Nucleotide-Tackified Degradable and Closed-Loop Recyclable Underwater Adhesive

Mingsong Huang,Lingyu Liu,Wei Guo,Liying Cui,Guanghui Gao,Qin Zhang,Xin Liu

Sustainable underwater adhesives have drawn much interest in promising applications and environmental engineering. However, developing a convenient strategy to combine recyclability and underwater adhesion into adhesive materials remains a formidable challenge. In this work, a degradable and closed-loop recyclable underwater adhesive tackifier is designed by nucleotide, via the ring-opening polymerization of thioctic acid in the presence of 5′-adenosine monophosphate and methacrylatoethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride. The nucleotide-tackified adhesives present an excellent underwater adhesion for various materials, tissues, and on-demand detachment adhesion behavior. The underwater adhesives demonstrate reusability, degradability, and closed-loop recyclability of dual monomers of thioctic acid and 5′-adenosine monophosphate. Interestingly, the waste residues of the underwater adhesives demonstrate processability and can be employed again in the construction of tough adhesive interfaces in both air and underwater, with further expanding sustainability. It is envisioned that the strategy of nucleotide-tackified sustainable underwater adhesives would offer promising insights for advancing sustainable and recyclable adhesive materials.

In Situ Enhancive and Closed-Loop Chemical Recyclable High-Performance Aromatic Polyamides from Lignin-Derived Ferulic Acid

Yanlin Liu,Wanding Chen,Zhen Yu,Yajin Fang,Xiangyu Zhou,Yi Wang,Zhaobin Tang

The resource and environmental issues caused by discarded plastics make plastic recycling research increasingly urgent. Polyamide, one of the top five general engineering polymers, has yet to be thoroughly explored for its recycling performance or mechanism, particularly for aromatic polyamides. In this study, ferulic acid, a lignin derivative generated from bio sources, was used to synthesize diacids and photoresponsive aromatic polyamides that could be recycled via dual processes and had outstanding thermal and mechanical properties. On the one hand, UV-induced cycloaddition reactions occurred in photoresponsive groups, allowing polyamides to achieve the performance enhancement of the discarded materials by UV enhancement. The hydrolysis of amide bonds under alkaline circumstances, on the other hand, conferred degradability on ferulic acid-based polyamides. In addition, a simple acidification and filtration approach for extracting beginning monomers from degradation solutions was developed, resulting in closed-loop chemical recycling of ferulic acid-based polyamides. This work enriches the raw material library for the preparation of high-performance biobased polyamides and provides new ideas for the development of recyclable polyamides.

Synthesis and Chemical Recovery of Castor Oil-Based Poly(ester amides) with PE-Like Performance

Cheng Liu,Yongliang Ding,Lieshun Cai,Mang Wu,Zhongkai Wang

Biobased closed-loop recyclable olefin-like materials are environmentally friendly and have promising application prospects. However, such materials are scarce, and especially the olefin-like materials developed so far are limited to polyester materials. Therefore, developing nonpolyester biobased olefin-like materials is of significant interest. In this study, a castor oil-based poly(ester amide) (PEA) with polyethylene-like properties and closed-loop recyclability was successfully prepared. The obtained PEA materials exhibit thermal and mechanical properties comparable to polyethylene and surpass those of previously reported linear poly(ester amide)s. Notably, PEA can be completely hydrolyzed to its precursors, N1,N10-bis(3-hydroxypropyl) decanediamide (DSE) and sebacic acid (SA), with yields of 73.1–75.8 and 92.8–96.2%, respectively. Further experiments demonstrated that repolymerization of recovered DSE and SA produced REPEA materials with mechanical properties equivalent to the original polymer. This study achieves closed-loop recycling for biobased linear nonpolyester materials, which offers a novel approach to design olefin-like sustainable materials.

Facile preparation of reprocessable and degradable phenolic resin based on dynamic acetal motifs

Juxiang Chen,Ke Zhang,Kuiyuan Zhang,Bo Jiang,Yudong Huang

Phenolic resins with irreversible cross-links structure make them difficult to degrade and recycle. It is an emerging trend for phenolic resins thermoset to develop a rapid and facile closed-loop recycling approach. Herein, the degradable and reprocessable phenolic thermosets (PRTs) based on reversible acetal bonds were synthesized by tri(ethylene glycol) divinyl ether (TEGDVE) and linear phenolic resin through one-step “click” addition reaction. By employing the chain mobility induced by dynamic weak acetal motifs and linear TEGDVE in PRTs, the mechanical strengths could be rationally adjusted, and more moderate reprocessing and degradation conditions were achieved. Accordingly, the flexible structure units containing weak reversible acetal linkages were expected to accelerate the mobility of the chain segments and decrease the reprocessing temperature, while the linear phenolic structure afforded the high mechanical strength. Remarkedly, a champion degradation rate of 121.8 mg·mL −1 ·h −1 was achieved under acid condition by adjusting the ratio of flexible chains consisting of dynamic acetal bonds. In addition, compared with pristine PRTs, regenerative one maintained 93.41% of elongation at break. This work may shed a light for realizing degradable and reprocessable dynamic network materials with high efficiency.

Catalyst-free curing and closed-loop recycling of carboxylated functionalized rubber by a green crosslinking strategy

Haoran Feng,Chenru Tian,Ganggang Zhang,Liqun Zhang

Current adopted rubber curing methods undergo large amounts of environmental issues, such as the release of toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during curing process and difficulties in recycling of end-of-life rubbers. Many new curing reactions and cross-linking structures have been developed to solve these problems. A green curing strategy based on epoxy-acid reactions and ester linkages could be a potential alternative to the current curing ones. However, the curing reactions between epoxy and carboxyl groups generally require a catalysis to improve curing rate, and the recycling process requires toxic organic solution or high temperature. It is of great desired to develop a real environmentally friendly crosslinking strategy for rubber materials. In this paper, we report a facile and high-efficiency green crosslinking strategy for the carboxyl-functionalized rubber. N,N,N′,N'-tetraglycidyl-4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM) was selected as a multifunctional amine-type high-efficiency crosslinker for carboxylated nitrile rubber (XNBR). TGDDM-cured XNBR exhibit extremely fast crosslinking rate and high crosslinking efficiency due to the four epoxy terminated units and tertiary amine structure acting as an internal catalyst. Besides, the mechanical properties and crosslinking density of TGDDM-cured XNBR can be regulated by TGDDM content. Furthermore, the ester linkage formed by curing reaction could be selectively and efficiently cleaved in a mixed solution of ethanol and water under mild condition. The closed-loop recovered XNBR maintains chemical structure and molecular weight and exhibit good mechanical performance. This strategy offers a promising way for high-efficient crosslinking of diene rubber as well as a real cost-effective and environmentally friendly recovery of end-of-life rubber materials.

Controlled synthesis and closed-loop chemical recycling of biodegradable copolymers with composition-dependent properties

Yan Yi-Teng,Wu Gang,Chen Si-Chong,Wang Yu-Zhong

The closed-loop recycling concept of the polymer wastes into building-block chemicals is attractive, but the closed-loop recycling of copolymers enabled by energy-efficient chemical recycling and cost-effective separations is still facing great challenges. Herein, for the first time, a one-pot sequential copolymerization of γ -butyrolactone ( γ -BL) and p -dioxanone (PDO) using an economical ureas/alkoxides catalytic system is conducted to synthesize biodegradable and chemically recyclable poly-( γ -butyrolactone)-block-poly( p -dioxanone) (P γ BL- b -PPDO) diblock copolymers with well-defined and controlled structures. The composition-dependent properties of P γ BL- b -PPDO copolymers, including thermal properties and crystallization behavior, are investigated. The results show that the thermal stability and crystalline ability of P γ BL are enhanced observably by introducing the PPDO block. Significantly, the P γ BL- b -PPDO copolymers can be depolymerized efficiently into the corresponding co-monomers with a yield of over 95% by simply low-temperature pyrolysis under vacuum. Moreover, γ -BL and PDO monomers are selectively separated with an isolated purity of about 99% based on the difference in their physicochemical properties. Subsequently, their repolymerization is realized to obtain the copolymers with nearly identical structures and thermostability, demonstrating the closed-loop recycling of copolymers, i.e. , polymerization-depolymerization-repolymerization. This research provides important guidance for the design of novel sustainable polymers towards more efficient chemical recycling, separation and regeneration.

Tough and biodegradable C-lignin cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol supramolecular composite films with closed-looping recyclability

Tao Gui,Ling-Ping Xiao,Shuang-Lin Zou,Yue Zhang,Xu Fu,Chang-Hao Liu,Run-Cang Sun

Catechyl lignin (C-lignin) is a unique natural biopolymer that is considered to be the best alternative to conventional lignin due to its linear homogeneous molecular structure. Based on the structural properties of C-lignin, the development of a new biodegradable plastic to replace traditional petroleum-based plastics is a sustainable route. However, the maximum filling fraction of lignin is required to achieve excellent biodegradability of lignin-based bio-plastics, yet resulting in decreased mechanical strength of composites. Herein, we report a novel strategy to fabricate a closed-loopling recyclability supramolecular composite films through casting and dry molding process of intermolecular covalent-noncovalent cross-linking networks with polyvinyl alcohol by the epoxidation of C-lignin. The intermolecular cross-linking mechanism analyses reveal that the resultant bio-material not only display improved mechanical properties (maximum tensile strength of 133.5 MPa and strain at break of 690.2 %), but also show UV-resistant, antimicrobial, thermally stable, and rapid biodegradable properties. Notably, the fabricated films demonstrate the characteristics of closed-loop recyclability, which paves a new way toward rational design of bioplastics using renewable lignin. These integrated properties make the lignin-based biocomposites a promising alternative to traditional plastics.

Low-Energy and Green In-Situ Recycling of Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries Achieve Graphite Regeneration and Pre-Lithiation

Jie Chen,Ruilan Li,Yongzhi Duan,Shuaiqi Gong,Yulin Min,Hexing Li,Penghui Shi

The cyclic regeneration of non-renewable graphite anode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is crucial for battery recycling, aiming to reduce carbon footprints and minimize resource waste. Traditional methods often involve high energy use and significant environmental pollution. To tackle this, a green, closed-loop regeneration method using only oxalic acid was developed. This approach efficiently recovers precious metals from the anode and allows for in-situ regeneration of the spent anode, as well as the synthesis of pre-lithiation reagents. The findings indicate that lithium oxalate on the surface of pre-lithiated regenerated graphite compensates for active Li+ loss and acts as a pre-lithiation sacrificial salt during battery operation. It also decomposes to release carbon dioxide, preventing the formation of soluble lithium alkoxides and electrolyte ester exchange reactions, significantly enhancing battery performance without leaving impurities. This method allows effective lithium utilization from spent anodes and in-situ closed-loop regeneration. Under optimal conditions, the Li+ leaching rate reaches 97.64%. The electrochemical performance of the regenerated prelithiated graphite maintains a high specific capacity of 320.5 mAh·g−1 after 200 cycles, with a specific capacity retention rate of 90.4%. Environmental and economic assessment shows outstanding economic advantages of $3,259.22 and negligible environmental footprint for recycling each 1.0 ton of retired graphite. This work advances material recycling, reduces the environmental impact of waste batteries, and supports a low-carbon transition.

Sustainable Bioplastic Made from Biomass DNA and Ionomers

Jinpeng Han,Yanfei Guo,Hang Wang,Kunyu Zhang,Dayong Yang

Plastics play important roles in modern life and currently the development of plastic recycling is highly demanding and challenging. To relieve this dilemma, one option is to develop new sustainable bioplastics that are compatible with the environment over the whole material life cycle. We report a sustainable bioplastic made from natural DNA and biomass-derived ionomers, termed as DNA plastics. The sustainability involves all aspects of the production, use, and end-of-life options of DNA plastics: (1) the raw materials are derived from biorenewable resources; (2) the water-processable strategy is environmentally friendly, not involving high-energy consumption, the use of organic solvents, and the production of byproducts; (3) recyclable and nondestructive use is achieved to significantly prolong the service lifetime of the plastics; and (4) the disposal of waste plastics follows two green routes including the recycling of waste plastics and enzyme-triggered controllable degradation under mild conditions. Besides, DNA plastics can be “aqua-welded” to form arbitrary designed products such as a plastic cup. This work provides a solution to transform biobased hydrogel to bioplastic and demonstrates the closed-loop recycling of DNA plastics, which will advance the development of sustainable materials.

Closed-Loop Recyclable Silica-Based Nanocomposites with Multifunctional Properties and Versatile Processability

Yi Hou,Guangda Zhu,Samantha O. Catt,Yuhan Yin,Jian Xu,Eva Blasco,Ning Zhao

Most plastics originate from limited petroleum reserves and cannot be effectively recycled at the end of their life cycle, making them a significant threat to the environment and human health. Closed-loop chemical recycling, by depolymerizing plastics into monomers that can be repolymerized, offers a promising solution for recycling otherwise wasted plastics. However, most current chemically recyclable polymers may only be prepared at the gram scale, and their depolymerization typically requires harsh conditions and high energy consumption. Herein, it reports less petroleum-dependent closed-loop recyclable silica-based nanocomposites that can be prepared on a large scale and have a fully reversible polymerization/depolymerization capability at room temperature, based on catalysis of free aminopropyl groups with the assistance of diethylamine or ethylenediamine. The nanocomposites show glass-like hardness yet plastic-like light weight and toughness, exhibiting the highest specific mechanical strength superior even to common materials such as poly(methyl methacrylate), glass, and ZrO 2 ceramic, as well as demonstrating multifunctionality such as anti-fouling, low thermal conductivity, and flame retardancy. Meanwhile, these nanocomposites can be easily processed by various plastic-like scalable manufacturing methods, such as compression molding and 3D printing. These nanocomposites are expected to provide an alternative to petroleum-based plastics and contribute to a closed-loop materials economy.

Copper-supported catalysts for sustainable PET depolymerization: a cost-effective approach towards dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) production

Yitian Zhang,Jie Gao,Chao Jiang,Gang Luo,Jiajun Fan,James H. Clark,Shicheng Zhang

Chemical upgrading as a recycling technology for poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) waste plastic is an effective way to help solve the current challenges of plastic pollution. Catalytic methanolysis technology enables the depolymerization of PET into high-value dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) monomers under relatively mild conditions, thereby achieving closed-loop recycling of PET waste plastic. In this study, we compared the catalytic efficiency of Cu/SiO2 catalysts prepared by three different methods for the depolymerization of PET to DMT. Cu/SiO2-IM, prepared through the impregnation method, exhibited the highest activity, with PET conversion and DMT selectivity reaching 92.35% and 99.0%, respectively, at 200 °C without any initial gas pressure. The exceptional performance of Cu/SiO2-IM can be attributed to its small metal particles, substantial specific surface area, a high ratio of Brønsted acid sites (BAS) to Lewis acid sites (LAS) and the balance of Cu+ and Cu0 active sites on the catalytic surface. Furthermore, possible reaction mechanisms of Cu-based catalysts in the catalytic methanolysis of PET were investigated: Cu+ initiates the attack on the carbon groups along the long PET chain and enhances the nucleophilic attack during the depolymerization reaction, while Cu0 readily interacts with the hydroxyl group of methanol, leading to the formation of a new ester group between the oxygen atom in the hydroxyl group of methanol and the carbon atom in the CO group of PET polyester. This low-cost and high-efficiency catalytic methanolysis study provides a practical approach to PET waste plastic recycling.

High-strength supramolecular covalent adaptable networks with reprocessability and closed-loop recyclability

Lin Bai,Yihui Lei,Huiling Liang,Longzao Yang,Tingcheng Li,Daohong Zhang,Sufang Chen,Zejun Xu

The widespread use of and extreme difficulty in degradation of plastics have brought enormous pressure to ecosystems, and it is crucial to develop materials that can undergo chemical recycled under moderate conditions and at the same time possess mechanical properties comparable to traditional plastics. Herein, a supramolecular covalent adaptable network (sCAN-Ht) for chemically closed-loop recycling at room temperature was designed and synthesised using tris(6-(4-formyl- 2-methoxyphenoxy) hexyl)((2,4,6-trioxo-1,3,5-triazinane-1,3,5-triyl) tris(hexane-6,1- diyl)) tricarbamate (TPAU-Ht) and tris(2-dimethylaminoethyl)amine (TREN) through a Schiff-base reaction between amine and aldehyde groups. Significant modulation of the mechanical properties could be achieved by introducing different ratios of aldehyde and amino groups into the polymer. As the ratio of aldehyde to amino group increased, the tensile strength of sCAN-Ht- x initially increased and then decreased. The sCAN-Ht-2 exhibited a Young's modulus of 1221 ± 43 MPa, tensile strength of 67.5 ± 7 MPa, and an elongation at break of 101.1 ± 10 %. sCAN-Ht demonstrates the reprocessing characteristics of a thermoplastic and at the same time exhibits solvent resistance similar to that of a thermoset. It can also be recovered in a closed-loop manner under acidic conditions, with 77 % recovery of monomer and 74 % recovery of TREN, which can be used to regenerate sCAN-Ht without compromising mechanical performance. sCAN-Ht provides a favourable development direction for solving the problem of plastics degradation due to its excellent mechanical, solvent-resistant, reprocessing, and recyclable properties.
