The hydrophobic soft coating has low ice adhesion strength and hydrophobic stability in low-temperature and high-humidity environments, which is crucial for preventing ice formation on infrastructure and transportation systems. However, creating mechanically durable hydrophobic soft coatings using simple methods remains challenging. In this study, a high-hardness particle-toughened, self-stratifying organic layer with high photothermal conversion rate was developed to enhance coating durability and ice-repellent performance. By optimizing the ratio of dopamine (DA) and sodium alginate (SA), a hydrophobic photothermal agent (DPSn) with high hardness and a significant light-heat effect was synthesized. A durable, hydrophobic photothermal anti-ice coating (AR/20 %PDMS/x%DPS1) with varying DPS1 amounts was successfully created using a straightforward one-step spray method, utilizing the self-stratification characteristics of acrylic resin (AR) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), along with the toughening effect of DPSn. The fiber cross-linked structure of DPS1 achieved a photothermal conversion rate of 87.5 %. Adding 4 wt% DPS1 increased the surface temperature of the AR/20 %PDMS coating to 96.5 ± 2.4 °C and boosted the coating’s adhesion strength from 6.70 ± 0.3 MPa to 7.23 ± 0.7 MPa. The AR/20 %PDMS/4%DPS1 coating demonstrated excellent anti-/de-icing performance after 60 friction cycles, 60 icing/de-icing cycles, and 132 h of acid-base immersion. Its simple preparation process and durable ice-repellent properties make it highly suitable for practical applications in photothermal hydrophobic soft coatings.

Microsized graphene oxide (GO) is promising for the development of efficient anti-icing coatings due to its excellent anti-icing activity, remarkable photothermal property, mature industrialization and easy availability. However, the size effect of microsized GO on the performance of anti-icing coatings remains unknown. Herein, a series of microsized GO with different sizes are incorporated into a supramolecular polymeric matrix to study the GO size effect and develop the self-healable and photothermal anti-icing coatings. Results show that the increase of GO size significantly enhances the anti-icing, deicing, and photothermal performance of the coatings. With the increase of GO size, the freezing delay time is prolonged by ∼124.7%; the ice nucleation temperature and ice shear strength are reduced by ∼22.0% and ∼40.3%, respectively; and the photothermal ability is increased by ∼19.8%. The best-performing coating (LGO-SH) with the largest GO exhibits high stability/durability during 50 icing/deicing cycles and at different low temperatures. Moreover, owing to the multiple dynamic bonds in the supramolecular matrix, LGO-SH can autonomously self-heal at −20 °C and recover its original ice shear strength during 10 damage/healing cycles. Furthermore, LGO-SH achieves fast photothermal deicing due to its excellent photothermal ability. Findings in this study provide a guideline to develop efficient GO-based anti-icing coatings and build a bridge between the GO industry and anti-icing coatings.

To address the hazards posed by icing environments on flight safety, a series of anti-icing measures for aircraft have gradually developed. However, with the continuous enhancement of aircraft aerodynamic performance, especially the desire for engines and propellers to achieve higher fuel efficiency, optimization of modern aircraft anti-icing protection systems is required. Here, a method was proposed for creating a robust superhydrophobic photothermal coating with a micro-nano hierarchical structure by spraying on ice-prone areas of the aircraft, aimed at reducing the high energy consumption and cost of anti-icing systems. The superhydrophobic structure on the coating surface exhibited a static water contact angle of 159.5° and extremely low liquid adhesion, demonstrating excellent stability after mechanical wear, chemical corrosion, and ultraviolet irradiation tests. This structure allowed droplets to rebound quickly upon impact with the coating and completely detach within 11 ms, and could significantly delay the icing time of droplets on the coating surface in low-temperature environments, showing good anti-icing performance. The photothermal conversion performance of the coating ensured effective self-deicing under sunny conditions. Furthermore, icing wind tunnel tests validated the coating's anti-icing performance and photothermal effects, revealing that this coating could significantly reduce ice accumulation thickness. The results of this study provide options for achieving a low-energy, low-cost, and sustainable aircraft anti-icing protection system, conducive to the development of new anti-icing technologies.

Unwanted ice build-up is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature, which creates a series of catastrophic impacts on a wide range of human activities. Various anti/de-icing materials have been proposed for dealing with icing issues. Superhydrophobic anti/de-icing coatings have been widely reported since it has high efficiency and can be achieved in different ways. The surface functional groups have a significant influence on surface energy which is related to surface wettability. However, the influence of the coating surfaces functional groups on the anti-/de-icing properties is still not well studied. To investigate this influence, different groups with different hydrophilicity have been introduced to 3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8-Tridecafluorooctyl acrylate (TFOA) to fabricate several branch copolymer ice-phobic coatings. The anti-icing performance and the influence of group radius and interaction were studied. The acrylic acid TFOA showed a great superhydrophobic property (over 150° water contact angle), lower ice adhesion strength (<50 kPa), and lower wear depth compared with other copolymer coatings. The mechanism was studied via the molecular dynamic calculation carried out in ChemDraw software. The interaction between hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups and the steric length of the hydrophilic groups influence the surface structure and surface element distribution, further influencing the ice adhesion strength.

Undesired ice accumulation on surfaces leads to serious threats to both transportation systems and human life. Although superhydrophobic coatings have demonstrated attractive performance for icephobic applications, their use has been restricted due to their weak mechanical properties and complex preparation processes. In the present study, a facile and efficient strategy for the development of a novel super-repellent icephobic coating was demonstrated. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and cross-linked poly[hexeafluorobisphenol A-co-cyclotriphosphazene] microspheres (PHC) were prepared by a single-step precipitation polymerization without further surface modifications. The facilely fabricated coating demonstrated a high static water contact angle of ∼164° and a low sliding angle of ∼3.7°. More importantly, the coating exhibited exceptional mechanical durability against various damages, due to the synergistic effects of the micro/nanoscale surface structure and the strong and stable interaction between the PHC particles and PDMS. More remarkably, the coating showed good self-cleaning and anti-icing properties in a clammy environment (−15 ℃, relative humidity = 70%). This study offers insights into the preparation of a mechanically robust and cost-effective coating for various practical anti-icing applications.

Phase change materials (PCMs) have been used for energy storage within a wide range of applications. However, they are scarcely used in the field of anti-icing of glass insulators in transmission lines under glaze ice (the icing temperature is 0∼-5 °C). Herein, we prepared phase change microcapsules (MPCMs) and applied them to permanent room temperature vulcanized (PRTV) silicon rubber to prepare anti-icing coating on glass. The n -tetradecane and nucleating agent were used to obtain a requirable phase change temperature. The MPCMs in the coating released latent heat when the temperature dropped from 2.25 to -4.73 °C, which was consistent with the temperature of glaze icing. Furthermore, MPCMs roughened the coating surface and imparted superhydrophobic to the coating. Compared with PRTV coating, the prepared MPCM/PRTV coating extended the freezing time of water droplets from 1381 to 3432 s. Additionally, the MPCMs in the coating could absorb and release energy repeatedly and maintain intactness without cracking during icing/melting cycles, and the anti-icing/deicing performance of the MPCM/PRTV coating demonstrated durability. The heat storage and release of the MPCM/PRTV coating is driven by the temperature difference, thus, we define this coating as having a “temperature switch” effect. The prepared coating shows potential anti-icing applications for glass insulators under glaze ice where the temperature fluctuates within the phase transition temperature range of this coating.

In recent years, oil-contained deicing materials have aroused peoples' concern due to their weak ice adhesion feature. Yet the loss of lubricant on oil-contained surface caused by contact or volatilization should be considered. Oily sebum secreted by sebaceous glands lubricates and moisturizes our skin, and can be reproduced continuously even after daily cleaning. In this work, inspired by sebaceous glands, a self-lubricant (SL) coating with ultra-low ice adhesion and excellent deicing durability was designed via continuously secreting lubricants. To determine the suitable simulant of oily sebum, the tribological tests and theoretical simulation analysis of lubricant on ice were conducted, confirming the effect of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) lubricants. By well mixing lubricant and resin, and sebaceous glands-like structures formed in coating matrix after curing, which endowed coating with lubricant storage feature and sebum-like secretion structure. The affinity of PDMS molecules to ice and the regeneration of lubricant film ensured the deicing durability of coating. Ice adhesion strength can be kept below 100 kPa even after 100 icing-deicing cycles, and can recover low ice adhesion strength (~50 kPa) via lubricant secreting. This work highlights the importance of lubricant selection and gives a new vision to designing durable icephobic materials.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology plays a vital role in achieving China's “Dual Carbon” strategy. However, the efficiency and stability of PV modules are significantly compromised by harsh environments such as sandstorms, snow, and ice, particularly in arid or high-altitude regions. Conventional protective coatings are inadequate for simultaneously mitigating persistent dust accumulation and snow cover. In this study, a multifunctional anti-reflective coating was developed via a sol-gel method, integrating high transmittance, superhydrophobicity, mechanical durability, and electrothermal de-icing capability. The coating was engineered by tailoring the hydrolysis ratio of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and incorporating polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to enhance interfacial bonding followed by surface modification with fluorosilane to achieve excellent superhydrophobicity. The resulting coating exhibits an average transmittance exceeding 83 %, a water contact angle of 158°, and excellent wear resistance—maintaining its performance after 400 cm of sandpaper abrasion. Under −20 °C conditions, the initial ice formation time on the coated surface was five times longer than that on bare glass. Moreover, the coating enabled rapid and efficient snow and ice removal through short-duration electrothermal heating. This multifunctional coating provides a robust and scalable solution for year-round protection of PV modules in dusty and cold environments, demonstrating strong potential for practical applications.

Outdoor icephobic coatings are prone to damage, particularly in extreme weather conditions like freezing temperatures and acid rain. Damage to the coating will result in a loss of icephobic function and may lead to increased icing. Furthermore, it is imperative to incorporate sustainability into icephobic coatings as environmental consciousness grows. Herein, a vanillin-based icephobic coating with anti-extreme-environment self-healing was prepared by incorporating vanillin-based polyols into prepolymers terminated with isocyanates that include silicone oil. The coating exhibited low ice adhesion with a measurement of 8.8 kPa, which was mainly attributed to the hydrophobicity of PDMS and the hydrophobic and lubricating characteristics of silicone oil. Moreover, the coating's remarkable chemical stability and ability to resist fouling were due to its lubricating and hydrophobic properties. More importantly, the coating retains impressive self-healing abilities in extreme conditions (−20 °C, pH = 1, pH = 14) due to the multiple dynamic bonds within the coating and the water-repelling and plasticizing effects of silicone oil. The coating maintained its original hydrophobic characteristics and low ice adhesion strength even after several recycling and self-healing cycles, demonstrating remarkable lifespan and sustainability. This work facilitates meeting the need for anti-icing in outdoor areas, particularly in extremely cold, acidic, and alkaline conditions.
