A superamphiphobic coating is usually prepared via a reduction reaction and then deposited onto the surface of the substrate. This technology is difficult to control and achieve high bond strength, which easily leads to powder shedding. To overcome this issue, electroplating technology is usually preferred for preparing adhesion coatings. However, the coating prepared using this method is usually suitable only for hard steel substrates, and not for soft substrates such as carbon brushes. Herein, we demonstrate an air spray technology for preparing anti-greasy and conductive superamphiphobic graphite-1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane–SiO2 (GPS) coatings suitable for both soft substrates (carbon brushes) and hard substrates (collector rings). The sheet resistance of the coating with 10% graphite content is 4.8 × 10−3 Ω □−1 for a 10 μm thin coating, corresponding to a resistivity of 4.8 μΩ cm. More importantly, the prepared coating has excellent liquid repellency, such as water, rapeseed oil and n-hexane. In addition, the coating has excellent anti-greasy and mechanical properties, which provide a brand-new solution for the greasy pollution in the engineering field. These advantages will enhance the application of superamphiphobic GPS coating in the fields of hydropower, wind power and transportation, and so on.

Paper derived from lignocellulose has great advantages over plastics as packaging material, nevertheless, the poor water- and oil-resistances of paper-derived products limited their application in high-end field. Herein, novel dimer acid-based waterborne polyurethanes (DWPUs) with different content of dimer acid-based polyester polyol (DG) were prepared and used as water- and oil-resistant coating for paper substrate. The effects of DG contents on water- and oil-resistances, mechanical properties and thermal stability of DWPUs coated papers were systematically investigated. When the content of DG reached up to 7 wt% (based on polyester glycol), the paper coated by DWPU exhibited 88.06% decrease in Cobb 60 value, 8.7 times increase in kit rating compared with uncoated paper. Meanwhile, DWPUs coated papers showed good mechanical properties and thermal stability. These improvements are attributed to the flexible long-alkyl chain, and six-ring structure of DWPUs as well as the continuous and homogeneous DWPU-derived membrane on the surface of paper. This study provides a new framework for the preparation of high quality, multifunctional, environmentally friendly water- and oil-resistant coatings for paper substrates.

This study mainly focused on enhancing oil-membrane electrostatic repulsion towards anti-oil-fouling via electrically conductive hydrophobic membrane in electricity-assisted membrane distillation (MD). Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were coated on commercial membranes to fabricate membrane cathode. For concentrated hexadecane-in-saline water emulsions, the modified membrane exhibited significantly less flux decline, < 5% in dealing with extreme high-concentration oil emulsion (2000 ppm) at cell potential of 3.0 V. The anti-oil-fouling robustness was further confirmed over a continuous three-cycle operation with in-situ DI rinse. The anti-fouling mechanism was systematically discussed regarding the hydrophilicity of the membrane interface , charge repulsion between the oil and membrane cathode as well as slippery property at the liquid-gas-solid triple-phase interface. A modeled fouling rate constant was negatively associated with the calculated capacitive surface charge of the membrane cathode. Thermodynamics analysis suggested enhanced foulant-membrane electrostatic repulsion leads to a significant energy barrier which favored anti-fouling performance. Interestingly, the sliding dynamics of oil droplet along the interface of membrane cathode was found, tuned by the herein weak cell potential, which could also contribute to the fouling mitigation. Our results insight that the electrically conductive membrane cathode could modulate the foulant-membrane interaction which plays an important role in mitigating fouling/wetting occurred at the triple-phase interface.

Membrane fouling caused by highly viscous oils severely hampers the long-term application of oil–water separation membranes. In situ aeration, achieved by applying a voltage to the membrane to produce bubbles, can effectively reduce the adhesion of oil contaminants. Herein, the parallel NiFe-layered double hydroxide arrays were successfully constructed on Ni foam using a hydrothermal method. Compared with NF@NFLDH having randomly aligned nanosheet arrays, NF@NFLDH-P can produce more numerous micro-size bubbles. A substantial number of the microbubbles spontaneously coalesced with oil droplets, and the synergy of buoyancy and kinetic energy significantly hindered oil fouling on the NF@NFLDH-P membrane. Specifically, this microbubble–mediated anti-oil-fouling strategy substantially reduced the flux attenuation and maintained a high flux recovery ratio during long-term crude oil–water separation, exhibiting a great operational life. This study suggests an innovative way to design future anti-fouling membranes with bubble-mediated capabilities.

Abstract Nanofibrillated cellulose is obtained from cellulose resources (e.g., Natural cellulose, bacterial cellulose) and is deemed to be environmentally friendly, green, and inexhaustible. Accordingly, we reported an innovative method for fluorine-free water- and oil/grease-repellent surface based on porous cellulose-based materials. In order to improve oil/grease resistance, sulfonated nanofibrillated cellulose (SNFC) was coated on the surface to fill the porous, the obtained paper was soaked in chitosan aqueous solution as the second layer. The-SNFC-chitosan-coated paper was applied with modified polyvinyl alcohol (MPVA) as the third layer to increase water resistance and water vapour transmittance. The experimental results showed 5.2 g/m 2 SNFC, 2.5 g/m 2 chitosan and 7% MPVA demonstrated excellent kit rating value of 12/12 (maximum grease resistance) (oil resistance contact angle is 103.93°), good water resistance (water contact angle is 108.6°) and high water vapour transmission rate (4.8 × 10 –14 g cm/cm 2 s Pa) under the condition of 90% relative humidity. This non-fluorinated and practical method is an excellent alternative to existing fluorinated materials, which will further promote the development of cellulose-based packaging. Graphic abstract

Due to the increasingly stringent environmental regulations and the great demand for sustainable materials, fluorine-free water- and oil-resistant coatings for paper have attracted considerable attention in the field of packaging and decoration. In this study, acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (AESO) and pentaerythritol tetrakis(mercaptoacetate) (PETMA) were used as reactants to form a crosslinked film on kraft paper through a UV-initiated thiol-ene click reaction, followed by the spraying of a mixed dispersion of silica (SiO 2 ) and AESO/PETMA solution, and a fluorine-free water- and oil-resistant composite coating on kraft paper was obtained. When the molar ratio of CC bonds of AESO to SH groups from PETMA was 1:1 and the content of SiO 2 was 20% of the mass of AESO, the water contact angle of the coated paper reached 141°, far higher than that of the uncoated paper at 56.5°. Meanwhile, compared with uncoated paper, the Cobb 60 value of the coated paper sharply decreased from 67.1 to 1.4 g m −2 , demonstrating excellent water resistance. In addition, the oil contact angle of the coated paper also attained 137°, and kit rating of 12/12. The coated paper also exhibited excellent barrier properties to hot castor oil.

As environmental awareness grows, developing non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and biodegradable water- and oil-resistant coating layers using bio-based materials for paper-based packaging has become a key field of research. In this work, sodium alginate (SA) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) were used as the oil-resistant coating layer, while shellac (LAC) and ethyl cellulose (EC) formed the water-resistant coating layer, to produce a water- and oil-resistant coated paper. The effect of the mass ratio of these materials on performance was analyzed, demonstrating that the interaction between SA and CMC enhances the compactness of coating, thereby improving oil resistance. Similarly, the addition of LAC to EC increases coating compactness, which improves water resistance. The resulting coated paper has excellent water resistance (Cobb value: 3.42 g/m 2 ) and oil resistance (Kit rating: 12/12) and shows no leakage after holding hot water and hot oil for 30 min, indicating good resistance to both. Additionally, the coated paper demonstrates good mechanical properties, thermal stability, biodegradability and recyclability. The materials used are widely available and low-cost, and the preparation method is straightforward, making this research highly valuable for advancing paper-based packaging materials.

The widespread use of plastics has caused serious environmental pollution, and the use of cellulose paper products to replace plastics has attracted worldwide attention. However, the rich hydroxyl groups and structure voids lead to poor barrier properties of cellulose paper products to water and oil. Herein, a rosin-based polymer coating (RB) is reported, which is prepared by cross-linking a rosin-modified silane coupling agent (RM) with hydroxyl-capped polydimethylsiloxane (OH-PDMS) and ethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The RB can form a dense and uniform barrier layer on the surface of the cellulose paper product, so that the RB-coated paper (RB paper) exhibits excellent properties, including (1) water resistance (exhibiting a water contact angle of 102.3°, the relative water absorption rate decreased by over 90% at both 25 and 90 °C, reaching 35.1% and 45.9%, respectively), (2) oil resistance (Kit test reaches no. 10, and the relative oil absorption rate decreased by over 90% at both 25 and 90 °C, reaching 4.1% and 6.4%, respectively), and (3) high mechanical properties (tensile strength increased from 23.2 to 40.6 MPa, stronger than partly commercial plastics). Moreover, RB paper exhibits biodegradability and recyclability. These impressive performances position RB paper as a viable alternative to plastic.

Paper-based packaging materials have attracted much attention due to their biodegradability, non-toxicity and renewability. However, traditional paper with poor water- and oil-repellency limits its application in food packaging. In this study, the traditional paper coated with cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and a mixture of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) & CNF microparticles (CNFmp) became a hydrophobic and oleophobic paper-based material. The layer of CNF coated on paper can fill the porous on surface to improve the barrier, and the hydrophilicity of this layer contributed to resistance to oil. The coatings of PDMS@CNFmp provided the paper with good hydrophobicity . The effects of CNF concentration, coated thickness, and the second layer of PDMS@CNFmp on thermal stability, mechanical properties, water- and oil-resistance, and air barrier of the paper were investigated. When the concentration of CNF suspension for coating reached 2 wt%, the CNF layer's thickness was 16 μm and the coatings' thickness was 18 μm, the paper exhibited excellent tensile strength (35.02 ± 2 MPa), high hydrophobicity (WCA of 141° ± 3.2°), oil-resistance (91.8° ± 1.9°, kit rating 12/12) and gas barrier (1.38 ± 0.2 mL/min). The present work has great potential for preparing high barrier, fluorine-free, and water- and oil-resistant materials in the food packaging field.

Molded pulp is considered an alternative to plastic packaging for its low cost, recyclability and non-pollution characteristics. However, the range of its applications has been limited by hydrophilicity and lipophilicity. Presented herein is a facile and straightforward method for the preparation biodegradable water- and oil-repellant for molded pulp. Sodium alginate-based oil repellent and PDMS-based water repellent were prepared by cross-linking and modification. The two were then mixed in various ratios to obtain compound water- and oil-repellent, which was applied to the molded pulp by dip-coating. The coated paper demonstrated excellent oil resistance (with a kit rating of 11/12) and outstanding water resistance (with a water contact angle of 121.9° and water absorption of 25.8%). This novel, eco-friendly, water- and oil-resistant molded pulp coating prepared from biodegradable and food-contactable materials is a potential candidate to replace petroleum-based coatings and has excellent possibilities to be manufactured on a large-scale intended for food and non-food contact applications. Keywords:water resistant;oil resistant;molded pulp coating;fluorine-free;sustainable packaging;barrier property

Using petroleum-based plastic materials poses many serious problems, including resource consumption and environmental pollution. Paper-based materials are good substitutes for plastic products because of their biodegradability, resource-richness, and recyclability. Paper’s poor water and oil resistance limits its wide application in food packaging. The use of water and oil repellents is an effective strategy to improve the barrier properties of paper. However, fluorine-containing oil repellents produce perfluorooctanoic acid/perfluorooctanesulfonyl compounds (PFOA/PFOS), which are hazardous to human beings and the environment, during the preparation and use of the repellents. Therefore, developing non-toxic, harmless, and biodegradable bio-based waterproof and oil-resistant coatings is the mainstream trend in the future. In this study, simple and environmentally friendly fluorine-free waterproof and oil-resistant coatings for food wrapping paper were developed by grafting oleyl alcohol onto chitosan using the ring-opening reaction of epichlorohydrin, and the reagents successfully adhered to the surface of the paper. The successful synthesis of waterproof and oil-resistant coatings was confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and infrared (IR) analyses. The chitosan-based coatings (CHI-g-xOA, x = 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1) with different oleyl alcohol contents were prepared by the facile method. The obtained coated paper CHI-g-xOA-p ( x = 1/4) has not only excellent oil resistance (Kit rating value of 11 ± 1.0/12), which meets the food-grade oil-proof requirement, but also has excellent water resistance (Cobb 60 value of 11.86 ± 1.60 g/m 2 ). Compared with the uncoated paper, the tensile strength and water vapor transmission rate of the coated paper were significantly improved.

Bis (1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluoro-octyl)methylenesuccinate (FOM)/ethyl acrylate (EA)/methyl methacrylate (MMA) copolymer (FOME) latexes, FOM/butyl acrylate (BA)/MMA copolymer (FOMB) latexes, and FOM/octyl acrylate (OA)/MMA copolymer (FOMO) latexes were synthesized by continuous emulsion polymerization. Solution polymerization was also carried out to prepare FOMB. The influences of fluorine content and curing conditions on the surface properties of polymer films were discussed. The water and oil repellency of cotton fabrics treated with the FOM copolymers was better than that of conventional poly(fluoroalkyl acrylate)s containing the same fluorinated chain. The polymer films or the treated fabrics were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, x-ray photoelectron spectrometry, and wide angle x-ray diffraction. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
