The rational design of efficient, cost-effective, and durable electrocatalysts is crucial for the realization of hydrogen production through water splitting. The present study describes the synthesis of a novel three-dimensional (3D) volcano-like Fe 3 S 4 /Ni 3 S 2 /WO 3 /NiFe LDH/NF (Layered Double Hydroxides/Nickel Foam) electrocatalyst with a highly wrinkled structure through a two-step hydrothermal method. The as-synthesized electrocatalyst exhibits an exceptionally low overpotential of 77 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 131 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , owing to the unique morphology and strong electronic interactions between Fe 3 S 4 , Ni 3 S 2 and WO 3 heterostructures. The Fe 3 S 4 /Ni 3 S 2 /WO 3 /NiFe LDH/NF electrocatalyst demonstrates exceptional performance in overall water splitting when employed as both anode and cathode, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at an impressively low cell voltage of 1.5 V as well as exhibiting remarkable durability with little degradation over a period of 12 hours. This study presents a straightforward approach for the synthesis of highly efficient and durable non-noble metal catalysts for overall water splitting under hydrothermal conditions.

Developing cost-effectiveness and superior electrocatalysts is crucial to improve the efficiency of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting system. Hence, flower-like phosphorus doped Ni 3 S 2 /CoFe 2 O 4 arrays (P-Ni 3 S 2 /CoFe 2 O 4 /NF) were generated on three-dimensional (3D) nickel foam (NF) via the two-step hydrothermal treatment and subsequent phosphorization. Additionally, a series of control experiments were conducted to investigate the formation mechanism. By virtue of the unique 3D configurations and multi-compositions, the as-prepared catalyst exhibited greatly improved OER performance in 1.0 M KOH solution, with the overpotential of only 254 mV at 50 mA cm −2 and low Tafel slope of 54.43 mV dec −1 . This study provides a feasible approach for preparing advanced electrocatalyst in energy conversion and storage devices.

The mechanism of Li–O2 batteries is based on the reactions of lithium ions and oxygen, which hold a theoretical higher energy density of approximately 3500 W h kg−1. In order to improve the practical specific capacity and cycling performance of Li–O2 batteries, a catalytically active mechanically robust air cathode is required. In this work, we synthesized a freestanding catalytic cathode with RuO2 decorated 3D web Co3O4 nanowires on nickel foam. When the specific capacity was limited at 500 mA h g−1, the RuO2–Co3O4/NiF had a stable cycling life of up to 122 times. The outstanding performance can be primarily attributed to the robust freestanding Co3O4 nanowires with RuO2 loading. The unique 3D web nanowire structure provides a large surface for Li2O2 growth and RuO2 nanoparticle loading, and the RuO2 nanoparticles help to promote the round trip deposition and decomposition of Li2O2, therefore enhancing the cycling behavior. This result indicates the superiority of RuO2–Co3O4/NiF as a freestanding highly efficient catalytic cathode for Li–O2 batteries.

Low-cost and high-efficiency electrocatalysts produced by constructing the interfacial heterostructure have attracted more attention in oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we synthesize a three-dimensional (3D) heterogeneous structure of Ni x Co y Se 2 nanospheres loaded onto NiFe hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheets via bare nickel foam (NF) two-step electrodeposition. The optimal NiFe-LDH@Ni x Co y Se 2 /NF nanosheets heterojunction electrocatalyst is verified with an excellent OER performance in 1.0 M KOH solution, which only requires a low overpotential of 265.5 mV and 297.8 mV to drive high current density of 100 mA cm −2 and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively, long-term durability of more than 60 h at 100 mA cm −2 , and an extremely low Tafel slope of 57.5 mV dec −1 . Meanwhile, due to the dramatic improvement in OER performance, there is an enhancement in the overall water-splitting activity of the NiFe-LDH@Ni x Co y Se 2 /NF nanosheets heterojunction, attaining a current density of 20 mA cm −2 at the low cell voltage of 1.65 V. As a result, it shows the importance of constructing highly efficient OER catalyst with the rational design of heterostructures. The enhanced catalytic performance can be attributed to the large exposed electrocatalytic active sites accessible and constructed an efficient electronic transmission channel by eliminating contact resistance.

Porous carbons (PCs), widely deployed sorbents in diverse areas, are usually synthesized by thermochemically carbonizing carbonaceous precursors and thermally regenerated at great energy-cost. To seek alternative solutions to such energy penalty and based on the exceptional localized Eddy current heating (LECH) capacity of metal objects upon their exposure to an alternating magnetic field , LECH-driven synthesis of PCs is explored and exemplified by using nickel foam (NF)-delivered LECH to drive carbonization of phenolic resin (PR) infilled within the voids of NF, producing varied PC-incorporated NFs (NF@PCs). Compared with the PCs prepared by using conventional tubular furnace heating, LECH-driven carbonization of PR is able to produce PCs at lower temperature and with greatly enhanced porosity, surface area and graphitization degree, which are mainly resulting from the localized heating nature of LECH. Driven by the same NF-delivered LECH, the moisture adsorbed in the LiCl-loaded NF@PC can be rapidly and completely released at moderate temperature, demonstrating the highly efficient LECH-driven regeneration of PCs. Given that the LECH is delivered by cost-effective and widely available NFs, occurs within the matrix of PR and PC bulk solid, and remotely triggered by an external magnetic field with greatly mitigated energy loss , LECH-driven carbonization of PR and water desorption from PCs thus demonstrated a new, energy-efficient and low-cost strategy to effectively synthesize and regenerate PCs.

Water oxidation plays a pivotal role in energy conversion and storage such as in water splitting and metal-air batteries. The development of a highly active and stable electrode for water oxidation at a low price is greatly challenging. Here, we report a self-supported oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrode with a 3D porous Ni foam (NF) as a core and a dense layer of amorphous phosphorus-doped Ni hydroxide (Ni–OH/P) film as a shell. This facilely fabricated 3D core–shell structured electrode with directly grown active materials offered improved activity and prolonged stability for OER. It required an overpotential of 490 mV to deliver a current density of 100 mA cm−2; it showed a small Tafel slope at 87 mV dec−1 and sustained elongated electrolysis at 100 mA cm−2 for 100 h. The NiOOH shell was in situ formed on the surface of the Ni–OH/P film. Then, a new core–shell structured film was constructed. The synergetic effects of the newly formed crystalline NiOOH shell and amorphous Ni–OH/P core contributed to high stability under harsh conditions. This work presents a facile and easy scale-up path to develop self-supported hybrid electrodes for efficient and stable energy conversion and storage.

The fabrication of low-cost and high-performance electrocatalysts is essential for water splitting to achieve a sustainable oxygen evolution reaction. In this work, spinel oxides (CuCo2O4 and Co3O4) are mounted on nickel foam (NF) to form chrysanthemum-like hybrid crystal structures assembled from nanowires. The as-synthesized CuCo2O4–Co3O4/NF shows a high surface area, a large number of mesoporous structures and excellent charge transfer channels, which is conducive to the generation and overflow of O2. And the synergistic effect, as well as the transfer of electron density between CuCo2O4 and Co3O4, contributes to the enhancement of OER activity. As a result, CuCo2O4–Co3O4/NF exhibits excellent OER performance with an overpotential of only 267 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a low Tafel slope (114.6 mV dec−1) and excellent stability with a scarce loss of the initial catalyst activity over 24 h under alkaline conditions. This work provides an effective method to show higher catalytic activity by combining two spinel oxides.

Design and synthesis of a highly efficient OER catalyst is the key to improve the efficiency of hydroelectrolysis for hydrogen production. In this paper, a rational approach to improve the catalytic performance of CoMoO4 nanomaterial was reported. A nanoflower structured CoMoO4 precursor was synthesized on nickel foam using a typical hydrothermal method. Then, CoMoO4/NF was etched through brief immersion in iron nitrate solution at room temperature to produce FeOOH–CoMoO4/NF. The unique 3D structure of FeOOH–CoMoO4/NF could availably promote interfacial electron transfer as well as effectively provide abundant active sites, and it exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity. FeOOH–CoMoO4/NF requires an overpotential of 209 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Meanwhile, the material FeOOH–CoMoO4/NF exhibits excellent catalytic durability of up to 24 h, which is promising for practical applications in energy conversion. Thus, this work may offer a viable strategy to assemble remarkable OER electrocatalysts.

To address the growing demand for efficient and stable energy storage in the context of green energy, in this study, an acid etching method was employed to in-situ grow Ni(OH) 2 nanosheet arrays on a nickel foam (NF) substrate. Subsequently, negatively charged Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets were electrophoretically deposited onto the Ni(OH) 2 /NF surface to result in a MXene/Ni(OH) 2 /NF composite electrode material. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations revealed the homogeneous dispersion distribution of nanosheets on the material surface. The composite material exhibited high electrical conductivity and good hydrophilicity by rapid water infiltration within 150 ms. Furthermore, the Motte-Schottky effect establishes a distinctive pathway for electron transfer , which leads to the creation of electron vacancies or ‘holes’ on the MXene surface. This phenomenon significantly boosts MXene's electrochemical activity and enhances its affinity for OH − ions in the electrolyte, which consequently improves the performance of electrochemical capacitors . Electrochemical tests verified that the prepared MXene/Ni(OH) 2 /NF electrode displayed an areal specific capacitance of 0.223 mAh cm −2 at a current density of 1 mA cm −2 . The electrode displayed excellent rate performance with a capacity retention rate of 71 % when the current density was increased by five times. In addition, the assembled asymmetric capacitor with MXene/Ni(OH) 2 /NF electrode demonstrated an excellent cycling stability with only a 16.38 % capacity loss after 5000 cycles. It also exhibited the remarkable specific capacitance and long-term stability by achieving a high energy density of 43.68 Wh kg −1 and a power density of 424.96 W kg −1 . These results highlight the electrode's exceptional performance in terms of energy storage and power delivery.

The metallic lithium (Li) is considered as the most promising anode material for high-energy batteries. Nevertheless, the uncontrollable growth of Li dendrite and unstable electrolyte/electrode interface still hinder the development of Li-based battery. In this work, a novel strategy has been proposed to stabilize Li anode by in-situ polymerizing polypyrrole (PPy) layer on Ni foam (PPy@Ni foam) as an artificial protective layer. The PPy protective layer can effectively decrease the contact between Li metal and electrolyte during cycling. In addition, the morphology characterization shows that the PPy layer can help the even Li deposition underneath the layer, leading to a dendrite-free Li anode. As a result, when deposited 2 mAh•cm −2 Li metal, the PPy@Ni foam can keep stable Coulombic efficiency (99%) during nearly 250 cycles, much better than the pure Ni foam (100 cycles). Even in the case of the Li capacity of 10 mAh•cm −2 , the stable cycling performance for 60 cycles can still be achieved. Furthermore, when assembled with LiFePO 4 material as the cathode for a full cell, the PPy@Ni foam can keep high capacity retention of 85.5% at 500 cycles. In our work, we provide a simple and effective method to enhance the electrochemical performances of Li metal-based batteries, and reveal a new avenue to design three-dimensional (3D) metallic current collector for protecting the Li metal anode.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water electrolysis. This study synthesizes a nickel-based MOF on a nickel foam substrate (NiMOF/NF) via a solvothermal method and fabricates NiMOF-FeOOH/NF composites through Fe electrodeposition. The NiMOF-FeOOH 600 /NF composite, prepared with a 600 s electrodeposition time, exhibits an overpotential of 320 mV at 20 mA·cm -2 and a Tafel slope of 126 mV·dec -1 . Compared to unmodified NiMOF/NF, the overpotential was reduced by 320 mV and the Tafel slope by 146 mV dec -1 . In addition, no significant performance degradation was observed during the 40 h stability test. Further results demonstrated that deposition of Fe ions significantly improved the intrinsic conductivity of NiMOF/NF, enabling more efficient charge transfer during the OER process. Additionally, the modified FeOOH surface morphology increased the number of accessible active sites and enhanced the exposure of catalytic centers. In summary, these structural and electronic modifications synergistically improve the overall catalytic performance and have guiding significance for the application of MOF to OER.

Nickel-based transition metal electrocatalysts for water electrolysis are promising alternatives to precious metal based electrocatalysts, due to their high activity, low cost, and relatively high stability, offering broad prospects for application in hydrogen production via water electrolysis. Modifying nickel-based transition metal electrocatalysts with phosphorus elements and Schottky heterojunction interfaces can influence the electronic state of the metal, thus enhance the electrocatalytic performance of the catalyst. In this study, a phosphor modified nickel-based electrocatalyst, i.e. MXene/Ni 2 P/NF electrode material was obtained by assembling Ni 2 P nanosheets on a nickel foam (NF) substrate and then depositing MXene nanosheets onto the surface of Ni 2 P/NF via electrophoretic deposition. Water droplets can wet the interior of the electrode material within 150 ms (below the detection limit), demonstrating excellent hydrophilicity, which facilitates the wettability of the electrolyte and the adsorption/desorption of reaction intermediates. Electrochemical tests revealed that the MXene/Ni 2 P/NF electrode exhibits an overpotential of only 94 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , with a Tafel slope of 83.7 mV dec −1 , in the hydrogen evolution reaction. The overpotential remains virtually unchanged after a 24-h stability test.
