Soil mineral properties significantly influence the mobility of Cd(II) within the soil matrix. However, the limited understanding of how microbial metabolism affects mineral structure at the microscale poses challenges for in situ remediation. Here, we designed a model calcium-phosphate system in a urea-rich environment to explore the impact of different microbial activation levels on Cd(II) fixation at mineral interfaces. Findings indicate that bacteria affected the morphological structure of the minerals and the amount of carbonate incorporation (average 5.4 %), thereby enhancing Cd(II) immobilization capacity (up to 9.6 times). This process is influenced by the intensity of bacterial activation, as reflected in their urease activity. Extracellular substances secreted by bacteria are also essential for activating minerals, contributing to a sustained decrease in their surface potential. The introduction of activated minerals in potting experiments markedly stimulated the soil urease activity, promoting the enrichment of functional bacteria and facilitating Cd(II) passivation, thereby reducing Cd(II) uptake by vegetables. An extensive soil survey further corroborated a linkage between soil total phosphorus and urease activity, indirectly emphasizing the universality of phosphate mineral-urease microbial interactions and their critical role in the morphological transformation of Cd(II). Our findings highlight the functional dynamics of urease microorganisms in shaping soil mineral landscapes and regulating heavy metal mobility, with broad implications for soil microscale remediation strategies.

Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) by functional microbes is crucial for optimizing nitrogen preservation and sustainable utilization in agricultural soils, particularly in paddy soils where nitrogen management is essential for crop yields, while the biocatalytic efficiency for this process is always limited, especially in soils polluted with heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd). In this study, we strategically designed a heavy metal-resistant nanogel (Bg) material with variable functional groups incorporating imidazole, carboxyl, and thiol groups and hybridized this material with DNRA functional strain, Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, resulting in a biohybrid system. Notably, the biohybrid system efficiently catalyzed DNRA processes, achieving up to around 2–4 times increase in nitrogen transformation rates in the absence/presence of Cd2+ compared to S. oneidensis MR-1 alone because the Bg material from the biohybrid system can promote DNRA by functional strain and mediate Cd immobilization processes through distinct functional groups. Within the biohybrid-mediated DNRA process, the thiol groups derived from Bg act as electron shuttles, significantly promoting the extent and rate of DNRA. For the Cd immobilization process, the imidazole and carboxyl groups within Asp-xxx-His sequences from Bg serve as primary Cd binding sites, as confirmed by dynamic force spectroscopy (DFS). This study provides valuable insights into the precise control of nitrogen cycling and sustainable utilization in agricultural soils, highlighting the significant role of the designed biohybrid materials in enhancing both DNRA efficiency and heavy metal immobilization.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution in sediments has become an urgent environmental problem. Humus mediated dissimilatory iron reduction and phosphorus solubilizing bacteria (PSB) were widely used for Cd immobilization. Here, we utilized humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) to promote the efficiency of iron reduction by Geobacter metallireducens GS-15 to immobilize Cd with the involvement of PSB. The results showed that both HA and FA can facilitate the reduction of Fe(III) and the release of P in ferric phosphate minerals, and then the immobilization of Cd. The immobilization of dissolved Cd 2 + in HA, FA and BCK groups were 76.25 %, 65.25 % and 63.58 %, respectively. HA and FA promoted the growth of PSB and the secretion of acetic acid, high concentration of acetic acid provided sufficient nutrients for the growth of iron-reducing bacteria. Thereby, high concentration of Fe(II) facilitated the recrystallization, which effectively immobilized Cd 2+ . Compared to the CK group, the HA and the FA groups increased the proportion of exchanged Cd converted to combined Cd in secondary minerals by 25.32 % and 19.16 %, respectively. The findings reveal that enhanced effect of HA on microbial iron reduction coupled with PSB can facilitate the immobilization of Cd, providing a promising strategy for the remediation of Cd-contaminated sediments.

This study is to prepare a phosphorus-modified dolomite passivation material (P-DO) through hydrothermal method and synthesis for the remediation of cadmium (Cd) in acidic soil. The surface morphology and elemental composition of dolomite and its modified materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The adsorption process was simulated using adsorption models to elucidate the Cd immobilization mechanisms. Experimental results demonstrated optimal alignment with the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, achieving adsorption equilibrium within 8 h. Spectroscopic analysis revealed three primary binding mechanisms: coordination through oxygen-containing carbon groups, Mg-O complexation, and phosphate ligand exchange via P-OH groups. Soil remediation trials established an optimal P-DO dosage of 1%, the passivation efficiency of Cd in soil by P-DO was 54.9%. Furthermore, this treatment decreased DTPA-extractable Cd by 12.696 mg·kg - ¹ and reduced acid-soluble Cd fractions by 42.3%. In summary, the modification of dolomite enables synergistic solid waste valorization and immobilization of Cd, positioning it as a high-performance functional material for sustainable remediation technologies.
