To address the hazards posed by icing environments on flight safety, a series of anti-icing measures for aircraft have gradually developed. However, with the continuous enhancement of aircraft aerodynamic performance, especially the desire for engines and propellers to achieve higher fuel efficiency, optimization of modern aircraft anti-icing protection systems is required. Here, a method was proposed for creating a robust superhydrophobic photothermal coating with a micro-nano hierarchical structure by spraying on ice-prone areas of the aircraft, aimed at reducing the high energy consumption and cost of anti-icing systems. The superhydrophobic structure on the coating surface exhibited a static water contact angle of 159.5° and extremely low liquid adhesion, demonstrating excellent stability after mechanical wear, chemical corrosion, and ultraviolet irradiation tests. This structure allowed droplets to rebound quickly upon impact with the coating and completely detach within 11 ms, and could significantly delay the icing time of droplets on the coating surface in low-temperature environments, showing good anti-icing performance. The photothermal conversion performance of the coating ensured effective self-deicing under sunny conditions. Furthermore, icing wind tunnel tests validated the coating's anti-icing performance and photothermal effects, revealing that this coating could significantly reduce ice accumulation thickness. The results of this study provide options for achieving a low-energy, low-cost, and sustainable aircraft anti-icing protection system, conducive to the development of new anti-icing technologies.

In recent years, oil-contained deicing materials have aroused peoples' concern due to their weak ice adhesion feature. Yet the loss of lubricant on oil-contained surface caused by contact or volatilization should be considered. Oily sebum secreted by sebaceous glands lubricates and moisturizes our skin, and can be reproduced continuously even after daily cleaning. In this work, inspired by sebaceous glands, a self-lubricant (SL) coating with ultra-low ice adhesion and excellent deicing durability was designed via continuously secreting lubricants. To determine the suitable simulant of oily sebum, the tribological tests and theoretical simulation analysis of lubricant on ice were conducted, confirming the effect of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) lubricants. By well mixing lubricant and resin, and sebaceous glands-like structures formed in coating matrix after curing, which endowed coating with lubricant storage feature and sebum-like secretion structure. The affinity of PDMS molecules to ice and the regeneration of lubricant film ensured the deicing durability of coating. Ice adhesion strength can be kept below 100 kPa even after 100 icing-deicing cycles, and can recover low ice adhesion strength (~50 kPa) via lubricant secreting. This work highlights the importance of lubricant selection and gives a new vision to designing durable icephobic materials.

Smart slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have aroused remarkable attention owing to tremendous application foreground in biomedical instruments and industry. However, challenges still remain in fabricating durable SLIPSs. In this work, a fast and highly efficient self-repairing slippery surface (SPU-60M) was fabricated based on a polyurethane membrane and silicone oil. By introducing a great quantity of reversible disulfide bonds into the polymer backbone and hydrogen bonds in the polymer interchain, this SLIPS material could be quickly repaired in 15 min with 97.8% healing efficiency. Moreover, the self-healing efficiency could be maintained at 42.75% after the 10th cutting–healing cycle. Notably, SPU-60M showed excellent self-repairing ability not only in an ambient environment but also in an underwater environment and at ultralow temperatures. Besides, the icing delay time (DT) of SPU-60M could be prolonged to 1182 s at −15 °C, and the ice adhesion strength was only 10.33 kPa at −30 °C. In addition, SPU-60M had excellent anti-fouling performance with BSA adsorption of 2.41 μg/cm2 and Escherichia coli CFU counts of 41 × 104. These findings provide a facile way to design highly efficient self-repairing SLIPSs with multifunctionality.

To address the poor water resistance and dust susceptibility of carbon fiber board, a simple and efficient spraying method was used to prepare a superhydrophobic coating on the carbon fiber board that was resistant to dust and ice. First, a hydrolyzed solution of KH550 was applied and cured to the carbon fiber board. Then, a solution was prepared by mixing silicone rubber (XC-107) with γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) in ethyl acetate. This solution was divided into three glass beakers. The first beaker kept the original solution unchanged. Nanometer silica (Nano-SiO2) was introduced into the solution in the second glass beaker, while ethyl acetate was added to dilute the solution in the third glass beaker. Finally, the prepared solutions were sequentially sprayed onto the surface of the carbon fiber board according to the order of the glass beakers. The results indicate that the dust removal efficiency of the superhydrophobic carbon fiber board reaches 98.36%, which is an improvement of 9.45% compared to ordinary carbon fiber board, with a water contact angle (WCA) of 158°. Meanwhile, in the anti-icing test, the icing time of the superhydrophobic carbon fiber board is delayed by more than four times compared to ordinary carbon fiber board. Compared to other similar superhydrophobic carbon fiber boards, this superhydrophobic carbon fiber board features a simple and efficient preparation method, is easy to produce on a large scale, has low cost, uses commonly available materials, and offers strong scalability while possessing characteristics such as dust resistance, anti-icing, abrasion resistance, and sandstorm resistance. This indicates that the superhydrophobic carbon fiber board can be used in many different fields, such as structural components of aircraft and spacecraft, body and interior parts of vehicles, bicycle frames, badminton and tennis rackets, bridges, medical devices, enclosures, and components for electronic products, bulletproof armor, drones, and more.

Superhydrophobic coatings have attracted extensive interest from researchers in recent years. An important future development direction involves utilizing zero-cost solid waste materials as structural components to create superhydrophobic coatings. In this article, fly ash(FA), a common solid waste, was used as the main material, epoxy resin (ER) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were used as the main film-forming substances. A multifunctional FA-superhydrophobic coating ER/FA@PDMS/SiO 2 was prepared by spraying method. FA-superhydrophobic coating exhibited a water contact angle (WCA) of 156.4° ± 0.8° and water sliding angle (WSA) of 4.5° ± 0.1°. ER/FA primer has an irregular porous structure, and the PDMS/SiO 2 penetrate into the porous structure. The porous ER/FA coating can store PDMS and SiO 2 , and the FA superhydrophobic coating has similar rough structure and low surface energy inside and on the surface. FA-superhydrophobic coating have strong mechanical stability, after the surface coating is destroyed, the internal structure of the coating can still maintain excellent performance. The corrosion current density of FA-superhydrophobic coating is about 9.392 × 10 −7 A/cm 2 , which is one order of magnitude lower than ER/FA coating. FA-superhydrophobic coating can delay icing by about 121.55 % under extremely cold conditions. This simple and low-cost superhydrophobic coating has great application value in self-cleaning, anti-icing and anti-corrosion.

Slippery coatings, such as the slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS), have gained significant attention for their potential applications in anti-icing and anti-fouling. However, they lack durability when subjected to mechanical impact. In this study, we have developed a robust slippery coating by blending polyurethane acrylate (PUA) with methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) and perfluoropolyether (PFPE) in the solvent of butyl acetate. The resulting mixture is homogeneous and allows for uniform coating on various substrates using a drop coating process followed by drying at 160 °C for 3 h. The cured coating exhibits excellent water repellency (contact angle of ~108° and sliding angle of ~8°), high transparency (average visible transmittance of ~90%), exceptional adherence to the substrate (5B rating according to ASTMD 3359), and remarkable hardness (4H on the pencil hardness scale). Moreover, the coating is quite flexible and can be folded without affecting its wettability. The robustness of the coating is evident in its ability to maintain a sliding angle below 25° even when subjected to abrasion, water jetting, high temperature, and UV irradiation. Due to its excellent nonwetting properties, the coating can be employed in anti-icing, anti-graffiti, and anti-sticking applications. It effectively reduces ice adhesion on aluminum substrates from approximately 217 kPa to 12 kPa. Even after 20 cycles of icing and de-icing, there is only a slight increase in ice adhesion, stabilizing at 40 kPa. The coating can resist graffiti for up to 400 cycles of writing with an oily marker pen and erasing with a tissue. Additionally, the coating allows for easy removal of 3M tape thereon without leaving any residue. Keywords:solid slippery coating;durability;anti-freezing;anti-graffiti;anti-smudge

Polymer coatings (PC) have been widely used for electrical equipment. However, the hydrophobicity of PC is generally low, which falls short of the need for electrical equipment against safe operation. Here, we report a scalable PC based on a SIS grafted KH590 by click chemistry reaction, and in-situ synthesized SiO 2 filled the coatings with intrinsic micro-nano structures to attain the superhydrophobicity, which are exhibit insulating property ( E b of 110.9 MV/m, wet flashover strength of 39.5 % higher). Both simulation and experimental results confirm that SIS grafted KH590 and TEOS hydrolyzed SiO 2 form dense but rough surface at the micron-nanoscale, decreasing surface energy. In combining the advantages of extraordinary insulating performance, this approach is viable for large-scale production of PC.

The issue of anti-icing and deicing in the low-temperature and high-humidity environment of polar regions has long troubled researchers. The problem cannot be solved perfectly by superhydrophobic coatings alone, and multifunctional composite coatings as well have become a research hotspot. First, hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets were functionalized with polypyrrole (PPy), and then hydrophobic modification was completed by grafting perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (FAS) to obtain fluorine-modified polypyrrole-functionalized boron nitride (F-BN@PPy). Finally, a photothermal superhydrophobic coating was successfully prepared by using silicone resin as a binder. The coating exhibited excellent photothermal properties, reaching 80 °C in just 3 min under 1 sun irradiation at 25 °C. This can be attributed to the high photothermal conversion efficiency of PPy and the nanostructure of the coating surface, which enhances sunlight utilization. The coating also demonstrated superior hydrophobic properties, reflected by a contact angle of 162° and a sliding angle of 1°, due to the hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate forming a rough micronanosilica shell and the grafting of the low surface energy FAS. In addition, the performance of the coating maintained good hydrophobic properties by sandpaper abrasion, falling sand impact, bending experiments, or immersion in strong acids and bases for 7 days. This shows that the coating has good mechanical properties and chemical durability. Compared to tinplate, the coating successfully delayed the complete freezing of droplets on its surface at −20 °C by 10 min. On a cooling platform at −40 °C, the F-BN@PPy coating with 1 sun light reached 5.7 °C in only 90 s. The F-BN@PPy photothermal superhydrophobic coating provides an excellent anti-icing/deicing solution for extreme environments.

Development of superhydrophobic coatings is restricted by –their poor durability and complicated preparation process. Herein, we prepared a simple and efficient protocol to synthesize a superhydrophobic coating with excellent mechanical properties and durability for large-scale application. Initially, the free radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA), glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and heptadecafluorodecyl acrylate (HFA) were carried out to prepare polymer PGMH. PGMH was then mixed with poly(vinylidene) fluoride (PVDF) to finally form the PGMH-PVDF superhydrophobic coatings. During solvent vapor annealing, fluoroalkyl groups and PVDF clusters tended to migrate to solid-gas interface and enriched the coating surface. The self-assembly behavior of PVDF clusters was attributed to good compatibility of PVDF clusters with HFA segments in blending system. In addition, MMA and GMA segments in PGMH deposited at the bottom to provide mechanical strength and substrates adhesion. Besides, the prepared superhydrophobic coatings demonstrated outstanding abrasion resistance for up to 100 sandpaper abrasion. In addition, the superhydrophobic coatings also exhibited exceptional chemical stability and self-cleaning property. The static anti-icing characterizations confirmed that the PGMH-PVDF films possessed good icing-delaying ability. Therefore, the superhydrophobic coatings would have tremendous potential applications in the field of waterproof, self-cleaning, and anti-icing surfaces.

High durability, low cost, and superior anti-icing and active deicing multifunctional surface coatings, especially in the extreme environment, are highly desired to inhibit and/or eliminate the detriment of icing in many fields, such as automobile, aerospace, and power transmission. Herein, we first report a facile and versatile strategy to prepare novel slippery polyols-infused porous surfaces (SPIPS’s) with the inexpensive polyols as the lubricant liquids. These SPIPS’s are fabricated by a spray-coating approach based on amino-modified magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (MNP@NH2) and amphiphilic P(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) copolymer covalent cross-linked hybrids, followed by infusion with various polyols. The as-prepared surface exhibits excellent antifrosting property, that is, it can greatly postpone frost formation as long as 2700 s at −18 °C. Meanwhile, differential scanning calorimetry results clearly demonstrate that SPIPS’s show a remarkable freezing point depression capacity and the crystallization point of water can be decreased as low as −36.8 °C. The SPIPS also displays an extremely low ice adhesion strength (0.1 kPa) due to its unique surface characteristics. Moreover, outstanding active thermal deicing property is achieved for these slippery surfaces because of intrinsically photothermal effect of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticle. Hence, these results indicate that this kind of multifunctional bioinspired slippery surface, with superb stability, good cost effectiveness, and easy fabrication, can be used as a promising candidate for anti-icing and deicing applications.

Superhydrophobic surfaces are considered to be an effective method for anti-icing, but passive anti-icing alone is not as effective as it should be, so it is crucial to develop effective anti-icing techniques. In this study, a photothermal anti-icing structure with multienergy barriers was designed by combining active and passive anti-icing technologies and prepared by a three-step method of laser etching, hydrothermal growth of nanostructures, and chemical modification based on the Cassie–Baxter–Wenzel transition theory. The experimental results show that the static water contact angle of the prepared surface is up to 160°, the sliding angle is less than 3.6°, and the surface temperature is 25 °C higher than that of the original control group over 100 s under standard solar irradiation. The multienergy barrier design greatly prolongs the time of the anti-icing, and the durability test shows that the surface maintains superhydrophobicity even after the abrasion of sandpaper and the impact of sand. This superhydrophobic photothermal coating has great potential for anti-icing and deicing applications.

The emergence of ice formation and accretion presents significant challenges, catalyzing an urgent need for clean and efficient anti-icing solutions. Solar energy, a powerful and sustainable resource, can be integrated with the micronano-structured superhydrophobic surface to enhance anti-icing and deicing performance through the solar photothermal effect, overcoming the limitations of a traditional superhydrophobic surface. Herein, inspired by bamboo and lotus leaves, a synergetic photothermal anti-icing superhydrophobic surface (PASS) has been developed. This was achieved through nanosecond laser ablation and chemical modification, resulting in a surface with remarkable superhydrophobic low adhesion (water contact angle >167°, rolling angle < 2°). The PASS notably extends the freezing time of water droplets to 1056 s and delays frost formation to 47 min at 60% humidity. Moreover, the surface retains its superhydrophobic properties after enduring several rigorous tests. Additionally, the photothermal conversion efficiency reaches up to 67.31%, and the temperature increases to 95.6 °C under 1.5 sun illumination for 600 s in ambient conditions (Tr = 7 °C). The ice melting time is only 120 s under 1 sun illumination at −15 °C. Consequently, the PASS sample stands as a preeminent strategy for anti-icing and deicing pursuits owing to its exceptional photothermal proficiency, superhydrophobicity, and enduring robustness.
