High-efficiency radon adsorption by nickel nanoparticles supported on activated carbon

Xiangyuan Deng,Bo Yu,Haibiao Wu,Zhengzhong He,Meng Wang,Detao Xiao

Radon (Rn) is a universally known indoor radioactive gas that poses a significant threat to human health. Activated carbon (AC) is the only commercial Rn adsorbent; its adsorption performance is extremely limited due to too few micropores. A series of nickel nanoparticles supported on AC (Ni/AC) composites, combining abundant micropores with open metal sites, is rationally designed for adsorbing Rn via a two-step process consisting of impregnation and high-temperature reduction. The Rn adsorption performance of the Ni/AC composites is obviously improved due to the introduction of nickel nanoparticles. The adsorption coefficient of Ni/AC calcined at 800 °C reaches 6.56 ± 0.14 m3 kg−1 at 25 °C and 1 bar, 48% higher than that of AC. The Ni/AC Rn adsorption coefficient is similar over five cycles. The fine and homogeneous dispersion of nickel nanoparticles, the appropriate chemical state of nickel and the high content of Ni0 synergistically promote Rn adsorption on Ni/AC. Experiments verify that Ni/AC composites are a promising candidate for the adsorption of Rn in the atmospheric environment.

Facile immobilization of Ni nanoparticles into mesoporous MCM-41 channels for efficient methane dry reforming

Jingqing Tian,Haocheng Li,Xin Zeng,Zichun Wang,Jun Huang,Chen Zhao

ABSTRACT Development of dry reforming of methane and carbon dioxide is an effective route to convert in-dustrial waste gases such as coke-oven gas and coal-to-oil gas into platform syngas. However, this process encounters severe problems of metal particle sintering and coke formation at high tem-peratures. In this work, we developed a new synthetic method for preparing confined Ni/MCM-41 catalysts, which impede the sintering of metal nanoparticles (NPs) and coke deposition at high temperatures, enabling them to be successfully applied to methane dry reforming . The method results in high activity and stability of the catalyst at 700 °C for 200 h. The Ni precursor is immersed in ethanol and impregnated into MCM-41 by the peculiar capillary action of hexagonal straight mesopores . By this method, 10 wt% Ni NPs (d = 2 nm) is equably confined to the mesoporous channels with strong metal-support interactions, as confirmed by HRTEM, TEM mapping, H2-TPR, and XRD measurements. Such a confined structure has a significant effect on the inhibition of metal NP agglomeration and carbon deposition during methane dry reforming, as evidenced by TEM, Raman, TGA, and TPO measurements of used Ni/MCM-41 catalysts. In contrast, unconfined Ni/MCM-41 catalysts, with Ni NPs located on the pore exteriors, are rapidly deactivated after 12 h due to the blocked contact between the active metal centers and the gas feedstock. Additionally, a fast increase in the Ni NP size and the formation of substantial carbon nanotubes on the unconfined catalyst surface are seen. This work offers a facile approach for the synthesis of anti-sintering, car-bon-resistant confined Ni catalysts that can operate at high temperatures

Multiporous Carbon Encapsulated Ni Nanoparticles Promoting Glycerol Valorisation towards Hydrogenation against Rearrangement†

Bin Zhang,Bin Chen,Mark Douthwaite,Lipeng Tang,Yibo Zhang,Meng Wang,Ding Ma

Summary of main observation and conclusion A dual-templating method was used to synthesize a series of hierarchical carbon supports containing different proportions of spherical macropores ( ca. 200 nm in diameter) and mesoporous channels ( ca. 4 nm in diameter). These and some other conventional carbon materials were subsequently impregnated with Ni and tested for the conversion of glycerol. The hierarchical catalysts exhibited a significantly higher conversion (96%) and selectivity (77%) to 1,2-propanediol, and the specificity selectivity coefficient (6.1) towards 1,2-propanediol against lactic acid was three times higher than that observed over a conventional Ni/C micro catalyst (2.1). The enhanced performance of these materials, compared with the Ni nanoparticles supported on conventional carbon supports, was attributed to their high surface areas (> 1110 m 2 ∙g −1 ) and large pore volumes ( ca . 0.4 cm 3 ∙g −1 ) permitting greater accessibility of substrate and/or intermediates to Ni active sites. Given that the concentration of accessible Ni sites in these materials is higher, a competitive benzilic-acid-rearrangement reaction to produce lactic acid was suppressed, leading to an enhanced hydrogenation selectivity to 1,2-propanediol. This study evidences the potential benefits, which can be established from utilizing hierarchical support materials in the valorization of biomass.

Role of Nickel Nanoparticles in High-Performance TiO2/Ni/Carbon Nanohybrid Lithium/Sodium-Ion Battery Anodes

Xiaoyan Wang,Dong Zhao,Chao Wang,Yonggao Xia,Wenshuai Jiang,Senlin Xia,Shanshan Yin,Xiuxia Zuo,Ezzeldin Metwalli,Ying Xiao,Zaicheng Sun,Jin Zhu,Peter Müller-Buschbaum,Ya-Jun Cheng

Graphical The Matrix Reloaded 2 : In situ synthesized super-small TiO 2 and nickel nanoparticles uniformly embedded in the carbon matrix effectively improve the electrochemical performance as both lithium-ion and sodium-ion battery anodes due to a significantly enhanced charge-carrier mobility by the nickel nanoparticles. Super-small sized TiO 2 nanoparticles are in situ co-composited with carbon and nickel nanoparticles in a facile scalable way, using difunctional methacrylate monomers as solvent and carbon source. Good control over crystallinity, morphology, and dispersion of the nanohybrid is achieved because of the thermosetting nature of the resin polymer. The effects of the nickel nanoparticle on the composition, crystallographic phase, structure, morphology, tap density, specific surface area, and electrochemical performance as both lithium-ion and sodium-ion battery anodes are systematically investigated. It is found that the incorporation of the in situ formed nickel nanoparticles with certain content effectively enhances the electrochemical performance including reversible capacities, cyclic stability and rate performance as both lithium-ion and sodium-ion battery anodes. The experimental I-V profiles at different temperatures and theoretical calculations reveal that the charge carriers are accumulated in the amorphous carbon regions, which act as scattering centers to the carriers and lower the carrier mobility for the composite. With increasing nickel content, the mobility of the charge carriers is significantly increased, while the number of the charge carriers maintains almost constant. The nickel nanoparticles provide extra pathways for the accumulated charge, leading to reduced scatterings among the charge carriers and enhanced charge-carrier transportation.

N-doped core–shell mesoporous carbon spheres embedded by Ni nanoparticles for CO2 electroreduction

Du Juan,Lin Qin-Yan,Zhang Jian-Qi,Hou Sen-Lin,Chen Ai-Bing

Herein, we successfully prepare highly dispersed and uniform small nano-size nickel nanoparticles embedded on core–shell carbon spheres by confined-deposition method. The mesoporous silica layer containing surfactant coated on the surface of the polymer sphere provides confined space and effectively controls the growth of nickel nanoparticles during pyrolysis. At the same time, the introduction of nickel species has an impact on structure of the obtained carbon spheres, and it can promote the deposition of carbon to realize the adjustment from hollow to core–shell and then to solid spheres. Owing to the uniform distribution of Ni nanoparticles with small size, mesoporous structure, N-doping groups, high specified surface areas, and core–shell structure, the obtained catalyst shows exciting ability for the production of CO by reduction of CO 2 with a maximum CO Faradaic efficiency of 98%, indicating its promising prospect in electro-reduction of CO 2 . Monodispersed Ni Nanoparticles Supported on Porous Glass: Composition and Size Controllable Synthesis

C. Shen,Y. Li,Y. J. Wang,J. H. Xu,G. S. Luo

We have put forward a facile and efficient strategy to immobilize Ni nanoparticles on porous glass by integrating two processes of ion-exchange and reduction in one step. The in situ method avoids the use of high temperature and stabilizers which may reduce catalytic activity. The adsorption process could be described by a Langmuir model with the adsorption capacity of 46.4 ± 0.9 mg/g. Monodispersed Ni nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 1.8 nm showed high catalytic activity for cyclohexene hydrogenation. When the Ni content was 1.144 wt %, 100% conversion was obtained with the space time of only 17.7 s. Notably, the strategy may also be applied to other base metal nanoparticles. Cu and Co nanoparticles with the mean diameter of 5.7 and 3.4 nm were successfully immobilized, respectively. This method may be readily changed to prepare other supported transition-metal nanoparticles with catalytic properties and opens new avenues to coordination catalysis.

Bi-magnetic Mn3O4@Ni core–shell binary superparticles: Self-assembly preparation and magnetic behaviors

Wanjie Xu,Yuanzhi Chen,Liubin Shi,Laisen Wang,Dong-Liang Peng

Binary superparticles formed by self-assembling two different types of nanoparticles may utilize the synergistic interactions and create advanced multifunctional materials. Bi-magnetic superparticles with a core–shell structure have unique properties due to their specific spatial configurations. Herein, we built Mn 3 O 4 @Ni core–shell binary superparticles via an emulsion self-assembly technique. The superparticles are generated with a spherical morphology, and have a typical average size of about 240 nm. By altering the ratio of the two magnetic nanoparticles , the thickness of Ni shells can be adjusted. Oleic acid ligands are crucial for the formation of core–shell structure. Magnetic analysis suggests that core–shell superparticles display dual-phase magnetic interactions, contrasting with the single-phase magnetic behaviors of commonly core–shell magnetic nanoparticles . The calculation on the effective magnetic anisotropy constants indicates that the presence of Ni shell layers reduces the dipole interactions among the Mn 3 O 4 core particles. Due to the presence of Ni nanoparticle shells, the blocking temperature of Mn 3 O 4 is reduced, while the Curie temperature of Mn 3 O 4 is independent on Ni content. Tunable magnetic properties can be achieved by modulating the Ni nanoparticle shell thickness. This study offers insights for the development of core–shell superparticles with varied magnetic characteristics.

Size-controlled synthesis of monodisperse nickel nanoparticles and investigation of their magnetic and catalytic properties

Yuan Pan,Rongrong Jia,Jinchong Zhao,Jilei Liang,Yunqi Liu,Chenguang Liu

Monodisperse nickel nanoparticles (NPs) with different size were synthesized via the thermal decomposition approach using nickel acetylacetonate as precursors and trioctylphosphine as surfactant in oleylamine. The structure and morphology of as-synthesized nickel NPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The surface states of as-synthesized nickel NPs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra. The textural properties of as-synthesized nickel NPs were characterized by N 2 adsorption–desorption. The size of as-synthesized nickel NPs was found to be easily controlled by changing synthetic conditions, including P:Ni precursor ratio, reaction temperature, reaction time and oleylamine quantity, and the possible growth mechanism of nickel NPs was proposed. In addition, the magnetic measurements showed that the as-synthesized nickel NPs exhibited superparamagnetism characteristics at room temperature , and the saturation magnetization increased significantly with the increase in nickel NPs’ size. Finally, the size-dependent catalytic properties of nickel NPs for cyclohexane dehydrogenation reaction were studied. The results demonstrated that the catalytic activity can be enhanced by decreasing the size of NPs, which indicated that the dehydrogenation reaction of cyclohexane on nickel NPs was structure sensitive reaction.

“Wane and wax” strategy: Enhanced evolution kinetics of liquid phase Li2S4 to Li2S via mutually embedded CNT sponge/Ni-porous carbon electrocatalysts

Xiaoxiao Liu,Qian Guo,Yu Li,Yue Ma,Xiaotao Ma,Panpan Liu,Donghong Duan,Zhonglin Zhang,Xianxian Zhou,Shibin Liu

The lithium-sulfur battery (Li-S) has been considered a promising energy storage system, however, in the practical application of Li-S batteries, considerable challenges remain. One challenge is the low kinetics involved in the conversion of Li 2 S 4 to Li 2 S. Here, we reveal that highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles play a unique role in the reduction of Li 2 S 4 . Ni-porous carbon (Ni-PC) decorated in situ on a free-standing carbon nanotube sponge (CNTS/Ni-PC) enriches the current response of liquid phase Li 2 S 4 and Li 2 S 2 around the cathode more than 8.1 and 5.7 times higher than that of the CNTS blank sample, respectively, greatly boosting the kinetics and decreasing the reaction overpotential of Li 2 S 4 reduction (lower Tafel slope and larger current response). Thus, with the same total overpotential, more space is provided for the concentration difference overpotential, allowing the more soluble polysulfide intermediates farther away from the surface of the conductive materials to be reduced based on the “wane and wax” strategy, and significantly improving the sulfur utilization. Consequently, S@CNTS/Ni-PC delivers excellent rate performance (812.4 mAh·g −1 at 2C) and a remarkable areal capacity of 10.1 mAh·cm −2 . This work provides a viable strategy for designing a target catalyst to enhance the conversion kinetics in the Li 2 S 4 reduction process.

Enhanced Electromagnetic Wave-Absorbing Performance of Magnetic Nanoparticles-Anchored 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene

Luyang Liang,Ruishu Yang,Gaojie Han,Yuezhan Feng,Biao Zhao,Rui Zhang,Yaming Wang,Chuntai Liu

Two-dimensional Ti3C2Tx MXene-based hybrids-anchored magnetic metal nanoparticles show a huge potential application as effective wave absorbers due to the synergistic electromagnetic (EM) loss effect. In this work, uniform and size-controllable nickel, cobalt, or nickel–cobalt alloy nanoparticles were in situ grown on the surface of MXene via a facile and moderate co-solvothermal method for the first time. As an example, a nickel nanoparticles-anchored MXene (Ni@MXene) hybrid was homodispersed into dielectric polyvinylidene fluoride to develop its EM wave-absorbing capacity to a great extent. As expected, the results showed strong reflection loss (RLmin = −52.6 dB at 8.4 GHz), broad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB = 3.7 GHz including 71% of X-band), low loading (10 wt % Ni@MXene), and thin thickness (3.0 mm). By adjusting the sample thickness, EAB can cover completely the whole X-band with a maximum of 6.1 GHz, showing a huge potential of Ni@MXene hybrid applying as aircraft stealth coating. The mechanism analyses revealed that the excellent impedance matching, magnetocoupling effect, conductance, magnetic loss, and multiple scatterings contribute to the splendid EM wave-absorbing performance of the Ni@MXene hybrid. Considering the excellent overall performance, the Ni@MXene hybrid was identified as a promising candidate for EM wave absorption.

In Situ Confined Growth Based on a Self-Templating Reduction Strategy of Highly Dispersed Ni Nanoparticles in Hierarchical Yolk–Shell Fe@SiO2 Structures as Efficient Catalysts

Jiao Jiao,Haiyan Wang,Wanchun Guo,Ruifei Li,Kesong Tian,Zhaopeng Xu,Yin Jia,Yuehao Wu,Ling Cao

Graphical Get the yolk ! A hierarchical yolk–shell Fe@SiO 2 /Ni catalyst with an inner movable Fe core and an ultrathin SiO 2 /Ni shell assembled from nanosheets was synthesized by a self-templating reduction strategy (see figure). The spatial confinement of 4 nm Ni nanoparticles in ultrathin SiO 2 nanosheets (2.6 nm thick) could prevent their agglomeration during catalytic reductions and expose the abundant active Ni sites to reactants, to provide high activity and stability. Ni-based magnetic catalysts exhibit moderate activity, low cost, and magnetic reusability in hydrogenation reactions. However, Ni nanoparticles anchored on magnetic supports commonly suffer from undesirable agglomeration during catalytic reactions due to the relatively weak affinity of the magnetic support for the Ni nanoparticles. A hierarchical yolk–shell Fe@SiO 2 /Ni catalyst, with an inner movable Fe core and an ultrathin SiO 2 /Ni shell composed of nanosheets, was synthesized in a self-templating reduction strategy with a hierarchical yolk–shell Fe 3 O 4 @nickel silicate nanocomposite as the precursor. The spatial confinement of highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles with a mean size of 4 nm within ultrathin SiO 2 nanosheets with a thickness of 2.6 nm not only prevented their agglomeration during catalytic transformations but also exposed the abundant active Ni sites to reactants. Moreover, the large inner cavities and interlayer spaces between the assembled ultrathin SiO 2 /Ni nanosheets provided suitable mesoporous channels for diffusion of the reactants towards the active sites. As expected, the Fe@SiO 2 /Ni catalyst displayed high activity, high stability, and magnetic recoverability for the reduction of nitroaromatic compounds. In particular, the Ni-based catalyst in the conversion of 4-nitroamine maintained a rate of over 98 % and preserved the initial yolk–shell structure without any obvious aggregation of Ni nanoparticles after ten catalytic cycles, which confirmed the high structural stability of the Ni-based catalyst.

A Cost Effective Cobalt Nickel Nanoparticles Catalyst with Exceptional Performance for Hydrolysis of Ammonia-Borane

Wang Qingtao,Zhang Feifei,Du Fanglin,Liu Tong

Herein, we successfully report the development a new cost effective CoNi nanoparticles catalyst for the hydrolysis of ammonia borane. The prepared nanocatalysts have been characterized by ICP– AES, XPS, TEM and HR-TEM. The results show that the CoNi nanoparticles with the size of 4.6 nm are successfully supported vulcanxc-72 surface by a simple co-reduced route. The synthesized CoNi nanocatalysts possess an exceptional catalytic performance for hydrolysis of ammonia-borane corresponding to TOF value of 49 molH2 molcat −1 min−1 at 323 K. The excellent catalytic property is attributed not only the formation of ultrafine nanoparticles on vulcanxc-72 surface but also synergistic effect between Co and Ni. More importantly, the catalytic property for hydrolysis of ammonia borane do not obviously decline up to 6 recycles, which shows the exceptional reusability of CoNi NPs/vulcanxc-72.
