The preparation of coordination polymers with good room temperature phosphorescence is the focus of current research. In this paper, zinc and cadmium were used as metal ions and 2,3-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (H 2 L = 2,3-pyridinedicarboxylic acid) was used as organic ligands to successfully synthesize Cd (II) homometallic [CdL]·H 2 O and Zn(II)Cd(II) heterometallic [ZnCdL 2 ]·DMF·5H 2 O coordination polymers microstructures. In addition, morphology, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), elemental analyses, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and their luminescence properties were studied. Cd-CP is a micron-sized spherical structure, while Zn/Cd-CP is a flower-like structure formed by the accumulation of sheets. The results show that Cd(II) homo- and Zn(II)Cd(II) heterometallic coordination polymers have quantum yields of 10.05% and 8.54%, respectively. It is worth noting that the lifetime of Cd-CP is 124.62 ms, while the lifetime of Zn/Cd-CP is significantly extended to 363.09 ms after doping with metal ion Zn 2+ . The phosphorescent lifetime of coordination polymers was improved by the heterometallic doping strategy, which provided a new idea and method for the preparation of coordination polymers with long-lived room temperature phosphorescent properties. In addition, the two coordination polymers exhibited blue and cyan fluorescence at 365 nm UV light, respectively, and a green afterglow of about 2 s could be observed with the naked eye when the UV lamp was turned off.

A high removal rate (>99.7%) of combined arsenite (As(III)) and Cd (Cd(II)) in low concentration (1000 μg/L) from contaminated water was achieved by a calcined MgZnFe-CO 3 layered double hydroxide (CMZF) adsorbent. Batch control studies and a series of spectroscopy detection technologies were employed to investigate the removal mechanism and interactions between As(III) and Cd(II) on the interface of water/CMZF. Synergistic adsorption and photooxidation occurred based on the systematical kinetic and isotherm studies. The enhanced removal of As(III) was achieved by the photooxidation, formation of ternary As(III) Cd(II) surface complexes and enhanced hydrogen bond . Meanwhile, oxidative formed negative charged As(V) could reduce the electrostatic repulsion force between Cd(II) cations and play a role as anion bridging, consequently resulted in a stronger attraction between CMZF and Cd(II). Combined with the verdicts of relevant characterizations such as XRD, XPS and EPR, it was assumed that the deep co-removal mechanism could be attributed to the coupling of various processes including intercalation, complexation, photooxidation of As(III) and precipitation of CdCO 3 . Moreover, the successful removal of As(III) and Cd(II) from real water matrix qualified the CMZF a potentially attractive adsorbent for both As(III) and Cd(II) deep treatment in practical engineering.

The transport of Pb(II) or Cd(II) in subsurface has been studied in the literature; however; their co-transport in porous media in presence of colloids has not been clearly understood. In this work, a series of column experiments were conducted to study Pb(II) and Cd(II) co-transport in saturated porous media under various experimental conditions with different combination of colloidal solution (montmorillonite colloid, manual loessial soil colloid and humic acid), flow rate (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 ml min−1) and sand grain size (0.4–0.8mm and 0.8–2.0mm). The results showed that increase of flow rate and grain size promoted the mobility of Pb(II) and Cd(II), furthermore, the presences of mobile colloids also enhanced the mobility of the two heavy metals, meanwhile, Cd(II) showed higher mobility than Pb(II) in the columns. Findings from this work enhanced current understanding of the competitive transport and colloid-facilitated transport of heavy metals in saturated porous media.

Solid waste derived ceramsites are a typical representative of the “treat waste by waste” concept, however, they have not been given enough attention due to high energy consumption, large carbon emissions and low efficiency. In this work, a hypoxic roasting method was used to prepare industrial solid derived ceramsite for the removal of heavy metal Cd(II) from aqueous solution. Compared with conventional ceramsite (CC), the novel hypoxic ceramsite (HC) exhibited higher specific surface area, more hydroxyl and aromatic functional groups, and more developed pore structure. It could effectively adsorb Cd(II) from aqueous solution in a wide pH range of 2–8, and the adsorption rate was 3 times that of CC. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cd(II) by CC and HC were 22.9 and 32.2 mg/g at 25 °C respectively. The adsorption mechanisms included electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bond reaction and complexation reaction. After five regeneration cycles, the removal efficiency of HC maintained 86.9 %. Furthermore, about 60 % of carbon was retained in HC, largely reducing carbon emissions. These findings reveal the energy conversation and environmental friendliness of this ceramsite, which strongly supports the development and popularization of hypoxic preparation methods for ceramsites.

View large Download slide View large Download slide Close modal Industrial heavy metal-contaminated wastewater is one of the main water pollution problems. Adsorbents are a promising method for the removal of heavy metal contaminants. Herein, polyaspartic acid/carboxymethyl poplar sawdust hydrogels (PASP/CMPP) and ascorbic acid/carboxymethyl poplar sawdust hydrogels (VC/CMPP) were prepared by aqueous polymerization using alkalized poplar sawdust (CMPP) as the substrate and PASP and vitamin C (VC) as modifiers. The effective results, provided by the characterization analysis of SEM and BET, indicate that the surface of the PASP/CMPP hydrogel has a larger number of loose pores and a larger pore volume than the VC/CMPP hydrogel. The treatment effects of the two hydrogels on simulated wastewater containing Cd(II) were investigated by a batch of experiments. The results showed that PASP/CMPP had a better adsorption effect than VC/CMPP under the same adsorption conditions. Interestingly, the solid concentration effect was found in the process of sorption kinetics and sorption isotherms. The sorption kinetic curves of Cd(II) on PASP/CMPP were well-fitted by the quasi-second-order kinetics under different adsorbent concentrations. The adsorption conforms to Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models. More importantly, PASP/CMPP composites are expected to be used as a new kind of environmental adsorbent for wastewater treatment. Hydrogels of PASP/CMPP were prepared. The hydrogels of PASP/CMPP exhibit enhanced sorption capacities for Cd(II). The hydrogels of PASP/CMPP are potential sorbents for wastewater treatment. The solid concentration effect was found in the process of sorption kinetics and sorption isotherms. The synthesis of PASP/CMPP hydrogels provides a win-win strategy.

Turning agricultural waste into effective remediation materials is a highly promising approach for reducing in-field crop burning and promoting affordable wastewater treatment . This comparative study aims to identify active adsorption sites for methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV), and cadmium (Cd) as model pollutants on wheat straw materials modified by a thermal partial-oxidation process. The optimal modification temperature was found to be 160–180 °C for MB and CV adsorption, which is much lower than that of Cd(II) at 220–240 °C. A strong linear correlation exits between total surface group concentrations and Cd(II) uptake, indicating that both acidic and basic functional groups are favourable adsorption sites of Cd(II). By contrast, basic groups generated at higher modification temperatures might have adverse effects on MB and CV adsorption. These results provided mechanistic insights and predictive approach into reuse of agricultural waste for environmental remediation.

The development of efficient adsorbents for heavy metal pollution, especially five toxic heavy metals, has attracted great research interest. Polymer-based adsorbents have aroused research value for their abundant functional groups and high porosity to the ability to capture metal ions. We designed a sulfhydryl-functionalized polymer microcomposite to take up Cr(VI), As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II). The adsorption capacity achieved was 64.2 mg g–1 for Cr(VI), 44.9 mg g–1 for As(III), 35.5 mg g–1 for Cd(II), and 18.2 mg g–1 for Pb(II). Langmuir and Sips isotherm model is dominant for As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II) adsorption. Pseudo-second-order kinetic models can better describe the adsorption behavior of Cr(VI), implying that chemisorption is accompanied by Cr(VI) adsorption. Cr(VI) simultaneous reduction to Cr(III) through the benzenoid amine oxidate pathway was the dominant mechanism, precipitation for Cd(II) adsorption was convinced, and chelation between As(III)/Pb(II) and─SH group and complexation between Pb(II) and C═O or benzene hydroxyl were a plausible mechanism for As(III) and Pb(II) adsorption.

Humin is the waste residue from the process of preparing humic acid, which accounts for a large proportion of the raw material (weathered coal humic acid). Its Cd(II) adsorption performance is far inferior to that of humic acid. How to regenerate humin is of great significance to the low-cost treatment of Cd(II) pollution in wastewater. In this study, humin was modified by hyperbranched polyethyleneimine to enhance the adsorption capacity for Cd(II). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and the X-ray photoelectron spectrometer showed that hyperbranched polyethyleneimine was grafted to the surface of humin. Flame atomic absorption spectroscopy showed that the saturated Cd(II) adsorption capacity of the modified humin was increased to 11.975 mg/g, which is about 5 times than that of humin and is also higher than that of humic acid. The adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherm, and thermodynamic properties of humic acid, humin, and modified humin were also studied. This study may provide a foundation for research utilizing natural resources to reduce heavy metal pollution in the environment. Keywords:humin;hyperbranched polyethyleneimine;modification;adsorption;Cd(II)

The first example of metallic bismuth encapsulated into a mesoporous metal-organic framework of the type MIL-101(Cr) matrix is presented. Bi(III)-impregnated MIL-101(Cr) (Bi(III)/MIL-101(Cr)) was dropped onto a conductive carbon cloth electrode (CCE). Then, bismuth was generated by electrochemical reduction of the Bi(III)/MIL-101(Cr) supported on CCE (Bi/MIL-101(Cr)/CCE). The resulting Bi/MIL-101(Cr)/CCE display impressive performance in terms of peak currents for the ions Cd(II) and Pb(II) when compared to the single-component counterparts. Differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) enabled sensing of the two ions over linear working range of 0.1 to 30 μg L −1 and 30 to 90 μg L −1 . The parameters are refined before the detection of two metal ions, including the amount of bismuth in MIL-101(Cr), optimum pH (5.0), deposition potential (−1.2 V) and deposition time (600 s). The respective detection limits are 60 and 70 ng L −1 (at S/ N = 3). This is strikingly lower than the guideline values of domestic water given by the WHO which are 3 μg L −1 for Cd(II) and 10 μg L −1 for Pb(II). The Bi/MIL-101(Cr) onto CCE is fairly specific for Cd(II) (at around −0.76 V) and Pb(II) (at around −0.54 V), well reproducible and has excellent recovery in real water analysis.
Schematic illustration of the preparation of a Bi(III)/MIL-101(Cr) metal-organic framework, its deposition on a carbon cloth electrode (CCE), and its application for detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) by differential pulse adsorptive stripping voltammetry (DPASV).

Simultaneous removal of cation (e.g., Pb(Ⅱ), Cd(Ⅱ)) and oxyanion (e.g., As(Ⅴ)) heavy metals have attracted increasing interest for adsorption applications due to the complexity of heavy metal polluted groundwater. Manganese-lanthanum binary oxides immobilized on hydrothermal carbonization carbon (Mn x La 1-x @HTCC) were therefore rationally designed in this work, and the Mn-La oxides immobilized on HTCC exhibited more uniform dispersion compared to bulk phase. In single adsorption systems, superior adsorption of different heavy metals could be achieved by tuning the molar ratio of Mn to La, and Mn leaching was reduced by ∼ 75% compared with Mn@HTCC (without La doping). In the coexisting systems, the simultaneous presence of As(Ⅴ) and Pb(Ⅱ) greatly enhanced adsorption of both two heavy metals, while competition was observed in the coexistence of As(Ⅴ) and Cd(Ⅱ). By analyzing the “release-readsorption” phenomenon of Mn and the variation of Mn valence during adsorption, the different roles of Mn species in the removal of three heavy metals were proposed. Finally, high-speed flow adsorption column experiments confirmed that the Mn x La 1-x @HTCC composite can effectively and continuously adsorb heavy metals accompanied by trace Mn leaching content. Overall, this study indicates the potential of Mn-La carbon composites as a novel adsorbent in groundwater remediation.

Excessive cadmium(II) (Cd(II)) in soil has gravely jeopardized global ecosystem stability and human health. The removal of Cd(II) is a permanent cure to remediate Cd(II)-contaminated soil. Herein, a recyclable removal material, zeolite@cellulose-poly(acrylamide) hydrogel (Z@CA) was developed. Batch adsorption experiments and characterisations (SEM-EDS, FTIR, XRD, and XPS) were conducted to explore the adsorption capacity and mechanism of Z@CA. A pot experiment was established to evaluate the effect of Z@CA on soil Cd(II) remediation and Cd(II) toxicity in water spinach. The results showed that in aqueous solutions, the maximum adsorption capacity of Cd(II) by Z@CA was 84.4 mg·g −1 . Electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, and surface complexation collectively facilitated Cd(II) capture by Z@CA. Even after five adsorption–desorption cycles, Z@CA maintained a Cd(II) removal efficiency of 89.88 %. The results of the pot experiment showed that after applying Z@CA (2.5 w/w) in soil for 21 days, the content of bioavailable Cd(II) and total Cd(II) significantly decreased by 59.38 % and 1.75 %, respectively. The recovery rate of Z@CA reached 94.77 % and maintained its original intact structure. In addition, the Cd(II) content of water spinach was reduced by 91.43 % compared to the treatment without Z@CA, the weight, height, and relative chlorophyll content reaching 1.34, 1.73, and 1.49 times that of the treatment without Z@CA. The ideal application of Z@CA provides novel approaches and insights into the remediation of Cd(II)-contaminated soils.

In this paper, air-dried lake sludge was pretreated by ball milling, and then pyrolysed at 600°C to prepare lake sludge-derived ball milling biochar, and Fe 3 O 4 was loaded on lake sludge-derived ball milling biochar by chemical precipitation. Scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction were used to investigate and characterize the adsorbents. The results demonstrated that ball mill pretreatment and Fe 3 O 4 -loaded can effectively increase the content of O-containing groups in the adsorbent. The batch adsorption experiments revealed that Cd(II) removal followed the pseudo-second- order kinetic model and the Langmuir model. Additionally, the Cd(II) maximum adsorption by biochar (BC), MBBC and Fe 3 O 4 @MBBC was 31.33, 47.36 and 92.42 mg/g, respectively. The Cd(II) removal mechanisms were complexation, ion exchange, co-precipitation and electrostatic interaction. The Cd(II) removal efficiency on Fe 3 O 4 @MBBC was maintained at 91.35% after 5 adsorption– desorption experiments, indicating that Fe 3 O 4 @MBBC had the ability to be better applied for the removal of Cd(II)-containing wastewater.
