This study mainly focused on enhancing oil-membrane electrostatic repulsion towards anti-oil-fouling via electrically conductive hydrophobic membrane in electricity-assisted membrane distillation (MD). Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were coated on commercial membranes to fabricate membrane cathode. For concentrated hexadecane-in-saline water emulsions, the modified membrane exhibited significantly less flux decline, < 5% in dealing with extreme high-concentration oil emulsion (2000 ppm) at cell potential of 3.0 V. The anti-oil-fouling robustness was further confirmed over a continuous three-cycle operation with in-situ DI rinse. The anti-fouling mechanism was systematically discussed regarding the hydrophilicity of the membrane interface , charge repulsion between the oil and membrane cathode as well as slippery property at the liquid-gas-solid triple-phase interface. A modeled fouling rate constant was negatively associated with the calculated capacitive surface charge of the membrane cathode. Thermodynamics analysis suggested enhanced foulant-membrane electrostatic repulsion leads to a significant energy barrier which favored anti-fouling performance. Interestingly, the sliding dynamics of oil droplet along the interface of membrane cathode was found, tuned by the herein weak cell potential, which could also contribute to the fouling mitigation. Our results insight that the electrically conductive membrane cathode could modulate the foulant-membrane interaction which plays an important role in mitigating fouling/wetting occurred at the triple-phase interface.

Membrane fouling caused by highly viscous oils severely hampers the long-term application of oil–water separation membranes. In situ aeration, achieved by applying a voltage to the membrane to produce bubbles, can effectively reduce the adhesion of oil contaminants. Herein, the parallel NiFe-layered double hydroxide arrays were successfully constructed on Ni foam using a hydrothermal method. Compared with NF@NFLDH having randomly aligned nanosheet arrays, NF@NFLDH-P can produce more numerous micro-size bubbles. A substantial number of the microbubbles spontaneously coalesced with oil droplets, and the synergy of buoyancy and kinetic energy significantly hindered oil fouling on the NF@NFLDH-P membrane. Specifically, this microbubble–mediated anti-oil-fouling strategy substantially reduced the flux attenuation and maintained a high flux recovery ratio during long-term crude oil–water separation, exhibiting a great operational life. This study suggests an innovative way to design future anti-fouling membranes with bubble-mediated capabilities.

Superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic coatings that effectively prevent viscous oil contamination have been of considerable interest for the great potential in oil spill remediation and oilfield wastewater treatment . In the present work, a protonated cross-linkable nanocomposite coating with robust underwater superoleophobicity and intensified hydration capability is proposed through the synthesis of active polymeric nanocomplex (PNC), cross-linking reaction between PNC and hydrophilic chitosan (CS), and final protonation to further improve water affinity. Benefiting from the hierarchical structure and strong hydration capability induced by electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bondings, the nanocomposite coating coated textile exhibits excellent superhydrophilicity (within 0.28 s with water contact angle reaching 0°), underwater superoleophobicity (underwater crude oil contact angle at 160°), and ultralow oil adhesion even to highly viscous silicone oil. Moreover, the nanocomposite coating presents a robust chemical resistance, mechanical tolerance, and storage stability. Simultaneously, the nanocomposite coating adapts well to various porous substrates (e.g., stainless steel mesh and Ni sponge) with great anti-oil-fouling and self-cleaning performances. Importantly, the coating coated textile is successfully applied in crude oil/water separation with excellent efficiency and repeatability. The findings conceivably stand out as a new methodology to fabricate superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic materials with outstanding anti-viscous oil-fouling property for practically treating oily wastewater.

Superhydrophilic surfaces with underwater superoleophobicity have attracted widely attention in various fields, especially in the frequent ocean oil-spill accidents and increasing industrial oil leakage environments. However, controlling the oil fouling properties on these superhydrophilic surfaces is challenging since the potential solutions to prevent oil fouling tend to interfere with optical transparency. To reconcile the conflict between anti-oil-fouling properties and transparency, a triple-defense designed strategy by integrating mussel-inspired polycation coating, colorless hydrogel, and mineralized amorphous inorganic materials is introduced to a surface guaranteed superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity, superior active anti-oil-fouling properties, and high transparency. Thanks to the triple-defense design strategy, a synergistic effect originating from the cooperation of third defense layer of polycation coating, second defense layer of hydrogel, and first defense layer of amorphous inorganic materials gives rise to the superior active anti-oil-fouling properties to this superhydrophilic surface, regardless of oils. Independent of the environment, the surface enables to be aggressively infused by water, thus active de-wetting of diverse oils from the surfaces upon water action. The colorless organic coating and amorphous inorganic materials gives rise to the high underwater transparency. This substrate-independent multifunctional coating can be decorated on diverse substrates, allowing it used in various fields, such as oily wastewater treatment , anti-fogging, and underwater optical devices.

A novel route to construct stable and durable anti-adhesion surfaces was explored via a combination of the excellent anti-adhesion performance of zwitterionic betaine macromolecules with the strong adhesion of DOPA or its derivatives to various substrates. The zwitterionic betaine macromolecules bearing a thiol group poly(DMAPMAPS-co-BAC) and a DOPA derivative DMA containing a catechol anchor group and a double bond were first designed and synthesized. The poly(DMAPMAPS-co-BAC)-grafted surfaces were then fabricated via the interfacial thiol–ene photoclick reaction between poly(DMAPMAPS-co-BAC) and DMA anchored onto substrate (i.e., Glass slides and flat PET sheets) surfaces. The chemical formation of each layer on the surfaces was confirmed by XPS and ATR-FTIR analyses. Their morphologies and wettability were characterized. The results indicate that, compared with the original surfaces, the modified surfaces possess an increased nanoscale roughness; the WCA and OCA values on the modified Glass/PET surfaces can reach 10°/12° and 156°/162°, respectively, showing their strong hydrophilicity and excellent underwater superoleophobicity. The anti-oil-fouling and antifogging properties were investigated and the anti-bacterial adhesion properties were evaluated by bacterial adhesion tests using E. coli and S. aureus as test bacteria, respectively. The results show that the modified surfaces possess obvious anti-oil-fouling and antifogging properties and a strong ability to resist bacterial adhesion with a long term stability. It suggests that such a facile yet universal strategy based on interfacial thiol–ene photoclick chemistry could offer an effective solution to the poor stability of anti-adhesion surfaces modified with ultralow-adherent zwitterionic betaine macromolecules, and could be applicable to a wide variety of substrates.

Inorganic coatings with high transparency and superhydrophilicity have attracted tremendous attention because of their potential applications in marine environment monitoring, and oily wastewater treatment. However, the transparency and superhydrophilicity are usually mutually exclusive. Herein, we present a new facile strategy for fabricating highly transparent and mechanically robust superhydrophilic inorganic coatings with outstanding anti-fogging ability and anti-oil-fouling performance for high-viscosity oils. In this strategy, amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) coatings are mineralized on the surface of polydopamine and polyethylenimine (PDA/PEI) membranes under the synergistic effect of magnesium ions, citric acid, and poly(acrylic acid) at room temperature, forming an organic-inorganic composite structure with a uniform texture on various substrates. Owing to the strong hydration capacity of ACP, these coatings are highly efficient at preventing surface fogging and avoiding underwater crude oil fouling. Meanwhile, the ACP coating without grain boundaries or pores can reduce light scattering, thus maintaining the high transparency of the substrate. Moreover, the organic-inorganic composite structure endows the coatings with robust mechanical properties. This PDA/PEI-ACP mineralized coating can be deposited on various substrates, showing potential applications in underwater optical lenses, oily wastewater treatment, microfluidic devices, and other areas.
