Long-chain polyesters were prepared by melt polymerization using tetradecanedioic acid (TA) and aliphatic diols containing C2-10 as raw materials. The materials were characterised using a range of analytical techniques, including tensile testing, rheological testing, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). An investigation was conducted to ascertain the impact of diol chain length on a number of characteristics, including mechanical properties, crystalline structures, chemical composition, thermal stability, and thermal transition properties. All polyesters had high weight-average molecular weights (> 57000 g/mol). In addition, the crystallization temperature and melting temperature were affected by the chain length of diols. Poly(ethylene tetradecanedioate) (PETd) had a higher crystallization temperature (69.1 °C) and melting temperature (89.0 °C) compared to the other four polyesters, which may be due to its short-chain structure and the kink structures. All polyesters have the same crystal structure like polyethylene. In addition, poly(ethylene tetradecanedioate) (PETd), poly(butylene tetradecanedioate) (PBTd), and poly(octenyl tetradecanedioate) (POTd) exhibited polyethylene-like mechanical properties with comparable tensile strength and elongation at break. It is anticipated that bio-based polyesters will prove to be a highly promising material.

Long-chain aliphatic polyesters are potential biodegradable polymers having PE-like structure and properties. To develop biodegradable long-chain polyesters for practical applications, a series of “short-long” type long-chain polyesters, PEsxy (x = 2–4, 6, y = 10–16), are designed and synthesized from C2–4,6 short-chain α,ω-diols and C10–16 long-chain α,ω-diacids via melt polycondensation. They showed intrinsic viscosity as high as 0.93–1.64 dL/g and PE-like crystal structure, rapid crystallization, and ductile tensile behavior. Their crystallization and melting temperature showed an increasing trend with diacid chain length and a clear odd–even effect. The highest melting temperature reached 94 °C, and the highest tensile strength reached 53 MPa. Chain length-dependent biodegradability in soil and hydrolytic degradation under neutral conditions at 30–60 °C was also observed. In comparison with the widely used biodegradable poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalatae) (PBAT) copolyester, these polyesters show comparable tensile strength, ductility, and oxygen barrier performance, but obviously superior and desirable crystallizability, tensile modulus, and water vapor barrier performance.

Several aliphatic long chain polyesters with intrinsic viscosity of 0.80-1.47 dL/g were synthesized from biobased 1,5-pentanediol and long chain α,ω-diacids with 10-16 carbon atoms. Their chemical structure was characterized, and thermal, mechanical and gas barrier properties were assessed. These long chain polyesters have a melting temperature higher than poly( ε -caprolactone) and manifest polyethylene-like rapid crystallization, good thermal stability and ductile tensile behavior. Their melting temperature, crystallizablity, tensile modulus and oxygen and water vapor barrier performance all increase with increasing the chain length of diacid. In comparison with the widely used biodegradable poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) copolyester, these potentially biodegradable polyesters show comparable tensile strength, ductility and oxygen barrier performance, but obviously superior crystallizability, tensile modulus and water vapor barrier performance.

Constructing self-repairing epoxy materials based on transesterification chemistry can be regarded as a potential path for practical industrial applications given on its simplicity and ease of processing. However, there is still a challenge to improve the slow bonding exchange process for desired healing performances. Herein, this work reports a simple and effective strategy to prepare high-biomass-content self-repairing epoxy materials by introducing polyester oligomer (PEO) dicarboxylic acid as modifier into epoxidized soybean oil and itaconic acid compounds. The PEO is synthesized from glutaric anhydride and 1,4-cyclohexanediol, as well possess a unique pentamer molecular structure. It not only endows the epoxy system with improved molecular mobility in virtue of its long-chain structure, but also increases the number the essential ester groups of transesterification process, thus synergistically promoting bonding exchange rate for expected properties. As a result, the employment of PEO decreases the activation energy from 100 to 70 KJ/mol, as well as presents optimized self-repairing efficiency in storage modulus and tensile strength tests compared to the control group. It may provide a new and practical way to fabricate high-effective self-repairing epoxy system for industrial applications.
