Mild and Fast Construction of Ni-Based Electrodes for Industrial-Grade Water Splitting

Zikang Lu,Rikai Liang,Yuqi Shao,Weiju Hao

Achieving high−efficiency and stable hydrogen evolution from water splitting is a great challenge. Herein, a facilely prepared two−dimenssional self−supported catalytic electrode with excellent stability is constructed for large−scale hydrogen production from alkaline simulated seawater. The bifunctional catalytic electrode is prepared by a fast and mild one−step of sodium borohydride etching on a nickel foam (NF) substrate without adding other additives (NF@NiBx−3h). The overpotential of the hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) in alkaline−simulated seawater at 10 mA cm−2is 96 mV and 261 mV. At 200 mA cm−2, the NF@NiBx−3h electrode shows good stability over 7 days throughout the water splitting process due to the corrosion resistance of the NF substrate, and strong adhesion between the Ni−B active material and the substrate. This work demonstrates a novel strategy for fabricating catalytic electrodes with high−performance, low cost and excellent stability. Keywords:mild and fast construction;chemical etching;HER;OER;industrial−grade water splitting

A nickel-based dendritic electrode matrix with high surface efficiency mass transfer for highly efficient overall water splitting

Renjie Ji,Lixin Wang,Hongkun Wu,Fanbo Meng,Hui Jin,Dahao Han,Shijie Yang,Shian Zhao,Zhiyuan Chu,Yonghong Liu

Electrodes are key components in water splitting. Owing to their porous structures , commercial foam metal electrode matrices can provide numerous active sites. However, the complex and disordered surface structure impedes the release of the generated gas bubbles, and sluggish mass transfer usually becomes a bottleneck in the electrochemical reaction kinetics. For this purpose, this study proposes a pulse-jet electrodeposition method for the preparation of nickel-based dendritic electrode matrices (NDEM). This research shows that the electrode matrix prepared under the conditions of V = 26 V, PW = 10 μs, and PI = 35 μs has a unique surface structure, which can quickly release bubbles, effectively attract ions, and accelerate mass transfer on the electrode surface , resulting in excellent electrochemical performance . After loading the catalyst, the NDEM requires only 1.552 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . At an electrolysis voltage of 2.5 V, the hydrogen production was 45% higher than that of the NF electrode, and it had excellent stability. This study opens a new avenue for the design of highly efficient and low-cost electrodes for water splitting.

A novel nickel-based honeycomb electrode with microtapered holes and abundant multivacancies for highly efficient overall water splitting

Fan Zhang,Renjie Ji,Yonghong Liu,Yuan Pan,Baoping Cai,Zhijian Li,Zheng Liu,Shuaichen Lu,Yating Wang,Hui Jin,Chi Ma,Xinlei Wu

Hydrogen production is the key to the development and utilization of hydrogen energy. In this paper, we find a new phenomenon in which abundant and uniform bubbles evolve and quickly release during water splitting on the surface of a nickel-based honeycomb electrode with microtapered holes (NHEMH). Benefiting from the unique microtapered hole honeycomb structure, the solution circulation on the surface of NHEMH is accelerated, thus generating a dynamically stabilized reactive interface and improving the ionic/mass exchange. Meanwhile, the unique honeycomb skeleton has good hydrophilicity and aerophobic properties. Furthermore, NHEMH with a large surface area, rich multi-vacancies, and highly conductive nickel metal exhibits an outstanding electrocatalytic ability. P-doped NHEMH (PNHEMH) with the Ni 2 P/NiO heterointerface decorated by multivacancies, when used as an electrolyzer for overall water splitting, requires only 1.52 V to produce a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 , which is much better than the performance of benchmark Pt/C//IrO 2 electrodes.

Influence of Power Fluctuation on Ni-Based Electrode Degradation and Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Performance in Alkaline Water Splitting: Probing the Effect of Renewable Energy on Water Electrolysis

Congying Liu,Bing Lin,Hailong Zhang,Yingying Wang,Hangzhou Wang,Junlei Tang,Caineng Zou

HighlightsWhat are the main findings?Square-wave power has the greatest influence on Ni cathode HER compared to step- and triangle-power.Increasing the amplitude of square-wave power enhances coated cathode’s degradation. What is the implication of the main finding?Guidance for industrializing hydrogen production via renewable energy-coupled electrolytic water.Evaluation theory of cathode materials in electrolytic water.AbstractThe combination of water electrolysis and renewable energy to produce hydrogen is a promising way to solve the climate and energy crisis. However, the fluctuating characteristics of renewable energy not only present a significant challenge to the use of water electrolysis electrodes, but also limit the development of the hydrogen production industry. In this study, the effects of three different types of waveforms (square, step, and triangle, which were used to simulate the power input of renewable energy) on the electrochemical catalysis behavior of Ni plate cathodes for HER was investigated. During the test, the HER performance of the Ni cathode increased at first and then slightly decreased. The fluctuating power led to the degradation of the Ni cathode surface, which enhanced the catalysis effect by increasing the catalytic area and the active sites. However, prolonged operation under power fluctuations could have damaged the morphology of the electrode surface and the substances comprising this surface, potentially resulting in a decline in catalytic efficiency. In addition, the electrochemical catalysis behavior of the prepared FeNiMo-LDH@NiMo/SS cathode when subjected to square-wave potential with different fluctuation amplitudes was also extensively studied. A larger amplitude of fluctuating power led to a change in the overpotential and stability of the LDH electrode, which accelerated the degradation of the cathode. This research provides a technological basis for the coupling of water electrolysis and fluctuating renewable energy and thus offers assistance to the development of the “green hydrogen” industry.

3D-printed pyramid nickel-based electrode enabling directional bubble traffic and electrolyte flow for efficient hydrogen evolution

Zhaojing Han,Hao Zhao,Ci Peng,Chuanting Fan,Gang Wang,Jie Zhang,Zhiyong Tang

For efficient and stable large-scale water electrolysis, practical industrial electrodes should meet the following characteristics: high activity, structural stability , and fast bubble removal. Here we report a structured electrode (NiS–Co–NiP) prepared via 3D printing of nickel-based substrate and subsequent electrodeposition for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). With unique 3D nanosheets , the NiS–Co–NiP electrode exhibits large electrochemical surface area (ECSA), strong hydrophilicity, high mechanical strength and electrical conductivity , delivering outstanding HER activity. It requires low overpotentials of 134 mV and 169 mV to achieve the current densities of 100 mA cm −2 and 300 mA cm −2 , respectively. Moreover, rational design of the NiS–Co–NiP electrode in pyramidal geometry facilitates directional bubble transport and electrolyte flow, resulting in superior stability of 350 h at a current density of 150 mA cm −2 . This work demonstrates a new approach for manufacturing binder-free structured electrode of excellent HER performance at high current densities.

Monolithic nanoporous nickel fabricated via facile reduction for high-efficiency electrochemical water splitting

Yingshuang Guo,Zhihong Wang,Shuo Wang,Honglei Chen,Jin Kong,Xutong Liu,Qingxin Yang,Yong Zhang,Zhe Lü

Monolithic nanoporous metals are regarded as advanced functional materials for diverse applications. Herein, a facile approach was used to fabricate monolithic nanoporous Ni (MNPN) via direct reduction of NiO under a H 2 atmosphere. This method avoided complex preparation processes, and the only byproduct was water vapor , so the process is facile and environmentally friendly. When the optimized MNPN was used as a self-supporting electrode for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), it demonstrated outstanding HER performance with a low overpotential of 41.3 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH solution. Using MNPN and electro-oxidized derivatives (NiOOH/MNPN) as the cathode and anode , an alkaline electrolyzer reached a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at only 1.57 V and exhibited exceptional long-term durability for 200 h at 100 mA cm −2 , outperforming most reported electrolyzers assembled with Ni-based electrodes.

Trans-electrode pressure of gas-diffusion electrodes significantly influencing the electrochemical hydrogen peroxide production

Anlin Xu,Ziyan Yang,Zhiyi Zhou,Pu Yang,Yang Yu,Jiayang Liu,Yunhai Zhang

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) synthesis by electrochemical two-electron oxygen reduction has garnered increasing interest as a wide range of potential applications. Gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) can effectively promote the H 2 O 2 production efficiency by overcoming the oxygen mass transfer limitations but strongly influenced by the electrowetting process along the long-term operation. In this study, the effect of trans -electrode pressure (TEP) of GDE cathode on the electrowetting process was further elucidated. We controlled the TEP values of four types of GDEs: two Ni-based GDEs and two carbon cloth GDEs prepared by hot-pressing or brushing carbon black. SBA-15 was further used to regulate the microstructure of one Ni-based GDE. It was found that an optimal range of TEP occurred for all tested GDEs in terms of the max. concentration, the yield efficiency, the energy consumption, and the stability because TEP may change the triple-phase interface and influence the anti-electrowetting effect. The porosity of hot-pressed Ni GDE can maintain the TEP window and thus enhance the production of H 2 O 2 , likely via creating oxygen-containing functional groups and a bimodal pore structure on the electrode, revealed with several characterization techniques including SEM, CA, XPS , Raman spectra, CV and EIS . The porous Ni GDE presented an efficient and stable production of H 2 O 2 for 10 cycles: yielding H 2 O 2 at 4393.2–4602.2 mmol m −2 h −1 with current efficiencies of 94.2–98.7%. The best accumulated H 2 O 2 concentration can reach up to 3.58 ωt% H 2 O 2 at 10 h. The results provide an important reference for the industrial scaleup of electro-production of H 2 O 2 with GDEs.

Toward High CO Selectivity and Oxidation Resistance Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell with High-Entropy Alloy

Jun Tong,Na Ni,Baowen Zhou,Chongqing Yang,Kolan Madhav Reddy,Hengyong Tu,Yusi Liu,Zhe Tan,Longkai Xiang,Haozhen Li,Xing Zhou,Yunyi Zhang,Yixin Li,Hanchao Zhang,Lei Zhu,Zhen Huang

Ni-based cermet materials still persist as pronounced challenges for electrocatalysts in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs), due to their insufficient CO2 catalytic efficiency and inferior resistance to oxidation. In this paper, a (Fe,Co,Ni,Cu,Mo) quinary high-entropy alloy is explored as an alternative cathode material, offering enhanced performance in the co-electrolysis of H2O and CO2 for renewable syngas production. In comparison to traditional nickel-based cathodes, an assembled SOEC employing the as-designed quinary high-entropy alloy exhibits a remarkable increase in CO2 conversion capacity and significantly enhanced oxidation resistance. In addition, the electrolysis current density increases by 18%, and a stability test for more than 110 h reveals no degradation. Moreover, the stability can be maintained for up to 40 h even without any protective gas. Morphological and spectroscopic analyses, coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, elucidate that the high-entropy effect facilitates surface electron redistribution, which in turn contributes to the measurable activity by reducing the energy barrier of CO2 activation. Notably, the superior resistance to oxidation primarily originates from the in situ-formed spinel phase under oxidation conditions. This study demonstrates the satisfying performance of high-entropy alloys as cathode materials in SOEC, validating their high application potential in this field.

Template-assisted fabrication of Ni nanowire arrays for high efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Tao Zhang,Zhiyuan Ling

Architecture construction of electrode is one key factor for hydrogen generation from electrochemical water splitting. To enhance the efficiency of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at high current density , the architecture construction must be designed skillfully to prevent the surface blanketed by gas bubbles. In this work, we developed a three-level hierarchical surface with cluster-like nickel (Ni) nanowire array. The contact angle measurement indicates the surface having excellent hydrophilicity . The OER performance characterization reveals that after the surface is loaded with NiFe-based catalyst the Ni nanowire array electrode can deliver 500 mA cm −2 at an overpotential of 297 mV in 1 M KOH solution and can survive for over 24 h under 500 mA cm −2 operation. All the results demonstrate that the cluster-like nanowire array is beneficial for the spatial pathway separation for electrolyte supply and gas bubbles departure and the enhancement of OER efficiency.
