To address the poor water resistance and dust susceptibility of carbon fiber board, a simple and efficient spraying method was used to prepare a superhydrophobic coating on the carbon fiber board that was resistant to dust and ice. First, a hydrolyzed solution of KH550 was applied and cured to the carbon fiber board. Then, a solution was prepared by mixing silicone rubber (XC-107) with γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) in ethyl acetate. This solution was divided into three glass beakers. The first beaker kept the original solution unchanged. Nanometer silica (Nano-SiO2) was introduced into the solution in the second glass beaker, while ethyl acetate was added to dilute the solution in the third glass beaker. Finally, the prepared solutions were sequentially sprayed onto the surface of the carbon fiber board according to the order of the glass beakers. The results indicate that the dust removal efficiency of the superhydrophobic carbon fiber board reaches 98.36%, which is an improvement of 9.45% compared to ordinary carbon fiber board, with a water contact angle (WCA) of 158°. Meanwhile, in the anti-icing test, the icing time of the superhydrophobic carbon fiber board is delayed by more than four times compared to ordinary carbon fiber board. Compared to other similar superhydrophobic carbon fiber boards, this superhydrophobic carbon fiber board features a simple and efficient preparation method, is easy to produce on a large scale, has low cost, uses commonly available materials, and offers strong scalability while possessing characteristics such as dust resistance, anti-icing, abrasion resistance, and sandstorm resistance. This indicates that the superhydrophobic carbon fiber board can be used in many different fields, such as structural components of aircraft and spacecraft, body and interior parts of vehicles, bicycle frames, badminton and tennis rackets, bridges, medical devices, enclosures, and components for electronic products, bulletproof armor, drones, and more.

CsxWO3-ZnO-SiO2 smart coatings were proposed to achieve multiple functions, such as thermal insulation, anti-dust, anti-fogging and blocking harmful ultraviolet light, etc. The transparent hydrophobic hybrid resins were prepared from methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) and SiO2 sol, which was used as the substrate of the composite coating. The CsxWO3 is served as the near-infrared (NIR) absorber, and the ZnO is functioned as the ultraviolet (UV) blocking agent. Coatings with different ratios of CsxWO3 and ZnO were successfully prepared by co-blending with nano-SiO2 resin. The morphology, microstructure, surface composition, hydrophobicity, thermal stability, anti-dust and optical property of the composite coatings were investigated comprehensively. The transmittance of C10Z10 (CsxWO3 10%, ZnO 10%, nano-SiO2 resin 80%) coating at 370 nm is 2.3%, and the value of Solar Energy Transmittance Selectivity (SETS) is 0.665, which exhibits excellent NIR shielding ability. Compared with nano-SiO2 resin coating, the thermal insulation temperature difference can reach 7.0 °C. The C10Z10 coating showed good durability in the twenty times anti-dust repeated tests and the efficiency could maintain 70.3% after the repeating tests. The coating showed excellent sustainability after a 45-day outdoor exposure experiment and a 240 h of artificial accelerated aging experiment. Thus, the proposed CsxWO3-ZnO-SiO2 coatings are promising for outdoor smart windows.

Antireflection (AR) coatings on solar glass, used in photovoltaic (PV) modules, generally encounter harsh environments, which demands that AR coatings must hinder moisture penetration , scratch damage, and dust accumulation. Though chemical modification generally benefits the multi-functionalization of AR coatings, it is likely to bring about a degradation of optical and mechanical properties. We demonstrated that a well-controlled dual precursor modification/hybridization process of hollow silica nanospheres was the key to achieve the robust multifunctional AR coatings. The dual precursor-derived AR coatings exhibited an increase of 5.08% in average transmittance at wavelengths from 300 to 1200 nm and a small relative reduction below 0.6% after an ultra-long highly-accelerated humidity and temperature stress test duration of 120 h, equivalent to a 5000 h damp heat test at a temperature and a relative humidity of 85 °C and 85%, respectively, as well as the excellent abrasion and dust resistance. The effects of the dual precursor-derived AR coatings on PV devices were evaluated by the encapsulated crystalline silicon mini-modules, where the improvements of 2.45% and 3.20% in the short-circuit current and the power conversion efficiency ( J sc and PCE) on average, respectively, relative to the bare glass encapsulated mini-modules were observed; meanwhile, the dust resistance of the AR coatings brought about the less degradations of 1.01% and 1.15% in J sc and PCE, respectively, after the dust settling and removal tests, while the mini-modules with bare glass were 3.45% and 4.40%. It was believed that the dual-precursor, potentially, multi-precursor protocols would pave the way towards developing mechanically robust AR coatings with various fascinating functionalities, such as anti-fingerprint, anti-soiling, anti-fogging, and anti-icing.

Transparent protective coatings capable of preventing fog and dust accumulation have broad application prospect in photovoltaic systems , optical devices and consumer electronics. Although a number of superhydrophobic coatings have been developed for self-cleaning purpose over the past three decades, there is still a lack of surfaces that can simultaneously possess high transparency, remarkable superhydrophobicity, and excellent fog and dust resistance. In this study, we have prepared surfaces featuring sub-wavelength nanofiber cluster structures through a facile plasma etching method, and further modified the surface with liquid-like perfluoropolyether (PFPE) brushes. The prepared PFPE modified nanofibrous surface (PFPE-NS) exhibits superior optical transparency (transmittance 90.4 % ± 0.7 %) and water repellency , with a water contact angle as high as 171.0° ± 0.6° and sliding angle down to 0.5° ± 0.1° (5 µL). More importantly, benefitted from the nanofiber cluster structures and the slippery liquid-like surface chemistry, the adhesion and accumulation of fog droplets and dust particles on PFPE-NS is greatly inhibited. As a consequence, PFPE-NS can keep excellent optical clearness after 2 h fogging test and maintain an average transmittance above 87 % after 24 h dusting test. Our study provides a promising strategy through constructing liquid-like nanofibrous coating for optical protection that could be applicable in practical rainy, foggy, and dusty environments.

The unavoidable dust accumulation seriously degrades generating efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) panels. Recently, the electrostatic de-dusting method based on transparent conductive film (TCF) has become a research hotspot in the field of PV panel de-dusting. The de-dusting effect is closely related to the performance of the TCF. Considering the application scenario, this study prepared a single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) TCF employing the rod coating method using polysilazane as a binder. Consequently, a comprehensive evaluation index of photoelectric properties K A was proposed. Performance evaluation and application tests of hydrophilic dustproof and electrostatic de-dusting were conducted. Besides, three types of artificial accelerated aging experiments and two types of mechanical durability tests were conducted on the SWCNTs TCFs to evaluate the changes in the performance of the films in the actual application environments of the PV panels. The experimental results showed that the K A of SWCNTs TCFs reached 0.89, the light transmittance reached 90.69 %, the sheet resistance was 0.23 MΩ/□, and the electrostatic de-dusting rate ( ω ) reached 97.91 %. The TCFs were also multifunctional with good hydrophilic properties, with a self-cleaning rate ( α ) of 94.38 % under natural rainfall conditions. Further, the SWCNTs TCFs also exhibited good adaptability to outdoor environment. After weathering tests other than abrasion resistance, K A was greater than 0.81, α was better than that for PV glass, ω was greater than 96.82 %. The results of this study are expected to provide effective support for the optimisation and innovation of de-dusting methods for PV panels and the further development of PV industry.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology plays a vital role in achieving China's “Dual Carbon” strategy. However, the efficiency and stability of PV modules are significantly compromised by harsh environments such as sandstorms, snow, and ice, particularly in arid or high-altitude regions. Conventional protective coatings are inadequate for simultaneously mitigating persistent dust accumulation and snow cover. In this study, a multifunctional anti-reflective coating was developed via a sol-gel method, integrating high transmittance, superhydrophobicity, mechanical durability, and electrothermal de-icing capability. The coating was engineered by tailoring the hydrolysis ratio of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and incorporating polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to enhance interfacial bonding followed by surface modification with fluorosilane to achieve excellent superhydrophobicity. The resulting coating exhibits an average transmittance exceeding 83 %, a water contact angle of 158°, and excellent wear resistance—maintaining its performance after 400 cm of sandpaper abrasion. Under −20 °C conditions, the initial ice formation time on the coated surface was five times longer than that on bare glass. Moreover, the coating enabled rapid and efficient snow and ice removal through short-duration electrothermal heating. This multifunctional coating provides a robust and scalable solution for year-round protection of PV modules in dusty and cold environments, demonstrating strong potential for practical applications.

To address the problem of respirable dust control during coal seam mining, this paper proposed a stepwise polymerization strategy – “prior penetration followed by cross-linking” – and developed a double network (DN) gel dust suppressant HPMC-g-HPA/AM. Composed of the dust suppressant base solution (DSP) and the initiator, the dust suppressant can achieve in-situ cross-linking and solidification within coal seams to control dust. Experimental results demonstrated that DSP exhibits low viscosity, high permeability and excellent wettability, and can efficiently penetrate coal seams, while the initiator has even lower viscosity and better permeability, with a penetration rate 2.11 times that of DSP. The significant rheological difference between the two ensures the implementation of the stepwise strategy. After DSP and the initiator successively penetrate fractures and pores of coal seams, they undergo in-situ cross-linking to form a “flexible – rigid” DN gel. This significantly enhances the moisture retention capacity and mechanical properties of coal. The gel improves the dust adsorption and agglomeration capacity through the chemical anchoring effect combined with polar groups of coal, and further inhibits dust dispersion through the physical encapsulation effect, thereby reducing the dust generation rates by 47.16 % (≤180 μm) and 55.89 % (≤75 μm). The respirable dust proportion decreases from 12.08 % to 7.58 %, achieving effective respirable dust control and ensuring occupational safety.

Transparent superhydrophobic coatings provide passive self-cleaning and dust removal functionality for photovoltaic (PV) modules to sustain the energy conversion efficiency, which is highly dependent on micro/nanostructures of coatings. However, it remains challenge to enhance the micro/nanostructures robustness of such coatings while preserving their optical transparency, self-cleaning and dust removal functionality. Herein, we proposed dense and conformal “nano-armor” by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on transparent superhydrophobic coatings to enhance their resistance to particle impact and structural durability. Experimental results revealed that the ALD-treated coating (SZ90-F) maintained the high optical transparency (89.27 %) and superhydrophobicity with water contact angle of 160.3°, while also exhibiting excellent dust removal efficiency of 99.23 %. Meanwhile, the SZ90-F coating retained the superhydrophobicity and excellent dust removal performance after exposure to 6000 g of sand and 4000 g of water droplets, respectively. Mechanism analysis revealed that the enhanced durability of the transparent superhydrophobic coatings originated from the ZnO layer deposited by ALD, which formed strong chemical bonds on the micro/nanostructures surface, resulting in a continuous “nano-armor” structure, thereby providing effective protection against dust impact and preventing damage to the micro/nanostructures. This study provides a novel strategy for designing durable, transparent superhydrophobic coatings with enhanced mechanical robustness.
