Aerosol-based transmission contributes to infection by various pathogens. Consequently, it is urgent to design antimicrobial personal protective equipment (PPE) and address the potential biological contamination of discarded PPE. We report a novel ZIF-67-modified PP fabric for photothermal disinfection; our work provides a fast, one-step, and low-cost preparation approach for incorporating zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) nanoparticles (NPs) onto polypropylene (PP) fabric. First, we prepared ZIF-67-water NPs and ZIF-67-methanol NPs using relevant solvents and characterized them by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. We then used only ultrasonication to prepare ZIF-67-modified fabrics by incorporating ZIF-67 NPs onto PP fabric with a 0.5-1.5 mg/cm 2 loading rate (18.5-40.5 wt%). The ZIF-67-modified fabrics were subjected to the same characterization, and then they were evaluated for photothermal performance, hydrophobicity and antimicrobial ability. The fabric of ZIF-67-water@PP-1.5 was selected to repurpose an antimicrobial mask. We demonstrated that the ZIF-67-modified fabrics have excellent photothermal performance with near-infrared (NIR) radiation and exhibit increased hydrophobicity, which is determined by the loading rate of ZIF-67 NPs. The surface temperature reached and maintained peak levels (70 °C and 90 °C) with NIR radiation, whilst the highest contact angle was over 140°. The photothermal behaviour could kill over 99.9% of gram-negative and gram-positive drug-resistant bacteria, whilst the haemolytic behaviour was less than 5%. The repurposed mask retained controllable photothermal properties. The application of these fabrics not only addresses the demand for affordable antimicrobial PPE but also contributes to reducing potential biochemical threats in discarded PPE.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is of great importance to protect people from respiratory pollutants such as fine dust and pathogenic microorganisms. Besides, the accumulated water vapor caused by breathing during long-term wearing PPE would bring discomfort to people. Herein, an antimicrobial polyurethane/polyacrylonitrile (PU/PAN) Janus membrane with unidirectional moisture management properties was fabricated using layer-by-layer electrospinning technology. As expected, unidirectional moisture transfer was achieved within 28 s, and the excellent filter efficiency of 99.20% against PM 1.0 and the bacteria retention capacity of 100% effectively purify the flowing air. In addition, the secondary infection can be avoided since the antimicrobial quaternary ammonium unit was chemically anchored to the Janus membrane. Therefore, the present PU/PAN Janus electrospun membrane as the part of PPE is supposed to improve the wearing comfort and meet the requirements of preventing contamination by bacteria, aerosols and other pollutants in air.

The current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has resulted in the widespread use of personal protective equipment, particularly face masks. However, the use of commercial disposable face masks puts great pressure on the environment. In this study, nano-copper ions assembled cotton fabric used in face masks to impart antibacterial activity has been discussed. To produce the nanocomposite, the cotton fabric was modified by sodium chloroacetate after its mercerization, and assembled with bactericidal nano-copper ions (about 10.61 mg·g −1 ) through electrostatic adsorption. It demonstrated excellent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli because the gaps between fibers in the cotton fabric allow the nano-copper ions to be fully released. Moreover, the antibacterial efficiency was maintained even after 50 washing cycles. Furthermore, the face mask constructed with this novel nanocomposite upper layer exhibited a high particle filtration efficiency (96.08% ± 0.91%) without compromising the air permeability (28.9 min·L −1 ). This green, economical, facile, and scalable process of depositing nano-copper ions onto modified cotton fibric has great potential to reduce disease transmission, resource consumption, and environmental impact of waste, while also expanding the range of protective fabrics.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a favored component in composites owing to their high porosity and synthetic tunability. However, loading MOF powders into a polymer matrix to form composites often relies on organic solvents and rigorous manufacturing processes. Here, we propose a biomimetic mineralized molecular engineering strategy, enabling robust, large-scale fabrication of MOF-fabric composites without organic solvents. This strategy allows MOF nodes to be embedded between highly elastic state polymer molecular chains, achieving strong physical anchoring. The preparation process realizes a significant reduction in carbon emissions (30%–50%) and high production efficiency (10 kg/h) while maintaining excellent fixation fastness, including resistance to washing (over 25 times), rubbing (over 100 times), and light (over 12 h). Furthermore, the applications of MOF-fabric composites in personal protective equipment are demonstrated, including organic gas adsorption, UV protection, and antibacterial. Our work provides a sustainable pathway towards the practical application of MOF-fabric composites.

Currently, multifunction has become an essential direction of personal protective equipment (PPE), but achieving the protective effect, flexibility, physiological comfort, and intelligent application of PPE simultaneously is still a challenge. Herein, inspired by the meso-structure of rhinoceros skin, a novel strategy is proposed by compounding an ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4) solution soaked gelatin hydrogel with the high weight fraction and vertically interwoven Kevlar fibers to manufacture a flexible and wearable composite with enhanced puncture resistance and strain-sensing properties. After (NH4)2SO4 solution immersion, the hydrogel’s tensile strength, toughness, and fracture strain were up to 3.77 MPa, 4.26 MJ/m3, and 305.19%, respectively, indicating superior mechanical properties. The Kevlar/hydrogel composites revealed excellent puncture resistance (quasi-static of 132.06 N and dynamic of 295.05 N), flexibility (138.13 mN/cm), and air and moisture permeability (17.83 mm/s and 2092.73 g m–2 day–1), demonstrating a favorable balance between the protective effect and wearing comfort even after 7 days of environmental exposure. Meanwhile, salt solution immersion endowed the composite with excellent strain-sensing properties at various bending angles (30–90°) and frequencies (0.25–1 Hz) and allowed it to monitor different human motions directly in real-time. The rhinoceros-skin-inspired Kevlar/hydrogel composites provide a simple and economical solution for antipuncture materials that combine high protective effects, a comfortable wearing experience, and good strain-sensing properties, promising multifunctional PPE in the future.

Emerging infectious diseases caused by the spread of bacteria and viruses are a major burden on global economic development and public health. At present, most personal protective equipment has weak antibacterial and anti-viral properties. The PAN/PTHP nanofibers reported in this article provide a new method for the development of personal protective equipment. In this study, a mixture of PTHP and PAN was prepared into PAN/PTHP nanofibers with high-efficiency and long-lasting antibacterial effects (>99.999%) through the electrospinning process. Live/dead staining and cell proliferation experiments showed that the preparation of PAN/PTHP nanofibers has good cell compatibility. In addition, PAN/PTHP nanofibers show obvious destructive effects on lentiviruses. Based on these characteristics, PAN/PTHP nanofibers were applied to facial masks, which can be used as the inflatable biocidal layer of facial masks and have an excellent interception effect on particles in the air. The successful synthesis of these fascinating materials may provide new insights for the development of new protective materials.

A multifunctional composite that can withstand puncture threats and endure extreme environmental conditions is pivotal for next-generation personal protective equipment (PPE). Herein, we report a flexible Kevlar-reinforced hydrogel composite that simultaneously exhibits outstanding puncture resistance, strain-sensing functionality, and anti-freezing performance. The PVA hydrogel matrix, structurally enhanced via immersion in Na 3 Cit and Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 dual-salt solution, demonstrates excellent mechanical robustness and strain-resistance responsiveness across both ambient and subzero environments. Integrated with Kevlar fabric, the flexible composite achieves a maximum quasi-static and dynamic puncture force of 69.55 N and 318.70 N, representing 4.07-fold and 3.09-fold improvements, respectively, over the neat fabric, and absorbs 94.58% of the impact energy from a drop hammer. Notably, the composite maintains superior puncture resistance (maximum quasi-static and dynamic puncture force of 55.97 N and 265.58 N) and flexibility (bending stiffness of 7.78 mN·cm) at -15 °C. Its strain-sensing capabilities remain sensitive and stable, offering excellent linearity, a broad detection range, and consistent performance over 500 cycles at both 25 °C and -15 °C, enabling real-time, reliable monitoring of human motion across diverse environmental conditions. This work offers a scalable and practical approach toward fabricating high-performance, all-weather flexible PPE for protective and wearable sensing applications in harsh environments.

Influenza virus with numerous subtypes and frequent variation limits the development of high-efficacy and broad-spectrum antiviral strategy. Here, a novel multi-antiviral metastable iron sulfides (mFeS) against various influenza A/B subtype viruses is developed. This work finds that mFeS induces high levels of lipid peroxidation and •OH free radicals in the conservative viral envelope, which depends on Fe 2+ . This phenomenon, termed as a viral ferroptosis, results in the loss of viral infectibility and pathogenicity in vitro and in vivo, respectively. Furthermore, the decoction of mFeS (Dc(mFeS)) inhibits cellular ferroptosis-dependent intracellular viral replication by correcting the virus-induced reprogrammed sulfur metabolism, a conserved cellular metabolism. Notably, personal protective equipment (PPE) that is loaded with mFeS provides good antiviral protection. Aerosol administration of mFeS combined with the decoction (mFeS&Dc) has a potential therapeutic effect against H1N1 lethal infection in mice. Collectively, mFeS represents an antiviral alternative with broad-spectrum activity against intracellular and extracellular influenza virus.

Thermophiles can survive in a high-temperature environment due to the synergy of hydrophobic interaction and electrostatic interaction in their proteins. Shear thickening fluid (STF) is a kind of concentrated suspension, which shows shear thickening (ST) behavior and can transform from a liquid state to a solid state under shearing. However, this special phenomenon relies on the hydrogen bonds between particles and dispersing medium. At elevated temperatures, the hydrogen bonds will break and the ST effect will become weaker or even disappear. Herein, inspired by the high-temperature resistance mechanism of thermophile proteins, a novel MOF-801 based STF with better ST effect at elevated temperatures is reported. Specifically, the hydrogen bonds that conventional STF relies on are replaced with hydrophobic interaction and electrostatic interaction, adopting a strategy of dispersing MOF-801 into a mixture containing poly(ethylene glycol), poly(acrylic acid), and Ca 2+ . When the temperature rises to 55 ℃, the storage modulus of M-STF rises from 13 Pa to 2036 Pa, and the suspension transforms to a solid-like state. Thus, a shapeable, self-healing, shear-stiffing, and conductive polymer-like substance can be obtained. In addition, a high-performance composite can be developed by impregnating M-STF into Kevlar, which shows promising applications in lightweight body protection.

The outbreak of infectious diseases such as COVID-19 causes an urgent need for abundant personal protective equipment (PPE) which leads to a huge shortage of raw materials. Additionally, the inappropriate disposal and sterilization of PPE may result in a high risk of cross-contamination. Therefore, the exploration of antimicrobial materials possessing both microbe interception and self-decontamination effects to develop reusable and easy-to-sterilize PPE is of great importance. Herein, an aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active luminogen-loaded nanofibrous membrane ( [email protected] ) sharing sunlight-triggered photodynamic/photothermal anti-pathogen functions are prepared using the electrospinning technique. Thanks to its porous nanostructure, [email protected] shows excellent interception effects toward ultrafine particles and pathogenic aerosols. Benefiting from the superior photophysical properties of the AIE-active dopants, [email protected] exhibits integrated properties of wide absorption in visible light range, efficient ROS generation, and moderate photothermal conversion performance. A series of antimicrobial evaluations reveal that [email protected] could effectively inactivate pathogenic aerosols containing bacteria (inhibition rate: >99%), fungi (~88%), and viruses (>99%) within only 10 min sunlight irradiation. This study represents a new strategy to construct reusable and easy-to-sterilize hybrid materials for potential bioprotective applications.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as face masks is vital in battling the COVID-19 crisis, but the dominant polypropylene-based PPE are lack of antiviral/antibacterial activities and environmental friendliness, and have hazardous impact on the soil and aquatic ecosystems. The work presented herein focused on developing biodegradable, antiviral, and antibacterial cellulose nonwovens (AVAB-CNWs) as a multi-functional bioprotective layer for better protection against coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and addressing environmental concerns raised by the piling of COVID-19 related wastes. Both guanidine-based polymer and neomycin sulfate (NEO) were reactive-modified and covalently grafted onto the surface of cellulose nonwovens, thereby conferring outstanding antiviral and antibacterial activities to the nonwovens without deteriorating the microstructure and biodegradability. Through adjusting the grafting amount of active components and selecting appropriate reagents for pretreatment, the antimicrobial activity and hydrophobicity for self-cleaning of the nonwovens can be tuned. More importantly, we demonstrated for the first time that such multi-functional nonwovens are capable of inactivating SARS-CoV-2 instantly, leading to high virucidal activity (> 99.35%), which is unachievable by conventional masks used nowadays. Meanwhile, the robust breathability and biodegradability of AVAB-CNWs were well maintained. The applications of the as-prepared nonwovens as high-performance textile can be readily extended to other areas in the fight against COVID-19.

Abstract Polypropylene (PP) nonwovens have been widely used in disposable protective masks and protective clothing, which are essential to protect healthcare workers from highly infectious diseases such as COVID-19. However, realizing the disinfection reusable function of PP nonwovens to reduce carbon emission or white waste pollution after extensive use has been still a great challenge. Herein, Durable Antimicrobial and Anti-fungal Post-disinfection polypropylene nonwovens were developed by co-grafting of Triclosan and Chitosan. The antibacterial performance test results showed that the as-prepared co-grafted polypropylene nonwoven has a > 99.9% of antimicrobial efficiency against E. coli , S. aureus as well as multi-drug-resistant P. aeruginosa , and the excellent anti-fungal performance against fungus ( C. albicans ) and mold ( A. niger ). Moreover, it retained excellent Antimicrobial and Anti-fungal Properties after disinfection 3 times with boiling water, 40 × diluted 84 disinfectant and 75% alcohol for 5 min. This work provided ideas for developing more effective pathogen protection and longer-lasting personal protective equipment to reduce the environmental impact of medical masks and personal protective equipment in terms of energy consumption, carbon emissions and waste generation. Graphical Abstract Polypropylene (PP) nonwovens have been widely used in disposable protective masks and protective clothing, which are essential to protect healthcare workers from highly infectious diseases such as COVID-19. The as-prepared PP-AA-CS-TCL nonwovens exhibited an antibacterial efficiency of > 99.9% against E. coli , S. aureus , and P. aeruginosa as well as the excellent anti-fungal properties against C. albicans and A. niger. And the antimicrobial and anti-fungal activities were maintained even after disinfection 3 times with boiling water, 40x diluted 84 disinfectant and 75% alcohol for 5 minutes each. This provides a new way of thinking about reusing disposable surgical products with polypropylene nonwoven and reducing environmental pollution.
