The development of highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts is crucial for the practical application of water splitting in renewable energy production. The Ni-Fe Phosphate electrocatalyst was synthesized through a simple and scalable electrodeposition method. This study presents a comprehensive investigation into the surface reconstruction engineering of an amorphous Ni-Fe phosphate electrocatalyst for enhancing its performance in alkaline water splitting. The reconstructed electrocatalyst exhibits significantly improved activity in alkaline water splitting. As expected, a low cell voltage of 1.86V was used to drive water splitting at 300 mA cm −2 , while the electrodes maintained high stability during 180 h continuous full water splitting at 70 mA cm −2 . This work provides insights into the mechanisms underlying the enhanced performance of the reconstructed Ni-Fe Phosphate based electrocatalyst and offers a promising approach for the design of advanced electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Development of transition metal phosphides with tunable morphology and chemical composition is a potential way to construct electrocatalysts with superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity in a wide range of pH values. In this work, vertical nanorods are constructed from nickel and iron phosphide grown on a carbon cloth (Ni 2 P-Fe 2 P/CC) via a hydrothermal treatment followed by low-temperature phosphorization method to achieve an effective catalyst for sufficient HER activity and strong stability. The Ni 2 P-Fe 2 P/CC exhibits remarkable overpotentials of 78, 80, and 87 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mAcm −2 in acidic, alkaline, and neutral electrolytes, respectively. Furthermore, it shows strong stability without significant performance change for 20 h, 30 h, and 30 h under 100 mAcm −2 in acidic, alkaline, and neutral electrolytes, respectively. This outstanding catalytic performance for HER in a wide pH range can be accredited to the synergistic effect induced by the coexistence of Ni and Fe atoms. Additionally, the integration of nanorods on the nanosheet also initiates fast transfer of hydrogen bubbles within the electrolyte, thereby enhancing its HER activity. The results present an opportunity to construct a low-cost, effective transition metal phosphide with unique architecture and strong durability for efficient HER activity in a wide range of pH values.

Transition metal phosphides have garnered significant attention as cost-effective alternatives to noble metal catalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OER). In this study, we developed a novel NiFe phosphide (NiFeP) nanosheet catalyst grown on nickel foam (NF) through an in-situ process followed by phosphidation. The resulting nanosheet array grows vertically from the NF surface, with densely packed, porous nanosheet, ensuring strong substrate adhesion. This architecture enhances electron transfer, exposes abundant catalytic sites and boosts conductivity. The catalyst exhibits exceptional OER performance, with an overpotential of 185 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , and maintains stability at 300 mA cm −2 over 40 h. This method simplifies synthesis of self-supported NiFeP/NF with enhanced crystallinity under mild conditions while delivering superior catalytic activity and durability compared to most reported NiFe-based phosphide catalysts. The NiFeP/NF emerges as a scalable alternative for hydrogen production, offering valuable insights into the design of advanced electrocatalysts for efficient water splitting.

Transition metal phosphides have been recognized as promising electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their low cost and high activity. However, the insufficient exposed active region limited the OER performance. Recently, the introduction of sacrificial dopants has been considered an effective strategy to enlarge the surface area. Herein, the Zn dopants are introduced in NiFe phosphide (NiFeZnP) nanosheet, which work as the sacrificial dopants to generate more exposed active NiFe sites and promote the formation of the NiFeOOH active phase during OER process. The optimized Zn-doped NiFeP catalyst shows an overpotential of ≈203 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, and a stability of 100 h at 1000 mA cm −2 . Overall, this work provides a sacrificial Zn doping strategy to prepare highly efficient OER electrocatalysts.

Highly active and stable catalysts toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is extremely important but challenging for overall water splitting. Herein, a strategy by modulating surface electron densities is adopted to design new catalyst: the Ru-NiFe-P nanosheets on 3D self-supported nickel foam was developed by doping a small quantity of Ru into transition metals phosphates. The designed catalyst displays excellent electrocatalytic performance in 1.0 M KOH, with low overpotentials of 44 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for HER and 242 mV at 100 mA cm −2 for OER. Particularly, it only needs 1.47 V to yield 10 mA cm −2 for overall water splitting. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Ru-incorporated NiFe-P can generate new active sites on Ru atoms and increase the catalytic activity of original P sites leading to an optimal Gibbs free-energy on catalysts surface. This work offers a new perspective for designing admirable electrocatalysts.

Developing efficient and nonprecious electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for the hydrogen generation via water splitting. Here we report the direct growth of heterostructural Ni 2 P–Fe 2 P hybrid electrocatalysts on NiFe foams. The redox engineered NiFe foam (rNF) significantly enhances the OER performance. Among prepared catalysts, Ni 2 P–Fe 2 P/rNF performs the highest OER activity, driving the current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 at low overpotentials of 218 and 270 mV in 1 M KOH, respectively. Meanwhile, it can maintain 100 mA cm −2 for 24 h without obvious degradation. The morphology and composition of NFP/rNF after OER test were carefully studied. This work suggests that self-supported bimetal phosphides of NFP/rNF is an efficient and durable electrode material for water oxidation .

To realize highly efficient and stable hydrogen production at high current densities, more efforts are devoted to developing outstanding water-splitting electrocatalysts. Herein, through a facile hydrothermal-phosphorization method, Mn-doped Ni 2 P/Fe 2 P was rationally designed and prepared as a high-performance bifunctional electrocatalyst for alkaline freshwater/seawater splitting. In alkaline seawater (freshwater) electrolyte, it merely needs low overpotentials of 358 (3 3 5) and 470 (4 0 5) mV to reach 1000 mA cm −2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. This electrocatalyst also shows excellent stability even at a high OER current density of 500 mA cm −2 for 200 h. Regarding the alkaline overall seawater splitting, Mn-doped Ni 2 P/Fe 2 P presents a low cell voltage of 2.02 V at 500 mA cm −2 and outstanding stability for 120 h at the same current. The X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) experimental analysis verifies that the Mn doping and Ni 2 P/Fe 2 P heterointerfaces can efficiently optimize the electrocatalyst’s electronic structure, leading to the improved intrinsic OER and HER activities. Meanwhile, the 3D nanoflower structure provides abundant exposed active sites, and the Mn doping and heterointerfaces can create more active sites. Besides, the high corrosion resistance resulting from nickel-iron phosphides makes the electrocatalyst become a good candidate for seawater splitting. This study provides a simple path to fabricate highly active and robust non-noble electrocatalysts for freshwater/seawater splitting at high current densities.

High-performance earth-abundant electrocatalysts for oxygen and hydrogen evolutions are highly desired for renewable energy but remain challenging. Herein, we have developed ultrathin NiFeP nanosheets , and merged the NiFeP with a 3D support of sponge-like strutted graphenes (SG). The synthesized NiFeP/SG, a porous monolith, shows efficient electrocatalytic activities for oxygen and hydrogen evolutions in alkaline electrolyte with low overpotentials of 218 and 115 mV, respectively. Using NiFeP/SG as direct catalytic electrodes, the overall water splitting requires a low cell voltage of 1.54 V to achieve a current of 10 mA cm −2 . The high performances result from the shifted-up d states caused by iron incorporation, the ultrathin NiFeP, and the 3D network structure of SG. Additionally, NiFeP/SG demonstrates excellent gravimetric catalytic activities , meaningful to aerospace and portables. The material opens the way to a universal robust lightweight catalytic electrode for a variety of applications in electrochemical energy storage and conversion .

Exploring low-cost and outstanding bimetallic phosphides to substitute noble metals as electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media is essential for renewable energy technologies. Herein, bimetallic nickel-iron phosphides nanoparticles (P-NiFe-800 NPs) with rich defects have been synthesized through gas annealing at 800 °C and phosphorization using uniform nickel-iron nanocubes (NiFe NCs) as precursor. At optimized calcination temperature, the obtained P-NiFe-800 NPs are composed of uniform nanoparticles with the rough surface, which suggests the larger surface area and more exposed rich active sites than other samples for OER. The introduction of P element to binary nickel-iron metals can optimize the crystalline and electronic structures of NiFe NCs and thus enhance electrocatalytic properties . Owing to the distinct morphological structure and synergistic effect between nickel-iron and phosphorus, P-NiFe-800 NPs demonstrate superior electrocatalytic activities for OER with lower overpotential of 270.1 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , smaller Tafel slope of 39 mV dec −1 , lower electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) value, bigger determined double-layer capacitance (C dl ) of 2130 uF cm −2 and prominent stability than NiFe NCs, NiFe-600 NPs, NiFe-700 NPs, NiFe-800 NPs, NiFe-900 NPs, P-NiFe NCs, P-NiFe-600 NPs, P-NiFe-700 NPs and P-NiFe-900 NPs. The optimized phosphorization is helpful for fabricating the bimetallic phosphides as efficient catalysts for OER.

Highly efficient earth-abundant electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are of great importance for renewable energy conversion systems. Herein, guided by theoretical calculations, we demonstrate highly efficient water splitting in alkaline solution using quarternary mixed nickel iron phosphosulfide (Ni1–xFexPS3) nanosheets (NSs), even though neither NiPS3 nor FePS3 is a good HER (or OER) electrocatalyst. With tuned electronic structure and improved electrical conductivity induced by mixing appropriate amount of Fe into NiPS3, Ni0.9Fe0.1PS3 NSs display excellent HER activity (an overpotential of 72 mV vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) at a geometric catalytic current density of −10 mA cm–2 and a Tafel slope of 73 mV dec–1), which is among the best HER catalysts under alkaline conditions. Ni0.9Fe0.1PS3 NSs also show a good apparent OER activity (an overpotential of 329 mV vs RHE at a catalytic current density of 20 mA cm–2 and a Tafel slope of 69 mV dec–1), although structural investigation indicates the formation of Ni(Fe)OOH and Ni(Fe)(OH)2 layers on the catalyst surface after OER reactions as likely the real active species. These mixed nickel iron phosphosulfide non-precious-metal electrocatalysts with enhanced intrinsic activity and long-term stability and durability should have great potential in overall water-splitting applications.

Engineered micro-nano heterogeneous architectures for transition metal phosphide (TMPs) anode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) provide multifunctional active components. These components synergistically interact to address pivotal challenges of pronounced volume expansion and sluggish reaction kinetics within the electrode. Consequently, this engineering design approach significantly enhances the overall battery performance. In this study, a self-assembled approach is employed to integrate hybridized NiFe-PBA nanocubes with two-dimensional (2D) monolayer MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ), producing a heterostructured NiFeP/C@Ti 3 C 2 T x composite. In this meticulously engineered architecture, the interface between the outer MXene layer and NiFeP embedded within the carbon matrix exhibits several distinct superiorities, such as rapid interfacial ion migration, multidirectional migration pathways, and strong spatial adaptability. The resulting non-uniform phase structure effectively mitigates electrode expansion and enhances electronic conductivity. Consequently, the NiFeP/C@Ti 3 C 2 T x -15 composite demonstrates distinct performance advantages over NiFeP/C without MXene. The composite achieves a specific capacity of 689.4 mAh g⁻¹ at 200 mA g⁻¹ over 300 cycles, double that of NiFeP/C. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations validate the electronic conductivity facilitated by the heterointerface between MXene and NiFeP, substantiating the strategic significance of the heterostructure in advancing high-performance anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

The development of high-efficiency and economical bifunctional electrocatalysts in hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) plays a key role in overall water splitting. In this study, a success was achieved in synthesizing the hollow nanospheres with amorphous nickel-iron phosphorusoxides nanoflakes layer grown on Ni-Fe foam (NiFe-PO x /NFF). Firstly, with the assistance of oxygen bubbles templates, the hollow spheres comprised of NiFe-OH nanosheets were produced through the in-situ chemical oxidation of NFF surface. After phosphorylation, crystalline NiFe-OH nanosheets were transformed into amorphous NiFe-PO x with plenty of defects and disorders, thus improving the density of active sites. The catalytic performance of NiFe-PO x /NFF was further improved by a combination of stable 3D hierarchical nanostructure, effective mass transport and charge transfer, as well as the electrochemical specific surface area expanded by fluffy featherlike nanoflakes. The self-supported electrode of NiFe-PO x /NFF exhibited outstanding catalytic property in the presence of alkaline electrolyte, including a small overpotential of 110 and 247 mV required to achieve 50 mA cm −2 for HER and OER in 1.0 M KOH aqueous solution, respectively. As a bifunctional electrocatalyst, NiFe-PO x /NFF could provide a low cell voltage of 1.52 V to reach 20 mV cm −2 under a two-electrode system as required for the occurrence of overall water electrolysis under alkaline medium, while showing extended durability under continuous electrolysis without degradation.
