Designing and synthesizing stable, low-cost, and eco-friendly precious-metal-free electrocatalysts with high performance for hydrogen evolution is a critical and challenging task in the research and development of renewable hydrogen energy. Herein, we show an interfacial engineering strategy to synthesize the NiCoP nanosheets/NiCoP nanocubes homojunction electrocatalyst supported on Ni foam (2D/3D-NiCoP/NF). The as-synthesized 2D/3D-NiCoP/NF catalyst shows impressive HER activity, and a current density of 10 mA cm −2 can be achieved with only an overpotential of 37 mV in 1 M KOH solution. Such impressive HER performance of this 2D/3D-NiCoP/NF homojunction electrocatalyst is principally due to the exposure of abundance accessible active sites originated from the hierarchical structure of nanocubes on the nanosheets. Moreover, the intimate contact between 2D/3D-NiCoP and NF can simultaneously shorten the electron transport pathway and improve its stability. This novel 2D/3D-NiCoP/NF homojunction is expected to provide a powerful interface-engineering reference for the design and construction of high-efficiency synergistic HER electrocatalysts.

Tuning structure, morphology and electronic state of electrocatalysts is essential to achieve highly efficient water splitting. Herein, we report synthesis of snap bean-like multi-dimensional core/shell Ni/NiCoP nano-heterojunctions (NHs) by adopting a solid phase transformation strategy. In the special structure, Ni nanoparticles are enclosed and strung by single phased NiCoP, forming strings of Ni/NiCoP core/shell heterojunctions, which showed improved stability and activity for both hydrogen evolution (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and synchrotron-radiation-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveal that interactions at the interface of Ni/NiCoP greatly changed electronic structures, which is a key intrinsic factor to underpin the enhanced electrocatalytic performance. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate Ni/NiCoP interface provide more optimal binding strength for H adatom and H 2 O molecule for HER, strong capture of hydroxyl, high valence Ni/Co species for OER. All these peculiarities facilitate the electrocatalytic process: only 1.57 V was needed to reach the current density of 10 mA·cm −2 for the overall water splitting using Ni/NiCoP NHs as both electrodes. This work demonstrates a facile strategy for synthesis of sophisticated catalytic interface at nano level and endows nano-heterojunction catalysts with enhanced performance for catalytic applications.

In this article, the hydrogen evolution performance in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1.0 M KOH is improved by introducing N atoms into Ni 2 P/Co 2 P through high-temperature doping (N–Ni 2 P/Co 2 P). N–Ni 2 P/Co 2 P has a lower overpotential than Ni 2 P/Co 2 P, which can achieve cathodic current densities of 10 mA cm −2 , 100 mA cm −2 at overpotentials of 48 mV, 228 mV in 1.0 M KOH and 63 mV, 211 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . Density functional theory (DFT) results found that the introduction of N atoms changed the electronic structure of the catalyst. Due to the forward shift of d-band center, the binding force between the catalyst and H∗ is enhanced, providing favorable conditions for hydrogen evolution. Furthermore, the results of scaled-up tests show that 5 cm × 5 cm N–Ni 2 P/Co 2 P electrodes still exhibit superior performance, revealing a prospect of industrialization.

The synthesis and design of non-precious and efficient electrocatalysts by an eco-friendly technique are required for renewable and clean energy. This work reports a successful synthesis of nickel-cobalt phosphide (Ni-Co-P) anchored on carbon fiber cloth (CFC) for advanced electrocatalytic applications. Detail structural and morphological analyses reveal that the interfacial growth of Ni-Co-P on CFC possesses a unique hexagonal sheet exteriorly decorated with nanoneedles around the edges depicting a cactus-like morphology. This Ni-Co-P/CFC exhibits unprecedented electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with a current density of 10 and 200 mA cm −2 acquires at the overpotential of 43 and 149 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), respectively. Based on cyclic-voltammetry (CV) and Tafel plot results, it is deduced that this high activity is mainly credited to the large surface area and a large number of active sites from the hexagonal multilayer-sheet decorated with nanoneedles profile. Moreover, no significant deactivation is observed even after running for 12 h or at least 2000 CV cycles, suggesting excellent stability, making it a promising electrocatalyst. It is expected that our work could provide a new strategy to design non-precious and efficient electrocatalysts for practical applications with highly-active and better-durability for HER.

Transition metal phosphides have been regarded as reliable supercapacitor electrode materials and extensively researched. In this work, a facile three-step way has been taken to synthesize NiCoP@NiCoP core–shell nanoarrays directly grown on carbon cloth, which was used as a high-performance supercapacitor electrode. Compared with the NiCo-LDH precursor and NiCoP nanowire and NiCoP nanosheet, NiCoP@NiCoP core–shell composite shows higher electrochemical performance owing to the integration of the advantages of phosphides and core–shell structure. To be specific, the as-fabricated NiCoP C–S electrode exhibits great electrochemical performance with high specific capacitance (1492.5 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 ), good rate performance (68.82% of the initial specific capacitance at 15 A g −1 ) and outstanding cycling stability (maintains 80.9% of the initial capacitances after 5000 cycles at 10 A g −1 ). Moreover, the assembled NiCoP C–S//rGO asymmetric supercapacitor device delivers a high energy density of 48.13 Wh kg −1 at the power density of 1125 W kg −1 and it still retains 20.94 Wh kg −1 at a high power density of 11250 W kg −1 , indicating its great possibility of practical application.

Advanced materials for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are significant for future sustainable energy. On the basis of transition metal phosphides (TMPs), we developed a method to engineer well-dispersed NiCoP nanoparticles by introducing carbon nanotubes on Ni Foam (CNT/NF) as a high active electrocatalyst for HER. The obtained catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and the catalytic activity was evaluated by electrochemical technique. The as-prepared NiCoP/CNT/NF electrode exhibits efficient electrocatalytic activity towards HER with an onset overpotential of 69 mV and a small Tafel slope in 1 M KOH. These results suggest the possibility for creating binder-free CNTs supported and element doped electrode in electrochemical water splitting.

Though transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have been applied as an efficient and cost-effective catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), their large-scale application is still restrained by their lack of activity and durability. In this work, a novel vanadium doped nickel cobalt phosphide catalyst supported on carbon cloth (V-NiCoP/CC) is fabricated by a facile hydrothermal and phosphate method. Remarkably, V-NiCoP/CC only need the overpotential of 52 mV to drive 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH solution, which is superior to many state-of-art transition monometallic phosphides electrocatalysts. Meanwhile, V-NiCoP/CC exhibits a low tafel slope of 51.2 mV dec -1 and superior stability in 2000 CV cycles and 40 h of long-term stability test. Furthermore, this work verifies that doping heteroatom provides new opportunities to enhance the HER performance of transition bimetallic phosphides with effect on their morphology and electrochemical properties.

The design of ultra-stable cathode materials of Li-O 2 batteries with excellent catalytic performance is very important and desirable. However, some problems such as sluggish electrochemical reaction kinetics and unwanted side reactions still remain challenging. Carbon materials own hierarchical porous structure which facilitates mass transport and accommodates discharge products but are not stable enough as cathode of Li-O 2 batteries. Here in, we fabricated a unique NiCo bimetallic phosphide combined with carbon nanotube heterostructure (abbreviated as NiCoP/CNT) by hydrothermal method. Density functional theory (abbreviated as DFT) calculation demonstrates that bimetallic phosphide NiCoP/CNT delivered much better electrical conductivity, greater adsorption to reactants, and more electron transfer with discharge products Li 2 O 2 , compared to monometallic phosphides CoP and Ni 2 P. Therefore, NiCoP/CNT based cathode displayed low overpotential of 0.87 V at current of 100 mA g −1 with a fixed specific capacity of 1000 mAh g −1 and run steadily over 150 cycles under high current of 500 mA g −1 with a fixed specific capacity of 1000 mAh g −1 . Furthermore, Ex-situ X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and in-situ differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy proved the existence of intermediate products Li 2-x O 2 . This approach provides a reference for designing and synthesis of bimetallic cathode in Li-O 2 batteries.

Cadmium sulfide (CdS) as one of the most common visible-light-responsive photocatalysts has been widely investigated for hydrogen generation. However, its low solar–hydrogen conversion efficiency caused by fast carrier recombination and poor catalytic activity hinders its practical applications. To address this issue, we develop a novel and highly efficient nickel–cobalt phosphide and phosphate cocatalyst-modified CdS (NiCoP/CdS/NiCoPi) photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution. The dual-cocatalysts were simultaneously deposited on CdS during one phosphating step by using sodium hypophosphate as the phosphorus source. After the loading of the dual-cocatalysts, the photocurrent of CdS significantly increased, while its electrical impedance and photoluminescence emission dramatically decreased, which indicates the enhancement of charge carrier separation. It was proposed that the NiCoP cocatalyst accepts electrons and promotes hydrogen evolution, while the NiCoPi cocatalyst donates electrons and accelerates the oxidation of sacrificial agents (e.g., lactic acid). Consequently, the visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution of this composite photocatalyst greatly improved. The dual-cocatalyst-modified CdS with a loading content of 5 mol % showed a high hydrogen evolution rate of 80.8 mmol·g–1·h–1, which was 202 times higher than that of bare CdS (0.4 mmol·g–1·h–1). This is the highest enhancement factor for metal phosphide-modified CdS photocatalysts. It also exhibited remarkable stability in a continuous photocatalytic test with a total reaction time of 24 h.

Developing economical and robust electrocatalysts to prevent chlorine ions corrosion and improve seawater splitting efficiency is essential for seawater electrolysis. Herein, fluorine-doped nickel cobalt phospho-sulfide nanowires (F-NiCoPS NWs) were synthesized as high-performance catalysts for overall seawater splitting. The strongly electronegative F anion is favorable to build weak metal fluorine bonds, which easily break to generate highly active species of Ni/Co-hydroxides/oxyhydroxides protective layer on the electrode surface. This process effectively avoids chlorine evolution reaction (ClER)-induced dissolution, and enhances the stability of catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the electronegative fluorine affects the electronic structure of the catalyst’ surface, further enhancing the adsorption energy and electronic conductivity of the reaction intermediates. F-NiCoPS with appropriate F doping significantly decreased the overpotential (228 (303) mV at 10 (100) mA cm-2) and the Tafel slope (44 mV dec-1) in alkaline seawater, and exhibited a long stability of 100 h. This work provides new insights for constructing effective, cost-efficient and non-noble metal electrocatalyst for alkaline seawater splitting.

The construction of a novel 3D self-supported integrated Ni x Co 2− x P@NC (0 < x < 2) nanowall array (NA) on Ni foam (NF) electrode constituting highly dispersed Ni x Co 2− x P nanoparticles, nanorods, nanocapsules, and nanodendrites embedded in N-doped carbon (NC) NA grown on NF is reported. Benefiting from the collective effects of special morphological and structural design and electronic structure engineering, the Ni x Co 2− x P@NC NA/NF electrodes exhibit superior electrocatalytic performance for water splitting with an excellent stability in a wide pH range. The optimal NiCoP@NC NA/NF electrode exhibits the best hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity in acidic solution so far, attaining a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at an overpotential of 34 mV. Moreover, the electrode manifests remarkable performances toward both HER and oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline medium with only small overpotentials of 37 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and 305 mV at 50 mA cm −2 , respectively. Most importantly, when coupling with the NiCoP@NC NA/NF electrode for overall water splitting, an alkali electrolyzer delivers a current density of 20 mA cm −2 at a very low cell voltage of ≈1.56 V. In addition, the NiCoP@NC NA/NF electrode has outstanding long-term durability at j = 10 mA cm −2 with a negligible degradation in current density over 22 h in both acidic and alkaline media.

The high overpotential of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the undesirable chlorine evolution reaction (ClER) severely limit the hydrogen production efficiency of seawater electrolysis. The organic electrooxidation reactions, involving C–H bond oxidation with low bond dissociation energy in the rate-limiting step, can possess lower oxidation potential than the OER as well as prevent the ClER. Herein, we demonstrate a strategy for replacing the sluggish OER by thermodynamically favorable biomass oxidation for scaling up the electrolysis of alkaline seawater. A xylose electrooxidation reaction (XOR) holds great promise for superseding the OER in seawater electrolysis, which not only simultaneously produces valuable formic acid and hydrogen, but also improves energy utilization. By utilizing NiCoP metal phosphide as the bifunctional electrode, the XOR shows an apparent overpotential reduction of 290 mV at 100 mA cm−2 as compared with the OER in the alkaline seawater electrolyte. Furthermore, the xylose-assisted seawater electrolysis exhibits a high formic acid selectivity of at least 94.6% and a high hydrogen production rate of 150 mL cm−2. This work provides a universal and an effective pathway for hydrogen production from seawater and biomass upgrading.
