As we all know, in the field of safety protection, it is crucial to develop protective materials with fire-retardant and vibration-damping properties. However, it is a challenging task to integrate different properties into a single polymer. To meet this challenge, we successfully developed a functionalized nano flame retardant (UiO-66-NH 2 @DOPO) by modifying UiO-66-NH 2 with 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO). This flame retardant was then incorporated into a porous polyurethane foam (MPUF) synthesized from a bio-based polyol, resulting in a bio-based MPUF composite with excellent vibration-damping, fire-retardant, smoke-suppressing, and anti-dripping properties. Due to the intumescent fire-retardant system formed by UiO-66-NH 2 and DOPO, when the additional amount of UiO-66-NH 2 @DOPO reached 25 %, the LOI value of the MPUF composite material was increased to 31.2 %, and the total smoke production (TSP) was reduced by 80.64 %. In addition, it obtained a V-0 rating in the UL94 test and exhibited excellent anti-dripping properties. In addition, owing to the reinforcement effect and stress dissipation of UiO-66-NH 2 @DOPO, the MPUF composites exhibited excellent energy dissipation and vibration-damping properties (maximum loss factor of 1.32 at 1.0 Hz). This new bio-based MPUF composite material has broad application prospects. It can become an innovative self-supporting vibration-damping and protective material in sports, transportation, and aerospace.

Polypropylene (PP) is now widely used in various parts of automotive manufacturing, but pure polypropylene cannot meet the performance requirements and safe use requirements. The aim of this work is to design a flame-retardant system of halogen-free flame retardant for polypropylene that meets the requirements of flame retardant safety. The flame-retardant system with Piperazine pyrophosphate (PAPP), Melamine polyphosphate (MPP) and Ce based metallo-organic compound (Ce-CP) was selected by controlling different content ratios, and its flame retardancy and mechanical properties were studied. The results show that Ce-CP, as an anti-dripping agent, can be applied at a low addition for suppressing the melt dripping of PP. When the mass fractions of PAPP, MPP, and Ce-CP are 14.6%, 4.9%, and 2.5%, respectively, the limiting oxygen index of PP can be increased to 27%, and the vertical combustion grade UL-94 can reach V-0 level.

A bio-based intumescent flame retardant (IFR) was designed and synthesized by employing a simple and environment-friendly strategy. Via electrostatic interaction, chitosan (CS) and amino trimethylphosphonic acid (ATMP) as organic shells are deposited on the inorganic core of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to form the core–shell flame retardant (APP@CS@ATMP). Then, agar (AG) is used as a charring agent candidate that combines with APP@CS@ATMP to fabricate a bio-based IFR. The application of APP@CS@ATMP and AG in polylactic acid (PLA) is effective in improving its flame retardancy and anti-dripping properties. The PLA composite including 20 wt% APP@CS@ATMP/AG (APP@CS@ATMP:AG = 3:1) can achieve the optimal flame-retardant effect and a UL-94 V-0 rating with a slight melt-dripping phenomenon. Furthermore, the peak heat release rate and total heat release significantly decrease in the cone calorimetric tests contrasted with those of pure PLA. The flame-retardant mechanism of APP@CS@ATMP/AG is revealed by analyzing the pyrolysis gaseous products during the thermal decomposition and the morphology and structure of char residues. This work provides a facile and sustainable route to construct bio-based polymer composites with excellent fire-safety properties.

Polyester/cotton blend fabrics are widely used in clothing and household textiles which combine the comfort of cotton and excellent mechanical strength of polyester. However, their high flammability due to the special “wick effect” resulting from the different thermal decomposition process of cotton and polyester causes greatly potential fire hazards. In this study, fully bio-based intumescent flame retardant (IFR) coating of chitosan/phytic acid (CS/PA) was layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly constructed on polyester/cotton blend fabrics. The LOI value of polyester/cotton blend fabric which was LBL assembly coated by 20 bilayers CS/PA reached 29.2%. And the dripping of coated fabric was eliminated. The results of cone calorimetry test confirmed CS/PA coating greatly improved the flame retardancy of polyester/cotton blend fabrics. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results showed CS/PA coating changed the thermal decomposition process to promote the char formation of polyester/cotton blend fabrics. CS/PA coating on fabric could form the IFR system which acts through both condensed phase action by the catalysis dehydration reaction to forming stable char and gas phase action by the blowing effect. This research provides a new strategy to eco-friendly flame retardant and dripping-resistant for polyester/cotton blend fabrics by bio-based IFR system through facile LBL assembly method.

High efficient flame retardant surface treatment through a simple and universal strategy has attracted considerable interest. In this work, polyphosphonamide (PPA) was synthesized via an eco-friendly amine ester exchange reaction, and then the polydopamine-polyphosphonamide (PDA-PPA) coating was constructed by a mussel-inspired phenol-amine co-deposition on the surface of various substrates (cotton, polyethylene terephthalate , poly (lactic acid), polyamide , polypropylene fabrics, and flexible polyurethane foam). It was demonstrated that the PDA-PPA coating significantly improved the flame retardancy of the six substrates. For example, in the case of PDA-PPA coated cotton fabric sample, the limiting oxygen index was increased to 28.3%, the peak of heat release rate and total heat release was decreased by 70.6% and 48.2%, respectively. Especially in the vertical and horizontal burning tests, all PDA-PPA coated samples were self-extinguished and free of molten droplets. It was suggested that the PDA-PPA coating released P-containing radicals to capture active small free radicals and released non-combustible gases to dilute combustible volatiles in the gas phase. In addition, the coating showed excellent intumescent charring ability and promoted the char formation of all substates except polypropylene. Surprisingly, the coating also improved the breaking strength of the PDA-PPA coated fabric and the compressive stress of the PDA-PPA coated foam samples. It was believed that this work provides a scalable and promising strategy for preparing fire safety polymeric materials with a large specific surface area.
