nucleation sites. Moreover, the hierarchical MOFs@CA network was fabricated via the metal ion pre-anchored strategy to regulate the uniform Mg 2+ flux and improve ion-conductivity simultaneously. Furthermore, the hierarchical CA networks with well-ordered MOFs provided efficient MOF-to-MOF ion-transportation channels and served as ion sieves to inhibit anion transportation, thereby mitigating polarization. The super dendrite-inhibition and interfacial compatibility was confirmed and the assembled Mo 6 S 8 //Mg batteries exhibited high capacity about 105 mAh g −1 and capacity decay of 4 % after 600 cycles at 30 C, which surpassed the state-of-the-art LMBs system employing Mo 6 S 8 electrode. The fabricated GPE sheds fresh strategy for the design of CA-based GPEs and bright light on the promise of high-performance LMBs.

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) attract special interests as a low-cost and reliable energy-storage technology, but the development is hindered by the low capacities and sluggish Mg 2+ diffusion kinetics of the traditional inorganic cathode materials. Organic polymers break the hindrance of inorganic lattice and deliver plenty of candidates for RMB cathodes with the flexible and designable frameworks. Herein, three organic polyanthraquinonyl sulfides (PAQSs) are fabricated and investigated comparatively as RMB cathodes to reveal the effect of structure on the electrochemical magnesium-storage performance. It is demonstrated that the capacity decay is primarily owing to the dissolution of the discharge products (magnesiation state) in the electrolyte. The degree of polymerization is an important factor for the cycling stability. Prominently, poly(2,6-anthraquinonyl sulfide) shows an outstanding comprehensive performance, providing a high capacity (145 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 ), an outstanding rate capability (74 mAh/g at 10C) and an excellent cyclability (99 % capacity retained after 1000 cycles at 5C). Significantly, poly(2,6-anthraquinonyl sulfide) store Mg 2+ rather than MgCl + , and exhibits a considerable specific energy density of 185 Wh kg −1 . The present work would assist the rational design of advanced organic RMB electrode materials, and highlights the advantages of organic polymers based on enolization chemistry for high-performance magnesium-storage.

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are considered as a potential rechargeable for replacing or assisting lithium metal batteries (LMBs). The Mg anode is prone to experiencing a native oxide layer in most electrolytes, resulting in an inferior overpotential and irreversible Mg plating/stripping behavior. Herein, we report for the first time that a novel Mg battery can be assembled using a non-nucleophilic Mg(HMDS)2-based electrolyte with I2 in a relatively large solvent molecule diglyme. An artificial interface phase of MgI2 was constructed in Mg(HMDS)2-AlCl3 electrolyte through the reaction of oxidant I2 and reductant Mg foil. This artificial interface phase is less sensitive to the electrolyte composition. The electrolyte decomposition and the Mg side reaction are effectively inhibited by the MgI2 interphase. In-situ MgI2 interphase significantly lessens the interface impedance and overpotential of the electrochemical Mg deposition/dissolution process. More importantly, the overpotential of the cell using Mg(HMDS)2-2AlCl3- I2/G2 electrolyte is decreased to 0.10 V vs Mg2+/Mg with high Coulombic efficiency of ∼99%, which is superior to the recently reported Mg(HMDS)2-based electrolytes. Besides, the first-principles calculations demonstrate that Mg is uniformly deposited on the MgI2 surface due to reversible Mg plating/stripping, low overpotential, and long-term cycle performance. Note that the as-fabricated novel Ni0.6Co0.4Se2|Mg(HMDS)2-AlCl3- I2/G2|Mg full battery delivers an initial specific capacity of 186 mAh g–1, and retains 120 mAh g–1 with Coulombic efficiency of 100% after 100 cycles. The novel Mg battery verifies the availability of the Mg(HMDS)2-AlCl3- I2/G2 electrolyte through electrolyte additive engineering. The high capacity and stable as-assembled Mg//Ni0.6Co0.4Se2 full cell confirms the compatibility of Mg(HMDS)2 and I2 as well as the utility of modified electrolyte and diselenides cathode materials in RMBs.
