Underwater writable and heat-insulated paper with robust fluorine-free superhydrophobic coatings

Zhibin Jiao,Wencai Chu,Linpeng Liu,Zhengzhi Mu,Bo Li,Ze Wang,Zhiwei Liao,Yuchen Wang,Hao Xue,Shichao Niu,Saihua Jiang,Zhiwu Han,Luquan Ren

Since its invention invented in China, paper has been widely used in the world for quite a long time. However, some intrinsic defects servely hinder its application in some extreme conditions, such as underwater or in fire. Herein, a bio-inspired durable paper with robust fluorine-free coatings was fabricated via a two-step spray-deposition technique. It not only consisted of modified SiO2 microspheres and nanoparticles, but also contained an epoxy resin, endowing the paper with multifunctional properties. First, this bio-inspired functional paper showed excellent superhydrophobic and self-cleaning properties with a high static water contact angle (WCA) of 162.7 ± 0.5° and a low sliding angle (SA) of 5.7 ± 0.6°. Moreover, it possessed unusual repellent properties toward multiple aqueous-based liquids and heat-insulated properties. Second, this paper could be used for writing underwater and maintained satisfactory superhydrophobic performance for a long time with a WCA of 153.3 ± 1.8°. Besides, its high mechanical robustness was also experimentally confirmed in harsh working conditions, such as strong acid/alkali, boiling water, abrasion, bending, and folding. Compared with conventional paper, it is anticipated that this bio-inspired functional paper would be really competitive and demonstrate great potential in the field of underwater and fire-proof applications.

Facile preparation of water-proof paper with tunable surface properties for water/oil separation

Chongrui Zhang,Qiang Zhao

Paper sheets are economic and sustainable materials alleviating the world’s reliance on petroleum plastics, yet the facile preparation of water-proof paper combing high strength with tunable surface properties is difficult. This work exploited a self-crosslinkable polyelectrolyte (poly[1-cyanomethyl-3-vinylimidazolium], PCMVIm) to circumvent this problem. The PCMVIm solution was filled into paper sheets, dried, and treated by mild ammonia (NH 3 ) vapor at 25 °C. Paper sheets incorporated with 0.6 wt% PCMVIm were rendered water-proof (80 °C, 1 week) and acid-resistant (6 M HCl), exhibiting a wet strength that is 6 times higher than pristine paper without PCMVIm. In addition, the hydrophilicity and oleophilicity of NH 3 -treated paper were easily tuned by modulating the counter anions of PCMVIm. The modified paper sheets show high permeability, selectivity and stability in separating water/oil emulsions containing toluene, petroleum ether, hexane and chloroform, respectively. The facile method of NH 3 vapor treatment confers wet-resistance, high strength, and tunable surface properties to paper valorization, leading to sustainable paper sheets for efficient oil/water separation.

Highly water-resistant paper via infiltration with polymeric microspheres from nanocellulose-stabilized plant oil-derived monomer

Wei Gao,Tong Wu,Yaming Cheng,Jie Wang,Liang Yuan,Zhongkai Wang,Baoxia Wang

Sustainable strategies to improve the water resistance of cellulose paper are actively sought. In this work, polymeric microspheres (PMs), prepared through emulsion polymerization of cellulose nanofibers stabilized rubber seed oil-derived monomer , were investigated as coatings on corrugated medium paper (CMP). After infiltrating porous paper with PMs , the water-resistant corrugated papers (WRCP n ) with enhanced mechanical properties were obtained. When 30 wt% PMs were introduced, WRCP 30 turned out to be highly compacted with an increased water contact angle of 106.3° and a low water vapor transmission rate of 81 g/(m 2 d) at 23 °C. Meanwhile, the tensile strength of WRCP 30 increased to 22.2 MPa, a 4-fold increase from CMP. When tested in a well-hydrated state, 71% of its mechanical strength in the dry state was maintained. Even with a low content of 10 wt% PMs, WRCP 10 also exhibited stable tensile strength and water wettability during the cyclic soaking-drying process. Thus, the plant oil based sustainable emulsion polymers provide a convenient route for enhancing the overall performance of cellulose paper.

Preparation of double-effect water-proof and oil-proof paper based on carboxylated nanocellulose emulsified acrylate polymer

Wenlu Wang,Yi Jing

The materials utilized in paper packaging are derived from natural plant fibers , making them both environmentally friendly and biodegradable. However, traditional paper has been vulnerable to water and oil, which has limited its widespread use. In this research, a low-fluorine acrylate emulsion with a short carbon chain (CNF-C 6 FA) was created by employing carboxylated nanocellulose (TOCNF), dodecyl phenol ethoxylate , and sodium dodecyl sulfate as emulsifiers through semi-continuous seed emulsion polymerization . When combined with a specific amount of polyvinyl alcohol , this emulsion is applied to the paper surface to enhance the paper's hydrophobic and lipophobic properties. The findings revealed that paper coated with 5 g/m 2 of CNF-C 6 FA achieved an oil-proof grade of 10 and a Cobb value of 13 g/m 2 , signifying a significant enhancement. It was discovered that TOCNF, acting as an emulsifier, not only maintained emulsion stability through steric hindrance , three-dimensional network structures, or vacancy effects but also conferred exceptional waterproof and oil-repellent properties to the paper. This can be attributed to TOCNF reinforcing the fluorocarbon groups in a directional arrangement, resulting in a dense and smooth coating layer on the paper's surface. The utilization of TOCNF as an emulsifier to produce environmentally friendly, waterproof, and oil-proof paper presents a promising approach for its high-value application.
