The intensification of electromagnetic pollution has boosted the exploration of high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. Herein, 2D MXene, 1D nickel (Ni) chain and PDMS were anchored on 3D porous skeleton of melamine sponge (MS) by a simple, inexpensive and scalable “dipping and coating” method, and a lightweight 3D hybrid nanostructure (MXene-Ni-PDMS/MS) was prepared. Super hydrophobic, high electric conductivity, excellent EMI shielding and outstanding super-elastic performances were obtained via the synergy effect of conductive 2D MXene and 1D Ni chain and hydrophobic PDMS. The results showed that the EMI of MXene-Ni-PDMS/MS with thickness of 10 mm could reach about 50 dB, which was 50 % higher than 25 dB of sponge with thickness of 2 mm, and could meet 20 dB commercial application. Moreover, the hybrid sponge exhibited super-elastic characteristics and could recover to its original state under 60 % strain during compressive fatigue. Even when it was subjected to 500 cycles at 40 % strain, the maximum compressive stress, Young's modulus and energy loss coefficient slightly decreased, indicating that the structure could maintain stable physical properties. The water contact angle could reach 145.1°, showing hydrophobic characteristics. This work offers a novel way for synthesis of excellent EMI shielding materials based on sponge.

Phase change materials (PCMs) are ideal for thermal management in miniaturized and integrated electronic devices. However, developing PCMs with efficient thermal management and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding has remained a challenge to keep up with the rapid evolution of precision electronics. Herein, melamine foam (MF) was used as a template to build a continuous thermal/conductive network by dip-coating magnetized nickel (Ni)/MXene (NiM), and then, polyethylene glycol (PEG) was encapsulated into porous NiM/MF hybrid sponge via vacuum impregnation method. With the synergistic effect of magnetic Ni chain and highly conductive MXene, the obtained NiM/PCM achieve suitable thermal conductivity (0.39 W/mk), high electrical conductivity (76.3 S/m), and excellent EMI shielding effectiveness (34.6 dB). In addition, the NiM/PCM endows outstanding thermal stability, durability, and high latent heat storage capabilities. This work provides new ideas and insights for the EMI shielding and temperature protection of future microelectronic devices. Graphical abstract

To simultaneously enhance the processability, electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of composite foam for high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding application, in this work, the epoxy (EP)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/Ni-chains microcellular composite foam is prepared through strategy of combining the hierarchical structured aerogel skeleton and supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO 2 ) foaming process. Benefiting from the construction of the rGO/Ni-chains bicontinuous conductive skeleton and introduction of microcellular structure, the EP/rGO/Ni-chains microcellular foam displays a “brick-and-mortar” structure and implements the multiple dissipation mechanism of electromagnetic (EM) wave to achieve outstanding EMI shielding efficiency (EMI SE) of 41.11 dB in X-band. Moreover, the selection of liquid epoxy as matrix avoids the use of large amounts of organic solvents, ensures the well processability of composite and realizes the excellent compressive strength (27.33 MPa) of the EP/rGO/Ni-chains microcellular foam with a density of 0.88 g/cm 3 , which shows great application value as a high-performance EMI shielding material.

Lightweight and multifunctional polyvinylidene fluoride/Nickel-chains (PVDF/Ni-chains) composite foams with good mechanical property, excellent thermal insulation and outstanding electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance (SE) were prepared by a multi-step process including: (a) controllable synthesis of high-aspect-ratio Ni-chains, (b) Ni-chains introduced into PVDF matrix, (c) crystallinity tailoring of composite samples, (d) supercritical carbon dioxide foaming of the treated composites. Thermal treating and nanofiller existence effect are applied to tune the degree of crystallinity and crystal structures of semi-crystalline PVDF. Notably, with the optimized pre-treatment and foaming process, lightweight PVDF/Ni-chains composite foams with uniform closed-cell microcellular morphology were successfully developed. Thanks to the unique porous morphology, PVDF/10 wt% Ni-chains foams present decreased mass density (~1.0 g/cm 3 ), high tensile strength (~42.0 MPa), enhanced electrical conductivity (~0.01 S/m) and superior thermal insulation performance (~0.075 W/(m·K)). Furthermore, conductive-magnetic PVDF/10 wt% Ni-chains foam exhibits a high EMI shielding effectiveness of 26.8 dB and an outstanding specific shielding effectiveness (SSE) of 127.62 dB cm 2 /g, with an absorption-dominated shielding feature in X-band region. The enhanced absorption is attributed to the multiple reflections, dielectric loss, polarization loss and magnetic loss originated from the unique porous structure and condensed Ni-chains networks. This study paves a low-cost and scalable method for the design of novel, lightweight, thermal insulation and efficient EMI shielding composite foams characterized by optimized microcellular structure and conductive-magnetic Ni-chains networks with promising prospect for applications in construction, aerospace and electronics filed.

In order to develop high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials for the increasingly complex electromagnetic (EM) environment, in this work, the epoxy/functionalized reduced graphene oxide/Ni-chains microcellular foams with asymmetrical conductive structure (a-EP/f-RGO/Ni-chains microcellular foams) are prepared through a thermal compressing method and then followed by a supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO 2 ) foaming process. Benefiting from the construction of asymmetrical conductive structure which is assembled from the f-RGO-rich layer and Ni-chains-rich layer, the a-EP/f-RGO/Ni-chains microcellular foam with 5 vol% f-RGO and 5 vol% Ni-chains content exhibits better electrical conductivity of ∼10 −1 S/m and higher EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 40.82 dB in X-band compared with the homogeneous conductive structured EP/f-RGO/Ni-chains (h-EP/f-RGO/Ni-chains) microcellular foam in same filler content . In addition, the maximum difference of reflection coefficient (R) up to ∼0.5 is achieved by actively regulating the EMI shielding process from reflection-absorption to absorption-reflection-reabsorption in different directions of EM wave incidence on the foams. Moreover, the compressive strength of microcellular foam is up to 24.58 MPa. Combined with excellent EMI shielding property and outstanding compressive property, the a-EP/f-RGO/Ni-chains microcellular foams prepared in this work display significant application advantages as high-performance EMI shielding materials.

Developing composite carbon foams with multiple loss mechanisms and achieving stable and efficient electromagnetic wave absorption performance in harsh environments remain challenges. In this study, aqueous dispersions containing Ni2+ cellulose nanofiber (CNF) and Ti3C2Tx MXene were used to stabilize a styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) cyclohexane solution in the oil phase to form a Pickering emulsion gel. This gel was combined with freeze-drying and thermal annealing processes to synthesize nickel nanowires (Ni NWs) in situ within a three-dimensional pore structure at elevated temperatures, resulting in the production of C–CNF/MXene/Ni NW composite carbon foams. In this process, carbonized CNF and SBS function as three-dimensional scaffolds, while two-dimensional MXene sheets and in situ synthesized Ni NWs are uniformly integrated to establish a conductive network with heterogeneous interfaces. The resultant composite carbon foam demonstrates stable microwave absorption properties, with the C-C1M1N3 carbon foam achieving a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −45.2 dB at 13.6 GHz when the thickness is only 3.0 mm and a wide effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 7.6 GHz at the same thickness. Additionally, the carbon foam exhibited excellent hydrophobicity and lipophilicity, indicating potential for oil–water separation applications.
