The potential for toxic elements to contaminate soil has been extensively studied. Therefore, the development of cost-effective methods and materials to prevent toxic element residues in the soil from entering the food chain is of great significance. Industrial and agricultural wastes such as wood vinegar (WV), sodium humate (NaHA) and biochar (BC) were used as raw materials in this study. HA was obtained by acidizing NaHA with WV and then loaded onto BC, which successfully prepared a highly efficient modification agent for nickel-contaminated soil, namely biochar-humic acid material (BC-HA). The characteristics and parameters of BC-HA were obtained by FTIR, SEM, EDS, BET and XPS. The chemisorption of Ni(II) ions by BC-HA conforms to the quasi-second-order kinetic model. Ni(II) ions are distributed on the heterogeneous surface of BC-HA by multimolecular layer adsorption, which accords with the Freundlich isotherm model. WV promotes better binding of HA and BC by introducing more active sites, thus increasing the adsorption capacity of Ni(II) ions on BC-HA. Ni(II) ions in soil are anchored to BC-HA by physical and chemical adsorption, electrostatic interaction, ion exchange and synergy.

Ferrate, as an internal oxidation modifier, is rarely used in the preparation of magnetic biochar. This research promotes rice shell charcoal modified by K 2 FeO 4 preparation of oxygen-containing groups and ɤ-Fe 2 O 3 magnetic biochar. Magnetic rice husk biochar (MBC) is prepared to adsorb Ni(II) from aqueous solutions. The effects of various parameters on the adsorption of Ni(II) by MBC have been studied, and the results show that MBC has an excellent adsorption capacity for Ni(II). At 25 °C and pH 7.0, the removal rate of Ni(II) reaches 96.1% within 24 h at an adsorbent dose of 0.5 g/L when the initial Ni(II) concentration is 20 mg/L. The kinetic model conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the intra-particle diffusion model within 36 h. Moreover, the adsorption data were successfully reproduced by the Langmuir isotherm, and the maximum adsorption capacity is 42.69 mg/g. The adsorption data conform to the D-R model, and the calculated average adsorption free energy is 41.03 kJ/mol, indicating that the adsorption process is mainly chemical adsorption. Thermodynamic study indicates that the endothermic adsorption process is spontaneous and can be promoted by the increase in temperature. This study was expected to provide a reference and theoretical basis for the treatment of Ni(II)-containing wastewater using modified rice husk biochar.

A series of polymer brushes were formed on the surface of mesoporous silica microspheres by copolymerizing 1-vinyl imidazole and acrylic acid through reversible-addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, with pI-switchable property and high grafting groups content. The resulting materials (SiO 2 @poly(VI- co -AA)) were then applied for removing Ni(II) from aqueous solution with a fast adsorption rate, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 62.81 mg/g. Significantly, the removal rate of 30 mg/L of Ni(II) could reach up to 99.40%, and the adsorbent also exhibited a good reusability, with the desorption efficiency of over 99%. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism was supposed to be electrostatic interaction and complexation characterized by Zeta potentials and XPS . It implied that the SiO 2 @poly(VI- co -AA) microspheres could be considered as a potential adsorbent for removing Ni(II) from wastewater, and was expected to expand its application to remove other heavy metals and dyes.

The separation and upcycling of nickel from industrial wastewater is significant because it is harmful to the environment and human health. With the development of special engineering plastics industry, a substantial amount of polyimide (PI) scrap is generated. In this study, an amine and carboxyl functionalized PI (PI-AC) was prepared from waste-derived PI foam for the adsorption and separation of Ni(II). The adsorption performance of PI-AC can be modulated by adjusting the ratio of functional groups. PI-AC demonstrated rapid adsorption kinetics (<5 min) for Ni(II) and effectively adsorbed Ni(II) from real wastewater in column experiments. PI-AC shows a competitive dynamic adsorption capacity for Ni(II) (222.59 mg/g) as compared with most of the reported adsorbents. Furthermore, the successful removal of Ni from low-concentration simulated Ni-containing wastewater (7.18 mg/L) results in a residual Ni concentration (0.001 mg/L) that complies with the emission standard. The porous structure of the PI foam enables rapid adsorption of nickel and column adsorption was successfully achieved. The adsorption performance exhibited maintained stably even after five cycles, demonstrating excellent recoverability. The characterizations, comparison studies, and DFT calculations demonstrated that one nitrogen atom in the amine group and one oxygen atom in the carboxyl group act as a bidentate ligand to chelate with Ni(II). This study opens a new way for the treatment of wastewater using PI foam scrap, which coincides with the idea of “treating the waste with waste”.

Activated carbon (AC) derived from Phragmites Australis (PA) with phosphoric acid activation as a low-cost adsorbent is extensively used in water treatment. In this study, a novel manganese formate hydrate (MFH) in-situ modified activated carbon (AC-MFH) has been proposed and investigated. The physical and chemical characteristics of adsorbents were characterized by N 2 adsorption/desorption, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that AC-MFH had more microporous structures and surface oxygen-containing functional groups than AC. The Ni(II) adsorption behaviors of adsorbents were investigated by batch experiments, the results suggested that AC-MFH showed 20% higher Ni(II) adsorption capacity than that of AC and the associated adsorption isotherms and kinetics well fitted to the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model, respectively. The Ni(II) adsorption mechanisms of AC-MFH were investigated by FTIR and XPS analysis. These results indicated that the adsorption of Ni(II) mainly depended on the surface chemistry between the Ni(II) and surface oxygen-containing functional groups.
