Co-Pyrolyzed Rice Husk and Cow Bone In Situ Cd-Remediation for Corn Plant Growth. A Comprehensive Case Study

Liu Caiying,Liu Yanyan,Feng Jiapeng,Li Yaru,Tao Jun,Xie Xiaoxiao

The paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of biochar prepared from the co-pyrolysis of rice husk and cow bone (RHCBC) for in situ remediation and amelioration of Cd-contaminated soil. Effects of RHCBC on Cd bioavailability in soil and Cd uptake in corn growth were investigated through cultivation experiments and pot experiments. The results showed that the addition of RHCBC in the Cd-contaminated soil achieved the increase of soil pH, CEC, and SOM, whereas the soil available Cd content was reduced by 29.08–51.06%, which was proved by the transformation of Cd from acid soluble and exchangeable state to residual state. Furthermore, the nutrient contents of soil were also increased by 82.41–230.09% for alkali-hydrolyzable N, 66.81–144.03% for available P, and 16.20–77.70% for available K, respectively, which promoted the growth of corn. Overall, it is a promising strategy to employ RHCBC for in situ remediation of Cd-contaminated soil and promotion of plant growth as efficient soil amendment.

Change in phytoextraction of Cd by rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) with application rate of organic acids and the impact of Cd migration from bulk soil to the rhizosphere

Dongmei Qiao,Hongfei Lu,Xiaoxian Zhang

Adding exogenous low-molecular weight organic acids is an effective technique to improve phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soil and has been well documented, but how acid application rate affects remediation efficiency and its underlying limiting factors remains elusive. We investigated this using pot experiments with rapeseed ( Brassica napus L.) as the model plant. Plastic pots packed with a sandy loam contaminated by Cd at 4.838 mg/kg were amended with acetic acid, oxalic acid , citric acid , malic acid and tartaric acid, respectively, at an application rate gradient varying from 0.0 to 12.0 mmol/kg. Plants in each pot were harvested after growing for five months, and we then measured the exchangeable, carbonate, Fe–Mn oxide, organic and residual Cd in the rhizosphere, as well as Cd in both roots and shoots. The results showed that all organic acids improved plant uptake of Cd and, compared with the control without acid addition, they could improve Cd uptake by more than 100%. The enhanced Cd extraction was due to the increase in exchangeable Cd in the rhizosphere. Plant Cd was weakly correlated to the amount of Cd lost from a unit volume of the rhizosphere due to root extraction ( R 2  = 0.06), but a good negative correlation was found between them after normalizing the lost Cd by root biomass ( R 2  = 0.36). Mass balance analysis revealed that the average Cd content in soil (rhizosphere and bulk soils combined) was much higher than the Cd content in the rhizosphere, and the improved Cd mobility after acid addition was thus due to the increased chelation. As diffusion of ligands in water is one order in magnitude smaller than diffusion of Cd ions, our results suggested that Cd migration from the bulk soil into the rhizosphere was a major factor limiting Cd phytoextraction by rapeseed after adding the exogenous organic acids.

Amendment-Enhanced Phytoextraction of Cadmium from Contaminated Soil Integrating with Ramie as Hyperaccumulator Plant

Zhang Zhen,Zhang Haotian,Woon Kok Sin,Zhu Xiaohu,Sui Yuhong,Luo Zifeng,Chen Lili,Yang Xiaoming,Gao Junyi,Wen Hongping,Jing Ran,Liu Tongzhou

Enhanced phytoextraction of metals using amendments and hyperaccumulator plants is a promising alternative to expensive traditional remediation techniques. The present study comprehensively investigated the effects of six amendments on both mobility and phytoextraction of Cd and the feasibility of integrating amendment with Ramie as a hyperaccumulator plant on Cd-contaminated soil remediation. The leaching of Cd from contaminated soil was significantly enhanced by two chelating agents (i.e., ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and ethyleneglycoltetraacetic acid (EGTA)), followed by two natural organic acids (i.e., citric acid and tartaric acid), and lastly, two rhizobacteria (i.e., Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas fluorescens ). Further, the application of EDTA and EGTA had inhibitory effects on the growth of Ramie. The application of two organic acids and two rhizobacteria increased the dry biomass yields of roots, stems, and leaves. In terms of the dry biomass of Ramie, 32.7, 23.4, 50.6, and 53.1% of increases were obtained from the applications of citric acid, tartaric acid, B. subtilis , and P. fluorescens , respectively, as compared with that without any amendment applied. Meanwhile, the applications of all amendments were observed to increase Cd concentrations in aerial parts of the plants, and they were ranked in descending order of Cd accumulation: EDTA > EGTA > tartaric acid > citric acid >  B. subtilis ≈ P. fluorescens . Taking Cd removal efficiency, potential environmental risk, and economic factor into consideration, EDTA and citric acid-enhanced phytoremediation using Ramie were feasible and promising approaches for remediating Cd-contaminated soil in real practice.

Activated low-grade phosphate rocks for simultaneously reducing the phosphorus loss and cadmium uptake by rice in paddy soil

Xiangqing Shao,Huanli Yao,Shihao Cui,Yutao Peng,Xing Gao,Chengpeng Yuan,Xian Chen,Yueming Hu,Xiaoyun Mao

Cadmium (Cd) pollution and phosphorus (P) leaching in paddy soils has raised the global concern. In this study, two kinds of the low grade phosphate rocks activated by the sodium lignosulfonate (SL) and humic acid (HA) were fabricated for soil Cd passivation and reduction of the soil P leaching simultaneously. The mechanisms of the Cd adsorption and passivation by the activated phosphate rocks (APRs) were investigated through the batch experiment and the indoor culture test ( i.e. , incubation and pot experiments) in the Cd-polluted paddy soil. The effects of the APRs on the potted rice growth, uptake of Cd by rice and P loss were also studied. In comparison with the superphosphate treatment, the cumulative P loss from SL- and HA-APRs were reduced by the 65.2% and 65.3%. In terms of the Cd passivation, the Cd adsorbed on the APRs was through the chemical ways ( i.e. , ligand exchange and the formation of internal complexes). The application of the APRs significantly decreased the soil exchangeable Cd by 48.9%–55.0%, while the Fe/Mn oxides-bound Cd and residual Cd increased significantly by 19.6%–20.3% and 50.7%–69.4%, respectively. Pot experiment also suggested that both the APRs treatments (SL- and HA-APRs) significantly diminished soil Cd accumulation in rice (by 72.7% and 62.8%) coupling with the significantly decreased P leaching. These results provide a sustainable way to explore a novel cost-effective, high-efficient and bi-functional mineral-based soil amendments for environmental remediation.

Assessing the Effects of Cadmium Stress on the Growth, Physiological Characteristics, and Metabolic Profiling of Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Using HPLC-QTOF/MS

Zhenni Lan,Qing He,Mingxia Zhang,Huahong Liu,Liusen Fang,Jinfang Nie

Cadmium (Cd) pollution is an important environmental problem, as it is easily absorbed by plants and gradually accumulates in the human body through the food chain. This study aimed to elucidate the changes in the metabolic response of the rice cultivar “TanLiangYou215” under Cd stress. Rice was grown in soil culture at 0 (Control), 2 (Low group), and 10 (High group) mg/kg CdCl2for 90 days. The ultrastructural, Cd content, antioxidant activity, and metabolic changes to the rice in different tissues were analyzed. Phenotypic characterization and ultrastructure showed that the rice roots and leaves were significantly damaged and plant growth was inhibited in the High group, while plant growth was promoted in the Low group. Overall, Cd showed a regularity of “low promotion and high inhibition”. Physiological indices revealed that rice was significantly affected by Cd stress. Compared to the Control, Cd stress resulted in higher antioxidant enzyme activities, and the Low group suffered less oxidative damage than the High group. Metabolomic studies revealed that Cd stress significantly altered the metabolic profiles of rice plants. Rice responded to Cd stress by upregulating amino acids and regulating related pathways, including alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism, and arginine and proline metabolism. The significant expression of flavonoids with antioxidant properties helped rice resist the oxidative damage caused by Cd accumulation in the root tissue; Cd stress significantly downregulated glycerophospholipid metabolism in the stem and leaf tissues, which affected the cellular activities in rice stem and leaf tissues. We investigated the effects of Cd stress on ultrastructure, antioxidant activity, and metabolic changes in different tissues of the rice variety TLY215. Moreover, the different tissues of TLY215 can regulate these metabolic pathways to resist Cd stress, which provides valuable insights into the response of TLY215 to different concentrations of Cd.Keywords:cadmium (Cd);rice (Oryza sativaL.);phenotypic characterization;physiological activity;metabolomics

Salinization and heavy metal cadmium impair growth but have contrasting effects on defensive colony formation of Scenedesmus obliquus

Xuanhe Jia,Yueqiang Pan,Xuexia Zhu

Driven by anthropogenic activities, freshwater salinization has become an emerging global environmental issue . Recent studies indicate that salinization increases the mobility of heavy metals in soil and causes higher flux into surface waterbodies. The present study assessed the combined effects of salinization (0, 3, 6 PSU) and the heavy metal Cd 2+ (0, 0.2, 0.4 mg L −1 ) on the anti-grazing colony formation and population growth of Scenedesmus obliquus , a common freshwater alga. The results showed that the increase in salinity promoted colony formation of S. obliquus with or without the presence of grazing cues and, in contrast, Cd 2+ contamination depressed the defensive colony formation of S. obliquus to Daphnia filtrate. The increase in both salinity and Cd 2+ concentration depressed the population growth of S. obliquus , including impaired photosynthesis and a decreased population growth rate. Salinization moderated the negative effects of Cd 2+ on defensive colony formation of S. obliquus , suggesting increased absorption of Cd 2+ ions by a thicker outer layer of the algal cell wall under saltier conditions. As a result, larger defensive colonies of S. obliquus under freshwater salinization may cause higher bioaccumulation of heavy metals by algal cells and heavier influence on zooplankton. This study provides evidence that freshwater salinization could interfere with plankton interactions by affecting algal defense and growth, which may lead to bottom-up cascading effects on freshwater food webs.

Combined Effects of Bacteria and Hydroxyapatite on Rice and Microorganisms in Cadmium Contaminated Soil

Xu Hong,Zhang Yuanke,Qi Yilin,Ma Liang,Ran Song,Chen Qiming,Zhang Cheng,Zeng Xiaoxi

Cadmium (Cd) has caused serious soil environmental problems and directly harming plants, microorganisms, and even humans. It is vital and necessary to develop effective methods to solve the problem of soil Cd pollution and improve soil environment. In this study, alkali-producing bacteria combined with hydroxyapatite (HAP) to explore their effects on rice Cd accumulation, rice yield, soil available Cd, and soil microorganisms. Results showed that the soil available Cd content decreased in all groups. The bacteria combined with 0.5% and 2% ratio HAP treatment groups decreased soil available Cd by 7.17% and 0.58%, respectively. However, Cd content of grains in the former treatment group was as high as 0.27 mg/kg, and the latter treatment group was 0.18 mg/kg, they were lower than control group (0.31 mg/kg). As to the rice yield, most treatment groups can increase rice yield comparing to control group, and the bacteria combined with 2% ratio HAP increased by 13.79%. On the soil microorganisms, treatment groups had no obvious impact on diversity of soil microbial communities (p > 0.05), but there were significant differences in phylum classification, and the bacteria combined with 2% ratio HAP had more complex network of soil microorganisms. Besides, the bacteria could to adapt to this soil environment and colonize. So, the bacteria combined with 2% ratio HAP had great potentials for Cd contaminated soil remediation.

Montmorillonite-mediated electron distribution of zirconium phosphate for accelerating remediation of cadmium-contaminated water and soil

Haojie Zhang,Xiongbo Dong,Huaming Yang

Rapid and efficient remediation of heavy metal-contaminated water and soil bodies has been a hot topic in ecological remediation. However, designing and synthesizing green remediation materials with fast kinetics and high adsorption capacity is still challenging. In this study, a novel heavy metal remediation material (Mt@ZrP) has been prepared using montmorillonite to induce the structural rearrangement of zirconium phosphate (ZrP). The results showed that montmorillonite could mediate the external electron distribution of ZrP , thus increasing its O 1 s binding energy. Distinct from the electrostatic adsorption of bare ZrP, Mt .@ZrP with higher orbital binding energy led to an extra adsorption mode with internal spherical coordination. Such characteristics dramatically shortened the adsorption equilibrium time (23 min) and enhanced the adsorption capacity (275.6 mg/g-ZrP) of Mt.@ZrP for Cd removal in comparison to those of bare ZrP (220 min, 196.1 mg/g-ZrP). As for soil remediation , Mt.@ZrP presented a faster Cd removal rate than bare ZrP. The residual fraction increased from 22.03% (control) to 28.47% (Mt@ZrP, 1 wt%) and 37.54% (Mt@ZrP, 3 wt%), which significantly decreased the biological efficacy of Cd in the soil. These findings could provide a novel strategy for the design and synthesis of excellent remediation materials for the rapid and efficient removal of heavy metals in water and soil.

Effect of gluconic acid rinsing on cadmium decontamination from rice protein

Dianying Shen,Ge Song,Xinyang Sun,Fengjiao Fan,Jian Ding,Yong Fang,Peng Li

Cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice protein has long been considered a significant threat to human health. In the present study, a costless and effective method based on gluconic acid (GA) rinsing of rice protein was developed to reduce Cd contamination in rice protein. Moreover, the effect of GA on the structural and functional properties of rice protein was evaluated. With liquid–solid ratio of 30 mL/g and oscillation time of 120 min, 96.0% and 93.6% of Cd were eliminated from rice protein-H and rice protein-L, respectively. In addition, the results of scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, and sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analyses showed that GA treatment did not significantly change the structural properties of rice protein. However, GA treatment increased foaming properties, water holding capacity, and oil holding capacity of the rice protein, without affecting its further applicability. Thus, the proposed GA rinsing method can be considered a green and efficient strategy to solve the issue brought by Cd residual contamination in rice protein. Practical Application Given the advantages of green and efficient agriculture, gluconic acid (GA) has emerged as a powerful strategy for removing the Cd from rice protein. The method developed herein showed great potentials for applications in the manufacture of rice-based products.

Comparative physiological and transcriptomic analyses reveal enhanced mitigation of cadmium stress in peanut by combined Fe3O4/ZnO nanoparticles

Huashuai Wang,Can Hao,Lingyun Chen,Dunyi Liu

Cadmium (Cd) pollution poses a significant threat to food safety and human health. Foliar spraying of nanomaterials has been widely used to mitigate Cd stress in agriculture. However, the effects and synergistic mechanisms of various nanomaterial combinations on Cd resistance remain unclear. This study compared the impacts of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs), ZnO NPs, and their combinations at different concentrations (50–400 mg/L) on the growth and physiology of peanuts under Cd-stress. Results showed that combined-NPs reduced Cd accumulation and enhanced plant growth more effectively than single-NPs. Specifically, the concentrations of Cd in roots and shoots were reduced by 52.13 % and 47.83 %, respectively, while biomass increased by 42.86 % for roots and 100.17 % for shoots. A concentration of 150 mg/L of combined NPs was optimal, reducing root Cd concentration from 0.619 mg/g to 0.245 mg/g and shoot from 0.187 mg/g to 0.148 mg/g. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that combined NPs upregulated oxidative stress-related genes ( GST23 , POD2 ) to strengthen antioxidant defenses. Simultaneously, they also downregulated metal transports ( ABCC2 , Nramp2 , ABCG29 , ABCG2 ), potentially limiting Cd uptake. These findings reveal the synergistic mechanism of enhancing antioxidant systems and regulating metal transport pathways, offering a new strategy to develop combined nano-fertilizers that combat Cd pollution in similar crops.

Cadmium immobilization in lake sediment using different crystallographic manganese oxides: Performance and mechanism

Changsheng Jin,Zhongwu Li,Mei Huang,Xiang Ding,Mi Zhou,Changqing Cai,Jia Chen

Cd pollution in sediments poses severe threats to environmental safety and human health. Mn oxides have potential merit for the remediation of Cd pollution in sediment but have not received enough attention. Although Mn oxides have proven effective as adsorbents for removing heavy metals from water/wastewater, the performance and the underlying mechanism of Cd immobilization in sediments by Mn oxides remain unclear. Here, three crystallographic Mn oxides δ-MnO 2 , γ-MnOOH, and Mn 3 O 4 were used as amendments to investigate their potential for the in situ immobilization of Cd in lake sediment . Experimental data showed that when the sediment samples were treated with synthesized Mn oxides at dosages of 2% and 6% (w/w) for 56 days, the TCLP (toxicity characteristic leaching procedure) leachable Cd in the sediment decreased by 43.9–66.81%, and the PBET (physiologically based extraction test) extractable Cd decreased by 45.16–99.40%. Additionally, the acid-soluble fraction of Cd was partially transformed to a residual fraction, resulting in a 27.55–35.49% decrease in acid-soluble Cd and a 25.16–30.36% increase in the residual Cd fraction. Sediment pH and oxidation-reduction potential were important factors affecting the bioavailability of Cd in the remediation process. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy , X-ray diffractometer , Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis illustrated that the interaction between the amendment and Cd mainly involved complexation with O-containing groups, ion-exchange as > OCd + , and precipitation with carbonate. The efficient remediation capacity and associated mechanism for Mn oxides provide insights for the improved restoration of heavy metal-contaminated sediment.

Ball-milled sepiolite/phosphate rock for simultaneous remediation of cadmium-contaminated farmland and alleviation of phosphorus deficiency symptoms in pepper

Jianhua Qu,Yuhui Li,Hebang Sun,Ruixin Liu,Yue Han,Fuxuan Bi,Hongli Fan,Guosheng Zhang,Yupeng Zhang,Yifan Wang,Weidong Cao,Ying Zhang

Herein, ball-milled combination of sepiolite and phosphate rock was carried out for synergistic passivation of Cd in soil and alleviation of phosphorus deficiency in pepper. The as-prepared BM-Sep 2 PR 1 exhibited extensive pH adaptability and fast uptake for Cd(II) with maximal uptake capacity of 78.67 mg/g. After application of 0.5 % BM-Sep 2 PR 1 , the bioavailability of Cd in soil decreased by 58.2 %, and its unstable forms declined by 57.0 % with transformation into residual speciation such as Cd 3 (PO 4 ) 2 and Cd n Ca 5-n (PO 4 ) 3 OH. Moreover, BM-Sep 2 PR 1 significantly decreased the amount of Cd in pepper shoot (77.8 %) and root (54.8 %), and the bioconcentration factors (soil-root) and translocation factors (root-shoot) were significantly reduced by 54.8 % and 50.8 %, respectively. Notably, the soil available phosphorus, pepper root vitality, and photosynthetic pigment content increased by 202.8 %, 136.4 %, and 58.4 %, respectively, thus significantly alleviating the phosphorus deficiency symptoms of pepper. Additionally, BM-Sep 2 PR 1 improved soil microbial community structure, especially enhanced the abundance of microorganism involved in nutrient cycling and heavy metal resistance. The Cd passivation mechanisms of BM-Sep 2 PR 1 were identified as pore filling, electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, surface complexation, and chemical precipitation. Overall, this study provided a potential strategy for synergetic soil remediation and plant nutrient supplement by using ball-milled functional materials.
