The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the efficiency limiting half-reaction in water electrolysis for hydrogen production, which necessitates the use of an efficient and cost-effective catalyst. Nonmetal and metal element codoping is an effective way to profoundly modulate the electronic structure of transition metal oxide catalysts and the interaction with oxygen (O) adsorbates, which are crucial forOER efficiency. Herein, a sulfur (S), phosphorus (P) and iron (Fe) element codoped nickel oxide (NiO), denoted as S,P-NiO(Fe), was prepared as an OER catalyst, wherein the incorporation of P and Fe played significant roles in regulating the electronic structure of the NiO motif and reducing the activation barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) during the OER process, thus substantially enhancing the catalytic capability. Concretely, the S,P-NiO(Fe) electrode displayed an overpotential of 230 mV at an OER response of 50 mA cm−2, a low Tafel slope of 64 mV dec−1 and robust catalytic stability. Theoretical calculations showed that the incorporation of P and Fe downshifted the d-band center position, which mediated the adsorptive interaction strengths of O-intermediates and reduced the activation barrier of the RDS (from *O to *OOH), whereupon the low energy pathway led to rapid OER kinetics. This work offers a viable tactic to improve the OER catalytic capability of metal oxides through metal and nonmetal element codoping.

Graphical A novel interlaced mesoporous NiO NSs@CF electrochemical catalyst was prepared using a direct in situ vertical growth method, in which NiO formed mesoporous nanosheets with a pore size of 15 nm and a thickness of ∼30 nm. This binder-free electrode exhibited a superior NH 3 yield of 71.3 μg h −1 mg −1 cat. and a FE of 17.9 % at −0.5 V vs. RHE. Metal oxide nanomaterials directly grown on conductive substrates are optimal electrode materials because their structures allow for rapid ion and electron transport and thereby reduce internal resistance in the electrode. The development of such binder-free, self-supporting electrodes is of great significance for applications in electrocatalysis. In this work, a simple hydrothermal in situ self-assembly reaction and annealing process was developed to prepare three kinds of nickel oxide @ carbon felt (NiO@CF) nanocomposites with different morphologies. The influence of different precipitators (strong or weak bases) on the morphology of the resulting nano-sized nickel oxide nanocomposites was investigated. The microstructures of the NiO@CF samples were characterized with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). When ammonia was used as the precipitator, NiO grew vertically on the surface of the carbon felt and formed a mesoporous nanosheet-like structure (NiO NSs@CF). As an electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction ( e -NRR) electrode, the NiO NSs@CF sample showed an excellent NH 3 yield (71.3 μg h −1 mg −1 cat. ) and Faradaic efficiency (17.9 % at −0.5 V vs. RHE) in 0.1 M Na 2 SO 4 . The good performance was attributed to the vertical interleaved mesoporous sheet-like structure (with the pore size of 15 nm and the thickness of ∼30 nm) and the relatively high concentration of oxygen vacancies. First-principles calculations with strong on-site Coulomb interactions demonstrated that the presence of oxygen vacancy on NiO sample leads to a significantly stronger N binding over the surface, benefiting for the nitrogen gas adsorption and reduction. The e -NRR performance of this binder-free, flexible electrode material is superior to that of other reported nickel-based nanomaterials. This study highlights the potential of such binder-free carbon felt electrodes for use in e -NRR that could meet the needs of industrial production.

The NiO doped LiFePO 4 /C composite was synthesized by a simple solid state method. The structure and morphology of synthesized particles were characterized by XRD, Raman spectrum , SEM, TEM and EDS. Electrochemical performance of the pristine and nickel oxide modified samples was evaluated by galvanostatic charge-discharge test, CV , and EIS . The results indicate that NiO doped LiFePO 4 /Li type coin cell exhibits improved specific capacity and cycle stability, especially at high rates. Among all the modified samples, the 5.0%wt NiO doped sample shows the best electrochemical performance, which achieves a specific capacity of 129 mA h g −1 at 1 C current rate due to the modest graphitization of carbon layer on the surface of LiFePO 4 particles. The results indicate that nickel oxide modification is an effective way to improve the electrochemical performance of LiFePO 4 /C cathode materials for lithium ion batteries .

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas with a high global warming potential. The N2O direct decomposition (deN2O) is currently the most widely used technique due to its operational simplicity and lack of secondary pollution. The presence of impurity gases in industrial exhaust increases the challenge of eliminating N2O, urging the development of highly active and stable catalysts for its degradation. In this study, a series of praseodymium (Pr)-doped nickel oxide (NiO) catalysts were synthesized for N2O degradation. These catalysts showed higher N2O decomposition activity (T100 = 400–440 °C) than pure NiO (T100 = 480 °C) and also demonstrated high resistance to impurity gases in simulated industrial nitric acid tail gas. In the catalyst with a Pr to Ni ratio of 0.002, the highly dispersed Pr on the NiO surface regulated its particle size and increased specific surface area and pore volume. DFT calculations revealed that Pr significantly enhanced the electron-donating ability of Ni2+, facilitating the dissociative adsorption of N2O on the catalyst surface, where O existed in the form of Ni3+-O*. Additionally, Pr reduced the desorption energy of O2, the rate-determining step. During the reaction, Pr3+ transferred electrons to Ni3+ via f-d electron hopping, stabilizing the active Ni2+ sites and enabling an efficient catalytic reaction. These findings demonstrate the practical potential of this catalyst and provide new insights into the degradation of N2O in industrial exhaust gases, offering a promising avenue for application.

ABSTRACT Owing to its cost-effectiveness and adjustable eight-electron distribution in the 3 d orbital, nickel oxide (NiO) is considered an effective electrocatalyst for an ambient electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). However, because of the low conductivity of the transition metal oxide electrocatalyst, its application in this field is limited. In this study, we found that the doping of NiO nanosheets with a small amount (3–10 nm) of Pt nanoparticles (Pt/NiO-NSs) leads to considerable improvements in the Faradaic efficiency (FE) and NH 3 yield compared with those obtained using pure NiO, breaking the common perception that commercial Pt-based electrocatalysts demonstrate little potential for NRR due to their high hydrogen evolution tendency. In a 0.1 mol/L Na 2 SO 4 solution at −0.2 V vs. RHE, a typical Pt/NiO-2 sample exhibits an optimum electrochemical NH 3 yield of 20.59 μg h –1 mg –1 cat. and an FE of 15.56%, which are approximately 5 and 3 times greater, respectively, than those of pure NiO nanosheets at the same applied potential. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that Pt in Pt/NiO-NSs exist as Pt 0 , Pt 2+ , and Pt 4+ and that high-valence Pt ions are more electropositive, thereby favoring chemisorption and the activation of N 2 molecules. Density function theory calculations showed that the d -band of Pt nanoparticles supported on NiO is significantly tuned compared to that of pure Pt, affording a more favorable electronic structure for NRR. The results of this study show that Pt can be an effective NRR electrochemical catalyst when loaded on an appropriate substrate. Most importantly, it provides a new synthetic avenue for the fabrication of highly active Pt-based NRR electrocatalysts.

As a part of the fundamental study related to the reduction smelting of spent lithium-ion batteries and ocean polymetallic nodules based on MnO-SiO 2 slags, this work investigated the activity coefficient of NiO in SiO 2 -saturated MnO-SiO 2 slag and Al 2 O 3 -saturated MnO-SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 slag at 1623 K with controlled oxygen partial pressure levels of 10 −7 , 10 −6 , and 10 −5 Pa. Results showed that the solubility of nickel oxide in the slags increased with increasing oxygen partial pressure. The nickel in the MnO-SiO 2 slag and MnO-SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 slag existed as NiO under experimental conditions. The addition of Al 2 O 3 in the MnO-SiO 2 slag decreased the dissolution of nickel in the slag and increased the activity coefficient of NiO. Furthermore, the activity coefficient of NiO ( γ NiO ), which is solid NiO, in the SiO 2 saturated MnO-SiO 2 slag and Al 2 O 3 saturated MnO-SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 slag at 1623 K can be respectively calculated as γ NiO = 8.58 w (NiO) + 3.18 and γ NiO = 11.06 w (NiO) + 4.07, respectively, where w (NiO) is the NiO mass fraction in the slag.

The higher energy density and lesser toxicity of ethanol compared to methanol make it an ideal combustible renewable energy source in fuel cells. Finding suitable cost-effective electrocatalysts that can oxidize ethanol in ethanol-based fuel cells is a major challenge. With their high catalytic activity and stability in alkaline media, transition metal-based catalysts are ideal candidates for alkaline direct ethanol fuel cells. Nickel-based nanomaterials and composites exhibit high electrocatalytic activity, which makes them predominant candidates for the electrochemical oxidation of ethanol. In this study, the electrocatalytic activity of a nickel oxide flower-like structure was explored. Forming a nanocomposite of NiO in combination with carbon nanotubes (CNTs), NiO/CNTs, as a substrate led to an increase in the stability of the electrocatalyst in alkaline media. Furthermore, the electrocatalytic activity of the NiO/CNT nanocomposite was greatly enhanced by decorating the surface with different ratios of silver (Ag). Ag/NiO/CNT composites with different Ag ratios, namely, 25% and 50% by weight, were studied. The Ag 25%/NiO/CNT weight ratio showed a maximum ethanol conversion. At an ethanol concentration of 300 mM, the electrochemical oxidation current density was found to be 57.1 ± 0.2 mA cm−2 for the 25% by weight Ag ratio, with a five-fold increase in the current density (compared to NiO/CNTs (10 ± 0.34 mA cm−2)). Furthermore, the nanocomposite synthesized here (Ag 25%/NiO/CNTs) showed a significantly higher energy conversion (current per ethanol concentration) rate compared to other reported NiO-based catalysts. These results open real opportunities for designing high efficiency ethanol fuel cell catalysts.

Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) is a potent greenhouse gas with high global warming potential. It is urgent to develop active and stabile catalysts for N 2 O direct catalytic decomposition (deN 2 O) in industrial exhaust gas. In this study, a series of Eu-doped NiO catalysts were synthesized by co-precipitation method. The catalyst with an Eu to Ni molar ratio of 0.04 showed the highest deN 2 O ability, reaching 100 % conversion at 400 °C without generating NO x by-products. The catalyst also displayed resilience against O 2 and NO impurity gases, maintaining structural stability and achieving complete transformation of N 2 O at 440 °C. Eu was uniformly dispersed in NiO in the form of Eu 2 O 3 , which not only regulated the particle size and specific surface area of NiO, but also changed the surface chemistry of NiO by inducing more Ni 2+ active sites and more mobile O β species. Eu-doping altered the decomposition mechanism of N 2 O from L-H to E-R mechanism, reducing the energy barrier of O 2 desorption, which was the rate-determining step. During the reaction, Eu 0.04 Ni showed an activation behavior after cyclic use and long-term reaction and reduced T 100 to 320 °C after 14-hr experiment. These findings demonstrate the potential of the catalyst for practical application and provide new routes for the direct decomposition of N 2 O in industrial exhaust gas.

Research on environmentally friendly energy storage devices is an important strategy to solve the energy crisis and environmental pollution. Herein, a novel self-supporting electrode based on multi-dimensional Co 3 O 4 /NiCo 2 O 4 hierarchical flakes coating on graphene/carbon sphere (rGO/CS) conductive substrate is reasonably designed. Firstly, a simple hydrothermal method is used to synthesize NiCo 2 O 4 with both flake and nanoneedle morphology on the rGO/CS substrate. Subsequently, Co 3 O 4 /NiCo 2 O 4 @rGO/CS is obtained by in-situ growth of metal organic frameworks polyhedrons on the surface of NiCo 2 O 4 flakes followed by calcination. In the unique structure, benefitting from the synergy between the substrate and multi-element transition metal oxides, the integrated film shows good conductivity, high specific surface area and abundant active sites. Thus, the binder-free electrode exhibits an ultra-high specific capacitance of 3876.6 F g −1 (538.4 mA h g −1 ) at 1 A g −1 . A hybrid supercapacitor is assembled with activated carbon as the negative electrode and Co 3 O 4 /NiCo 2 O 4 @rGO/CS as the positive electrode, the device shows a highest energy density of 56.5 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 800 W kg −1 . After 6000 charge–discharge cycles, 92.5% of the initial capacitance can be still maintained, indicating its good application prospects in energy storage materials.

Cubic perovskite-type and octahedral pyrochlore-type powders of potassium tantalate (KTaO 3 ) were selectively synthesized by a single-step hydrothermal method under different concentrations of potassium hydroxide (KOH). The obtained photocatalysts were characterized by X–ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectra (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high–resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and UV–vis absorption spectra (UV–vis). The photocatalytic activities of the KTaO 3 samples for reduction of carbon dioxide to methanol under UV light irradiation were investigated. The results showed that the KOH concentration played a significant role in determining the phases of the resultant products. Compared with the cubic crystalline structure, the octahedral crystalline structure exhibited the higher photocatalytic activity. In addition, the photocatalytic activities of KTaO 3 were obviously increased when a small amount of nickel oxide (NiO) was loaded as a co-catalyst. The highest rate of methanol formation was 1815 μmol/g/h when 2 wt% of NiO was loaded.

Rational design of low-cost and high-efficiency electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for scalable and sustainable hydrogen production from economical water-alkali splitting. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that coupling NiO x and CoP could effectively boost overall HER kinetics through lowing the H 2 O dissociation barrier, accelerating the OH* transfer process, and providing the rapid H* migration kinetics as well as the appropriate H* energetics. Based on these findings, we successfully prepared a three-dimensional (3D) self-supported electrode of ultrathin CoP nanosheets directly grown on the surface-oxidized Ni nanotube arrays via a simple and scalable electrochemical synthesis method. As expected, such a heterostructure electrode exhibits superior alkaline HER performance with low overpotentials of 51 and 164 mV to drive the current densities of 10 and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively, outperforming most of the efficient alkaline HER electrocatalysts.

The Nickel oxide (NiO) exhibited good catalytic performance for the thermal decomposition of AP but has limited catalytic activity for RDX and HMX. By adjusting the amorphous state, the number of active sites on the surface of NiO can be increased, thereby enhancing its catalytic activity. In this study, the amorphous NiO (Ra-NiO) with high specific surface area was successfully synthesized and characterized systemically. The Ra-NiO exhibited superior catalytic properties for the thermal decomposition of AP, HMX and RDX. Compared with the commercial γ-NiO, the Ra-NiO decreased the peak decomposition temperature of the HMX by 14.6 °C as well as the activation energy by 213.5 kJ·mol -1 . Furthermore, the initial decomposition temperature is decreased by 68.8°C and the heat release is increased by 34.5 % (752.4 J·g -1 ). These results underscore the substantial advantages of amorphous modulation in enhancing the catalytic activity of catalysts.
