Synergistic solvent extraction of nickel by 2-hydroxy-5-nonylacetophenone oxime (Mextral 84H, denoted as HL) mixed with organic acids (denoted as HA) containing neodecanoic acid (Versatic 10) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (P204) diluted in aliphatics was comparatively studied. The synergistic effects on nickel with Mextral 84H/Versatic 10 and Mextral 84H/P204 systems were investigated by extraction pH isotherm and equimolar method. The nickel-organic extractants species structure and stoichiometry were determined by slope analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry and ultraviolet and visible (UV-Vis) spectrometry. The results showed that synergistic effects on nickel with a negligible shift of 0.06 pH units in the Mextral 84H/Versatic 10 system and a significant shift of 0.79 pH units in the Mextral 84H/P204 system were observed compared with single Mextral 84H system. Versatic 10 has little effect on the nickel extraction. The square-planar complex with a formation of Ni L 2 in the Mextral 84H/Versatic 10 system was proposed, the same as that in the single Mextral 84H system. P204 participates in the reaction between nickel and Mextral 84H, probably forming an octahedral complex with a formation of Ni ( H 2 A 2 L 2 ) . The synergistic effect could result from this formation of more stable and hydrophobic nickel adducts, which promote the distribution ratio of nickel.

A large amount of nickel discharge from Ni-plating wastewater, inevitably causes serious water pollution and resources waste issue, which has attracted extensive attentions worldwide. Solvent extraction is one of the most effective methods for the removal and recovery of nickel from Ni-plating wastewater. However, conventional extraction with acidic extractants brought secondary pollutant (acid wastewater). To eliminate the initial and secondary pollution caused by Ni-plating wastewater treatment , an acid-free and alkali-free extraction process for nickel by using a cleaner extractant–PEPD was proposed. The effects of Cl − concentration, PEPD concentration, equilibrium pH, O/A ratio and reaction time on the nickel extraction efficiency were evaluated employing single variable method. The results demonstrated that PEPD showed a high extraction capacity (single-stage extraction: 94%) and selectivity ( β Ni/Ca : 284, β Ni/Mg : 306) to nickel at room temperature. The extraction mechanism was further studied by means of FT-IR, UV-VIS, NMR and ESI-MS spectra and the structure of coordinated complex between Ni and PEPD was determined to be NiCl 4 (PEPD) 2 . Remarkably, PEPD exhibited a good stability after going through five extraction and stripping cycles. In conclusion, using PEPD to substitute the conventional acidic extractants is of great potential application value due to the merits of pollution reducing and utilization effectiveness improvement of resources.

The efficient recovery of nickel from chloride systems has long presented a challenge in the field. While solvent extraction is a viable approach, conventional extractants have been associated with drawbacks such as a high requirement for chloride ions and substantial consumption of acids and alkalis. In response to these challenges, this investigation developed and synthesized a novel thiazole-based extractant, N, N-Bis(4-thiazolylmethyl)octylamine (NNBT), tailored for the selective extraction of nickel from chloride systems. Findings from the study indicate that the nitrogen atom situated on the benzylamine framework within NNBT can interact synergistically with the chelating thiazole ring, facilitating effective nickel extraction and notably reducing the need for chloride ions. Furthermore, the extractant can be regenerated using deionized water , thereby obviating the necessity for additional consumption of acids and alkalis. Following the validation of NNBT as an environmentally sustainable and efficient nickel extractant within the chloride ion system, it was successfully employed to selectively and effectively extract nickel from the nickel-aluminum slag of spent HDP catalyst. The extracted nickel and aluminum were subsequently processed into electroplated nickel chloride and polyaluminum chloride, respectively, meeting the national standards of China. These outcomes underscore the eco-friendliness and promise of NNBT for nickel extraction from chloride systems.

The escalating demand for cobalt in modern industry necessitates the recycling or extraction of this resource for sustainable development. Despite the abundance of lignin in nature, its utilization remains low, highlighting the need to enhance its value-added potential. This study focuses on the synthesis of quaternary ammonium lignin (QAL) and 2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) as ionic liquid (QP–IL) compounds for the extraction of metal ions. A comparison of the extraction behavior of Co(II) and Ni(II) from chloride solution between QP–IL and P507 revealed varying extraction ratios under different conditions, with QP–IL demonstrating a higher cobalt extractability than P507. Furthermore, under identical conditions, QP–IL exhibited superior Co/Ni separation performance (βCo/Ni) compared to P507. Ultimately, QP–IL proved to be more effective than P507 in separating cobalt from mixed solutions.

A new compound, α-aminophosphonate derivative containing pyridine ring (PPDE), was designed and synthesized as an extractant for the separation of nickel from metal impurities. Over 94.5% of Ni (II) extraction from sulfuric acid solution was achieved by using PPDE with an equilibrium pH of 4.02. Meanwhile, high separation coefficients of 23.8 for Ni to Co, 84.9 for Ni to Mn, 254.1 for Ni to Ca and 696.7 for Ni to Mg, respectively, were obtained. It was noted that PPDE exhibited an excellent regenerability, and the extraction of Ni with the recycled organic phase ranged from 92.5% to 93.9% during six circulations. The extracted nickel complex was determined as [Ni (PPDE) 2 (DNNSA − ) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ], which was supported by the data obtained from Fourier transform-infrared, UV–Vis and electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry spectra.

Base metal hydrometallurgy in a chloride medium has considerable advantages, as metals can be recovered by solvent extraction through a neutral complex mechanism without extra reagent addition , leading to ready lixiviant recycling and significantly reduced wastewater discharge. However, the recovery of Ni(II) using this hydrometallurgical method is challenging because of the unavailability of appropriate extraction reagents. In this study, a new reagent, N-2-ethylhexylpyridine-3-formamide (MEH3), was used to efficiently extract Ni(II) from weakly acidic (pH > 2.5) or neutral chloride solutions in the form of neutral complexes without pH adjustment. Some other metal ions can also be extracted; the selectivity of the reagent for each metal decreased in the following order: Cu(II) > Zn(II) > Ni(II) > Fe(III) > Co(II) > Mn(II). The reagent had weak ability to extract other metal ions such as Ca, Al, Cr(III), Mg, and Li. The extraction of Ni(II) was positively correlated with the Cl − concentration in the aqueous solution, indicating that Cl − is a driving force for Ni(II) extraction. The Ni(II) loaded organic phase was stripped with water, and approximately 50 g/L of Ni(II) in the loaded strip liquor was obtained at an O/A ratio of 15:1. The Ni(II) extraction mechanism was further studied using crystal structure analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, and the maximum loading capacity. The results showed that a Ni(MEH3) 2 Cl 2 complex was formed via Ni(II) extraction. In conclusion, the MEH3 system can selectively extract Ni(II) from a chloride solution without consuming alkaline reagents, and no new substances are produced, which is beneficial for the realization of mother liquor recycling and has a positive impact on clean hydrometallurgy .
