Cu-doped Cs2AgI3 Composite Loaded Plastic Scintillators for X-ray and Thermal Neutron Detection

Wanting Gui,Lu Yao,Xunsheng Zhou,Qi Wu,Chao Li,Shi Zhang,Yunfeng Zhan,Cai Lin Wang

Ag-based metal halide scintillators have recently attracted significant interest for X-ray imaging due to their high light yield and ultra-fast decay lifetime. These properties are advantageous for thermal neutron detection, yet their application in this area have not been thoroughly explored. In this article, we investigate the properties of Cu-doped Cs 2 AgI 3 metal halide scintillators for X-ray imaging and thermal neutron detection. A simple synthesis process was employed to produce Cu-doped Cs 2 AgI 3 scintillators. The as-prepared Cu-doped Cs 2 AgI 3 exhibited intense green emission with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 55 ± 2.7%. Cu-doped Cs 2 AgI 3 /PVDF plastic scintillation screen has been prepared and achieved a resolution of 5 lp/mm under X-ray radiation. A composite consisting of 6 LiF, Cu-doped Cs 2 AgI 3 , and Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was utilized for thermal neutron detection, achieving a light yield of about 12,526±9 photons/thermal neutron, which is almost twice that of a commercial 6 Li-glass (GS20) scintillator (7000 photons/thermal neutron). Effective neutron-gamma pulse discrimination was achieved using a network dynamics digital filter, effectively separating thermal neutron events from gamma events.

Ce3+-doped alkaline-earth sulfide nanocrystals for X-ray scintillation imaging screens

Yuying Liu,Kai Han,Shihao Zhao,Xinquan Zhou,Song Gao,Yexin Wang,Zhiguo Xia,Shangda Jiang

Rare-earth Ce3+-doped scintillators are attracting considerable attention for X-ray detection. However, large-area and fast scintillation screens using monodispersed scintillator nanocrystals (NCs) remain a challenge in X-ray imaging. Herein, we fabricated Ce3+-doped alkaline-earth metal sulfide NCs by a high-temperature co-precipitation method. The as-prepared SrS:Ce3+ and CaS:Ce3+ NCs show a bright blue-green emission originating from the d–f transition of Ce3+, and the NCs exhibit good X-ray scintillation performance with a detection limit as low as 0.66 μGyair s−1 and excellent anti-irradiation stability. We further successfully fabricated a homogeneous hybrid scintillation film by embedding scintillator NCs in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and demonstrated the imaging effect of the film as an X-ray screen. This work highlights the potential of Ce3+-doped scintillator NCs for efficient X-ray detection.

Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Zirconium-Based Perovskites for Large-Area and Ultraflexible X-ray Scintillator Screens

Fei Zhang,Yingchun Zhou,Zhipeng Chen,Meng Wang,Zhuangzhuang Ma,Xu Chen,Mochen Jia,Di Wu,Jiawen Xiao,Xinjian Li,Yu Zhang,Zhifeng Shi,Chongxin Shan

Flexible scintillator screens with environmental stability, high sensitivity, and low cost have emerged as candidates for X-ray imaging applications. Here, a large-scale and cost-efficient solution synthesis of the vacancy-ordered double perovskite Cs 2 ZrCl 6 , which is characterized by thermal activation delayed fluorescence (TADF) dominated by triplet emission under X-ray irradiation, is demonstrated. The large Stokes shift and efficient luminescence collection of TADF effectively ensure the light outcoupling efficiency. Further, flexible X-ray scintillator screens with an area of 400 cm 2 are prepared using poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) as the carrier, exhibiting excellent scintillation properties with light yields as high as 49 400 photons MeV −1 , spatial resolutions up to 18 lp mm −1 and detection limits as low as 65 nGy s −1 . Finally, the high-quality imaging results of non-planar and dynamic objects by such screens are demonstrated. It is believed that the explored Cs 2 ZrCl 6 @PDMS flexible scintillator screens would offer a big step toward expanding the application range of scintillators in different environments.

A novel scintillation screen for achieving high-energy ray detection with fast and full-color emission

Heng Yang,Huihui Li,Rui Yuan,Junfeng Chen,Jingtai Zhao,Sheng Wang,Yufeng Liu,Qianli Li,Zhijun Zhang

Traditional inorganic scintillation crystals have a high stopping power to high-energy particles or rays; however, their wide applications are limited due to the fixed emission band. CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) perovskite nanocrystals (CsPbX3 NCs) have been proved to achieve full-color emission and effective X-ray detection, but failed to detect γ-rays effectively due to their weak absorption ability. Therefore, based on the advantages of the tunable spectra for CsPbX3 NCs and the high stopping ability of a BaF2 single crystal, a novel CsPbX3 NCs@BaF2 scintillation screen is developed ingeniously for realizing fast and full-color emission under high-energy ray excitation. The CsPbX3 NCs@BaF2 scintillation screen exhibits a tunable emission ranging from 435 to 648 nm under hard X-ray excitation. It is of note that the light yield of the CsPbBr3 NCs@BaF2 scintillation screen can reach up to 6300 photons per MeV and it shows a fast decay time component (∼11 ns) under γ-ray excitation. The purpose of this contribution is to provide a new solution for guiding the perovskite materials as potential scintillators for fast and full-color emission expanding the application of high-energy radiation detection.

In Situ Crystallization of Copper(I)-Based Hybrid Halides Assisted by Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium for a Large-Area Scintillation Imaging Screen

Baoling Tang,Jiance Jin,Kai Han,Tianrui Li,Haoran Zhang,Xuejie Zhang,Maxim Molokeev,Yuzhen Wang,Zhiguo Xia,Bingfu Lei

Exploring new types of scintillators, especially fabricating large-area scintillating screens, is essential in applications of life science, industry, and material science. However, the thickness and light scattering in composite scintillator film present a major challenge for balancing the spatial resolution and radioluminescence intensity. Herein, an in situ crystallization route is developed to innovate the preparation of the large-area scintillating screens based on the hybrid copper(I)-based C 6 H 8 N 2 OCuX (X = I and Br), in which carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC-Na) contribute to the “CMC-Na membrane” film formation and further increase absorption cross-section for X-ray radiation owing to the existence of Na elements. The choice of halogen can regulate the photoluminescence of C 6 H 8 N 2 OCuX (X = I, Br, and Cl) from cyan to green and then to yellow, and significant scintillation property can be achieved for C 6 H 8 N 2 OCuI with the light yield of 52 000 photons MeV −1 and detection limit of 43.14 nGy s −1 . Finally, the high X-ray absorption assisted by CMC-Na, as well as the thin thickness of the composite scintillator films help to realize remarkable spatial resolution above 14 lp mm −1 . This study provides a foundation for discovering high-performance copper(I)-based halides scintillators and offers a creative think film preparation method for X-ray imaging.

A transparent hybrid metal halide glassy scintillation screen for high-resolution fast neutron radiography

Zhou Zi’an,Zheng Jinxiao,Ruan Shihao,Yue Guichu,Feng Tiao,An Yini,Wu Meimei,Wang Nü,Zhou Shuyun,He Linfeng,Sun Chenghua

Fast neutron radiography offers exceptional penetration for high-density and bulky objects, yet its resolution is hindered by light scattering in conventional scintillators and screen fabrication techniques. To address this, here, we develop a transparent glassy Mn-based hybrid metal halide scintillation screen, (BTPP) 1.8 (HTPP) 0.2 MnBr 4 (BTPP + = butyltriphenylphosphonium, HTPP + = heptyltriphenylphosphonium), leveraging temperature-dependent ordered-disordered transitions. The large-area screen boasts >70% visible light transmittance (500–800 nm), a high photoluminescence quantum yield (~85.54%), and threefold higher light output than commercial ZnS (Ag): PP screens. With a spatial resolution of 5 lp mm −1 , it surpasses existing scintillators. This hybrid material enables imaging of heavy objects with clear hierarchical details, providing accurate data for non-destructive detection while offering an alternative approach to scintillator design, advancing the potential of fast neutron radiography.

Surfactant-Assisted Synthesis of Hybrid Copper(I) Halide Nanocrystals for X-ray Scintillation Imaging

Ranran Gu,Kai Han,Jiance Jin,Hao Zhang,Zhiguo Xia

Processing luminescent metal halide microcrystals into counterpart nanocrystals (NCs) can rationally enhance the resolution in X-ray scintillation imaging. It remains a challenge for the controlled synthesis of the hybrid NC luminescence materials, which is important for the fabrication of the organic films. Herein, we design the synthesis of copper(I)-based halide Cu6I8(bu-ted)2 (Cu6I8C20H42N4) (bu-ted: 1-butyl-1,4-diazabicyclo [2.2.2] octan-1-ium) NCs via a surfactant-assisted method utilizing surface tension to limit the crystal size. Cu6I8(bu-ted)2 NCs with prominent near-to-unity photoluminescence quantum yield results in ultrahigh light output that is calculated to be 480% of a commercial Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+ scintillator with a low detection limit of 32 nGy/s. X-ray imaging with a spatial resolution of 17 lp mm–1 is demonstrated based on the fabrication of large-area Cu6I8(bu-ted)2 composite scintillation screens. This study provides a foundation method to nanocrystallize the copper(I)-based hybrid halide scintillators for prominent X-ray imaging.

Organic–Inorganic Hybrid Mn-Based Transparent Glass for Curved X-Ray Scintillation Imaging

Zhi-Zhong Zhang,Zi-Lin He,Jian-Bin Luo,Jun-Hua Wei,Xiu-Xian Guo,Jing-Hua Chen,Dai-Bin Kuang

The current mainstream planar X-ray imaging techniques face significant challenges for accurately capturing the internal structure of curved objects, since the variable distances between the curved objects and the flat-panel scintillation screen cannot eliminate the distortion in X-ray imaging. Though large-area and transparent curved scintillation screens are much more desirable. Here, organic–inorganic hybrid Mn-based single crystals ([CH 3 Ph 3 P] 2 MnX 4 , X = Cl, Br, I) exhibiting high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and low melting temperature have been employed to prepare transparent glass for X-ray scintillation imaging application through a low-temperature melting strategy. The [CH 3 Ph 3 P] 2 MnBr 4 -glass shows high PLQY (47.8%), high-resolution X-ray imaging performance (12.3 lp mm −1 ), low limit of detection (25.33 nGy s −1 ), and impressive X-ray irradiation stability (102 Gy). Furthermore, high-contrast X-ray imaging at a low dose (6.865 µGy per exposure, 14.5 times lower than the chest radiograph) is achieved. Based on the low glass transition temperature ( T g = 53.6 °C) and easy-shapeable properties of [CH 3 Ph 3 P] 2 MnBr 4 -glass scintillator, the large-area curved scintillation screen with a series of sizes of Φ 2×4 – Φ 8×4 cm 2 can be easily fabricated and show high X-ray imaging quality. These findings provide a paradigm for future research in shapeable X-ray scintillators, unlocking new possibilities for curved and 3D X-ray imaging.

Template-Assisted Fabrication of Flexible Perovskite Scintillators for X-Ray Detection and Imaging

Yuwei Li,Yalun Xu,Yujie Yang,Zhenglin Jia,Haitao Tang,Jay B. Patel,Qianqian Lin

Metal halide perovskites have recently emerged as exceptional scintillator materials for ionizing radiation detection devices. Their chemical composition consists of elements with high atomic numbers, leading them to have a high attenuation coefficient. Their high attenuation coefficient, in combination with their excellent optoelectronic properties, versatile chemical tunability, and facile and low-cost fabrication processes, makes them the ideal scintillator material. However, existing perovskite-based scintillators suffer from poor material stability, especially in humid atmospheres. Moreover, current perovskite films have morphologies that have been optimized for photovoltaics, which results in the relatively long charge carrier lifetimes, a property that is detrimental for fast scintillation. Furthermore, existing reports of perovskite-based scintillators have shown limited spatial resolution due to poor light transmittance that arises from light scattering from large aggregates of perovskite grains. To address these issues, this work introduces a template-assisted in situ polymerization-based process to prepare perovskite/polymer composite scintillators that simultaneously reduces afterglow effects, improves perovskite stability, and is industrially scalable. The optimized perovskite scintillators are then incorporated into X-ray detection devices to investigate detection performance and device stability. Compared with existing commercial scintillators, the perovskite scintillators show superior detection performance metrics for imaging, indicating the great potential of perovskites for next-generation, large-area, and flexible scintillation screens.
