Cracking reactions play essential roles in pore development of activated carbon (AC) during activation of a biomass feedstock with K 2 C 2 O 4 . Strengthening activity of activating agents for cracking might increase capability for creating pores. This was verified herein by conducting activation of poplar wood and its derived biochar by K 2 C 2 O 4 with Ni presence for enhancing activity for cracking. The results indicated that nickel species promoted cracking, decreasing substantially yield of AC by 41.4 % and abundance of organics in resulting bio-oils. Nonetheless, nickel presence remarkably enlarged pore volume (1.0 versus 0.7 cm 3 /g in control experiment without Ni) and average pore diameter (1.7 versus 1.0 nm), creating more mesopores (84.7 % versus 96.8 %) and macropores. Activation of poplar-derived biochar enhanced specific surface area (1167.4 versus 1033.4 m 2 /g) and also formation of mesopores (81.0 % versus 98.1 %) with nickel presence. Additionally, nickel also promoted dehydrogenation and deoxygenation, rendering AC of higher aromatic degree. However, some nickel species inserting skeleton of AC were difficult to be removed via acid washing, which blocked some pores. Nickel presence also led to more fragmented structure of AC in either activation of PW or the biochar, generating more larger pores with minimized steric hindrance for adsorption of large molecules like tetracycline.

Developing an efficient and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts with superior activity for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is highly required but still challenging. Herein, highly dispersed Ni species containing both Ni nanoparticles (NPs) and atomically dispersed Ni-N X on mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbon (Ni-N-C) were prepared by a facile one-pot pyrolysis strategy using dicyandiamide, citric acid and nickel acetylacetonate as raw materials. The confinement agent citric acid is quite requisite for dispersing Ni NPs and forming mesoporous graphene-like carbon substrate. Due to the uniform size of Ni NPs (3 nm) and the synergistic effect between Ni NPs and Ni-N X , and the unique mesoporous carbon structure, such Ni-N-C catalyst exhibits favorable activities for both HER and OER. The overpotentials for HER and OER are only 218 and 330 mV vs. RHE on glassy carbon to deliver a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 , respectively. Moreover, this catalyst also showed good operation durability with no obvious deactivation after long-term (18 h) potentiostatic electrolysis or continuous CV tests. This work could offer a new avenue for the design of bifunctional electrocatalysts in efficient water splitting.

The presence of abundant hydroxyl groups on the surface of Al2O3 can promote the dispersion of Ni species but produce an inactive NiAl2O4 phase at high temperatures. Moreover, the catalysts prepared by the conventional incipient wetness impregnation method lack the sites for the activation of CO2, which leads to coke deposition and thus affects the catalyst activity. The above restricts the utilization of Ni in conventional Ni/Al2O3 catalysts. In this paper, Al2O3 support was pre-treated by acetic acid to selectively remove hydroxyl groups without affecting the coordination environment of Al. Results revealed that the Al2O3 support after hydroxyl removal not only showed moderate metal–support interaction but also produced more sites for the adsorption and activation of the reactant, which significantly improves the utilization of nickel species and the stability of the catalyst. The conversion of CH4 and CO2 at 700 °C was as high as 88% and 90%, respectively, and has an excellent stability of 50 h. This study provides a feasible strategy for the design of highly active methane dry-reforming catalysts.

With the dramatic increase in the application of modern office equipment, such as laser printers and photocopiers, large amounts of waste toner powder are used and discarded, ending up in landfills around the world. As waste toner powder contains hazardous compounds that can seriously endanger both the environment and human health, it is urgent to deal with waste toner powder and convert it into high value-added products. In this work, we report, for the first time, visible-light-driven hydrogen production with waste toner activated by cheap Ni species (waste toner@Ni-species) as the photocatalyst. The Ni species adhered to the waste toner through in situ photoreduction, without sophisticated equipment. It is found that the Ni species were composed of metallic Ni and oxidized Ni, which worked in synergy to remarkably enhance the photocatalytic activity of the waste toner. Activated by the Ni species, the hydrogen evolution rate of the waste toner was accelerated by up to 62 times, and the apparent quantum efficiencies (AQEs) of the waste toner were boosted by up to 64 times. In addition, the waste toner@Ni-species exhibited a higher charge separation efficiency, faster interfacial charge transfer rate and ∼200 mV lower barrier for proton reduction than those of the pristine waste toner. In addition to these merits, the waste toner@Ni-species could be separated conveniently from the aqueous system using magnetic attraction, as the saturation magnetization and residual magnetism of the waste toner were improved with the assembly of the Ni species. The approach shown here indicates a simple and promising way to deal with waste toner by converting it to a cost-effective photocatalyst for producing clean energy.

The electronic and structural differences of anatase TiO2 (TiO2-A) and rutile TiO2 (TiO2-R) supported Ni catalysts are studied to understand the distinctively different catalytic pathways in guaiacol hydrodeoxygenation over Ni/TiO2-A and Ni/TiO2-R catalysts. Temperature programmed reduction profiles of NiO/TiO2-A and NiO/TiO2-R reveal two types of metal–support interactions. NiO on TiO2-R requires much higher temperature to reduce than NiO on TiO2-A by hydrogen reduction. Surface TiO2-A is partially reduced together with NiO at low temperature driven by strong interaction between reduced Ni and the reducible TiO2-A surface. In situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high resolution TEM (HRTEM), and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy of adsorbed CO reveal two types of reduced Ni species on Ni/TiO2-A: Ni0 particles and atomically dispersed electron-rich Niδ− atoms. While Ni0 particles are formed only at high Ni loadings, they are fully encapsulated by an overlayer of partially reduced TiOx, making the surface of Ni particles totally inaccessible to CO and to reactants. The electron-rich Niδ− atoms are favorably formed at all Ni loadings on the TiO2-A surface and show only linearly adsorbed CO in the DRIFT spectra. Electron transfer from Ti and O on the TiO2-A surface to atomically dispersed Ni is indicated by the observation of dominant electron-rich Niδ− species in conjunction with Ti(4+δ)+ and O(2−δ)− on Ni/TiO2-A following H2 reduction. In contrast, the chemical states of metallic Ni0 and Ti4+ remain unchanged on Ni/TiO2-R after H2 reduction. The atomically dispersed Niδ− species, formed only on the Ni/TiO2-A surface, is proposed as the active site responsible for the selective hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol to phenolics. In contrast, the metallic Ni0 particles formed on the Ni/TiO2-R surface catalyze the typical catalytic hydrogenation, preferentially saturating the aromatic ring.

Using urea oxidation reaction (UOR) instead of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of promising strategies for significantly diminish power consumption for hydrogen production from electrochemical water splitting. The electrocatalysts with cost-effective, multifunctional and high-performance are urgently required for enhancing UOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but this remains a challenge. Herein, we designed a bifunctional Ni(OH) x /p-Ni catalyst by electrochemical oxidation of Ni(OH) 2 in-situ grown on the surface of porous Ni membrane (p-Ni) to generate more abundant high-valence Ni 3+ active species, which is favorable for reducing the energy barrier of electrochemical reaction . At the same time, a large number of metallic oxygen bonds (Ni–O) were formed to optimize the reaction kinetics of the electrochemical process, thus promoting the overall urea electrolysis efficiency. In 1.0 M KOH with 0.3 M urea, the optimized Ni(OH) x /p-Ni only requires potentials of 1.38 V and 0.22 V to obtain a current density of 100 mA cm −2 for UOR and HER, respectively. Notably, by assembling the Ni(OH) x /p-Ni as the cathode and anode for hydrogen production from urea-assisted water splitting, it can drive a current density of 100 mA cm −2 at a low voltage of 1.52 V and has excellent stability. This work provides a feasible strategy for design efficiently non-noble metal electrocatalysts for energy-saving hydrogen production and purifying urea-rich wastewater.

In this work, a Ni-supported CeO 2 -Al 2 O 3 catalyst, called NiCeAl-RMO (reduced metal-oxide), was prepared via air calcination and H 2 reduction of NiCeAl-LDH (layered double hydroxide). The NiCeAl-RMO catalyst shows superior CO 2 methanation activity, especially at low temperature (250 °C), and it performed 78.6% CO 2 conversion with ∼ 100% CH 4 selectivity. Compared with NiAl-RMO, the NiCeAl-RMO catalyst prepared via the Ce-doping strategy has significantly improved CO 2 methanation activity. Characterizations revealed that Ce doping would increase the amount of active Ni 0 species, cause a large number of oxygen vacancies, and generate new moderate basicity sites on the catalyst. In addition, in situ DRIFTS found that, unlike the RWGS + CO methanation mechanism over NiAl-RMO, the CO 2 methanation mechanism over NiCeAl-RMO followed the formate pathway by generating bidentate carbonate species, which was revealed as a key intermediate for enhancing the low-temperature activity of CO 2 methanation.

To improve the DRM reaction performance of the catalysts, a series of Co–Ni/WC-AC catalysts are prepared by impregnation using WC-AC as the support. The structural features of the fresh and spent catalysts are characterized by BET, XRD , H 2 -TPR, XPS and TG . The results show that the introduction of Ni in the 20Co/WC-AC catalyst promotes the conversion of W species to WC. Further, WC enhances the interaction between the active metal and the support. Thus, the activity and sintering resistance of Co–Ni/WC-AC catalysts are improved. It is also found that the introduction of different ratios of Ni has a significant effect on the chemical environment (oxygen environment) on the catalyst surface.10Co–10Ni/WC-AC catalysts showed high surface O α and O β contents of 26% and 53%, respectively. The catalyst shows excellent catalytic performance. The conversion of CH 4 and CO 2 is stable at about 84% and 85% at 800 °C.

The Nickel-based catalysts have a good catalytic effect on the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural electrooxidation reaction (HMFOR), but limited by the conversion potential of Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ , 1.35 V versus RHE, the HMF electrooxidation potential of nickel-based catalysts is generally greater than 1.35 V versus RHE. Considering fluorine has the highest Pauling electronegativity and similar atomic radius of oxygen, the introduction of fluorine into the lattice of metal oxides might promote the adsorption of intermediate species, thus improving the catalytic performance. F is successfully doped into the lattice structure of NiCo 2 O 4 spinel oxide by the strategy of hydrothermal reaction and low-temperature fluorination. As is confirmed by in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, the introduction of F weakens the interaction force of metal-oxygen covalent bonds of the asymmetric M T -O-M O backbone and improves the valence of Ni in tetrahedra structure, which makes it easier to be oxidized to higher valence active Ni 3+ under the action of electric field and promotes the adsorption of OH − , while the decrease of Co valence enhances the adsorption of HMF with the catalyst. Combining the above reasons, F-NiCo 2 O 4 shows superb electrocatalytic performance with a potential of only 1.297 V versus RHE at a current density of 20 mA cm −2 , which is lower than the most catalyst.

A Ni/mSiO2-AE nanocatalyst was successfully prepared via loading the active nickel species on mSiO2 by an ammonia evaporation (AE) method. It exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the selective hydrogenation of benzoic acid with the conversion of benzoic acid and selectivity to cyclohexane carboxylic acid being 98.9% and 99.1%, respectively. Furthermore, the catalyst can be recycled four times without appreciable loss of its initial activity. As demonstrated by TEM, the active nickel species was highly dispersed with an average particle size of 3.2 nm in this nanocatalyst, which is much smaller than that of Ni/mSiO2-IMP (∼18 nm), prepared by a conventional impregnation method. TPR and XPS results revealed the existence of a stronger interaction between the active nickel species and the mSiO2 support in Ni/mSiO2-AE, compared to Ni/mSiO2-IMP. This strong metal–support interaction in Ni/mSiO2-AE can effectively suppress the loss of the active nickel species during the reaction, resulting in its good stability under relatively harsh reaction conditions.

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) electrooxidation for 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) production has become a sustainable method for value-added products at the anode. Here, an amorphous NiMo composite oxide supported on nickel foam (NF) is fabricated for HMF electrooxidation (HMFOR) via one-step electrodeposition. The synthesized NiMo/NF delivers 98.3% FE toward FDCA at 1.5 VRHE and maintains FE above 90% during 10 h. In situ Raman spectroscopy proves the formation of the active species Ni3+-OOH during the reaction process. Due to the introduction of high-valent Mo6+, the Ni3+ active species can be stabilized and the adsorption of aldehyde in HMF can be promoted during the reaction process, thus enhancing the FDCA electrosynthesis performance.

Promoting the self-reconstruction of NiFe-based catalysts represents a promising approach to facilitate seawater splitting, albeit with significant challenges. Herein, the redox cycle of Ni species is subtly regulated by decorating NiFe hydroxides with vanadium. Both experimental and theoretical studies demonstrate that the incorporation of V boosts the self-reconstruction of NiFe hydroxides and allows a superior OER performance on account of diminished propensity for chlorine adsorption and optimized binding energy of oxygen-containing intermediates. Consequently, the NiFeV/NF catalyst delivers 2.0 A cm −2 at an ultralow overpotential of 369 mV in 1.0 M KOH and exhibits exceptional stability for 720 h at 20 A in an alkaline membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyzer . In alkaline seawater , it achieves prolonged stability, surpassing 240 h at 500 mA cm −2 with OER selectivity of 99 %. This work significantly advances the field of seawater electrolysis powered by marine renewables, paving the way for on-site hydrogen production .
