Presently, it is necessary to develop fully flexible sensors for the next generation of wearable electronics, and in this case, hydrogel-based flexible sensors are highly attractive due to their unique mechanical performances. However, the low-temperature freezing and bending fatigue of hydrogels severely hinder their application in flexible sensors. Herein, a polymeric dual-function hydrogel (DF-hydrogel) integrating self-healing and anti-freezing properties was prepared by building a dual dynamic network for application as ionic skin with excellent and reliable sensing performances. In DF-hydrogel, ethylene glycol (EG) and disulfide bonds were anchored in the molecular structure of double-bond-capped water-based polyurethane crosslinkers (DB-waPU) and subsequently introduced into the molecular backbone of the hydrogel via free radical polymerization. A multi-hydrogen bonding network was formed by the copolymerization of acrylamide with 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone (UPy)-functionalized 1-vinylimidazole ionic liquid. Due to the dual dynamic network, DF-hydrogel exhibited exceptional self-healing capabilities and mechanical properties such as high healing efficiency, stretchability, compressibility, and self-adhesion. The anchored EG molecule in the polymer backbone endowed the hydrogel with intrinsic freeze-resistance without compromising its mechanical properties. The introduced poly(ionic liquid) provided free ions to the hydrogel, enhancing its ionic conductivity up to 9.6 mS cm−1 in the absence of applied electrolyte salts. The DF-hydrogel-based ionic skins exhibited rapid, reversible, and dependable resistance changes with a wide range of strain sensing capabilities (10–300%). Moreover, a prototype 2D sensor array was fabricated to detect strains or pressures in two dimensions, strongly showing potential for the preparation of electronic skin, touch-pads, biosensors, and other applications.

Flexible hydrogels have received significant attention for their excellent mechanical properties, fast response and good strain sensitivity. However, relatively little research has been conducted on the investigation of hydrogels that exhibit frost resistance, water retention, and transparency characteristics. In this paper, a new flexible strain sensors material was prepared by introducing calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) and hydrolysed keratin (HK) into the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) system through complex chemical bond. The PVA/CaCl 2 /HK hydrogel exhibited excellent mechanical properties, with a tensile strength of 1.578 MPa and a maximum strain of 934 %. Moreover, it showed high transparency, with a transmittance of up to 90 %. The hydrogel demonstrated remarkable water retention properties with about 8 hours of dry resistance under constant temperatures of 40 °C, 60 °C, 80 °C and 100 °C. Additionally, it had excellent frost resistance with a glass transition temperature of −23 °C, making it environmentally tolerant and capable of maintaining long-term stability. Notably, during the experiment, the PVA/CaCl 2 /HK hydrogel exhibited excellent electrical conductivity and self-powered performance, with a power supply capacity of approximately 14.6 mV. The results of this work provide a promising direction for the development of electronic materials for powered hydrogel strain sensors.

Traditional ionic conductive hydrogel was prepared by chemically crosslinking the polymer chains to form network. However, the chemically crosslinked ionic conductive hydrogel usually showed limited elongation at break and high hysteresis during stretching process. Here, a simple strategy of synthesizing fully physically crosslinked ionic conductive supramolecular hydrogel without chemical crosslinker was purposed. Hydrophilic salt not only act as the ion supplier, but also provide the spatial confinement effect to form the completely physically crosslinked hydrogel. Firstly, CaCl 2 was used as the representative salt. The optimal PVA/PAM/CaCl 2 ionic conductive hydrogel (PPC), showed excellent tensile performance (2400.3 ± 140.63 %), anti-freezing performance (−28.8 °C), high conductivity (4.8 ± 0.01 S/m), excellent stability at room temperature, low hysteresis, and high transparency. The conductivity of PPC showed no sensitivity to the tensile strain. This innovative combination enables PPC ionic conductive hydrogel to have extraordinary versatility. The flexible all-solid-state supercapacitor assembled with PPC ionic conductive hydrogel as the electrolyte has a high area specific capacitance (136.9 mF/cm 2 ). The prepared supercapacitor can maintain good stability under certain tensile deformation (The capacitance retention rate was 87.7 % when stretched at 200 %). Moreover, other high hydrophilic salts including LiCl, ZnCl 2 , MgCl 2 and AlCl 3 were used to prepare ionic conductive PVA/PAM hydrogel to verify the universality of this preparation method.

Recently, significant progress has been made regarding conductive hydrogels-based flexible sensors in health detection, electronic skin, soft robots, etc. However, the requirement of bonding with the substrate through the adhesive tape, brokenness sensitivity, and degradation of performance under low-temperature environments, strongly limit the wide applications of conductive hydrogels in flexible sensors. To solve these problems, this study introduces lithium chloride (LiCl) into poly(vinyl alcohol)/tannic acid/polyacrylamide (PVA/TA/PAM) hydrogels to endow the hydrogels with excellent conductivity and antifreeze properties. In addition, the addition of tannic acid (TA) and zwitterionic 3-[Dimethyl-[2-(2-methylprop-2-enoyloxy)ethyl]azaniumyl]propane-1-sulfonate (SBMA) enables the hydrogel to have good self-healing performance (after 72 h of healing at 20 °C, the healing efficiency of fracture stress is 24%, and the healing efficiency of fracture strain is 52%) and adhesion (the adhesion strength to paper at 20 °C is 14.12 KPa). The sensors based on PVA/TA/PAM composite hydrogels exhibit good sensibility, stability, and durability, and can respond quickly to human joint activities (finger bending, wrist bending, arm bending, and leg bending). Therefore, the multifunctional PVA/TA/PAM composite hydrogel demonstrates significant potential for applications in flexible strain sensors under extreme environments.

The rational design of the aerogel pore structure facilitates the maximum excitation of the materials physicochemical properties, which enables the modulation of their electromagnetic performance. However, the controllable adjustment of the aerogel pore structure remains a significant challenge. Here, the freeze-thawing process and thermal annealing treatment are introduced to prepare reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/iron (Fe)/carbon nanocoil (CNC) aerogels. The composite aerogels with tunable pore structure are obtained by adjusting the content of CNC. Both experiments and simulations confirm that the pore structure with the addition of CNC presents a continuous 3D conductive network, which improves the conductivity loss and polarization loss. Meanwhile, the amorphous carbon structure within the CNC causes structural defects, which further enhance the polarization loss. Therefore, the rGO/Fe/CNC aerogel with optimized pore structure has lightweight and efficient electromagnetic wave absorption. At an ultra-low filling ratio of 0.8 wt%, the effective absorption bandwidth reaches 7.9 GHz and the optimal reflection loss is −43.5 dB. In addition, due to the 3D continuous network interwoven of aerogels and the temperature stability of carbon nanomaterials, composite aerogels have excellent thermal insulation, antifreeze performance, and hydrophobicity. This multifunctional absorber has great potential for application in complex and changing electromagnetic environments.

Natural polymer hydrogels are promising candidates for solid-state electrolytes in zinc-ion batteries. They are safe, biocompatible, and mechanically robust. However, the ionic conductivity of most natural polymer-based hydrogels is unsatisfactory, and they are particularly problematic at sub-zero temperatures because freezing severely limits their functionality. In this study, we fabricate composite hydrogels with high ionic conductivity (25.37 mS cm −1 ). This is done by blending two kinds of natural polymers, guar gum (GG) and sodium alginate (SA). The zinc-ion batteries with GG/SA hydrogel electrolytes show a superior electrochemical performance (354.9 mAh g −1 at 0.15 A g −1 , 137.0 mAh g −1 at 6 A g −1 and capacity retention of 91.52% over 1000 cycles) than the zinc-ion batteries with the pure GG hydrogel electrolyte. In addition, to extend the application range of GG/SA hydrogels into the sub-zero temperature region, we introduce ethylene glycol (EG) into GG/SA to form GG/SA/EG anti-freeze hydrogel. Below -20 °C, the GG/SA/EG hydrogel maintains a high ionic-conductivity (6.19 mS cm −1 ), and the zinc-ion batteries, which were made of GG/SA/EG hydrogel electrolyte, showed an excellent low-temperature discharge performance, for a specific capacity of 181.5 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 . This study describes a new approach for the development of natural polymer-based hydrogel electrolytes with high ionic-conductivity and good anti-freeze capability.

A nature-inspired strategy has been developed to prepare polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/catechol-modified quaternized chitosan (QCS-C)/MXene hydrogels with good self-adhesion, frost-resistance, and high ion-conductivity. The PVA/QCS-C/MXene hydrogel shows an ionic conductivity of 8.82 S m−1 and a gauge factor of 33.53 at low strain (0–10%), and remains flexible and conductive at −47 °C. The PVA/QCS-C15/MXene hydrogel displays promising potential as an ionically conductive hydrogel sensor for applications in flexible electronic devices.

A multifunctional composite that can withstand puncture threats and endure extreme environmental conditions is pivotal for next-generation personal protective equipment (PPE). Herein, we report a flexible Kevlar-reinforced hydrogel composite that simultaneously exhibits outstanding puncture resistance, strain-sensing functionality, and anti-freezing performance. The PVA hydrogel matrix, structurally enhanced via immersion in Na 3 Cit and Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 dual-salt solution, demonstrates excellent mechanical robustness and strain-resistance responsiveness across both ambient and subzero environments. Integrated with Kevlar fabric, the flexible composite achieves a maximum quasi-static and dynamic puncture force of 69.55 N and 318.70 N, representing 4.07-fold and 3.09-fold improvements, respectively, over the neat fabric, and absorbs 94.58% of the impact energy from a drop hammer. Notably, the composite maintains superior puncture resistance (maximum quasi-static and dynamic puncture force of 55.97 N and 265.58 N) and flexibility (bending stiffness of 7.78 mN·cm) at -15 °C. Its strain-sensing capabilities remain sensitive and stable, offering excellent linearity, a broad detection range, and consistent performance over 500 cycles at both 25 °C and -15 °C, enabling real-time, reliable monitoring of human motion across diverse environmental conditions. This work offers a scalable and practical approach toward fabricating high-performance, all-weather flexible PPE for protective and wearable sensing applications in harsh environments.

Superwetting interfacial porous membranes with different wettabilities have enormous potential for wastewater treatment. The wettability of most smart separation membranes is controlled by external environmental factors such as temperature, pH, and pressure. In a constant environment, they have only one kind of wettability and can separate only one type of emulsion, and in multiple extreme environments, they become “unintelligent” and even lose their separation ability. Inspired by China's “Face-Changing in Sichuan Opera,” we have prepared a novel electrospun SiNPs/ZnNPs-SiO 2 /TiO 2 (SZST) nanofiber membrane by a calcining-spraying method. The obtained membrane can rapidly switch its wettability in various environments for the controllable separation of both oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions. The advanced electrospinning, combined with micro-nano hierarchical structures, greatly improved the wettability and porosity of the membrane, making the separation efficiency more than 99% stable. Additionally, the flux was maintained at about 2000 L/m 2 h. Interestingly, the separation efficiency showed almost no change in various harsh environments (e.g., strongly acidic and alkaline conditions, high or low temperatures, and even salty media), and the developed membrane exhibited excellent recyclability. In addition to good corrosion resistance and chemical stability, the membrane demonstrated excellent fire and frost resistance. Therefore, the SZST nanofiber membrane has great practical value in industrial production.

Adaptive regulation of solar and thermal radiation by windows in diverse (hot and cold) climates is essential to reduce building energy consumption. However, conventional hydrogel-based thermochromic smart windows lack thermal radiation regulation, and have difficulty to combine high solar regulation with excellent freezing resistance. It is challenging to integrate the above performance into one hydrogel-based thermochromic window. Here, we firstly prepared poly(N-isopropylacrylamide- co -N, N-dimethylacrylamide)/ethylene glycol (PNDE) hydrogels with tunable and excellent freezing resistance (below −100 °C) by adding the anti-freezing agent ethylene glycol, and assembled PNDE hydrogels, polyvinylidene fluoride and polymethyl methacrylate-silver nanowires panels into a freezing-resistant smart window with solar and thermal radiation regulation (STR). PNDE hydrogels had an excellent thermochromic performance with luminous transmittance ( T lum ) of 89.3 %, solar regulation performance (Δ T sol ) of 80.7 % and tunable phase change temperature ( τ c , 22–44 °C). The assembled STR window showed high T lum of 68.2 %, high Δ T sol of 62.6 %, suitable τ c of ∼30 °C and freezing resistance to low temperature of −27 °C. Moreover, the different thermal emissivity (0.94 and 0.68) of the two sides of the STR window gave it the ability of radiative cooling in hot climates and warm-keeping in cold climates. Compared to the conventional thermochromic windows, the STR window promotes heat dissipation in hot conditions while reduces heat loss in cold conditions and is applicable to diverse climates, which is a promising energy-saving device for reducing building energy consumption.

Although ionic conductive hydrogels (ICHs) have been widely utilized to fabricate excellent flexible sensors, traditional ICHs are generally easy to swell, resulting in the inevitable failure of flexible sensors. Herein, a facile and effective strategy is employed to impart ICHs with excellent mechanical properties, satisfying anti-swelling property, favorable anti-freezing property, and high ion-conductivity simultaneously, that is to construct multiple hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) through directly dissolving cellulose in salt solutions, avoiding the tedious preparation process of traditional ICHs as well. Notably, the cellulose is directly dissolved in the solution containing zinc ions (Zn 2+ ) and aluminum ions (Al 3+ ), and then acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AAm) are copolymerized in it. Multiple H-bonds are formed among the abundant − OH groups, −NH 2 groups, and − COOH groups belonging to cellulose, AAm, and AA, respectively. As a result, the improved anti-swelling ability (88.03 %) and compressive performance (24.11 MPa) of the resultant Ion-C-P(AA-co-AAm) hydrogel are achieved. Besides, excellent conductivity (48.39 mS/cm) and frost resistance are provided by generous Zn 2+ and Al 3+ . Moreover, Ion-C-P(AA-co-AAm) hydrogel exhibits favorable sensitivity in monitoring human activities and can output stable electrical signals in a low-temperature environment, showing a great potential application for flexible sensors.
