Improved Cadmium Removal Induced by Interaction of Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron and Microplastics Debris

Wenbo Zhu,Xin Qiao,Lan Ling

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) is one of the most prevalently used engineered nanomaterials for heavy metals removal. Microplastics (MPs) have been detected extensively in the environment, such as soil, surface water, groundwater, and water treatment plant. PVC MPs and Cd coexist in a variety of environment, and Cd compounds are often used as stabilizers in PVC production, which increases the likelihood of their coexistence. In this work, the influence of aged PVC MPs on Cd2+ removal with nZVI was evaluated. Spent nZVI after reaction with Cd2+ with and without MPs was characterized with scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The results showed that when MPs coexisted, the removal rate of Cd2+ with nZVI increased by up to 73.4%. Spent nZVI has more extensive oxidation, and has looser structure and higher specific surface area in a mixed contamination solution with trace MPs, resulting in high removal efficiency of Cd2+. Interaction between PVC MPs and nZVI shows positive promotion toward removal of Cd2+ with nZVI; thus, nZVI may have great potential for remediation of Cd in the water environment rich in PVC MPs.

Rational Surface Oxidation Promoted Long-Term Cd(II) Removal Performance of Mackinawite (FeS)

Shiyu Cao,Lin Zhang,Cancan Ling,Furong Guo,Meiqi Li,Chuan Liang,Jundi Cheng,Yanbiao Shi,Hongwei Sun,Lizhi Zhang

Mackinawite (FeS) is an excellent Cd(II) removal material but suffers from rapid reactivity loss. Herein, we demonstrate that rational surface preoxidation could enhance the single maximum adsorption capacity of mackinawite from 625.0 to 666.7 mg g–1 and also promote its air stability and reusability for long-term application. The Cd(II) removal processes were carefully characterized with a multifunctional in situ electrochemical device, theoretical calculation, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Characterization results revealed that surface preoxidation treatment changed the Cd(II) removal mechanism from ion exchange to ion-exchange coupled surface adsorption because surface preoxidized FeS possessed abundant surface −OH sites. This extra surface adsorption process offered surface preoxidized FeS a superior long-term Cd(II) removal performance of 1290.5 mg g–1 in 5 successive cycles, much higher than that of pristine FeS (842.4 mg g–1). This study highlights the importance of surface oxidation on the Cd(II) removal performance of mackinawite and also opens a new strategy to design and produce high-performance mackinawite nanocrystals for pollutant control and environmental remediation.

Removal of cadmium in water by potassium hydroxide activated biochar produced from Enteromorpha prolifera

Chuanbin Wang,Xiangping Li,Wenzhu Wu,Guanyi Chen,Junyu Tao

Cadmium emission from industrial processes is causing serious environmental problems, and biochar adsorption is an effective approach to control the cadmium content in wastewater. Producing biochar from Enteromorpha prolifera could not only provide sustainable biochar resource, but also promisingly solve the algae bloom problem worldwide. This work prepared Enteromorpha prolifera biochar (EPB) via slow pyrolysis method, the effect of different KOH to EPB mass ratios and different influencing parameters were also studied. Characterizations including SEM-EDS, FTIR and elemental analysis were comprehensively conducted to explore the physicochemical properties of EPB. The results showed that EPB activated by KOH with an impregnation ratio of 1:2 had the optimal cadmium removal performance, where a removal efficiency of 99.8% was obtained. Electrostatic interaction was a major adsorption mechanism. The isotherm analysis showed that Langmuir isotherm model could better fit the adsorption data. As a result, KOH activated EPB presented satisfactory features as a promising cadmium adsorbent with multiple environmental benefits.

Cadmium removal by FeOOH nanoparticles accommodated in biochar: Effect of the negatively charged functional groups in host

Shunli Wan,Yan Li,Shuo Cheng,Guowei Wu,Xuan Yang,Yu Wang,Liangmin Gao

Metallic oxide nanoparticles (NPs) anchored in biochar provide a promising measure forward into the scaled-up application of these NPs in water treatment , and reducing the size of the dwelled NPs is expected to boost the adsorption performance of biochar-based composites because of the size and surface effect. Nevertheless, it is still of great challenge to regulate the size of the impregnated NPs due to their intrinsic self-agglomeration caused by high surface energy . In this study, we fabricated the charged biochar (C-BC) bearing high-density negatively charged groups (i.e., carboxyl and hydroxyl groups) via HNO 3 oxidization to load the model metal oxide FeOOH NPs. The average sizes of anchored FeOOH NPs were ultrasmall, ranging from 19.9 ± 1.5 to 3.1 ± 0.5 nm, and decreased with the increased amount of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in C-BC. Whether in batch adsorption or fixed-bed column setting, adsorption of Cd(II) onto the as-made composites was greatly enhanced by carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in carrier. The normalized adsorption capacities of Cd(II) by ferric mass of the loaded FeOOH were 499.9–724.9 mg/g-Fe, approximately 18.6–27.1 and 2.51–3.64 folds over the bulky FeOOH and FeOOH-impregnated biochar. Our study results should provide a significant reference on how to acquire highly efficient biochar-based composites for water decontamination .

Cadmium removal from rice protein via synergistic treatment of rhamnolipids and F127/PAA hydrogels

Chong Shen,Shi Tang,Qin Meng

Heavy metal ions can accumulate in the area’s crop harvest, such as rice, via a tight binding with protein. Such binding paves great difficulties to remove heavy metal ions. This study aims to remove cadmium from contaminated rice protein using rhamnolipid biosurfactant together with Pluronic F127/poly (acrylic acid) (i.e., F127/PAA) hydrogels. The two-step consequential washing removed 92% of cadmium in rice protein, making the residual cadmium content below the safety level (<0.2 mg/kg) without impairing the main components and structure of rice protein. Interestingly, the washing by either rhamnolipids or hydrogels failed to effectively remove cadmium, indicating the synergistic effect of the two materials. Mechanistically, rhamnolipids with higher Cd 2+ binding constant compete with protein on binding with cadmium and then deliver it to F127/PAA hydrogels that present highest Cd 2+ adsorptive capability for immobilization. In considering that the F127/PAA hydrogels are reusable, this treatment is low-cost, safe and effective for removal of cadmium from polluted rice products.

Enhanced removal of cadmium from wastewater by electro-assisted cementation process: A peculiar Cd reduction on Zn anode

Wenjuan Zhang,Liu Xia,Kashif Mairaj Deen,Edouard Asselin,Baozhong Ma,Chengyan Wang

Cadmium recovery from wastewater is important to prevent water pollution and add value to the circular economy. Cementation is a widely applied method for Cd removal but this process is found less efficient. Herein, a novel electro-assisted cementation process is proposed, which enables effective Cd removal and recovery from Zn processing wastewater. Under optimal conditions, 98.5 % of dissolved Cd was removed and recovered having 94.1 % purity. More importantly, a peculiar Cd reduction on the Zn anode was observed and the mechanism is explained based on the electrochemical test and experimental results. By applying a cell potential of 0.5 V, the negative surface potential of Zn and its localized dissolution facilitated Cd deposition on the Zn anode by suppressing H 2 generation. Moreover, in contrast to the conventional cementation process, the formation of Cd dendritic structures on the Zn anode avoided full surface coverage, thus resulting in high cementation efficiency. In summary, this process presents great potential for the efficient removal of Cd from wastewaters and the findings offer new insights into the enhancement mechanism of electro-assisted cementation.

Cadmium removal from simulated groundwater using alumina nanoparticles: behaviors and mechanisms

Neel Kamal Koju,Xin Song,Qing Wang,Zhihao Hu,Claudio Colombo

Cadmium (Cd), one of the most toxic contaminants in groundwater, can cause a severe threat to human health and ecological systems. In this study, alumina nanoparticles were synthesized and tested for high-efficiency Cd removal from simulated groundwater. Furthermore, the synthesized alumina nanoparticles were successfully modified using negatively charged glycerol, to alleviate the challenge of its low mobility in groundwater for the Cd removal. The maximum removal efficiency of both synthesized and glycerol-modified alumina nanoparticles were more than 99%. The sorption isotherm and kinetic data of both synthesized and glycerol-modified alumina nanoparticles were best fitted to the Freundlich model and the pseudo-second-order model, respectively, indicating that the sorption of Cd ions occurs on heterogeneous surfaces of both alumina nanoparticles via the chemisorption mechanism. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis revealed the presence of Cd peak in both sorbents after contact with Cd. In addition, the FTIR analyses demonstrated that hydroxyl group participated in the sorption of Cd on both synthesized and glycerol-modified alumina nanoparticles, while other glycerol associated groups contributed to the removal of Cd ions by the glycerol-modified alumina nanoparticles. It was concluded that Cd removal by synthesized and glycerol-modified alumina nanoparticles were mainly due to ion exchange and electrostatic attraction, respectively. Desorption experiment suggested that both alumina nanoparticles are effective and practically significant sorbents to remediate Cd from contaminated groundwater. However, the stronger bond between Cd and glycerol-modified alumina, plus its potential of higher mobility due to the negative charge on the surface, warrant glycerol-modified alumina nanoparticles a better performance in remediating Cd contaminated groundwater than that of the synthesized alumina nanoparticles.

Green dual-organic salt activation synthesis of hierarchical N, S co-doping artificial humic acid-derived porous carbon toward superior cadmium capture in asymmetric capacitive deionization

Baochuan Qi,Weihong Chen,Jie Zhang,Wanying Xie,Dayi Qian,Zhengjun Yi,Hongzhi Ma

Efficient hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) and heteroatom doping electrode materials remain a formidable challenge for advanced capacitive deionization (CDI) systems for cadmium-containing wastewater purification. This study reports the successful preparation of asymmetric CDI cathodes for the electrosorption of Cd 2+ by a controlled dual-organic-salt activation strategy, and its adsorption performance and underlying mechanism were comprehensively investigated. Compared with a single K 2 C 2 O 4 activation strategy, incorporating C 8 H 16 N 2 O 6 S 2 K 2 during activation induced a chain activation–gas etching reaction, resulting in a carbon material with high heteroatom doping, exceptional specific surface area an optimized pore distribution, and abundant edge defects. Further, the optimized N, S-doped HPC2 exhibited a high specific capacitance (118 F g −1 ), enhanced reversibility, and efficient electron transfer, contributing to an exceptional electrochemical Cd 2+ adsorption capacity (125.13 mg g −1 at 1.2 V). Meanwhile, it exhibited outstanding selectivity ( K d  = 18,179 mL g −1 ), remarkable cycling stability (91 % retention over 20 cycles), and superior practical performance, achieving ultralow Cd 2+ concentrations (<1 μg L −1 ) in real desulfurization wastewater via multi-stage asymmetric CDI. This work exemplifies the effectiveness of the one-step method to achieve accurate regulation of pore architecture and heteroatom co-doping, thereby providing novel insights into the mechanism of cadmium removal.

Eco-utilization of hierarchically structured calcium silicate hydrate for efficient removal of cadmium from synthetic wastewater

Hongxia Fang,Chuncai Zhou,Shihai Xu,Jiaqian Shi,Yunhu Hu,Guijian Liu

Developing a low-cost and high-performance adsorbent to eliminate cadmium (Cd) pollution in farmland irrigation water is highly desired. Herein, a hierarchically structured calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) material was prepared from the alumina-extracted residue (AR) of coal fly ash to remove low concentration of cadmium [Cd(II)] (0.1 mg/L) from simulated farmland irrigation water. The results indicated that CSH with different Si/Ca ratios exhibited excellent adsorption performance with a removal efficiency of over 90 %. Among them, CSH with Si/Ca ratios of 0.83 (CSH-0.83) had the highest removal rate, reaching 99.38 %. Under the optimum operation conditions of adsorbent dosage of 0.04 g/L, pH value of 4.0, contact time of 120 min, and initial concentration of 0.06 mg/L, the maximum adsorption rate of Cd(II) was 99.42 %. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics results showed that the adsorption and desorption process of Cd(II) by CSH-0.83 could be well fitted by pseudo-second-order (R 2  = 99 %) and its adsorption isotherms accorded with the Langmuir model (R 2  = 98 %). The adsorption mechanism was mainly chemosorption. The released calcium (Ca 2+ ) and hydroxyl (OH − ) from the CSH-0.83 reacted with Cd(II) via complexation, or Cd(II) underwent ion exchange with Ca 2+ adsorbed on the surface or edge of the particle. Furthermore, CSH-0.83 exhibited good stability and regeneration capacity, and its adsorption efficiency remained at 86.45 % in the sixth cycle. This study provides new ideas for high-value utilization of similar solid waste of aluminosilicates .

Self-separating core-shell spheres with a carboxymethyl chitosan/acrylic acid/Fe3O4 composite core for soil Cd removal

Tian Hu,Bu-Ning Liu,Huaitian Bu,Han-Jian Hu,Qi-Shun Zhu,Shipeng Tang,Yongtao Li,Jinjin Wang,Gang-Biao Jiang

Cadmium (Cd) removal from soil is crucial as Cd enters the food chain and affect food safety, thus impose severe threaten to human health. We developed PPC@PC-Fe, a dual-functional core-shell sphere for efficient soil Cd reduction. The shell (PPC) was composed of encapsulated citric acid (CA) in a polylactic acid (PLA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) network, which endows a function of activating Cd; and the core (PC-Fe) consisted of a polyacrylic acid/carboxymethyl chitosan (PAA/CMC) hydrogel with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles to adsorb adjacent activated Cd. Upon water contact, the shell dissolved, releasing CA to activate soil Cd. Simultaneously, the swellable PC-Fe core absorbed water and expanded in size, promoting the disintegration of PLA in the shell, which triggered the automatic separation of core from shell, enabling the exposed PC-Fe core to rapidly adsorb Cd. Furthermore, the PC-Fe core can be magnetically removed after adsorption of Cd. Soil culture tests showed that 2 % PPC@PC-Fe reduced soil Cd from 6.009 mg/kg to 4.834 mg/kg in 10 days, with the acid-soluble Cd being the predominantly target to be activated and remove. This study demonstrates an effective stepwise activation and adsorption mechanism by a single carrier, with simple magnetic collection minimizing secondary pollution. It offers an innovative approach to the remediation of cadmium-contaminated sites in the field.

Magnetic chitosan-modified apple branch biochar for cadmium removal from acidic solution

Ma Yuanjie,Qiao Cong

A magnetized functional biochar (MCBC) with excellent adsorption properties for Cd 2+ removal from aqueous solutions was prepared using apple tree branches as feedstock and chitosan as the surface modifier. Batch adsorption experiment was carried out to examine adsorption performance of biochar before and after modification. Characterization techniques were employed to analyze physicochemical differences of biochar and to investigate Cd²⁺ adsorption mechanisms. The results showed that after chitosan modification and iron oxide loading, the surface of MCBC possessed abundant oxygen-containing groups and amino groups, which served as available active sites for Cd²⁺ removal. At a solution pH of 5.0, Cd²⁺ concentrations ranging from 5 to 300 mg/L, and a temperature of 298 K, the saturation adsorption capacity of MCBC (166.42 mg/g) was significantly higher than that of chitosan-modified biochar (132.28 mg/g) and original biochar (50.58 mg/g). The remova l processes were effectively characterized by Pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model. The primary mechanisms of Cd²⁺ adsorption included coordination, precipitation, and cation-π interactions. The removal processes were spontaneous, endothermic, and primarily driven by chemical interactions. After five regenerations, the removal amounts of MCBC for Cd²⁺ remained above 90%. The study suggested that magnetic chitosan-modified biochar was effectively applied for remediating cadmium-contaminated water.

Modeling and optimization of porous aerogel adsorbent for removal of cadmium from crab viscera homogenate using response surface method and artificial neural network

Shuaizhong Zhang,Yongkai Yuan,Chengzhen Liu,Yong Yang,Dandan Zhang,Shuang Liu,Dongfeng Wang,Ying Xu

The purpose of this study was to establish an efficient modern strategy for the reduction and control of cadmium (Cd) content in the crab viscera homogenate. To this end, the coupling of an artificial neural network (ANN) technique with the genetic algorithm (GA) method and compared the performance of GA-ANN with response surface methodology (RSM) were demonstrated in the prediction and optimization of the ultrasonic-assisted adsorption of Cd using a aerogel adsorbent. On the basis of single factor test, the data sample was established by Box–Behnken Design, and the effects of ultrasonic time, temperature, the addition amount of aerogel, and pH on the removal rate of Cd were researched. The results revealed that the RSM and GA-ANN models had relative errors and coefficients of determination R 2 values of 3.90%, 0.8440, and 1.79%, 0.9283, respectively, suggesting that GA-ANN is more accurate than RSM. The maximum percentage of Cd extracted (79.13%) was obtained using GA-ANN model as ultrasonic time of 87 min, temperature of 81 °C, adsorbent dosage of 0.07 g, pH of 3.20. In conclusion, the present results provide an effective method for optimizing multi-technology coupling to reduce the toxic heavy metal content in aquatic products.
