In this study, we successfully synthesized NiCo 2 O 4 supported on Ni foam (NNCOs) with different morphologies by changing the synthesis conditions. The research results of electrochemical properties show that the morphologies have a strong influence on the electrochemical properties of materials. Specifically, the nanosheet-like NNCO-1 sample exhibited an enhanced specific capacity of 503.5 C g −1 at current density of 1 A g −1 , ca. 134-350 % higher than that of NNCO-2, NNCO-4 (nanorod-like) and NNCO-3 (grass-like). All materials also show high stability with the ability to maintain 95 to 97% capacitance after 2000 discharge cycles at a current density of 2 A g −1 . We hope that, the NNCO-1 material is promising electrode material for hybrid supercapacitor.

The sodium-nickel chloride (Na-NiCl 2 ) batteries technology has been considered as one of the most promising candidates for large-scale electrical energy storage application owing to its abundant electrode material resource, high energy density and safety. However, ultra-excessive Ni in the cathode leads to high material cost and the growth of cathode particles during cycles makes degradation of batteries performances, which hinder the further application of Na-NiCl 2 batteries. To address these challenges, we designed a free-standing Ni-less cathode with Ni/NaCl particles uniformly distributed in the three-dimensional (3D) conductive matrix constructed by carbonfiber (CF) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The 3D hierarchical structure synthesized by low-cost vacuum filtration method can offer sufficient void space to accommodate the growth of NaCl particles and effectively enhance the electronic conductivity of the cathode. When the molar ratio of Ni/NaCl in the cathode is reduced to 1.0, a specific capacity of 90 mAh g −1 for planar Na-NiCl 2 batteries can be achieved after 170 cycles at 190 °C with a capacity retention of 67%, which is higher than that of traditional tubular Na-NiCl 2 batteries.

Co-Incorporated NiV2O6/Ni(HCO3)2 arrays with different morphologies can grow on nickel foam (NF) via a mild one-step hydrothermal method. Among them, S-0.5-20 and S-0.25-20 were obtained at a 1 : 1 : 20 molar ratio of Co/V/urea with 0.5 and 0.25 mmol Co(NO3)2, respectively. They demonstrate high areal capacities of 0.99 mA h cm−2 (7.94 F cm−2) and 0.56 mA h cm−2 (4.48 F cm−2) at 1 mA cm−2, respectively, which are superior to that of Co-incorporated Ni(HCO3)2/NF synthesized in the absence of Na3VO4. S-0.25-20 possesses good rate capability with 82.1% retention when the current density is increased 20-fold, and it shows superior long-term durability with 106.2% retention of the initial capacity after 10 000 charging/discharging cycles at 100 mA cm−2. These results are associated with the porous and orderly hierarchical Co-incorporated NiV2O6/Ni(HCO3)2 nanoflake arrays directly grown on the Ni foam. Moreover, due to the synergetic effect of the individual components, electrons can be transferred from V centers to Ni active sites, thus improving the stability of the vanadate. The generation of more active species, such as Co3+, during cycling could account for the increased capacity. A S-0.25-10//activated carbon (AC) asymmetrical supercapacitor shows a high energy density of 0.533 mW h cm−2 at a power density of 0.232 mW cm−2 (0.415 mW h cm−2 at 4.983 mW cm−2). Furthermore, the formation mechanism of the Co-incorporated NiV2O6/Ni(HCO3)2 nanoflake arrays is proposed.

Nickel–Cobalt hydroxide microspheres are electrodepositioned on the films of NiCo 2 O 4 nanowires grown on the current collector through a facile approach and the hierarchical structures are then investigated as an electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors . Owing to the superior electrical conductivity of NiCo 2 O 4 nanowires, the porous structure of the (Ni–Co)(OH) 2 microspheres and the synergic effect of the multi-components, the electrode can deliver a high areal capacitance of 6 F cm −2 and a corresponding specific capacitance of 1132 F g −1 at a current density of 2 mA cm −2 , as well as a good rate capability (61.8% capacitance retention from 2 mA cm −2 to 50 mA cm −2 ), and excellent cycling stability (90% capacitance retention after 2000 cycles). The results suggest that our research opens up the possibility for the fabrication of high-performance energy-storage devices of binder-free electrodes.

The development of environmentally friendly, high-efficiency, stable, earth-abundant and non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts with fast kinetics and low overpotential for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of exceeding significance but still challenging. Herein, a bifunctional electrode of unique hierarchical NiFe-LDH/Ni/NiCo2S4/NF (NiFe-LDH = nickel–iron layered double hydroxide and NF = nickel foam) electrocatalytic architecture, which is built up from NiFe-LDH nanosheets, Ni nanoparticles and NiCo2S4 nanoneedles sequentially arrayed on a porous NF substrate, has been prepared by a facile hydrothermal and electrodeposition method. This electrocatalytic architecture is binder-free and its outer NiFe-LDH nanosheets can effectively prevent the oxidation of inner Ni nanoparticles and corrosion of NiCo2S4 nanoneedles during water electrolysis. The integration of effective HER Ni nanoparticles into OER NiFe-LDH and NiCo2S4 electrocatalysts can not only overcome the disadvantage of their poor electrical conductivity, but also greatly improve their HER and OER activities, owing to the unique hierarchical heterostructure and multicomponent synergies among Ni, NiFe-LDH, and NiCo2S4. Consequently, this electrode shows better OER performance with ultra-low overpotential of 192 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of only 37 mV dec−1 and high stability in comparison with commercial RuO2, and also exhibits excellent HER activity with a low overpotential of 83 mV at 10 mA cm−2. More importantly, the NiFe-LDH/Ni/NiCo2S4/NF composite serves as anode and cathode for overall water splitting, and it requires a low cell potential of only 1.53 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2, which evidently exceeds that of the standard Pt–C/NF//RuO2/NF cell of 1.61 V. This work provides a feasible strategy to prepare high-efficiency, low-cost and non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

The intrinsic performance of an electrocatalyst can be reinforced by constructing appropriate epitaxial interfaces, where the modulated electronic states and adsorption/desorption behaviors are conductive to enhancing electrocatalytic activity. Herein, nickel-nickelous hydroxide epitaxial interface supported on nickel foam (Ni-Ni(OH) 2 /NF) with epitaxial growth of nickel nanoparticles on the surface of nickelous hydroxide nanoribbons is devised for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Notably, the Ni-Ni(OH) 2 /NF reveals excellent electrocatalytic activity of alkaline HER (158 mV @ 100 mA cm −2 ), along with robust stability (90 % activity retention after 150 h continuous test at 200 mA cm −2 ). Theoretical simulations disclose the tuned interface electronic structure and accelerated water dissociation around the epitaxial nickel-nickelous hydroxide interface result in efficient electrochemical activity toward alkaline hydrogen evolution.

Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is an efficient and promising approach to upgrade lignin-derived phenolic compounds for the production of high-quality liquid fuels. In this work, a readily obtained Ni-Ni 3 P/ZrP catalyst featuring synergistic catalytic sites of Ni-Ni 3 P and Lewis-Brønsted acid was provided for promoting the HDO performance of lignin-derived phenolic compounds. By regulating the ratio of Zr to P (Zr/P), the catalytic activity of Ni/ZrP was significantly modified. With the optimized catalyst of Ni-Ni 3 P/ZrP-0.75, guaiacol is completely converted into cyclohexane at a low temperature of 240 °C. Further investigation shows that the synergistic effect of Ni and Ni 3 P, deriving from that Ni acts as metal site to activate hydrogen and Ni 3 P serves as Lewis acid site to adsorb guaiacol substrate, promotes the hydrogenation procedure significantly. Moreover, ZrP support as Lewis acid also demonstrates a synergistic interaction with Brønsted acid site that derives from the P-OH group. The coordination of Lewis-Brønsted acid site significantly improves the deoxygenation procedure. The strong interaction between Ni species and ZrP support accelerates the sequential occurrence of hydrogenation and deoxygenation procedures, thus improving the HDO efficiency. The Ni-Ni 3 P/ZrP-0.75 can be reused at least six runs without significant activity loss. Moreover, this Ni-Ni 3 P/ZrP-0.75 is efficient on the upgrading of realistic lignin-oil, with the hydrocarbon content increase from 13.4 % to 93.8 %. Therefore, this work provides a valuable reference for the rational design of bifunctional catalysts in the HDO reactions.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water electrolysis. This study synthesizes a nickel-based MOF on a nickel foam substrate (NiMOF/NF) via a solvothermal method and fabricates NiMOF-FeOOH/NF composites through Fe electrodeposition. The NiMOF-FeOOH 600 /NF composite, prepared with a 600 s electrodeposition time, exhibits an overpotential of 320 mV at 20 mA·cm -2 and a Tafel slope of 126 mV·dec -1 . Compared to unmodified NiMOF/NF, the overpotential was reduced by 320 mV and the Tafel slope by 146 mV dec -1 . In addition, no significant performance degradation was observed during the 40 h stability test. Further results demonstrated that deposition of Fe ions significantly improved the intrinsic conductivity of NiMOF/NF, enabling more efficient charge transfer during the OER process. Additionally, the modified FeOOH surface morphology increased the number of accessible active sites and enhanced the exposure of catalytic centers. In summary, these structural and electronic modifications synergistically improve the overall catalytic performance and have guiding significance for the application of MOF to OER.

High-nickel layered oxides are promising cathode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries due to their high energy density, but their structural instability at high voltages remains a critical challenge. This study investigates how Ni migration influences phase segregation, Li/Ni antisite defect accumulation, and mechanical degradation in LiNiO2 (LNO) through a combination of synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results reveal that at high voltages, Ni migrates into tetrahedral sites, leading to the formation of coexisting R3̅m phases with distinct lattice behaviors. This phase segregation induces inhomogeneous lithium distribution, internal stress, and strain accumulation, ultimately promoting microcrack formation and accelerating structural degradation. While Ni migration is partially reversible upon discharge, continuous cycling leads to the progressive accumulation of Li/Ni antisite defects, which disrupt Li-ion transport and further destabilize the structure. The findings describe the role of bulk Ni migration in phase segregation, linking atomic-scale lattice distortions to long-term performance limitations in high-Ni cathodes. These insights suggest strategies such as selective doping to mitigate Ni migration and improve the structural stability.

Efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are critical for various energy conversion devices such as metal-air batteries, rechargeable fuel cell, and water splitting for hydrogen production. In this work, a novel non-precious-metal OER catalyst was prepared from the pyrolysis of a Ni-Schiff base complex with thiourea. The derived catalyst is composed of nickel oxide coupled with nickel sulfide loaded on nitrogen-doped carbon matrix (NiO-NiS/N-C), which manifested excellent OER electrocatalytic activity, and an onset potential of 1.54 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode was achieved in alkaline electrolyte. The high performance of as-obtained electrocatalyst was illustrated by fully dispersed active components of NiO coupled with NiS nanoparticles, as well as the strong interaction between NiS, NiO particles, and N-doped carbon substrate. Our findings supply an easier path to fabricate the active catalyst through one-step metal organic framework transformation way and are promising for use in energy conversion systems and also yield new impetus for exploring other non-noble metal catalysts.

Electrochemical water splitting in an alkaline electrolyte for large-scale hydrogen production is currently a hot research topic. However, developing high-performance and durable oxygen-evolving electrocatalysts is an ongoing challenge. In this work we prepared Ni-phytate thin films with a bubble-like structure on Ni-foam through an in situ growth process. The resulting material can be used as an oxygen-evolving electrode in basic media without requiring the use of a conductive binder. The Ni-phytate electrode has high catalytic activity ( η j = 10 mA cm − 2 = 280 mV) and good stability (the current activity remained 95% after 5 h) towards OER. This is an effective approach to simplifying the large-scale preparation of catalysts for water-splitting applications.

In this work, Ni(II) was used as peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for decomplexation of Ni(II)-citrate, and subsequently applied for the decomplexation of chelated nickel in the electroless nickel plating wastewater. Effect of the co-existed substances (HCO 3 − , HPO 3 2− , H 2 PO 2 − , and P 2 O 7 4− ) on the decomplexation of Ni(II)-citrate were evaluated. Interestingly, except for H 2 PO 2 − , the presence of HCO 3 − , HPO 3 2− , and P 2 O 7 4− enhanced the decomplexation efficiency of Ni(II)-citrate via promoting the decomposition of PMS. Based on the radical quenching experiments and electron spinning resonance (ESR) spectra analysis, OH, SO 4 ‐ , and 1 O 2 were the primary reactive species involved in the decomplexation reaction process. Furthermore, after the decomplexation of the electroless nickel plating wastewater by PMS, the recovery of nickel was successfully achieved via adsorption coupled with electrodeposition , and 93.1% nickel recovery could be accomplished with initial Ni(II) eluent concentration of 32.5 g/L. Therefore, this study provides a green and promising approach for the application of advanced oxidation processes based on PMS activation, and has the potential to convert recoverable resources into value-added products from electroplating wastewater.
