Magnesium is considered one of the most promising anode materials. However, it is easy to react with electrolyte to form an ionic insulating passive film, causing a common phenomenon of voltage hysteresis and the resultant deteriorated electrochemical performance for magnesium batteries . Here, the voltage hysteresis of magnesium-sulfur batteries in Mg(ClO 4 ) 2 electrolyte is confirmed to be a consequence of magnesium passivation through three-electrode test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The continuous competition relation between the formation and destruction of the passive film during magnesium stripping is discovered. The destruction process is controlled by the current density on magnesium anode, and the formation process is mainly affected by the concentration of anions causing passivation. Bromide ions as electrolyte additive can protect the magnesium surface from ClO 4 − anions and regulate the composition and thickness of the surface film, and the passivation of magnesium and the voltage hysteresis can be suppressed obviously. This work provides an important reference for further regulation of passivation behavior of magnesium anode.

A novel, two-chamber electrolysis cell equipped with an ion exchange membrane and a magnesium anode was proposed in this study to recover phosphate as struvite from both the simulated and real biogas digestion slurry of swine wastewater. In the electrolysis experiments with the simulated slurry, the optimal pH and current density were determined to be 8.5 and 22.2 A m −2 , respectively, achieving 95% phosphate removal efficiency and 100% current efficiency. The phosphate removal rate was mainly dependent on the magnesium dissolving rate. In the electrolysis experiments with the real digestion slurry, the pH of slurry increased from 7.4 to around 8.7 after the cathode-anode sub-section electrolysis without adding chemical reagents, achieving 93% phosphate removal efficiency at 22.2 A m −2 . The phosphate removal efficiency could be kept constant in three consecutive electrolysis cycles with both the anion exchange membrane and the cation exchange membrane . The cost of the magnesium anode treatment for the real biogas digestion slurry for struvite recovery was estimated to be $81.57 kg −1 P, mainly resulting from the consumption of electricity and magnesium anode. The precipitates collected from all experiments were identified as struvite by the X-ray diffraction analysis.

Rechargeable Mg-ion batteries typically suffer from either rapid passivation of the Mg anode or severe corrosion of the current collectors by halogens within the electrolyte, limiting their practical implementation. Here, we demonstrate the broadly applicable strategy of forming an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (a-SEI) layer on Mg to address these challenges. The a-SEI layer is formed by simply soaking Mg foil in a tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether solution containing LiTFSI and AlCl3, with Fourier transform infrared and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy measurements revealing spontaneous reaction with the Mg foil. The a-SEI is found to mitigate Mg passivation in Mg(TFSI)2/DME electrolytes with symmetric cells exhibiting overpotentials that are 2 V lower compared to when the a-SEI is not present. This approach is extended to Mg(ClO4)2/DME and Mg(TFSI)2/PC electrolytes to achieve reversible Mg plating and stripping, which is not achieved with bare electrodes. The interfacial resistance of the cells with a-SEI protected Mg is found to be two orders of magnitude lower than that with bare Mg in all three of the electrolytes, indicating the formation of an effective Mg-ion transporting interfacial structure. X-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy measurements show that the a-SEI contains minimal MgCO3, MgO, Mg(OH)2, and TFSI–, while being rich in MgCl2, MgF2, and MgS, when compared to the passivation layer formed on bare Mg in Mg(TFSI)2/DME.

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) have garnered significant attention in recent years. However, the commercialization of RMBs has been severely hampered by the low-strength and high-resistance connections between the magnesium (Mg) anodes and aluminum (Al) tabs. To address this challenge, we perform orthogonal experiments on 0.2 mm-thick Al–Mg ultrasonic welded joints to establish an optimized parameter range. Analysis of variance revealed that ultrasonic amplitude exerted the most dominant influence on joint strength (52.03%), followed by welding time (25.59%) and welding pressure (22.37%), with a significant interaction effect observed between welding time and amplitude. Notably, at a welding pressure of 0.40 MPa, the Al–Mg joint achieved peak performance, including the maximum lap-shear load (59.20 N) and minimal electrical resistance (0.483 mΩ). RMB pouch cells assembled with good-welded tabs demonstrated superior electrochemical performance compared to under and overwelded counterparts, exhibiting reduced internal resistance (3.55 Ω in the first cycle), enhanced capacity retention (77.45% after 60 cycles), and raised Coulombic efficiency (99.88% after 440 cycles).

The strong push for electric vehicles and large-scale power storage systems has generated intense interest in rechargeable magnesium batteries due to the innate merits associated with the magnesium metal anode in terms of volumetric capacity, abundance, and operational safety. Herein, we report a novel pathway toward the development of an advanced battery containing a magnesium anode, a titanium dioxide cathode, and a magnesium borohydride/tetraglyme electrolyte, which delivers high specific capacity, as well as exceptional cycle life and rate capability. This work demonstrates the importance of compatibility of the electrochemical activities of the cathode materials and electrolytes in rechargeable Mg batteries.
