Innovative Solid Slippery Coating: Uniting Mechanical Durability, Optical Transparency, Anti-Icing, and Anti-Graffiti Traits

Jiayi Shen,Junfei Ou,Sheng Lei,Yating Hu,Fajun Wang,Xinzuo Fang,Changquan Li,Wen Li,Alidad Amirfazli

Slippery coatings, such as the slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS), have gained significant attention for their potential applications in anti-icing and anti-fouling. However, they lack durability when subjected to mechanical impact. In this study, we have developed a robust slippery coating by blending polyurethane acrylate (PUA) with methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) and perfluoropolyether (PFPE) in the solvent of butyl acetate. The resulting mixture is homogeneous and allows for uniform coating on various substrates using a drop coating process followed by drying at 160 °C for 3 h. The cured coating exhibits excellent water repellency (contact angle of ~108° and sliding angle of ~8°), high transparency (average visible transmittance of ~90%), exceptional adherence to the substrate (5B rating according to ASTMD 3359), and remarkable hardness (4H on the pencil hardness scale). Moreover, the coating is quite flexible and can be folded without affecting its wettability. The robustness of the coating is evident in its ability to maintain a sliding angle below 25° even when subjected to abrasion, water jetting, high temperature, and UV irradiation. Due to its excellent nonwetting properties, the coating can be employed in anti-icing, anti-graffiti, and anti-sticking applications. It effectively reduces ice adhesion on aluminum substrates from approximately 217 kPa to 12 kPa. Even after 20 cycles of icing and de-icing, there is only a slight increase in ice adhesion, stabilizing at 40 kPa. The coating can resist graffiti for up to 400 cycles of writing with an oily marker pen and erasing with a tissue. Additionally, the coating allows for easy removal of 3M tape thereon without leaving any residue. Keywords:solid slippery coating;durability;anti-freezing;anti-graffiti;anti-smudge

Liquid-like transparent and flexible coatings for anti-graffiti applications

Peng Gao,Yanling Wang,Han Wang,Jing Wang,Xuehu Men,Zhaozhu Zhang,Yao Lu

Transparent, durable and smooth coatings with anti-fouling properties are highly desirable for many applications e.g. windows and touch screens. However, most of smooth anti-fouling coatings are limited by complicated preparation and application conditions such as synthesis at high temperatures or curing under ultraviolet irradiation. In this paper, two kinds of siloxane were cross-linked to form a highly transparent anti-fouling coating, which can be rapidly applied on different substrates by a facile brushing process (~3 min for curing) at room temperature. This coating has excellent anti-graffiti properties for liquids with complex components such as water-based and oil-based inks, furthermore, it also exhibits good flexibility, anti-reflection and anti-corrosion properties. The durability test shows that the performance of the coating remains unchanged under various harsh environments. This work would provide a pathway for developing solid and smooth anti-fouling coating, which is expected to be quickly applied in practice due to its simple principle and rapid preparation.

Synthesis of epoxy-based silicone prepolymers with UV/moisture dual curability for applications in anti-graffiti coatings

Fuping Bian,Xiaoquan Li,Jihe Zhao,Xuefeng Gui,Jiwen Hu,Shi Li,Shudong Lin

Ultraviolet (UV) photocuring technology has gained importance in crosslinking of polymers, as it allows fast curing rate, low energy consumption and no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, the photopolymerization of very thick films and in shadow areas where the light penetration is inhibited (e. g. in filled, pigmented, dispersed samples) remains a huge challenge. As reported herein, a simple hydrosilylation reaction was employed to synthesize epoxy-based silicone prepolymers . Firstly, the structures of the synthesized epoxy-based silicone prepolymers were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR) spectroscopy techniques, thus confirming the successful synthesis of these prepolymers. The epoxy group of prepolymers could be crosslinked under UV irradiation , and its silicone methoxy group (-SiOCH 3 ) was condensed under moisture ambient, so as to acquire both thick coatings and pigmented coatings due to the dual-curing approach. Moreover, water droplets exhibit water contact angles between 103° and 108° on these coatings, and surface energies of the these coatings are from 25.27 to 22.67 mN/m. The transparency of these coatings is over 90%. They remain stable at temperatures reaching up to 332.2 to 344.8 °C, thus demonstrating that they have excellent heat resistance. The coatings exhibited good mechanical properties with a tensile strength >4.57 MPa. Finally, the coatings have good anti-smudge and anti-fingerprint properties, and the overall results show that these films have potential applications as anti-smudge coatings.

Bio-based self-stratifying waterborne coatings via silicone-induced phase separation for enhanced hardness and anti-graffiti performance

Yuchen Zhang,Gonghao Wang,Die Yang,Yongbo Ding,Yinxiu Zuo,Liang Shen

This study developed a green and bio-based waterborne coating system that self-stratifies via silicone-induced phase separation. The system is built on a rosin acid-modified epoxy ester/acrylate hybrid resin and includes a small amount of vinyl-terminated silicone oil to promote phase separation. Two resin formulations were prepared, namely a silicone oil-free epoxy ester/acrylate hybrid resin (designated as EAR20, rosin acid constitutes 20 % of the total carboxylic acid content of epoxy ester) and a counterpart containing 2.5 wt% vinyl-terminated silicone oil (designated as EAR80–2.5, rosin acid constitutes 80 % of the total carboxylic acid content of epoxy ester). Self-stratifying coatings were fabricated by blending these two resins, with optimal performance observed at a 2:1 (EAR20:EAR80–2.5) mass ratio. During curing, the silicone-containing resin phase preferentially migrated to the surface, forming a distinct silicone-rich upper layer in a one-step process. This stratified architecture yields a hard, hydrophobic surface while preserving robust adhesion and mechanical integrity in the bulk. Compared to the silicone-free coating (with pure EAR20), the self-stratifying coating exhibited a markedly higher surface hardness (pencil hardness increased from B to H) and significantly improved durability. Water resistance in an immersion test extended from 7 days to 12 days without failure, and abrasion resistance increased from 5 ± 1 to 41 ± 2 cycles. The static water contact angle also rose from 75 ± 2° to 89 ± 2°, indicating a more hydrophobic surface. Furthermore, the silicone-rich top layer imparted anti-graffiti functionality, enabling sprayed ink to be easily wiped off without residue. Overall, this silicone oil-induced stratification strategy synergistically enhances both mechanical robustness and surface properties, offering a promising and sustainable route for developing high-performance waterborne coatings.

Development of a Transparent Coating to Enhance Self-Cleaning Capability and Strength in Conventional Paper

Xiangdong Ye,Junwen Hou,Xuerui Yan,Xiaojun Wu

Paper is one of the most widely used materials, due to its application in books, packaging, and office supplies. However, conventional paper has many disadvantages, such as low tensile strength, poor resistance to water and oil contamination, lack of antigraffiti capability, and easily deformed by moisture. Therefore, we proposed a double-layer protective coating that consists of a polyurethane (PU) bottom layer, to enhance tensile strength, and a top polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite layer to enable antigraffiti and contamination-resistant capabilities. In the study, a double-layer coating was applied to conventional paper, using a simple two-step spraying method. The results showed that the prepared coating structure exhibited outstanding self-cleaning characteristics with respect to both water and oil contamination and adequately demonstrated antigraffiti capability. Moreover, the coating maintained superhydrophobic and oil-stain resistance after four months of outdoor storage. Finally, the tensile strength of the coated paper was 6.3 times as high as that of the original paper, making this coating structure a promising solution to the problems that limit paper from being more widely utilized in commercial and consumer application.

Preparation of water-borne non-fluorinated anti-smudge surfaces and their applications

Ximing Zhong,Meng Zhou,Sheng Wang,Heqing Fu

Existing approaches for the preparation of anti-smudge surfaces are prominently confined to the use of fluorinated materials and highly toxic organic solvents. Smooth water-borne non-fluorinated anti-smudge surfaces are highly desirable for their high safety, low cost and environmental friendliness, and they could also address the challenges plagued by the deficiencies in long-term stability, durability, and scalability existing in present coating systems. Herein, we, for the first time, develop a novel smooth non-fluorinated anti-smudge system by crosslinking the hydrophilic groups in two water-borne components. The resultant surfaces are highly transparent, and they show striking anti-smudge performance toward various liquids, including water, hexadecane, diiodomethane, decane, ethanol, etc. Besides, these surfaces demonstrate remarkable chemical shielding ability against acid solution and alkali solution and thus protect substrates against exposure to harsh chemical environments. Also, they exhibit self-healing ability against chemical and physical damages. Compared with commercial fluorinated amphiphobic surface and superhydrophobic surface, these non-fluorinated surfaces show incomparable advantages in anti-smudge performance, pump oil and crude oil droplets could slide off the surface without leaving any traces. Furthermore, these surfaces could be applied for anti-graffiti and anti-fingerprint purposes due to their outstanding anti-smudge performance toward water-borne and oil-borne paints, ink, and artificial fingerprint liquid. More strikingly, they could maintain anti-smudge performance even after being subjected to long-term UV irradiation and physical damages, such as impact and scratch, indicative of the remarkable weathering resistance and the outstanding mechanical durability of these coating surfaces. Therefore, excellent performances in addition to the cost-effective and environmentally-friendly features make these newly-developed smooth water-borne non-fluorinated anti-smudge surfaces promising for widespread applications.

Robust and Highly Transparent Photocurable Fluorinated Polyurethane Coating Prepared via Thiol-Click Reactions and What Essentially Influences Omniphobic Coating’s Anti-Graffiti Properties

Kang Fu,Yi Tian,Zongting Zhu,Guoxian Zhang,Junjian Xie,Qiuyu Zhang

Without a fragile micro/nanostructure, omniphobic coatings have a natural advantage over superomniphobic coatings in mechanical durability, especially when confronted with finger wipes and squeezes in practical use. Many reported omniphobic coatings with lower liquid sliding angles showed better ink trace resistance. However, according to our results, these two properties are not positively related. The respective critical factors for lowering the liquid sliding angle and resisting tiny contaminants, such as ink stroke and fingerprint, remain elusive. Through three steps of the thiol-click reaction, a surface-dried, highly transparent, mechanically and chemically robust, fluorinated polyurethane coating was photocured efficiently. Surfaces that exhibited better sliding performance but worse resistance to ink stroke and fingerprint were reported. Our results indicate that a heavy cross-linked structure was beneficial for the resistance to tiny contaminants, while the liquid sliding performance only depended on the surface fluorine content, especially the surface enrichment of flexible low-surface-tension chains. Interestingly, an unexpected transformation from a turbid dispersion to a transparent solution during the preparation was observed. The efficient thiol-click reaction induces a micelle-like structure to open and imparts high transparency to the final coatings. Therefore, this work provides useful information to facilitate the study of omniphobic coatings, as well as a good candidate in anti-graffiti applications.
