Conductive hydrogel which belongs to a type of soft materials has recently become promising candidate for flexible electronics application. However, it remains difficult for conductive hydrogel-based strain sensors to achieve the organic unity of large stretchability, high conductivity, self-healing, anti-freezing, anti-drying and transparency. Herein, a multifunctional conductive organohydrogel with all of the above superiorities is prepared by crosslinking polyacrylamide (PAM) with dialdehyde starch (DAS) in glycerol-water binary solvent. Attributing to the synergy of abundant hydrogen bonding and Schiff base interactions caused by introducing glycerol and dialdehyde starch, respectively, the organohydrogel achieved balanced mechanical and electrical properties. Besides, the addition of glycerol promoted the water-locking effects, making the organohydrogel retain the superior mechanical properties and conductivity even at extreme conditions. The resultant organohydrogel strain sensor exhibits desirable sensing performance with high sensitivity (GF = 6.07) over a wide strain range (0–697 %), enabling the accurate monitoring of subtle body motions even at −30 °C. On the basis, a hand gesture monitor system based on the organohydrogel sensors arrays is constructed using machine learning method, achieving a considerable sign language recognition rate of 100 %, and thus providing convenience for communications between the hearing or speaking-impaired and general person.

Artificial shape-morphing hydrogels are emerging toward various applications, spanning from electronic skins to healthcare. However, the low freezing and drying tolerance of hydrogels hinder their practical applications in challenging environments, such as subzero temperatures and arid conditions. Herein, we report on a shape-morphing system of tough organohydrogels enabled by the spatially encoded rigid structures and its applications in conformal packaging of “island–bridge” stretchable electronics. To validate this method, programmable shape morphing of Fe (III) ion-stiffened Ca-alginate/polyacrylamide (PAAm) tough organohydrogels down to −50 °C, with long-term preservation of their 3D shapes at arid or even vacuum conditions, was successfully demonstrated, respectively. To further illustrate the potency of this approach, the as-made organohydrogels were employed as a material for the conformal packaging of non-stretchable rigid electronic components and highly stretchable liquid metal (galinstan) conductors, forming a so-called “island–bridge” stretchable circuit. The conformal packaging well addresses the mechanical mismatch between components with different elastic moduli. As such, the as-made stretchable shape-morphing device exhibits a remarkably high mechanical durability that can withstand strains as high as 1000% and possesses long-term stability required for applications under challenging conditions.Keywords:organohydrogels;anti-freezing;shape-morphing;tough hydrogels;flexible electronics

Conductive gels are highly desirable for wearable electronics and sensors. Photocurable 3D printing technology provides an efficient way for the preparation of gel-based microstructured electrodes. However, how to obtain gels with both high stretchability and 3D printability, is still one of the current challenges to customize wearable sensors through 3D printing. Herein, we constructed a photocurable composite mainly composed of N -methylol acrylamide (NAM) and ethylene glycol (EG) for the successful 3D printing of gel-based wearable sensing devices. After printing, abundant hydrogen bonds formed among the hydroxyl groups on the side chains works synergistically with the covalent bonds, enabling the gel to reach excellent mechanical properties and the elongation at break reach 730%. The as-printed gel incorporated with sodium chloride has excellent resistance signal detection ability, which can accurately and stably detect human motion. In addition, the EG endows the printed gels with excellent anti-freezing and anti-drying properties, enabling the wearable sensors to be used in harsh environments. In summary, this work introduced a facile strategy for the rapid preparation of gel-based flexible sensors with microstructure by photocurable 3D printing, which provides the possibilities for the manufacturing of artificial intelligence and smart electronics.
